    HI, THIS IS, AS WE STATED MORE THAN ONCE, A FUN NON-INFORMATIVE, NON-EDUCATIONAL VIDEO. THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A "FUN" AND "EXPERIMENT" VIDEO TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE 30 MINUTES THESE WERE IN MY EARS. CHRISSY, A HEARING AID USER OF HER ENTIRE DEAF LIFE, SUGGESTED WE DO THIS. Thank you.
    LULZ, ignore the part where I wrote about the voiceover in the black graphic. I forgot to edit that out before rendering and… yeah. There was obviously no voiceover to begin with, my bad, lol.

      on an interesting note. when you heard yourself differently as you spoke with the aids on.. your voice that you usually speak with in videos, had a difference in speaking tonality. Quality wasn't the correct word so I fixed that. There is no "quality" in speaking. everyone is different

    Some years ago I walked by a young couple who seemed to be having a heated argument judging by their body language and angry facial expressions. They were deaf and used sign language, which I don't know at all. The girl kept interrupting the guy by trying to hold his wrists and slapping his hands down. This was the first and so far only time I have witnessed angry sign language. Perhaps, Rikki, you could share some insight into this aspect of deaf/hoh communication in a future video?

      Without my hearing aids in, you kinda have to yell at me, haha. The worst sound that I've always hated to hear through hearing aids, is babies and little kids crying and screaming. *shudder* I hated my HAs growing up, but now that I'm obviously older and really kinda need them more (I still don't wear them as often as I should), when I do wear them, sometimes I like them. Sometimes I like to turn them all the up and listen to the feedback and enjoy how loud everything sounds. It doesn't hurt, it's just nice and loud. XD

    Hey, I really enjoyed this video. I'm studying to be an audiologist, and I have a moderate to profound hearing loss. When I got my first pair of hearing aids at a much less severe hearing loss, I did have that magical moment when I could hear things I never heard before. Hearing aids definitely takes some getting used to so the first time they really suck. Even with me being a long time HA wearing, I still hate it when I get a new pair. It does take a lot of time for your brain to start processing these new sounds you hear. If you were to decide if you wanted hearing aids, definitely give it the month trial period that is government regulated. That is why they have those trial periods. It takes a long time to learn to hear. Also they are aids and not corrections.

My response to that is always, "Are you going to paying for them"? Usually shuts them up. Sure, hearing aids that are designed specifically for my hearing loss may help but I like to think I get by just fine without them and I don't ever plan on getting hearing aids. That said it would be kind of fun to try some out, but I am willing to bet my reaction would be fairly similar to yours.

I think the worse one are babies who get them (because we all know how "accurate" infant hearing screenings are *sarcasm*) and they scream and cry because they're uncomfortable and overwhelmed, and if the HAs are too loud, they can't say anything so they're stuck. -_- There is no reason, I think, for infants to have to have them at that age, at least until they can say if they're too loud or uncomfortable.

  • @Hoberz
    @Hoberz 6 лет назад +4

    A few things that I should point out that everyone can understand:
    1) If you wear someone else's ear-mold that isn't a perfect fit in your ear, you definitely will hear whistling sounds, which explains those feedback sounds. The hearing aid itself does not cause that.
    2) A hearing aid only amplifies the sounds that you would be hearing; think contrast to the volume itself. It does not help with clarity or quality, even though technology has come a long way.
    3) A hearing aid works differently on everyone as it all comes down to how much hearing that that individual has, and whether they are able to process those "sounds" or "waves".
    4) When people hear for the first time, whether with a hearing aid or cochlear implant, they hear the "sounds" or "waves" themselves until they are able to interpret those sounds/waves into what they are, which takes time and training.
    All of this is coming from someone that worn hearing aids; I heard well for someone that was born profound deaf. I'm not better than anyone, nor can anyone be like me. I only said the above as a FYI to everyone.
    Also, CRAPtions is a perfectly described terminology for horrific closed captioning. It is something that is frustrating, even to myself, to the point that I turn them off instead.

