  • Yes, this is what I've been working on relentlessly for the past months. Call of duty zombies is a game mode that has a very special place in my heart. So I thought it was only appropriate to look back on all the different iterations, and give my thoughts and opinions on how the games evolved. I was considering splitting the video up into parts, but I personally prefer this long form content, although I have left timestamps to the different games.

As terrifying as it was for 8 year old me at the time, I will never regret sitting through the credits of WaW and suddenly ending up in a boarded up building surround by darkness and ominous fog as zombies started tearing down all the barriers and all I had was a 1911. That memory will always stay with me.

I know this is old but it reminds me of my childhood friend who had rich parents always buy him the console, games and DLC’s. When the first expansion came out his mom bought it and we grinded der reise for like 15 hours straight. He was moving across the country in like a month at that point so she let me stay over for like 4 days and we just gamed and had fun. I can see why transit was so heavily disliked but the glitch where you could get 8 people into the game made the map so good. It was insane having 8 of ur mates all running around the same zombies map. The best part was only the host had to stay in the game for it to run so if one friend had to drop it would be fine and someone else could join. I remember being the host a couple times and ending up with friends of friends etc… being in the game.

@billcipher8942 It actually did make the map better to some extent. Tranzit is a big map, so more manpower is essential. You don't need to take the bus to do objectives, because some other person was already at the location.

But if you check the code, there are still remnants of pack a punched guns that are fully modeled and ready to use. They'll down you instantly if you use them, but you CAN spawn them in via console commands.

I've been watching this video in parts for almost a week, and it's been more entertaining than watching a show! And I watched this even though I know everything about this incredibly underrated mode.
I have a lot of respect for this video, I hope it keeps getting traction and shows more people how amazing this mode is, and how it could actually could keep producing more bangers in the future.

Honestly, I loved when cod was strictly survival based with a little story through. Loved it when Easter eggs were hidden and a side quest to those who wanted to perform it. A large part of the fun with random players was when half the team knows of the Easter egg and then they would relay and reach others. In return you would attempt it yourself and teach any other randoms who didn’t know of the secret side quest. This to me, is the best balance of cod zombies. Once the Easter eggs started becoming a must do part, the mode became lackluster no matter how great the maps and story were. I loved the simplicity. Once you start having to perform quest in order to survive and go farther. Zombies began to feel like a chore. All of a sudden you found yourself searching up 10-15 min walkthroughs of how to perform every step to complete the Easter egg and story. A large part of the fun for me was sucked out. You lost that slight community element that older titles contained. Now the only community you get are those wanted to go as far as possible or those who don’t care to play zombies because they don’t want to learn the 30 step process to engage in a map.

Its why I love Town and Nuketown zombies in bo2, and WaW is my favorite zombies game. You aren't characters in the first two waw maps or the BO2 survival maps, you're you. It makes it more immersive and engaging when the characters aren't spittin quips every 10 seconds. They're simple, effective and fun.

You nailed it. I’m fine with people and the community as a whole preferring the Skyrim quest maps. I hate taking years to get setup personally and get bored super quick on solo but to each their own. What I hate is the toxicity towards people like us who like it old school. We’re always told to shut up and play old maps as innovation is the future yet they are the same people who complain about cod’s multiplayer being boring and beg it to be like MW2. It’s just annoying how our points are brushed off because we prefer the unpopular opinion.

    • @trevordavis6830
      @trevordavis6830 2 года назад +9

Yeah, I think COD zombies is a good example on why you shouldn't always listen to your hardcore audience. While the big and elaborate easter eggs were great for hardcore community who were caught up on the story and loved spending hours if not days trying to figure out how to perform them, as a casual player who just wanted to enjoy the survival co-op it just made the maps incredibly confusing with all the different convoluted mechanics and quests you had to do.

Also RUclips ruining any kind of discovery for video games by providing the freaking CODE of the game being dissected to figure out steps like dear lord guys maybe just enjoy the mystery. Even to this day random today are more retarded than the few during peak days of Black Ops 2 which I always found a competent team that wanted to pursue these. Black Ops 3 comes around and the community is now braindead and anytime you get close to finishing the other players or simply one of them ends up doing something to ruin the experience of completing these. And to those who say “Don’t do it with randoms” are exactly the same people who ruin the easter egg because of whatever stupidity they want to come up with

You have to remember BoD technically takes place between Zetsebo No Shima and Gorod Krovi, and the crew wasn't officially introduced to Dr. Monty until after killing Ultimas Nikolai, so it makes sense that at this point this is their first time hearing about him.

