Poundland Pifco Penny-Pinching LED lamp. (Hack and schematic.)

  • My all time favourite hackable lamp is back under a different brand. But there's a catch.... They've skimped on the LED count on the three watt one. Here's how to convert these lamps into ultra low power 24/7 ambient lights.
    I almost got Electroboom's catchphrase right. It's FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER-ER-ER-ER-er-er!
    • Making a Full Bridge R...
    The little rectifier is rated at 0.8A and would get pretty hot if you ran it near that.
    Yeah, I did mostly completely miss the resistors with the solder when I was trying to fumble inside the lamp housing. The dissipation of the resistors will be a miniscule 50mW each for the 10 LED lamp and a slightly higher 100mW each for the 5 LED lamp. That's a fraction of their power rating. I wonder what component would fail first if left on continuously for decades.
    The Pifco lamps are available from Poundland in 3W and 5W ratings (get the 5W for mods) and in e27 screw base and B22 bayonet cap base. There may be a colour option, but I just saw warm white.
    If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

    This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

    Clive could you do a video talking more about apparent power factor / power factor and the implications of new smart meters? I've been holding off from having one installed, and want to know what knew charging schemes they might enable negatives / positives etc. And how much there in the interest of consumers v providers.

    • @23RaySan
      @23RaySan 5 лет назад

      for a standard home installation you get billed for active power in most countries. You are billed for KWh, not for KVAh. A smart meter probably doesnt change anything on that

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 5 лет назад +3

      As consumers it allows you to see what you are using. We rely on ours to tell when our oven reaches temperature.
      For providers it avoids needing to send someone to read the meter and let's them see what actual load you are putting on the grid (apparent power) vs what you are actually using. Also gives them a clear picture of exactly who us using what and where which could potentially help target where to put micro generation sites.
      Its unclear if they will ever switch to billing by apparent power but it means they could which is the worry.

    • @23RaySan
      @23RaySan 5 лет назад

      @@alexatkin i would understand it somehow if the electricity companies would billing their customers for apparent power. sure, you get nothing out of it, but on the other hand, the electricity company has to burn something to "compensate" for the phase offset. if you power, say for example an oldschool lightbulb, with an efficiency with say 10%, you have also to pay for the whole power consumtion of the bulb, not just for the light you get out of it. simmilar principle applys to apparant power...just saying
      luckily out appliances are getting better and better and modern SMPS come with real good PFCs

    • @Mark1024MAK
      @Mark1024MAK 5 лет назад +7

      beingatliberty - the so called advantages of so called “smart” meters are oversold. Yes, you can monitor your electricity consumption. But after a couple of weeks, most people will get bored of this. And if you already switch off devices and appliances, it will *NOT* save you any money whatsoever. It also won’t save you any money if you are too lazy to switch off devices and appliances.
      The first generation of “smart” meters often will no longer work as smart meters if you change your electricity supply company (at least in the mainland U.K.). The second generation smart meters are supposed to be better in this regard, but it’s too early to tell.
      The cheapest electricity deals are often from electricity supply companies that don’t require smart meters.
      Smart meters are not free, the money for the smart meter programme comes from charging bill payers more.
      How good is the data security? With smart meters transmitting consumption data, at some point enterprising criminals are going to figure out that you can tell if no one is at home using smart meter data...
      The national grid already has a very good understanding of the mainland U.K. power requirements, so I’m not sure smart meter data is going to make any significant difference in this regard.
      I strongly recommend instead of wasting time on a smart meter, instead look at turning off unnecessary electrical devices and appliances. And when you need to buy replacements, look at the efficiency figures. Also cheap items may not last as long as better quality items. So also take into account lifespan and quality.

    Pifco (described as "UK housewares and personal care", I suppose the latter is the vibrator department) was bought by an American company, Salton Inc. in 2001. Salton changed their name to Russell Hobbs Inc (they acquired that British brand at the same time they bought Pifco) in 2009, and were bought by Spectrum Brands (which was originally Rayovac) in 2010.
    So it hasn't really been a British company in nearly twenty years... (though it appears to still be registered in the UK.)

