Opening the gate with a rope is a routine known as "thumb-lining". Great video, thanks.
@@Brian-1948 morning Brian. Thank you, I didn’t know there was a name for it. I was really impressed with Kevin the fuel boats skills 🥰🥰
@@ElectricNarrowboat Yes, skilled hands always show us up don't they? Also with thumblining take note of the shape of the lock gate hand rail, there is a small return at the inner end which helps the line stay in the right place. So be prepared for some slip offs on some gates.
Another useful thing is the use of the "strapping post" on a lock with single entry gate. The edge of the gate has the timber post extending above the top rail and if you are entering the lock slowly you can toss a loop of your stern rope over that post as you go past it. Applying some pressure to the rope will do two things, it will pull the gate closed behind you and also bring the boat to a stop. Take care with this one until you've got the hand of it...
@@Brian-1948 wow Brian. That is another excellent tip. Thank you. You sound like you have been boating for a while?? 🥰
@@ElectricNarrowboatWe started hiring boats back in 1984 and holidayed for about another 10 years. Thoroughly enjoyed it as well as the history. Came across our first BWB key the other week... Enjoy your as I'm sure you will.
Enjoyed the vlog again. Thank you.

@@glennsunman9859 Hello Glenn. Thank you. Glad you liked it. Welcome aboard, it’s great to have you along for the adventure 🥰🥰
Blimey, it's busy!
Would like to know how Kevin wrapped the rope. I guess the rope holds itself in place when pulled from one direction and falls off when the pressure is released as he's passing through. A lovely trick.
Kings Langley Skew Railway Bridge No 156 - the concrete bridge, was pleasing. 1950s I guess, built on the original brick pillars to carry the West Coast Main Line.
@@Daytona2 Hi Daytona. I wish I’d had time for a lesson. I’ll ask him if I bump into him again. Sounds like you know a lot about architecture. I liked it too even though it was made of concrete 🥰🥰
Cool rope trick. Did he divulge the knot? I suspect the rope falling off the gate has a lot to do with a special knot. It was almost like a magic trick with your reaction being one of almost disbelief 😂😂😂😂
@@donkeee785 hi Donkee. I’m afraid I didn’t get to see how he tied it. It I’m going to track him down and demand a lesson🤣🤣
Hi Anita, hope all is well. Great stuff as always 😊👍🥰

Absolutely enjoyable trip, thank you for the journey I really loved it, by the way did the fuel boat give you the secret of that rope trick on the lockgate?
Morning Peter. So glad you enjoyed it. I’m afraid that I couldn’t see how he tied the rope. When I bump into him again I’ll ask him to show me 🥰🥰
Such a great vlog with fab insights! Keep them coming! As a future solo cruiser, I’m rather interested in learning everything about how you manage! I do love @mothershipmarine and hope to own my own in the near future! Keep up the content: you’re doing fab!
@@asubstantiallife7557 Hi Asubstantiallife. It’s great to have you along on the adventure. If you have any questions about anything just ask and I’ll do my best to answer them. 🥰🥰
@@ElectricNarrowboat thanks so much! I do find that there’s not enough tutorials out there on narrowboat vlogs: especially for solo cruisers! I have REALLY appreciated the fact that you take the time to show HOW things are done! As a Yank who’s long term goal is to move there and live aboard (my mum is a citizen) I would just love actual lessons on everything, you know? I watch SO many narrowboat vlogs, but I’m still not totally clear on just how the locks work, what exactly the paddle’s do, etc! Keep up the fabulous content!!! 👏🙌 - Tara
@@asubstantiallife7557 Hi Tara. I’ll do my best to show you how I do a lock and how it works. Just need to find one that’s not busy so I can take the time to film it🤣🤣
