317. I bought another boat

- 'tis true but it's not a traditional steel narrowboat this time (can't afford one). Instead I've bought something very cheap and cheerful, just to bob about in at weekends and on short trips. This is the first of two videos of me bringing the video back to a mooring near my home.

NOTE! Firstly, the boat DOES have a rudder fitted to the outboard. Also, it IS a four-stroke engine. Cheers!!
Good to see you back on the waterways my friend, missed your cruising content. The medicine I need in this mad world we seem to be living in.
A boat, viewed from underneath can be looked at like an airplane viewed from the top. When you turn the rudder in a plane, it does not make the airplane change _course_ , it just changes the direction the plane is FACING (ie its heading)*. It would need a fixed vertical wing of some sort in the middle to cause the fuselage to actually move in that direction.
If you view an airplane from the SIDE, when you angle the elevator up/down it also angles the fuselage, but then the whole fuselage goes up or down because the elevator changes the angle of attack of the wing and it starts pulling you in that direction.
If you had a vertical device on the bottom of the hull, (sort of like a sailboat) then the rudder would change the angle of the boat (as it does) but the straight piece would then make the boat change actual course.
I saw this on scrapheap challenge one time where they made a submarine and it had an elevator, but no "wings" or "bow planes"; thus raising the elevator made the nose aim up and the tail go down, but there was almost no change in depth it just scooted along the bottom while aimed up. Blimps do this too, the "balloon" body acts as a lifting surface but not an efficient one, so you have to use huge elevator to get it to do anything.
Of course something sticking down would be an issue for grounding, especially with the fiberglass hull. Maybe short "skegs" on both sides?
* there's more to this, but this is the relevant part.
Great to see you back on the water 👍🏼👍🏼
Is the crabbing motion due to a short keel in relation to the length? And maybe a keel that isn't pronounced enough?
Even with the rudder on the outboard it's an entirely different kettle of fish when your steering is actually directing thrust in different directions...It's akin to driving a forklift where the rear wheels turn and the fronts are fixed. Also the short waterline length and very light weight make it a good deal more "twitchy". Basically it will take time to relearn helmsmanship as it is a different experience than a traditional narrowboat.
David is back puttering around on the canals and all is right in the world again
Looks like your motor is NOT centered on your stern... Like pushing a shopping cart with one hand, it wants to push sideways. They have mounts to center in on stern ...
Congratulations, David. It looks like you now have the best of all worlds, and it IS nice to see you at the helm again.
Many thanks! 😀
David, glad to see your back on the waterways! I look forward to your future adventures!
Watching cruising the cut helped me get through the COVID lockdowns.
Return of the best canal vlogger! No intrusive music, no long intermissions of drone footage and intelligent sparse commentary.
I agree completely. The best blog and the most peaceful. I absolutely detest a musical track unless he happens to be passing by community band in the background.
Yes, top quality always.
This is pure joy to see David. Over 116,000 views in 17 hours!! Should validate just how much you touch people's lives. Wonderful to see you back on the Canal. Wishing you and 'Twiggy' many happy hours of cruising.
Agree. It's now 175K. Which is A Lot

@@biggedybiggedybong8032 True to say, Mr Johns is trending!
Don't care if you're puttering about in a bath tub, just seeing you on the canals again is a relief in itself.
I totally and fully respect your decision to not have your own boat and all that. But boy! Does it feel good to see you running your own again 😊
Extremely happy for you David. I think I can speak for everyone, that we love to see you out on the canals. Taking us along, meeting new people, your great interviews and discovering the history of the places you explore.
So pleased to see Mr. Johns owning a boat again. And not just any boat, but clearly a boat with a mind of its own. This will be very exciting.
It has all the handling of a supermarket trolley! The slightest move is like the butterfly effect on steroids.
I think he could add some vertical fins in the back. These V-shaped front crafts with rather flat bottomed backs are not easy to hold on a straight course unless you run then in planing speed.
How AWESOME! I am ridiculously happy to see and hear you talking about being back on the water. You were a mainstay of my “RUclips therapy” during my pandemic years at home and I am delighted to see you thriving in this “post-pandemic” era. All the best to you always! A fan from New York City. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
"I'd forgotten how charming this stretch of canal was" love seeing your affection for these canals, I've definitely fallen in love with them because of you!
Yay! David's on his boat and all is right with the world finally! Well, almost, but you are certainly doing your part. So very glad to see you cruising. I have missed that.
