This band exists official since 1994 and they have the same line up ever since. Their names are:
Till Lindemann (vocalist, lyricist and licensed pyrotecnition, that is why they can do what they do at life performances. There is an old interview with him from 1998 were he explains a little bit of it: ruclips.net/video/uUkjov1tbAY/видео.html He als has his side projects called "Lindemann" with Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy and Pain and in his youth he was a swimmer and almost at the Olympic Games in 1980, but due to an injury he had to give it up. Since 4th of January 2023 he is 60. Richard Z. Then there is Paul Landers the rhythm guitarist who was already in the GDR-Band "Feeling B" with Christian "Flake" Lorenz (synthesiser) and Christoph "Doom" Schneider (drummer). Flake also wrote two books so far.
And then there is Oliver Riedel the bassist of the band. All six are from the former GDR/behind the wall en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany (some younger once do not know about this time, for all outside Europe)

As your main focus is in depth analysis of lyrics, you will for sure have a lot of fun with Rammstein. Till´s (leadsinger, songwriter) lyrics, poetry an play on words is insane and is absolutely worth exploring.
They are known for their social criticism and not afraid to pick up controversial topics and events.
Although probably the best live band ever, their music videos are artistic masterpieces as well as they add a second and third layer of interpretation with their imagery and acting skills. Just make sure to never skip an outro.
The educated marine channel has some of their music videos with english subtitles, although I think that the newer ones have quite good captures on their own.

With 'mein Herz brennt' I'd recommend going for the official version first, in my opinion it makes the piano version even eerier.
Most of their newer music videos have (German) CC that allow RUclips auto translate, which is decent. Sometimes it's worth digging deeper with other translation services and multiple lyrics pages as some of the ambiguity gets lost.
@@JackNapierDe I am not quite sure about translation services. As you´ve said, a lot get´s lost (incl. references to politics, economy, scandals, Zeitgeist in the country of origin) or you have to research multiple sites. My go to would always be nativ speakers like the channel of "daveinitely".
It all depends how deep someone wants to dive in. Almost a necessity to dig deeper is with songs like "Radio", "Deutschhland" or "Wiener Blut". Especially "Deutschland".

'Engel' and 'Du Hast Mich' was first released in the album 'Sehnsucht' in 1997. I bought that CD then and every release of Rammstein since then. These are like old wine, just getting better.

Yes, those wings are as heavy as they look, 50kg or 110lbs for you non metric folk, the whistling is done through Flake's keyboards for the live shows..Till wore those wing well into his 50's and sadly not any more..this was in xmass 2010, first concert in the US since 9/11..both shows sold out in 20 mins..nice reaction, more Rammstein please

Hi 53 year old ARMY from New Zealand. I've been reintroducing myself to Rammstein recently. So I was super excited to see that you were going to look at them for the first time. Loved your reaction. Now that you've seen this, you have to see Du Hast live in Paris. It's literally compulsory. Till Lindemann is a phenomenal front man. There is no one else like him. His forerunners would have been David Bowie, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne. One of my favourite videos is Mein Herz Brennt (piano version) that features Till performing it for the camera. This is where you see a clear glimpse of his genius. This guy is 60 years old and still freaking killing it. As a band the closest thing I could possibly compare them to (with my limited knowledge) might be, is if Tool and Nightwish had a baby and it's godparents were Prince and Marilyn Manson lol. I also recommend the progressive rock band Polyphia - Playing for God and Ego death (featuring guitar legend Steve Vai)- these songs don't have lyrics, but the band will expand your range in music. And Tim Henson is a complete guitar god. I reckon you'd like them.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. The live performance are generally better, with a couple of exceptions IMO. The pyrotechnics are amazing live. 'Mein Teil' or 'Ich Tu Dir Weh' are other good live tracks to break down. The one official video I'd recommend which would suit your usual breakdown style would be 'Deutschland', covering a lot of German history. You could always have the English translation open in another window to run through. And keep an eye out for the treadmill under the keyboard. lol

The latter played all the Instruments for the Band until 2020. The Band officially existed since January 2015. Do not be afraid with rammstein to pull up a lyrical translation to look over as you follow along. The meaning behind the song is easily 55% of each song with stage performance adding another 20-30%

I HIGHLY recommend having the translated lyrics on hand for future Rammstein songs. Till (lead singer) is a very accomplished poet and a lot of their lyrics read like poetry even in English. Take this song, ‘Engel’ is German for ‘Angel’, here’s the lyrics:

Like almost all of Till’s lyrics, there’s a shit ton of subtext….Angels aren’t universally seen as the ‘angelic’ beings we most often imagine them as. There’s plenty of passages in the Bible about how terrifying some of them looked.
Which gives a lot of context to Till’s wings, claws and demeanor. The whole song he stays stone faced and stoic. Like a man who’s had to accept a terrible fate. He doesn’t want to be scared and alone, nor does he want to be seen as a monster.
But, it could also be taken as a flat out rejection of god or something else, that’s the thing with their lyrics…they’re open ended by design so there’s always multiple interpretations to be had!

