Another great video, and an unboxing to boot. I had planned to pass this up; both because I only have one table that's playing 5th edition, and because I wasn't expecting reasonable quality for the cost. Some degree of pringleing is to be expected from a WotC foil print but otherwise the cards look great and the book seems like a good quality sourcebook for one of the ultimate menace items. I might have to pick it up eventually.
Thank you for this unboxing video! Always loved the Deck of Many Things, especially after seeing it absolutely derail a campaign in less than an hour 😅
I had no interest in this, but after I watched the D&D presentation with Jason Tondro they got my attention, after learning James Wyatt worked on this too I was even more interested, and then I was a little set back when I heard de Armas also worked in this one. I am mostly interested in the use of the deck as a Tool to use in play with little prep time; it seems you can use it to design Adventures, Encounter Decks, NPCs, PC Backgrounds, etc. I would love to see how they developed those ideas. Thanks for the page throughs!
there is one page in the smaller book that depicts Magic the Gathering cards.. I'm going to explore that in a future video, but ironically, I've used MtG cards in the past to craft up adventures for D&D as well.
at 8:16 I made a BIG mistake.. I'm working on a clarifying video to correct my statement, but suffice it to say.. there _are_ player options, an adventure (of sorts), and a few other things... yeah, it would have been extra special for the collector's edition to stand out; perhaps they should have had non-foil, no-gold for the regular version and foils with gold gilding for the collector's but... who am I to say?
I mostly do digital books for the sake of my shelves and wallet, but this release may just be an exception. I really like the look of the cards (even with the curving), and the Adventure spread sounds like a fun way to do one-shots at, say, an event or gathering.
i like the cards, even though I have a couple of other Deck of Many Things already, but the material provided here is perfect for some one shots, and even to incorporate into one's homebrew campaign.
There's a pretty good chance that this product will be my last purchase for 5th ed. I have gathered a fair amount of products over the years, and I think this one will wrap things up. I appreciate what they've done here, and it looks like a product with universality between the different releases they've had over the years.
I'm in a similar situation, I have decided to back Tales of the Valiant and really like the direction it is going in. As a backer I have been able to see more details than most people have seen just in the Alpha Release. This one product though seems to have been built pretty well and even though the cost is significantly higher than I am used to paying for new content. I think this may be a must buy for me.

There's a couple of things I don't understand: - The book only covers the 22 original cards?! What about all 66? Also - when you draw a card, are there multiple ways each card can have an effect? Do you roll a die to determine what effect? Many thanks
aye, the Book of Many Things covers the core 22 cards, but the smaller book that is in the box with the cards covers the others. I'm working on a video that will super clarify a lot of that. As for cards and effects, yes, there are multiple ways it can work; depends on if it's right side up or upside down, but that too will be a subject of a video.
that would be a fair assessment.. I mean, the book itself (the larger book) goes into both the base 22 cards but also what more they can grant access to, or what they have influenced, or what might be seeking them out... The smaller book lists how to use all the cards.
Are the individual chapters super specific to being used with the magic item itself? For example does the Devil card (Flames) chapter apply to helping the dm run adventures involving devils?
the best answer I can give is... sortav. The chapter detailing the Flames card, for example, provides 3 fiends that you can put into your campaign/adventure. You can use one, two, or all three, and it explains how they are tethered to that card. Also included are specific items and locations also tethered to that card. I'll cover this very card and chapter in a future video.
GameMaster, do you think that the D&D Beyond videos on RUclips use original digital images for photos found in the books? It looks like the digital pictures are nicer than the same image contained in the book, except for the glossy cover art.
hmm.. it's possible. I mean, they are using probably a good 300 dpi .png image for what they display on their videos, and the print quality should be similar, but i don't know for sure.
It looks like there are some ultra high res prints in the books but a lot of the large and full scene prints are not the highest quality so therefore the digital image is much better and you can tell if you watch D&D Beyond videos. They use the ultra high res digital images and nobody else ever gets those. That is what it looks like.@@gamemasters
I'm curious about how you can use this in any campaign without disrupting the entire campaign. Is this something you can insert in the campaign at any moment? What can it add to a campaign in a positive way?
the easiest way to drop it into a campaign and not have it negatively impact the game would be to cherry pick the cards, there is nothing saying that you cannot have it appear as a deck of say.. only 10 cards. I'll cover this very question in a bit more detail in a future video.
From its inception in 1e, the Deck had the power to derail a campaign. That was the danger of the deck. I suspect there will be rules to lessen or modify the effects of the cards so that the results can be integrated into the events of the campaign or be a foreshadowing of coming events so that drawing a potentially devastating card won’t have a jarring effect on a campaign. There was a deck of many things in the original Ravenloft module. If a party found it, it could definitely alter the course of events
haha the deck of many things could do more than derail a campaign, it was a down and out total party annihilator! In this new book there is certainly options to lessen that possibility (the DM can customize the deck to fewer cards for example).
Other than some new official monster stat blocks. I’m not seeing much there of interest. Especially for that price. The Deck of Many Things has been around forever and there’s plenty of info available on it in previous editions and online. You can download and print your own cards. Or some third-party vendors who have prints as well. Warning for those unfamiliar with DoMT it’s not something you want use within an existing adventure/campaign. Its one the quickest to wreck a current adventure. While some might get lucky, others will get screwed over. Even to the point that might not wish to play that character anymore.
This book goes well beyond just drawing a card and seeing what boon or bane it does, I've got a chapter breakdown video coming out monday that will go over it.
@@gamemasters Agreed, your second video did highlight some other areas. There are a few things in that boxset that do stand out. Thank you for highlighting more info.

Maybe I just play Yugioh or something, but wouldn't that just make it HARDER to draw the cards you want? (Is a joke of course) In all seriousness though, definitely don't make YOUR deck too large.