    I'm a sucker for *really bright* E27 LEDs. In 2015 I bought an Osram 17W bulb which supposedly had around 1500lm (or even more, I don't remember). But now it has failed me, after the warranty has run out and after an estimated run time of 15.000h, so about what they predicted. Still, this isn't very satisfying, because an LED wouldn't need to fail. In this case, it is the power supply that failed (at least I suppose so), since the LED starts flickering as a whole. However, it is so badly glued shut that there is no hope of opening it in a nondestructive way in order to repair it or replace the shoddy component. But the worst thing about it is that I haven't even learned from that experience, and I bought another Osram bulb, because they are the brightest with their 21.5W and around 2400lm.
    While my Phillips LED from 2011 (back then it was an 11W high power LED with around 800lm, ridiculous for today's standards, but it made good light) still works no problem. Oh well, I've also bought some new 18.5W Phillips LEDs with 2100lm. If they happen to last longer than the Osram does, then it'll be Phillips all the way from that point on.
    If the postage to the isle of man weren't as expensive as it is, I'd send the dead or dying Osram LED to you for a post mortem, Clive. But since it is a one way street anyways (as in: once you're in, you'll never get it back together), I'm not even sure it would be worth it.

    Seems they done a lot of taking over, buying brands, they became part of Russell Hobs of electric kettle fame, in 2001 Salton bought them, and in 2010 they were bought again by another conglomerate & the Russell Hobbs business in the UK was reorganised to become Spectrum Brands (UK) Ltd. Spectrum Brands in the UK now design and manufacture consumer products in addition to Russell Hobbs, including the brands Remington, IAMS, Eukanuba, Tetra, FURminator, Rayovac and VARTA.
    Further PIFCO info i found here modernmooch.com/category/pifco/ if you like to trip down memory lane as I do...

    When will you finally get a safety transformer with 1:1 transformation for your high voltage experiments? :D
    Then you won't get a shock when you accidently touch anything (unless you close the circuit anyway)

      An isolation transformer carries its own risks. In this environment I'm protected by good isolation from ground and two RCDs/GFIs.

    shame the UK has no Action stores (they are original from Netherlands but also in Germany etc. these days) as they now have a great selection of wifi-controllable lamps of a brand called LSC. Also detectors and switches e.d. I bought a 470 LM warm white WIFI LED lamp for 6.50 Euros and I discovered by its mac-address that it includes an Espressif chip (Esp8266 or 32). Would be awesome for you to tear one down Clive.

    Clive you can buy PIFCO B22 and E27 Lamps from Home and Bargin for £2.99 pack of 4. There rated at 5 Watt 425 Lumen and the Colour temp is 6000K. I measured the current at 30mA

    • @bdf2718
      @bdf2718 5 лет назад

      Colour temp may be OK, but the cheap LED lamps have a shitty spectrum. None of them are going to match the full spectrum of an incandescent lamp, but the cheap ones have one red peak, one green peak and one blue peak. Colours will look wrong. Even wronger than with a more expensive LED lamp. Which still makes colours look wrong compared to an incandescent.

    Most interesting, pity I'm in the wrong country, no pound land over here. It would be really handy if it was easy to tell whether a lamp is a capacitive dropper type, of a full on switch mode supply before buying them. I kind of prefer the cap droppers as they are so much more simpler = longer life.
    I almost burst my sides laughing when you mentioned 'randomly probing' mains circuitry - if I did it, smoke would surely ensue, Only Big Clive gets away with this.

    I dunno who'd buy a 3W vs a 5W anyway. LED light bulbs aren't bright enough! They're not as bright as they claim to be! The commonly sold ones don't compare well to incandescents, and it's the brighter ones are hardly ever found in supermarkets etc. Even 5W isn't good enough for a living room, or most other rooms. As a porch light, maybe, fine, and using hardly any power is a good thing there. It was the same with compact fluorescents, you'd see 8W everywhere when really 11W was the minimum acceptable and really 15W would have been good.

    Clive, about charging for apparent power: To my knowledge, no company or anyone else is charged per kVAh "used" as you suggest.
    Normally industry still pay per kWh, but they have to pay a penalty if their PF falls below a certain value, for example 0.9.
    If the power Companies actually tried to charge you for kVAh, you could almost certainly sue them for misleading people or false claims or all sorts of stuff. After all they only have to produce that much more Power as is dissipated on the lines. They do *_not_* have to produce the same amount of KWh as the amount of kVAh.

    • @dreddwailing6395
      @dreddwailing6395 5 лет назад

      If they do charge for reactive power you should buy some bad PF lamps to counteract inductive loads like fridge motors

      @@dreddwailing6395 This only really works if it's matched to the inductive load and only comes on when the motor does, otherwise it's just like those "miracle power saver" boxes Clive tore down a while ago

    Clive, at work our offices and some of our labs use a redundant power system called something like electrax (not sure on the spelling). You push the plug in and twist and isn't like any sort of plug I've seen before. Was wondering if you could do a video doing a bit of an explanation of how it works, the idea behind it etc. Cheers!

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  5 лет назад

      If the plugs are shaped like keys it uses a set of bus bars that run the full length of the strip. The plugs have contacts that engage with the bus bars when rotated.
