The B class looks really nice. Some like to claim that under an E class isn't a Benz, or Under a C63, but no the company makes all of these cars. They are all a Benz.

I have over the years bought new Mercedes cars (E class conv. then a M Class and in 2018 a GLC) looking to replace the GLC with a new like for like. In 2018 I paid £37 500 discounted from £44 000. I was shocked to find that my configuration a few months ago for a similar spec car was around £70 000! I don`t consider myself poor but it is now unaffordable for me. Discussions with friends and relatives reveal the same thing, that to replace cars like for like has become unaffordable for them as well and they are struggling to find a vehicle they are happy with. It means for myself I have ordered a new car from a cheaper Manufacturer (Nissan) and my friends are considering to do similar. Its either move to another manufacturer or go down the range to a less well specified car (which goes against the grain!). I think Mercedes and others are pricing themselves out of the market for many.

Great video Nick I’ve been waiting for a B Class review. My A Class AMG Line is brilliant but a bit low where I live (speed bumps etc) I scrape the underside quite often. I’ll get a test drive at Brooklands

Can't understand why MB are getting rid of PHEVs. We have a 2020 B-Class after almost buying an A-Class but changed because of the boot space. So much more room and the PHEV gives us more than 35 miles in Electric.

The previous model to this was/is excellent - same as that in the A Class. Previous model is not much different to this one. Only big difference is wireless CarPlay but then with MBUX you don't need CarPlay

Thanks Nick - another excellent review.
Though the new model is not much different to the model it replaces.
Loses the track pad (which I use daily - especially due to Spotify)
Loses a nice steering wheel - the previous AMG Line wheel looks so much better
Still has that annoying brushed aluminium panel on the passenger side - it is blinding when the sun hits it.
    Same seats.
Not sure wireless CarPlay is a selling point as the MBUX is superior to CarPlay. I've used carplay only a few times and thats because my phone needed charging. Though seeing your recent A Class MBUX review video I feel this new version is actually a step backwards as it is less configurable.
The 1.3L petrol which is built by Renault is a bit rough sounding but is actually a good motor and the gearbox is excellent.
I'm very happy with my 2020 build car - no reason here to upgrade. Would be great to not have run flat tyres - they're so harsh. And I hope Mercedes fixed the annoying rattle in the front seat belt tensioners - a rattle noise right beside your ear on rough roads.

Great review and what a great looking car! One thing I really miss about the new model is the airplane style tray that my 4yo daughter absolutely uses a lot! I have a 2015 B250 4matic and a 2017 E220d in Australia and I actually don’t miss anything from the E class when I drive the B class (except the crazy fuel efficiency of the E class diesel)… it literally has everything to drive as comfortably!
Such an underrated car to be honest… it’s as spacious as some small/medium size SUV and much easier to load stuff in the boot as it is lower. My wife changed her mind when she had to lift a 20Kg suit case on to a friend’s X5 (she’s 1.52cm/47Kg btw). Unfortunately in Australia just because it’s not an SUV or as cool as the A class people tend to underestimate this car a lot.. Only having one model offered in Australia, B180 (I wanted a diesel) and no tray in the rear seat was kind of a deal breaker not to upgrade…

Yes I do seem to recall a B-Class somewhen has rear trays (think they had a cup holder too!)

Unfortunately from 2024 Mercedes has discontinued the sale of the B class in Australia…😢
They “replaced” it with the GLB. GLB facelift is much nicer than pre-facelift so maybe down the track I might consider.. but again no diesel! 😓

Mercedes-Benz have announced no more B-class for Australian market. The A-class is selling 10 times the number of B-class. That translates to less than 300 cars a year and not a viable market.

Have a 2022 amg b class , really like it , so much better than previous versions. One thing that drives me nuts though is the reverse auto braking when I have to reverse out of my drive onto a main road. If you don’t crawl along at 1cm/h if there’s anything coming along the road it slams on the brakes big time , talking about 2metres from the road traffic.

Great video nick. I have a question - between this B class, the A class saloon and the GLA, what would you recommend and why? It’s for a small family, one adult (1.7 meters) and a 11 year old kid. 90% city drive, but need a reasonable sized boot.

Thank you! I’ve got videos of both of the others two if you want to check them out on my channel.
For practically wise, GLA’s are always good as they’re similar to B-Class’s. A-Class Saloon is nice but of course has a smaller opening at the rear and less headroom.

@@npoleary thank you nick. I have zeroed in on the B class and the GLA. They are both almost same price Gla Is slightly more expensive, and similar specs. What will tilt my decision is
      1) which car has more interior space and can fit five people
      2) which car has more boot space
      3) which car is more fun to drive.
      Thanks

    • @npoleary

My problem is exactly, that It is in fact not easy to compare, if I for example need a long, but not necessarily high cargo space. If I compared only by cubic area, a short tall car would be more spacious than a longer, more practical, and lower estate car for example. Opel/ Vauxhall used to publish the real measurements in their brochures, with width, length etc. Even when the manufacturers don't, I always hope the reviewers does it.

Don’t worry I’ve heard this many times before but rest assured the entry level engines in the compact car range are not just "Renault engines", Mercedes and Renault have combined their efforts together to produce a very highly economical, low emission and powerful engine.
It’s common for some manufacturers to share designs with each other. Others include Mini Peugeot sharing their engines, Volvo and Noble, Mercedes S-Class & Pagani Zonda and many others too.
For the engine you’re talking about, Mercedes also put their own tech and spin into it and designed Formula One technology such as Nanoslide and even cylinder shut-off called CAMTRONIC allowing the cylinders to go down to 2! None of this is found in the Renault’s engines so no, they are definitely not the same at all. Even the new variants feature mild hybrid technology which also is not found on Renault models.
      Hope that answers your question!
