Jimi Hendrix answers question, who's the best guitarist!

- I've heard many names thrown out about this. The most probable if it was said is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Funny this show Billy was on didn't spell his name right. They left the S off the end. Here is really what Jimi said. A very humble answer! Of course the point of this video is to show that Jimi is not recorded anywhere saying who he thought was "the best". His humbleness shows when he says, "how about the best sitting in this chair". Which means whoever sat in it next could be the best. I shouldn't have to spell it out like this but so many responses here are so ignorantly missing the point!
Just learned e minor chord today. I think I'm the greatest.
;)
Keep it up. you may be one day. i surely am not.
Practice. Persistence. Study. Listen to a lot of music. RUclips is a great resource. Give yourself an hour a day, at least, if not more
the problem is not e minor its like jimi do it sound different in pentatonix scale, eric clapton also use that at this time but sound like a baby playing
Now. The power chord. Embrace the dark side!
Jimi was so humble. He just wanted to spread love & happiness with his music & was always trying to push his boundaries towards the infinite
If he could only be with us today; we could sure use his presence.

Haha! Jimi came and went with a comet. I'm not religious. I believe in that guy. He changed shit. Ask his contemporaries.
Not only is Billy a great guitarist but he is also a great guitar historian. The knowledge he has is amazing. Rip Dusty also.
J. Hendrix was very unique and immensely influential as a rock guitarist. But calling someone ''best guitarist'' is silly and Jimi knew it. There are lots of ''best guitarists'' around, which is wonderful for music, of course.
Right! I don't think there could ever be a best guitarist, the only thing that matters is who you like the most and whoever's playing makes you happy
A man that is great admitting that many are greater, RIP Jimi.
Yeah, you could see that while he was a little flattered he was also a little embaffessed. That is such a stupid, insipid, and lame talk show question.
If god were there in that seat, the interviewer would have asked him, "so, I hear that a great many people think that you're the greatest person in the world".

Rest peacefully Jimi. You were a beast on the guitar and are still missed.

This is actually one of the things that made Hendrix one of the greatest guitarists ever. The fact that he never stopped thriving for more, the fact that he always saw place for improvement. It saddens me to think what great music his death deprived us of, and the horizons it deprived him of.
Absolutely.
He died 52 years ago at age 27. No one has sounded like him since. Frozen in time.

Exactly and comparing him to Wes Montgomery Jimi Hendrix > Wes Montgomery
I think Jimi was one of the best because of his creativity with his blend of psychedelic, rock, and blues. And the fact that he made such creative music within 3 years? Imagine if he had been around for a decade? I started listening to Jimi Hendrix only 4 or 5 years ago, and I still feel like his death is one of the most tragic things to ever happen to music. He could have gone to do amazing things! So much potential.
He was and your right he would have really made some magic. His music was getting better and better as he went on. Idk if you ever listen to any of his stuff with band of gypsies but that was really great too.
I think if he was alive he wasn't a Legend like he is today ...because Eddie Van Halen surpassed him ...I not trying to said Jimi was good what I want to said Eddie Van Halen change the way the Electric Guitar should be play ....
Billy gibbons really is underrated, he has so much feel, taste and tone! So cool that Hendrix saw it too!

I look at it this way!!, Jimi Hendrix is the BEST Guitar Player in the world!!!, when he played, he made sounds that came out of the guitar that NO ONE could duplicate!!!, without using a foot pedal or other things, etc.!! TO ME, that is the world's best guitar player!!!👍👍
@@goodguygto To you, he may be. To the instrument as a whole, he isn’t even considered.

Terry Kath was said to be the best in Jimi's opinion. That's the big reason he had Chicago open for him.
I remember watching that video of him playing blues on an acoustic guitar, and when he realized he was being filmed he was like “ahh man don’t waste the film”.
I always think of him as such a kind and respectful man.
The definition of a humble person.
Hendrix was far from humble.
Rhythmicons
Fck's your problem?
Don't deify the man, he was a woman-beating egotist. I love his music but let's be real.
Rhythmicons beating a woman in the 60s is very, very different than beating a woman in 2018. I understand that doesn't make it right but he was also very drunk and very remorseful both mornings after. I think he did it twice, so doesnt warrant a tag such as "woman beater"
Are you kidding? You just rationalized domestic violence based on the classic "hearts and flowers" excuse. If you beat your woman that makes you a woman beater. Don't let your admiration for the guy cloud your judgement and don't rationalize hitting women based on what decade it occurred in.
The best guitarist isn't (or rather, need not be) Hendrix or Clapton or any other choice. The best guitarist is whatever guitarist moves you the most. Maybe that's Hendrix, maybe that's Segovia, maybe that's the Rev. Gary Davis, or maybe it's the kid next door. Making music is not like running a race; there is no objective measure of greatness. Whoever moves you the most, they're the best.
Exactly. No one can who's better looking between Roseanne Barr and Katy Perry. It's all subjective
The best guitarist isn’t a choice. The Guitarist that moves me happens to be Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy. Well said, There is no best...
Clapton as a guitarist is overrated. Love his style though.