I started watching your videos in 2019 at a time when I was working in London. To say I hated my job was an understatement, but after finding your channel, and watching your videos, it made staying in hotels 5 nights a week less frustrating. Watching this video has just brought back all those good feelings of seeing the countryside and nature when all I could see was towers. I am very much looking forward to seeing more boating trip videos. I'm a manly man, but right now I feel like a kid again at Christmas ha ha.
That is a lovely comment, thank you. Glad you enjoyed them!
I began watching during a period of serious illness in 2019, and this channel was a soothing balm. I know how you feel.
I can’t tell you how excited I was to see this vlog
God is in his heaven and David is back on the canal, what more could you wish for?
Only a visit by a heron could have improved this!
Can’t tell you how perfect a cruising vlog was.
Thanks David, you’re the best
For the heron, see Part 2!

Your channel seamlessly transitioned from you "cruising the cut" to you documenting lots of really interesting canal related topics. This is yet another chapter. Can't wait for the future. Excellent work as always.
I couldn't stop grinning watching this video; it was so nice to see you've retaken the plunge. You do the best canal videos, so I'm looking forward to your new adventures. Congratulations!

Oh how I've missed these vlogs!
Dave, how good to see you with your own boat again. Like Ratty said to Moley," There is nothing like messing around in boats."
Check bushings in the steering cable links. Then consider a blade extension on the fin of the outboard to help with tracking.
That will work and help you with the maneuverability - if you're adventurous, try enclosing the prop in a homemade housing of PVC tube, it'll give you even more direction at low speed, almost like a water jet. Congratulations on becoming a water rat again!
This outboard of unknown provenance seems to be working fine. If you ever need to replace it newer out boards have advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years. Another thought is a different prop may serve your purposes better for this kind of boating (low speed).
I was wondering about this right before David mentioned going electric. A newer engine ( do they make hybrids?) and a better prop might make steering and slow navigation easier.
a new outbord would cost more then he paid for the boat and a different prop no
Once a boatman, always a boatman! It gets in your blood and you can’t b we away from it for very long! Congratulations on your new to you boat! Enjoy it!❤
very true, i had a 43ft house boat on a regular boat hull,, and it was a semi displacement, and i could cruise at 29kns.. pretty quick for a houseboat lol. but yeah, i sold it and moved a 1000 miles inland, but i dream of going back and buying a trawler type
I love your calm British speaking. Not like those stressy tiktokers who have one minute to say everything.
I agree. Have you noticed the similarity with Hitchcock's way of speaking? Someone wise in the way of British accents could explain this.
A little late to the party here, four months along now. I’m overjoyed to see you back afloat! Twiggy is adorable by the way…. Have you considered a trolling propeller? Out here on Canada’s west coast they are common for running small outboards at low speeds.
Yes my boy David is back on the cut! Congrats on the purchase. I hope it brings you so much joy!
Awesome! Congratulations on being the new owner of Twiggy. She’s a beaut. May you have many lovely adventures.
It is definitely good to see you back on the canal. I loved the little sticker on the windscreen..."I don't need therapy.. I just need my boat"
I do love these canal cruises but to make the boat more controllable and quiter i advice a newer slightly larger 4-stroke outboard
In the word(s) of Red Dwarf’s Arnold Rimmer MARVELOUS. You can just hear HIM right?
So good to see you on the water again in a boat of your own. And what a beauty 👍🏻sort of a campervan on the water. Just 😊 great.
About the stove they aren’t that dangerous as long as you provide proper ventilation you have a hatch in the roof that should do. And if you switch them of they disconnect the gas can at least mine does. I use it in my 1975 Eriba Puck. That has a pop-up roof with ventilation. It even has its own two burner stove built in. Greetings 🫡 Peter.
They are not safe in a boat, flammable gas in an environment where it has no place to escape to. Plus I have seen plenty of videos of those stoves where the gas escapes (lit) out of the canister in-situ, causing flames to shoot out of the sides.
@@CruisingTheCut Jikes😶
David, that outboard motor is a 1990’s era Honda, probably a 9.8 hp or 15 hp. Maybe a late 1980’s. My past experience in work includes part ownership of a marina in Ontario Canada with my parts to a full career of marine parts distribution, marina parts department manager and service writer. As for the throttle issue, you may just have to replace both the throttle and shift cables and they get stiff with age. These are standard Morse or Teleflex or U-Flex control cables formerly called 33C style having 10-32 threaded ends. Congratulations on your new purchase and am looking forward to seeing more of your journeys on. Cheers.