For live performance it would be a toss up between ‘Du Hast’ and ‘Ich Tu Dir Weh’. Du Hast is far and away their biggest hit and they do some INSANE pyro during it, but Ich Tu Dir Weh really shows off Tills range and fuckin slaps. It also has some wild pyro in it. Either one would be a solid choice
Music video wise, it would be a toss up between ‘Deutschland’, ‘Zeit’, and the piano version of ‘Mein Herz Brennt’
Deutschland and Zeit are both straight up short films. They’re both gorgeously shot, brimming with symbolism, and very thought Provoking.
The piano version of Mein Herz Brennt is probably my favorite thing they’ve ever done but I feel like it‘s something that should be worked towards…it’s a beautiful, heartbreaking piece of art but I think it’s best to experience a couple other Rammstein songs first. Not their whole catalog, just enough to get a grip on what they’re really about first.

The gauntlet is holding the controls for the Wings, flames and explosives.
Rammstein is very very intense live and very exact with their equipment. The lead has a pyrotechnic license and they take security very serious. (Sure, if you are in the front, at one of their concerts you will feel the heat, so best be prepared for that) By now the Band travels with their own stage... and even back when they did Madison Square Garden, the equipment the Band brought with them needed 7 Boings for transport.
If I remember correctly, this was the encore, meaning they'd already played for round about 2 hours... those wings are heavy as fuck, welded metal things ... I am once again surprised that he still can sing with 50 kg of weight pulling at his back.
Imagine being on stage for two hours and then going okay bring out the iron wings

The area in front of the stage is called the Fire Zone and there are fans who refuse to go there. If their concerts were initially music with fire, it is now fire with music. They face the challenge of having to surpass themselves on every tour and are now including the whole sold-out stadium. They need a week to set up one of their stages:

This concert was the first in 10 years with no concerts in the US and sold out in minutes. On the previous tour, they were arrested during the show for simulating sodomy on stage. The singer and keyboardist were sentenced to probation and a fine for indecent exposure. In order not to violate the terms of their probation (and because the firefighters were annoying them) they stopped giving concerts.
Singer Til was once asked by a US reporter what the lyrics are about. He replied: All about love. What Til didn't say, it's the dark side of love: possession, desecration of corpses, cannibalism, ... There texts are not always easy to translate because they contain quotations or play with the meaning of words. Some things get lost in translation.
The videos of the studio versions are also worth watching, mostly without fire.

I believe Rammstein is the name of the city that they are from in Getmany . I am not sure, but I think so.
IT'S spelled a bit differently, but yes, Ramstein- Meisenbach is a village In Germany. Did you know the lead singer of Rammstein, he was caught once trying to escape East Berlin, before he actually succeeded & was interogated for 6 hours by the Red Guard ? He eventually escaped East Germany during the Cold War.

"Ich tu Dir weh" (Hurricane Festival / Rammstein Official) --> Great singing and insane stage action towards the end)
"Mein Teil" (Live Hurricane Festival 2013) --> Read the story behind the song (a real case of cannibalism!) first
„Willst Du das Bett in Flammen Sehn" (Paris Version) --> Pyro Fashion, power, everything that Rammstein stands for
"Benzin" (Madison Square Garden) --> Benzin = Gasoline --> burns well. And maybe also a man?

For me „Zeit“ and „Angst“ are real masterpieces regarding the videos, lyrics and songs. „Adieu“ is another masterpiece. For this video is very helpful to know Rammstein and also their videos. Or to read afterwards the comments of Rammstein fans. :-)
„Dicke Titten“ is really cool, Zick Zack is for my personal taste the weakest of the songs regarding the music. The video itself is crazy and hilarious.
For a lyric wise very interesting song, including a masterpiece video: "Angst" from their current album. And „Zeit“ as well.
"Adieu" is a fantastic song and the video is incredible as well, but it has so many references to their songs and videos that it is probably not the best song for a "Rammstein Newbie" ;-)
"Deutschalnd" is definitely a "must see“, as it has the highest production quality there is and it is showing the dark history of Germany from the year 9‘bc (Varus battle at Teutoburg forest) till modern times. There is so much going on / happening, there are hidden hints, … that even as a German (like I am) you cannot get everything in one, two ore three times watching it.
For something completely different but awesome as well: "Mein Herz brennt", but the acoustic version! Just a piano and tills voice. And tills facial expressions are so haunting and fit perfect o the lyrics.
"Ich tu Dir weh" (from Madison Square Garden) has an incredible live show, fantastic singing and lyrics that could get a label "parental advisory", as thy deal with SM. BUT, they there is a plot twist in the lyrics that is not that easy to get and which makes you look different on the "story".