    • @dr.eviloverlord3603
      @dr.eviloverlord3603 6 лет назад +7

      My pals and I had a conversation about this. As we theorized, some "miracle" video are staged and possibly some patients who were filmed has some connection to cochlear implant companies. This is really hard to prove, but like I say, lot of things that we (Deaf communities) couldn't put our fingers on those "miracle" video because we knew something else were going on and we have to respect people' decision about getting CI. Obviously, not all of patients going to get offers from companies to film them. Would you? I recalled there were some controversy about pay offs from companies in Deaf communities.
      To be honest, you have to ask yourself what is the purpose of those "miracle" video?
      I'm NOT sorry if this offend anybody, but this topic can be little touchy for many deaf people.

    Cracking up so hard at this, the whole time the dog is barking "omg dog please stop barking, this is overwhelming", yeah... it's pretty much like that xD That is why you see people screaming at the dogs/birds to shut up all the time.
    I'd never thought before how.. UN-peaceful having hearing really is. You kind of learn to tune a lot of noises out, but hearing every car outside, birds, dogs, people talking if you live in apartments, or the sound of water/pipes in a building, your partner breathing or snoring... on real quiet nights you can actually hear the humming of electricity.

    That was a fun video to watch! I actually had hearing aids very briefly after I went deaf because the audiologist goofed and said I still had some hearing left. My parents paid thousands for hearing aids that did absolutely nothing for me. 👍🏻

    You really won’t benefit from wearing someone else’s hearing aids, they need to be tuned to your own individual loss and audiogram. The experience would be alike someone who’s long sighted wearing a pair of glasses that corrects short sightedness. Hearing aids won’t magically restore your hearing but well tuned hearing aids could give you a good perspective of sound.
    It felt like you had already made up your mind up about them before you tried them. I’ve worn hearing aids all my life but I can imagine it would be a really odd experience to try them for the first time. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @evelynsnyder5866

      agreed, The reason they are screeching is because they don't fit your ears, or they're turned up too high. probably mostly because the molds don't fit your ears.

    • @rikkipoynter
      @rikkipoynter  6 лет назад +16

      Oh yeah, no doubt about that. Behind the scenes, I was told to move them around because the screeching was because we didn't get them in all the way. And then it would stop when it was settled. (Side note- her hearing aids screech for her very often too.) Definitely covered in the video that they were for her ears, not mine, so they wouldn't be the exact experience for me that they might have been if I got them personally made.... but I definitely don't have the thousands of dollars to drop for that video, haha! The hearing aids were definitely hiiiiiiigh.
      I've said a few times before in the past that I really haven't taken much of an interest to hearing aids prior to this video, so yeah, that thought was already there. I'm just not the person who can have things in her ears for a long period of time.

    • @0x0wlOnYT
      @0x0wlOnYT 6 лет назад +2

      @@rikkipoynter I was going to comment on this too. Hearing aids are tuned to your audiogram, and actually per ear as well. So I couldn't even use my left aid in my right ear. The screeching is because her ear mold doesn't fit in your ear properly as you noticed, and also possibly because of your hair interfering with it. I know you aren't a fan of hearing aids due to the cost and hassle, but I would keep an open mind about them. I have a profound hearing loss, likely worse than yours and I literally can't hear shit without hearing aids. With them it's a night and day difference. I can actually hear what's going on around me, although it's not a cure by any means. Hope I don't sound preachy, I'd just like to see you explore the topic a little more.

    I have a compilot with mine too! Also, regarding the expense, I managed to get my current ones through Texas DARS. I did have to prove income and insurance wouldn't cover them, but the state of Texas is surprisingly kind to its deaf / HoH population. The state also has a tuition waiver if you've lost enough hearing. As long as I go to a college or university funded by the state of Texas, my tuition is covered. Just the tuition, mind, but still quite helpful! No cap, from what I can tell, so I can use the waiver all the way through my doctorate (if I make that far).