I don't fully understand all of rjt's comment but it sounds as if he knows exactly what he is talking about and is giving good advice. I am sure that your engine should be able to run at whatever rpm you set, and not just tick over or death wish, so if going over the remote throttle and steering controls does not entirely solve the problem then perhaps the engine would benefit from the attention of a knowledgeable mechanic.
What a splendid episode, I shall refer to it as Bruising the Cut!
You will get hold of it soon enough, and I am very happy to see you out puttering on the cut again, I missed that.
Kindest Regards from your Swedish longterm viewer.

So happy for you and for us all who get cruising videos again!🎉
Well, there's a fair bit of refurbishment to come first, as you'll see from the forthcoming tour video
Oh, but love the refurb videos too! Can’t wait! 😊
@@CruisingTheCut More cruising videos and more of David's DIY?!?! Christmas has come early this year!
David, you should be very pleased with your latest boat purchase. She’s a lovely boat for a single handed boater-easy on fuel, and easy to maintain whilst providing wonderful experiences on the Cut Congratulations sir.
Absolutely lovely to have you back taking us with you around the canal network for another look at the beautiful English countryside - thank you!!
like most of your followers who have watched your adventures from the very beginning, it is awesome to see you plying the languid waterways once again in your own boat. It was great to see you make a tea in the cozy little cabin. I have enjoyed you documentary work and your van channel as well, but seeing you in you tied up to the edge of a canal, in your own craft, sipping a hot drink, is wonderful to see. epic start to a new adventure...
"Unknown provenance" is going to be running through my head all day
Well said indeed!
I think 'Unknown Provenance' would be a great name for a boat.
@@jjudy5869 I like it!
David has gone back to cruising. Nature is healing
Yay, Cruising the Cut is back on the Cut.
Here we go again! Great news!! 😀
Lovely, & quite amusing, to see David's normal, free-flowing voice-over style tempered by the fact that he's clearly bricking it!!
Absolutely thrilled to see you back on the canals once more...and once you get the hang of your new "Twiggy" I am sure the stress level will subside and the joy you have for being on the water will return. So looking forward to seeing your new adventures and hearing about the history of the canals and towns along the way. Here is to much fun ahead..and once again thrilled to see you cruising once more... 👏 Bravo from across the pond.😎🇺🇸👍
Oh the sounds... The water moving in tune with your beautiful little Boat... the sound of the crows, the rustle of the trees in the breeze... and David's dulcet tones calming the frazzled nerves of a weary viewer. Thank you.🙏🏼⚓️🛟🛥💛
It's good to see ya back on the water in your own boat...
HE'S BACK! Glad to see you floating about again!
The narrative, the views, just the travelling with you - I love it all!
Hi David,
You have just made my day, no week, no month, actually year… I am so happy to see you back on the canal. Can’t wait to see your future adventures.
What a treat to watch this on a cold, rainy November day just outside Chicago. Thank you for the pretty cruise and your usual professional camera work and narration. May you and Twiggy have many a pleasant adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good to see you back on the water again!
You have no idea how much joy the decision you made is bringing! It’s so calming, relaxing and pleasantly joyful to watch you cruise through the canal! Already can’t wait for the next video❤❤
Fascinating commentary. Thank you for that. Looking forward to the tour and more info about your new vessel. Hopefully those more experienced may be able to advise about the crabbing and throttle response. Maybe a modification to the throttle linkage may make it more progressive. Already looking forward to your next video on Twiggy (though I do think "yellow peril" would be a better name.)
Thank you. Yes, I'm wondering if there's some kind of gearing I could apply to the throttle cable
It’s good to see you back on the water in your own boat! 👌🏻
I know , the other boat you had , the prop was fixed , with the rudder behind the prop . I'm assuming the motor turns like a normal out board. That has your timming off.
Glad you are back!
Welcome to the tuperware and egg whisk club, I love my 30ft centre cockpit dawncraft and you are right crusiers are way way cheaper then narrowboats!
I am now the proud owner of a Yoghurt Pot!