The flying fingers of Roy Clark, his broad range of styles and mastery of technic were mesmerizing. He could nail any style and genre from complicated classical Flamingo to rock, and his improvisations were exceptional. Master guitarist and entertainer who could also sing and harmonize. That whole interview is so great. Jimi is the perfect example of a shy introverted humble insecure person who goes onstage and lets the music do all the talking. My favorite part is when he tries to explain that being loud is not necessarily powerful or meaningful, it can just hurt your ears without meaning anything if you think just turning up the volume makes it powerful. I feel like he predicted the early 2000s downfall of rock music just by imagining it and fearing it way before it happened.
The downfall of Rock music was in the early to mid Eighties.

Jimi was humble and insecure, that's why he was so great, if he listened to everyone telling him he was the best,he would have no need to improve.
He was the greatest because he sold his soul to the devil...
I just meant that he was famously insecure about his abilities, apparently he would watch other bands' recording sessions to see how good their guitarists were, one time he was watching Jethro Tull and asked someone if Martin Barre was better than him. What a great guy Jimi must have been, down to earth and kind. Seems like it anyway.
It isn't just Jimi Hendrix who sung Billy Gibbons' praise. Once Robin Trower was asked if he had seen any guitarists he liked while on tour. He replied, "Billy Gibbons." The interviewer asked if there was anyone else he liked and Trower said, "No, not really."
I'm glad he said Billy Gibbons because Billy is such a cool and nice guy, and a true blues rock player.

So my new way of thinking about it is this: the greatest guitar player of all time hasn't been born yet.
The correct answer to the question, 'Who's the best guitarist' is 'Best at doing what?' I would say that the best guitarist at playing Layla is probably Clapton, the best at playing the end solo of Comfortably Numb is probably Gilmour, the best at playing Samba pa ti is almost certainly Carlos Santana. The list goes on and on, I'm sure you get my drift.
If your criteria for 'best' is fastest, possibly Malmsteen, most technically accomplished, maybe Petrucci or Vai or Satriani. It depends how you are judging it. How can you make a valid comparison between John Williams, Paco de Lucia and Mark Tremonti, all brilliant in their own field of expertise, not one of them is better than the others.

The real answer is: nobody. Everyone brings something different to the table. There are many “greats” that anyone could list according to their tastes. Despite society’s constant efforts, music is not a competition. Certain techniques can be measured and quantified, but creativity can not be measured by empiricism. When art becomes a competition, creativity is lost.

I heard Jimi's favorite was Terry Kath of Chicago.
Glenn Campbell & Roy Clark
Jimi was very humble when he spoke about his playing. He often redirected comments from interviewers to other guitarists he enjoyed - especially young up and coming players that were not as well known whom he wanted to give kudos to including ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath of Chicago Transit Authority. In his final interview just a day or two before he died in England Jimi also mentioned listening to the guitarists who played in Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys whom he heard on records growing up and had heard on radio broadcasts of live performances and or transcribed radio programs aired over time. For years I heard that Jimi had told Dick Cavett that young Youngstown, Ohio upstart guitarist Phil Keaggy of Glass Harp (Pro-rock trio signed to Decca) was the greatest guitarist in the world. Of course everryone now knows that is untrue. I asked Phil about it 22 years ago and he said he'd heard that story over the years and it had become somewhat of an urban legend which he competely discounted as being totally impossible and highly improbable that Jimi would have ever even heard of him. He said, "If Jimi had mentioned me, he probably said I was the shortest guitarist in the world," in referemce to his diminutive 5 foot 2 inch height. Others have claimed Clapton made the comment about Phil in Rolling Stone which is completely untrue. Stephen Stills and Ted Nugent both mentioned Phil in Guitar Player magazine interviews back in the 70's but their comments weren't anything like this urban legend linked to Jimi. There will never be another Jimi Hendrix!
ChristianFreedude Wow, I thought Paul Kossoff was short at 5'3. I think it looks cool though, these guys apparently have huge guitars. ;)
