What's interesting and wonderful about the Recuerdos is that the melody is played by the tremolo part (played by the fingers) and the accompaniment is played by the single notes (played by the thumb). Most often, it's the tremolo that's playing the chordal accompaniment. So this piece presents in interesting challenge for the performer. This happens to be a particularly beautiful performance, and as usual, Smalin made a very clear and attractive animation for it. This is what makes youtube good.
Thank you so much for putting this up. I have enjoyed your vids for a while now, but as a classical guitarist myself, it is really something special to see a video for Recuerdos. Thanks again!
Something I've wished for since seeing a musical light display at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry in the 1960s. Thanks for posting these amazing visuals.
I always enjoy a good dose of Visual Music, gives my eyes something to do, my ears something to do, so I can get some serious well being business taken care of...that is, let the body Not Do Anything for a few minutes. it really helps. now I can tackle a task...something interesting like, tuning the upper waterfall or irrigating the Winter Garden...with this music still in my ears....thanks for putting something good on the wwweb.
@xulinhuu No, it's not out yet; sorry. When it comes out, I'll probably do a RUclips video announcement/ad for it, and put a note on my Twitter feed, so if you want to know when about it, you should subscribe to one of those.
@alsolendski I think you'll like it. The animations look much better than what you get on RUclips (smoother scrolling, richer colors, higher resolution), and you can stretch/squeeze to change the horizontal scale (close-up to see more detail, wider scope to see more structure). Plus I'll be able to include several versions of the animation in each package, and you'll be able to switch between them on the fly while the music is playing, to see different aspects of what's going on.
At 0:48, there's a mistake in the visualization (only the low now should be sounding). Other than that, you should just look at the sheet music (it's at IMSLP dot org) to see how it works.
@Etrocalpoops There isn't any hard-and-fast rule; I sometimes try it various ways and pick the one I like best. Some structural things show up better with the bar-graph version, so if what's most interesting about a piece is structural, I tend to use that. If you look on my "spillover" channel (musanim), you'll find multiple versions of some pieces; you can compare those and see which versions appeal to you to get a sense of how I make the decision.
@bransonguitar What do you mean by "should"? That you personally prefer it that way, or that it's notated that way and you think performers should not take liberties in deviating from the notation? Whichever, please explain your reasons.
@smalin Well, to roll or not to roll, that is the question with chords. Sometimes composers indicate that a chord should be rolled or arpeggiated, but there's no firm or fast rule, and they rarely notate it; it truly is a subjective artistic decision. I've played it both ways over the years and it certainly is fine either way. There is no "should". Thanks Jim, for the "thumbs up" The fine nuances of classical guitar do need to be discussed because they are very important.
For a given piece of music, that's usually true. However, piano music tends to be music more complex than guitar music, so playing the hardest piano music on the piano is at least as difficult as playing the hardest guitar music on guitar.
What about at 0:48, where the Purple string and Aqua string are played together while there is tremolo picking in the Yellow string? Maybe it's the note that's missing in 0:54? Or what about at 2:16? Those simultaneous notes with the tremolo picking seem impossible to perform!
I agree, though keyboard instruments offer so much more control over different voices. That is why lately I've preferred to play Bach on the piano as opposed to neo-classical on guitar.
Is there a reason that you sometimes use the bubble representations over the bar ones, or do you just decide one would be better for a specific piece of music?

I'm glad you think so.
Es muy bella esta pieza. Todo lo de este canal Smalin es muy bonito, complejo y realmente artístico. Muchas gracias.
To peruse my recent work, please see this page: www.musanim.com/RUclipsHighlights/
Such a unique way to actually view this beautiful piece of music as it is being played. Enjoyed it very much.

Krásná,jemná,citlivá hra,video zajímavě doplňuje a evokuje představy.Díky
Watching this with the sound down you can still see / hear the music in your mind. Nicely done.

@veers0r The last note is longer because the first note is missing; the third version of this video (link in the FAQ) makes this clearer.
Superb phrasing and dynamics, just the right tempo. And the animation is very well done.
Makes me feel like I am sitting on a balcony in Venice watching the sun set. The acoustic guitar is great and relaxing. Thank you!
Close! Replace Venice with Granada, which is where the Alhambra is located :)
Simplemente bello...
the visuals are mezzmerizingly beautiful ~ thank you, I do enjoy your videos!
What a beautiful piece! THanks for all you do to bring us this wonderful caleidoscope of colours and sweet sounds smalin :)
This is really interesting and a very nice performance. I love the guitar videos and I hope to see more of them.

are you aware that you have made this world a much better place?
MARAVILLOSO, GRANADA ESTARA SIEMPRE EN MI CORAZON ES UNA CIUDAD BELLISIMA, LA ADORO.............................. LA MUSICA IMPECABLE !!!!!!!
Ahhh I haven't heard this in years. Well done as always.
Awesome playing & amazing composition by Tarrega.
Wow it really extend your comprehension of the individual strings.
beautiful
I love this version, it's easy to follow
We selected this song to be played at our wedding last year, just amazing.