I would have thought that after steering a long narrowboat this small cruiser would be a breeze but it's interesting to see the different challenges of cruiser life! All the best for future travels ❤
I've had a 53 ft narrowboat and a 30 ft. The longer one was much easier, the shorter one twitchy.
Steering a rudder with a tiller reacts completely different than steering an outboard with a wheel. Especially a little cruiser the size and weight of a dinghy without a keel. That little boat is moving in the directory the force of the outboard is pointing and without a keel that can be sideways.
btw, no drive results in no steering.
Don't mention 'breeze', we don't want any of those in a fiberglass boat. Well, not strong ones anyway. I wonder if that was the 3rd thing David learnt about fiberglass boats but couldn't remember 🤔😁
I’ve just changed from a larger NB to a 23’ Wilderness Beavour which is fibreglass. . 😮I found the NB so much easier to control and I’m still adjusting. My dog Molly also loved the NB but just wants to jump off my new boat. All v. challenging!!
@@wennawoods5189Interesting. I'm thinking of doing the same. Selling my 50' for a wilderness in the spring. I have 4 dogs!
Congratulations David! It is wonderful to have a boat on the canal again. this is a beautiful canal. Outboards do differ from rudder steering. but, fiberglass is tough, so don't worry. The episode was absolute fun! I especially love the window sticker, ' I don't need therapy, I just need my boat." Butane is a wonderful stove for a boat. I look so forward to the next installment.
Wee!!! Just in time !!! I love it. Might I suggest a "trolling motor" They seem to be inexpensive this side of the pond. It might be what you want for puttering around the canals, save the out board for the rivers.
O so pleased you are back on a boat x
Congrats on being back on the water. Such vicarious pleasure watching your videos. The lush greenness is so calming. Thank you.
It's great to see you back on the water again. I believe they call it boat fever. Once you are on the water, you can't give it up.😅
Driving an outboard is an art just like a narrow boat. You'll get the hang of it. I used to have a small runabout here in the US. I used it for water-skiing and day cruising in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta for many years. Good luck with the new cruiser. 😺
Cant wait for the next episode of tacking the cut.
I’m just not sure why you would have not kept your longboat…..it was so incredible.
I explained why in a video two years ago
☺️ wonderful to see you back on the water in your own boat. It honestly feels like a part of England has snapped back into its proper place. I'm genuinely happy for you, being able to get out there and enjoy the canals again as master of your own watercraft! 🍻 Cheers!!
Fantastic news!!!!!! Reminds me of your Tangerine Dream vlog. So VERY happy for you!!! Can’t wait to see what you get up to with this little beauty!!
That was the inspiration!
Then perhaps a rename it’s in order? “Limoncello” perhaps?
How delightful to see you pootling around on the water in your own right as it were. I'm confident that perseverance will result in absolute confidence and mastery of your new acquisition 😊
How lovely to see David 'CruisingTheCut' cruising the cut again. I didn't realise how much I'd missed those videos until I watched this one. Just (well, almost) like old times! Thank you!
Hi David. At least you won't need a winding hole to turn the boat round.
Lovely to see you back on the water (though I'm also an avid viewer of Vandemonium) . I miss boating so much, so this is living vicariously
Congratulations on the new boat! Having owned fiberglass and aluminum outboard boats here in the USA I would have you check the steering linkage. It might be loose and that would allow the motor to move on its own throwing you off course.
Also have the steering cable checked, it seems to have a great deal of lost motion. Perhaps other cruisers could offer further insight to this issue. Cheers!
That sounds likely. Add in the "short coupled" nature of a tiny boat, and the vastly reduced weight would definitely mean a new feeling in the steering.
What a cute little boat! Electrifying it would definitely be cool, especially since you could run the induction stove off of the same batteries!
Good to see you are boating again
Looks like a Fantasy 20 by Small craft. Either your steering cables are loose or if it is rod steering that needs lube. there used to be a small bolt on rudder that attaches to the outboard for improved low speed steering. Going from a rudder to no rudder takes a while.
Lovely to see you back on the canals. 2024 is the start of our savings journey to buy a narrow boat.
So happy to see you’re back on the water with your own boat again! Nothings worse then being land locked when you’re a water baby!!!
Fantastic to see you back at the helm of your own craft. She looks to be in remarkable condition. I guess we cannot use the phrase yoghurt pot any more!
It’s not so good close-up, unfortunately!!