Cold War is technically set in a rebooted universe but it's still a sequel at the same time to the events that happened prior in Cod Zombies. At the end of Bo4 after Nikolai sends the entire multiverse that was corrupted with 115, keeper and apothicon influence into the dark aether putting an end to all the misery and suffering the cycle had caused Samantha and Eddie walk into the light which was a gateway into a new universe that was initially free from anything having to do with the aether. Until the endstation experiments opened the rift into the dark aether which has since then changed and evolved and yatata. Point being Cw's Samantha and Eddie are the exact same versions from the old aether story and weren't reborn but they just entered that reality as seen at the end of Bo4. However Samantha seems to have amnesia about it and was an orphan upon entering Cw's universe, But it's implied Eddie might remember the past events of the aether story in the god forsaken intel in CW. The only thing similar about this universe to the prior existing ones is that the events of the campaigns play out the same, at least waw and bo1 which lead into this game.

And I actually do appreciate what Craig Houston is doing with the story aside from what I just mentioned. But I think it doesn't spike the same interest I had in the og aether where things were abit more mysterious and lore heavy even later on. Sorta the same way fnaf had it's initial following. But a good story obviously doesn't need to be cryptic. I still see some hope for Zombies but fnaf is flimsy on the other hand, I think they went a little overboard. Treyarch did all of that crap to keep people from having infinite space to train which would make the map "too easy". A lot of BO1 maps were labeled as too easy thus Tranzit was supposed to be challenging. You can see the same idea with Die Rise, they didn't want to make easy maps so they made shitty maps instead.

I used to always get cod games for the Zombies, yet I had a gut feeling to wait on Vanguard. A week (or two, I don't remember) after launch, there was a free access trial and I couldn't even play on the servers. So I went offline to try out the game, I played 2 games and I felt I played everything the zombies mode had to offer, which was everything the game WOULD OFFER for like 3-4 months after launch due to lack of updates and basic zombies features missing (like no PAP camo, wall buys, buildables, wonder weapons, Easter egg, fun, a PAUSE BUTTON🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️)

Haven't even finished watching this video but I gotta say I love it. It makes me long for the days of WaW/BO style zombies as that's what I grew up with when I was in middle school. As time went on, I grew distant from CoD in general but always tried to keep the zombies in mind, I'd watch videos of the popular YT'ers covering the zombies mode but it just kinda lost it's flair after a while. I thoroughly enjoy all of the QoL mechanics they added in later iterations, especially in Cold War but I really wish they went back to a more grounded sci-fi approach rather than the blatant fantasy tropes that have been included nowadays.
I'm sincerely hoping for a solid zombies/cod refresh soon, so that the companies who makes these games really understand what we as the fanbase truly want.
Thanks for making this video. It was a huge nostalgia trip and your coverage of it was second to none.

For as long as I live I will never understand why people shit all over WW2 zombies as much as they do. As someone who has put 3000+ hours into WW2 zombies, there is a lot more fun to be had than people give it credit for. With all of the different mods and special abilities you can bring into a match it really spices up the gameplay, completely changing up the play style for whatever you feel like doing. There’s got to be almost 100 different challenges to do on every map to unlock playable characters, 100’s of variants to unlock for all of the guns by getting them in supply drops, loads of daily orders, weekly orders and contracts to complete to get said supply drops, fun and engaging Easter eggs with challenging boss fights (for the most part). I’ve had more fun, made loads of friends online and most of all made the best memories from WW2 zombies
With that said, awesome video man. It was great to see someone review the entirety of the zombies franchise in one video. 6 hours might seem like a really long video but honestly, I could’ve sat and listened to you talk about zombies for another 6 hours

For me, WW2 wasn't all that bad as people make it out to be, but it has the same problem IW has where they put all there eggs in 1 basket.
Final Reich was very fun, but there is a problem structurally where it is a launch map that blows every other map in the game out of the water. Treyarch, even at their worst, never had this problem, where every map that came out afterwards didn't hold up.
I will say though i do like The Shadowed Throne and Groestan Haus.

    • @lost8257
      @lost8257 2 года назад

WW2 is really good zombie wise. Final Reich is actually pretty top tier imo. Shadowed throne is good, but the second dlc map (can't remember the name of it) is terrible, simply because of the boss zombie. It moves faster then you, can 1 shot you, has a ranged attack that is almost undodgable, and is obscured by fog. That's not even talking about the super one you have to fight for the easter egg. I hate this boss zombies, and it has caused me to not play that map at all.

Jimmy’s run on zombies was definitely my favorite time period of zombies. I can appreciate most of the treyarch maps after his and Cold War really invigorated my love towards zombies but I just never could 100% vibe with any of the other maps post Buried. Origins just had too much going on for me and a lot of the maps that followed are pretty much the same. Too much setting up to get stuff that on other maps weren’t too difficult or complex to achieve. The zombies maps I love the most are simple at face value and are perfectly fine to casual players but are as deep and complex as the BO3 and BO4 maps if you go out of your way for it. Plus Jimmy’s maps just had a horror vibe to them even if they never to me were actually ‘scary’. I was a big fan of that over the love craft, mystical adventures of Origins onward. Moon, has always been my favorite map for that reason.
I do like and even love some of the post Buried maps like Der Eisendrasche, Groda Krovi and Nine but non of then just hit me right in the nostalgia until Cold War with Die Maschine and ESPECIALLY Maur Der Toten. That map is an instant classic to me.
But I 100% get why people love Origins and BO3’s run on zombies. It gave players a mission and tasks to do other than survive everytime you loaded up a game.