    I actually like hearing the actual sounds anyways, but if there is a voice over option, mine isn't working. I would love to hear the voice over option while learning the signs and trying to expand my vision to see faces and hands at the same time, so the voice would really help instead of trying to read (cause im a slow reader) and missing all the visual of the video.
    On a second note, i LOVE both of your voices! As a hearing person, i could not tell either of you weren't fluent hearing/ speaking ladies. You both do such a great job, and I'm sure you both put in a lot of hard work to get there that none of us hearing people could imagine. So well done!

    Correct. My hearing aids also don't make everything clearer, and for my right ear, not loud enough, but for my left ear - ironically my worse ear on lower sounds - it is okay-ish, enough. Maybe time for reprogramming my Starkey i3 Series hearing aids I got for free cus my income still is so low. But, now with using the (FM Loop aka PocketTalker Ultra) that Deaf Services gave me through TAP programme, things can be louder for me, though, still, not necessarily more sharp. In fact, even less sharp than with just hearing aids. What's with that? Hehe. I use them and the FM Loop that streams into my hearing aids via T-coil for my college classes as I previously used for my coping skills classes for my autism.

    I think if you did this with a pair of hearing aids that were fitted to you and were set to your hearing loss. It is a HUGE adjustment when you first wear them. Costco has some “reasonably priced hearing aids, $1,600 per pair and that’s cheap unfortunately. I live my hearing aids so much. For those of us that don’t have a huge support system or a local Deaf community I feel like they can help us live in the hearing world. Of course accessibility should be mainstreamed but it’s not. As you know employers tend to discriminate and hearing aids can help mitigate some of that if it’s something you want.

Im 38 years old, Im a singer (as a hobby for now) and I work as a phone operator to actually make a living. I have moderate loss in my right ear, my loss starts around 4k. Around 8k I can only hear around 60 decibes which is loud! Anyhow, for my moderate hearing loss it has made me feel a lot better. Even singing feels better. But Im afraid my hearing loss being genetic, it wont help me for too long. It really depends on how much loss you have. Sorry for the long text. THANK YOU A LOT FOR THIS VIDEO! And all videos you do. This is my first time seeing your channel. I’m now a subscriber. 🥰Why do the hearing aides squeal? Mine only do that when I cover them. Like if I fall asleep with them in and the pillow covers it up. Or if I cup my hand over my ear to see if they are on. Sometimes if there is a really high pitch loud noise they do that as well but never like yours did. But they don’t make a constant noise like that. They make a tune when they turn on and off too. I sound totally different to myself with my hearing aides in too. I cried when I got mine, the Dr had all 4 of my kids stand behind me and talk and I couldn’t figure out who was who. It was the first time I heard their “true” voices. They all sound totally different with out my hearing aides. I think my family gets more frustrated (I have an amazing family btw) than I do about not hearing clearly. Because i have to ask them to repeat things sometimes. My oldest is 17 and she gets irritated some times and will just walk away or say never mind. That’s the one big thing that frustrates me is when people say never mind. Its not like I don’t want to know what they are saying, if that was the case I would ask them to repeat what they were saying. LOL! Did either of you do speech therapy or did you have some hearing at some point? When you both speak your voices are very clear and easy to understand even for me with out my hearing aides in. Did you grow up learning ASL? I have progressive hearing loss but so far it’s been very slow. (Knocks on wood!) There May be a point where my hearing aides don’t help any more, so I’m thinking the sooner I learn the easier it will be to transition. Do your families sign? Sorry I have so many questions. 💗🌵

Also, if your earmolds shrink, or the tubes become stiff/cracked, when you hug/chew/yawn (the earmolds move around in your ear canals and can cause the sound to leak out), or wear hats, etc. Do yours feedback when you wear hats (if you do)? Mine are very loud (I have a profound loss now, after growing up with a--like yours--slowly progressive loss that was mild-severe as a baby), and they can feedback at eeeeverything, haha. hearing guy here. Several years ago in an online forum I and a mostly deaf with cochlear implants person tended to stumble on the same topics so sometimes we'd shoot messages at each other.
    At the time he was 21. at 14 his parents ignored his wishes and had the implants put in. He informed them that when he was an adult he'd figure out how to earn enough money to have them removed. if insurance didn't cover it. Of course removing anything that's been in the body for a few years and the body's adapted/healed over the surgical insertion. Has its dangers. Never did find out after 2006 if
    anything had happened. Our messaging discussions always started with him messaging me.