@@CruisingTheCut I think Steve is getting a narrowboat isn't he? Think he enjoyed messing about with that one...a lot of the lads in the marina gave him advice....I told him to get a coursekeeper on the engine, same as mine, as he'd been banging the boat from side to side on the canal! Think it was too light for him. Ed.
You look good in Yr.new baby David....
Love to see you on canal again
CruisingTheCut cruising vlogs give me a warm, happy feeling.
We were bloody excited to see you in your boat. We guessed you missed the fun of life afloat, and are so glad to see you have got back on the water. Maybe in a year there might be a vlog about pros and cons of GRP cruisers vs steel narrow boats in budgetary terms. Meanwhile - proper happy for you, and looking forward to the three hour, full on, 4D tour of Twiggy, including the cheese locker and the carronades.
What a pleasure it is to see you out on the water again in your own boat David. I’d forgotten how much I used to enjoy your cruising vlogs.
Just watched your Twiggy video. Here's a couple of suggestions: check the steering for excessive play. Usually something is loose at or near the motor. The engine could be a Honda. You could get a propeller with less pitch, which might give you better low speed control by slightly raising the RPMs. We've followed you for years, and are happy to see you back on the water!
One thing I forgot to mention: check to make sure that the propeller extends down past the bottom of the boat. You might need a long-shaft outboard. If the propeller does not extend past the bottom, the boat won't steer very well at all.
Another thing to consider, is if it has a rudder blade attached to the outboard, which many canal boats do have, then the rudder could either be too big or too small. Experimentation with different sized rudder blades may well be needed. The advice about the prop pitch being too aggressive is also good.👍 I have driven many GRP boats with outboards and they should track straight and steer reliably, except maybe in a cross-wind.
What lovely comments on here. Lovely video. We love a cruiser, cheap and cheerful adventures. All the best!
Thanks so much! 😊
For manoeuvrability, change the prop to 4 blade.. run some wood along it’s keel to add stability.. it’s not deep enough in the water for stability.. it’s meant to travel on lakes.. at speed..
Fiberglass is actually a really good material for boats...able to absorb moderate impact with minimal damage in my experience.
You should have a LOT of fun personalizing "Twiggy"...
Enjoy the new adventure M8 :))
Wonderful, this has made me very happy to see you back on your own boat. Glad to see you got a cup of tea, was waiting for the cheese sandwich. Can't wait for more videos.
Congrats David! What a nice surprise!
That was Steve's boat next to mine by the bridge at Ashwood!
At 19:27 the colour of the 'water' coming out of that kettle is either cause for alarm or take two on the making a cuppa scene!
I made the tea in the kettle
@@CruisingTheCut Not an option I had considered😅.
I cannot believe that you bought another boat (but I am so glad you did). Love seeing you back filming on the water.
Congrats David! She’s a real beauty, very charming little cruiser! I can’t wait for the tour and to see the outcome of any remodeling!
Woohoo, the legend is back on the water! As a very long time viewer I look forward with much anticipation to new adventures on the cut and seeing boat maintenance and upgrades. Is your trim set correctly on that outboard, that can impact your steering ability. Cheers 🍻
What a thrill. Your new boat and trip trip reminds me of an adventure with the sadly late Phil Furlong who I met at Red Bull on the Trent and Mersey when out for a walk on the 23rd of December a few years ago (while visiting family), and a casual chat and glass of wine turned into a crazy winter adventure to help an aged musician finish his London to Liverpool jaunt - on the very fibreglass Dawn Chorus. Boy did we get blown around - and fibreglass can crack - so be careful, but how much fun on the cut again after a long absence. Phil tragically met his end returning after a trip on the Mersey, falling into the lock - as he lived his life - very rock and roll. Greatly missed.
Looks like the steering has a mind of it's own ! Nice looking boat though.
Fantastic you’re back on the canal, great boat David, I love watching you videos they are relaxing to me. This is Gary from America saying have a great day and be safe👍
Thanks 👍
Mooring the cut back in motion, good to see you back on the water. Feels like we all just naught a bright yellow boat and are along for the journey.
Congratulations! So happy to see you back on a boat. It goes without saying, but don't be discouraged with your boat handling skills, you doing remarkable well and its still very new to you. You spent many years handling a very heavy narrowboat and did very well there, this new boat is a very different beast altogether. You will get the hang of it in no time. Makes me happy to see you on the water again, and I, and pretty sure many people here, look forward to your little adventures on Twiggy. Cheers, T