In BO2 I dont remember having to look everyting up on youtube like the new BO3 maps and Orgins, that disrupt the flow of gameplay in my opinion.
Moon is stil my favorite, the moon ee mostly revolves around getting the wonder weapons and completing a few steps and pressing some buttons.
Also the map is perfectly playable without doing the ee like I mostly do.

Treyarch should have kept Jason Blundell and Jimmy Zielinski as a pair, so they continue to workshop new ideas for zombies to have prevented it from becoming stale, they both had great ideas, but together, I feel they could have revolutionized the Co-Op survival game modes in CoD.
Treyarch needs Zielinski's ideas, at the same time, needs Blundell's steady hand. I would rather have a couple maps that's a complete flop that adds new mechanics that keeps new maps fresh that leads to a great map like Der Reise, Buried, MotD (Mob of the Dead), CotD (Call of the Dead), and Five.
Black Ops 3 I can't say much on, Shadows of Evil is probably the only map I played quite a lot, since I didn't have any of the DLC until after BO4 came out and didn't get a chance to play them much. Just wish SoE wasn't the release map feels more like a DLC map with how much there is. Probably the best map the latter half of Black Ops (3 & 4) zombies. Black Ops 4 is such a blur for me, I don't remember much of the maps and story, but I remember I only played the release maps.
I haven't played Infinite and Advanced Warfare zombies as much as the rest, so I have no input on any of those maps.
I only played the release map of WW2 and never played the rest or came back to play the release map.
I feel that Ghosts had a interesting idea, flopped in my opinion, but, overall I enjoyed my experience.
Cold War was a breath of fresh air to me, it was the first zombies where I had completed the Easter eggs/stories. A great balance of the good parts of BO3 and BO4. I wasn't a big fan of the new mechanics like salvage (Was tolerable), the multiplayer feel, and the new point system, making replaying maps a chore after completing the Easter eggs. I absolutely hated the Easter egg process in Outbreak, making it near impossible to complete solo if you play casually, and such a drag even with a full squad, never completed it to this day. The story is hit and miss, could have been done completely different to make it less boring and a slog to do. Best part is going into the Aether in Die Maschine, wishing they had something that matched the feel in the other maps. All of the maps have their own goods and bads, but all are overall pretty well made, just wish Outbreak wasn't just copy and paste MP maps, they could have done smaller new maps, or had done something to make them stand out more.
Never played Vanguard, and might not, after buying MW Reboot and Cold War, it just didn't feel like the CoD MP I enjoyed from the past, which carried onto Cold War Zombies, causing me to delete Cold War after completing the Easter eggs I had done, making me wish I had waited to buy it on discount, and completely regret getting MW.

I still remember waking up at 4am on Christmas morning when I was 12 to find a copy of Black Ops for my PS3 and going on to play zombies the entire day until I was cut off by my mom around 8 that evening. Playing those maps for the first time will forever be one of my favorite memories from my childhood when it comes to video games.

Great video! Except... Cold War IS directly connected to the Aether storyline.
The Dark Aether storyline takes place in the "new world" that the characters helped create by offing themselves.
Samantha in this world? She's the sam who went through the portal at the end of Tag. Likewise with Rochtofen, aka, The Director.
The Dark Aether is the dimension where all of the crao from the previous storyline got dumped at the end of Tag. That's why there are robots in it, Apothicon type monsters, and zombies/ 115.

I still play BO3 Zombies and Custom Zombies and stream it time to time. I'm stuck in that era of zombies and probably won't ever move on. Cold war zombies are ok and more user friendly for first timers, but us old day one's seem to love bo2 and bo3 zombies the best by far. None of my buddies play it anymore so I will be solo until they take down the servers. Great Video man!!!

I love this video! I think something you touch on that I introspected on. After BO1 I tapped out of zombies because of Tranzit being garbage. I started hearing zombies was making a come back, but it had weird Lovecraftian aspects to it and I couldn't enjoy the story because of that. You state BO4 neglected a lot of fans, but I also feel that way about BO3. I love BO3 for the gameplay, mod community, etc. But what I found interesting about zombies story died quickly. I hate sounding like a boomer, because as someone who likes Halo I know what it's like for people to only praise the originals and completely discredit anything the sequels tried as garbage, can be frankly annoying. However, even now that I've gone back and played every aspect of zombies, there's something I love about the story being rooted in conspiracy theories in real life and taking them to an extreme.

Dang, this is pretty good. I never played Zombies past Bo1 but I enjoyed hearing about all of the kooky stuff that the later maps got up to.
    Moon rocks tho

solid video, although hearing "worst" and "best" when going through the maps got pretty annoying; you said multiple wonder weapons were the worst ones like half a dozen times

Bro the ending of tag makes me so sad, zombies brought me closer with my friends and cousins.
So the line of Nikolai saying they were his friends, his brothers hits me different.