      On the TV show "House", do you remember the episode where the kid removed his CI? Highly unlikely!

      to put it in perspective.. he was in college. and taking anti-depressants. plus he was one angry man. every third post in forums was about his anger at being forced to hear when he didn't want it. So as I said I hope he has found a way to be happy.. because he considered the implants to be torture from his parents

    I’m extremely hard of hearing. I wear hearing aides sometimes. It’s overwhelming to hear all the time. I haven’t heard a lot of sounds so it’s hard to tune them out. I have a hearing service dog. She’s AMAZING! But hearing aides are EXPENSIVE here in the USA. Most insurances do NOT cover them! They can range in cost from $700 to well over $5,000 per hearing aide!! My hearing aides cost $1,500 per ear! So $3,000 total! But mine weren’t even the best ones out. They were a high quality but that’s all we could afford. Now they make ones that can get wet and ones you can’t even see. Mine are super small. I have VERY EXTREMELY small ears. Like new born infant ears. So I got Pediatric hearing aides and I still had to have braces put on them to keep them in my ears. When I would open my mouth they would pop out with out the brace in them. They are really comfortable as far as hearing aides go, they have a small tube that comes out of the ear and wraps around the top and back of my ear with a very tiny circuit box thing. (Where the battery goes and the on off switch). But I also have to wear glasses and sometimes it’s just too much on my ears, they start to hurt. I honestly don’t wear them often. I can go a month or two some times with out using them. It just depends on what I’m up to. Having my service dog makes that possible for me. Also there are times I can’t wear them, like when I have ear infections and that happens a lot!! On average I have 10+ ear infections a year! I haven’t learned ASL yet. But some day I hope to. 🥰

    I've only known one deaf person in my life. But I've always wanted to learn sign language! Idk why lol but I think it should be a thing that we all should learn.

    I just recently found your channel through Molly Burke. I also live in NC. I don't know if you go to church but my gmaws church has a whole section for the deaf. They have a huge community at church and the church does awesome things for our deaf. If you're ever around Concord,NC you'll have to let me know so you can check them out.

    Love this! I remember asking my audiologist for those hearing aids. And their response was they were not strong enough to help me. I use the Phonak Naida V Up Had them for years. But the weird thing is any time I wear hearing aids everything is always muffled to a point. Some things are clear. Other things are eye and brain jarring painful. But This may be just for fun but it is informative either way. Gives people an idea of what goes on day to day of what we might hear *laughs* And my h earing aids are pink. The molds are black and neon pink swirls and the tubes ( bought it on amazing) are pink teehee

      Heee those sound fun! I have dark red Phonak Naida Q70UP's, with skeleton earmolds, and a Roger Pen. My loss was slowly progressive from birth (mild-severe ski-slope), to now (profound). I normally just turn my hearing aids up all the way and leave them there. The loudness doesn't hurt, and sometimes I need it (and enjoy it). Listening when they feedback is fun too, at certain times, haha. :P There are times even with them and my gizmos, I struggle. YES! It's always a big shock when I first put them in and turn them on... after the little tune plays, it's like, "BLASTS OF SOUNDS FROM EVERYTHING AND EVERYWHERE!"...and then I acclimate after awhile and things are better. :)

    This video was an interesting experience to watch. And it seems it was a cool experiment for you as well. I have learned so much watching your videos. Btw Chrissy's hair is very cool.