It brings a tear to my eye, so beautiful.
wow!i like these sound effect!soothes our soul!
Outstanding! The best so far for MAM
@alsolendski I am going to make an iPhone/iPad/iPad app for my animations; it will probably be out in a month or so.
@arog96 I don't know. The Björk/Biophilia project is going more slowly than I expected; I'm still in the middle of that.
This is the best one of the visualizations, perfect for this song, but at about 50 seconds one of the middle green notes isn't visible.
@snipersEND I'm planning to do one more in the short term.
hermosa pieza..... hermosísima...!!

That's crazy. By the way, thanks for all the videos Smalin. I love them.
This song is beautiful!
Wonderful. I hope someday you'll work on Villa Lobos' Uirapuru. Ok,I know what you thing about requests, it's not happening again :-)
I made a version of it available (it's free, on my web site) in 2006; I haven't published another version since then (though I may in the future).

I made it with software that I wrote myself. You can learn about this project on my web site.
@bransonguitar What do you mean by "should"? That you personally prefer it that way, or that it's notated that way and you think performers should not take liberties in deviating from the notation? Whichever, please explain your reasons.
Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Bravo!
thanks so much...wonderful..
The thumb plays all the slower lower notes, and the first three fingers play the repeating high notes.
@businessmann54 I wrote some software to do it.
Awesome, rally impresive work. Thanks 4 Sharing
@smalin

BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!
Simplemente hermosa
thank you, sir. i needed that!
Simply beautiful!
beautiful =3
my goal before the end of this year, is to play this piece!
I went a couple summers ago! It's lovely.
@businessmann54 Sorry, I don't understand the question.
@arog96 You don't have to imagine (I've posted several pieces by Chopin).
love it so much it is really amazing
Reminds me of a lone wolf trekking the desert. Very nice!
Beautiful

Hela mitt huvud fylls av blider och en massa tänk. Det är ju detta jag behöver när jag tecknar.......Kram och god natt!
Very nice playing.
PM
I like both.
You can totally see the Alhambra in the tremolo at 1:50 :)
so. awesome.
Who needs a trip to spain when you have this? Thank you!
+Propa Gandalf If you think that, then I think YOU need a trip to Spain. :-)
smalin Haha its ok :) Been there several times, i live in germany. But your music shall be my inner trip to spain
Is this really Spanish? If anything I'd say Italian
Wait no just read the title, still sounds Italian
@@jaybonn5973 Yep, it is Spanish alright. The composer, Tarrega, was a Spaniard.
Was this in some civilization game?
What about at 0:48, where the Purple string and Aqua string are played together while there is tremolo picking in the Yellow string?
Maybe it's the note that's missing in 0:54?
Or what about at 2:16? Those simultaneous notes with the tremolo picking seem impossible to perform!
What do you mean?
Thank you, is it possible for you to upload it in the piano version please :)
Genious idea
I agree, though keyboard instruments offer so much more control over different voices. That is why lately I've preferred to play Bach on the piano as opposed to neo-classical on guitar.
Thumbs up!!!
The tremolo part reminds me much of Mikis Theodorakis compositions. has the one studied the other one's works or vice versa?
Do you consider this a "new" one or an "old" one?
Why are you so amazing?
Is there any way you can post a version of La Catedral by Agustin Barrios?
Is there a reason that you sometimes use the bubble representations over the bar ones, or do you just decide one would be better for a specific piece of music?
so happy I found you 9:30pm 8/2/16
I've been to Alhambra =P Twice!
How does he do the top part while playing the lower parts?
@smalin wew im waiting for that :)
not to mention that the sound of a guitar is much more organic and versatile (at least in my opinion)
is said software available? (totally understandable if you want to keep it for yourself)
This is also made by Mike Oldfield - love this :)
@smalin is it out? if so give me the name please :)
This music appears in the OST of "the killing fields", but with other instruments
you have to make an app like tap game for this!
how did you make it with witch software
People who play guitar should learn this instead of crappy 80's rock songs. That would be something worth bragging about.
These guitar pieces are nice but try not to let them overtake your channel please, thanks!
Is this possible to play on the piano??
Holy crap are you really Jim Greeninger?
It is a piano piece!!
This piece is where Mike Oldfield's "Etude" came from.
Which key is this in?
quitar music is the music of the swordsman
i have the feeling that the guitarist has a major case of RSI after this :\
Larva brought me here
Let's see Tom Morello do THAT.
Yes, but it doesn't sound nearly as nice.
