It's not only about social status IMO. Few points missed -
1. Ground clearance - compact SUVs are more practical in Indian conditions with unscientific speed breakers and potholes. May be this may change in few years, now it's not good enough.
2. Ingress/egress - higher seating is more elderly friendly - my father prefers Brezza over Verna due to this even though the later is more premium.
Compact SUVs are very comfortable for people above 5.5 height.
It's good for elders with more height. In sedans case I can sit my dad. In suv case my dad has to climb up.
I have only owned sedans and hatchbacks since I started driving 16 years back, and till now I have never faced many issues with Ground Clearance. You need to be careful for sure, but when you consider the driving dynamics and comfort a Sedan gives, i really don't think slowing down at a speed breaker or a bad patch of road is a big deal. I would definitely agree on the second point, for elderly people ingress and egress on a sedan or hatchback is difficult.

Yes, the Seltos has more features, but it doesn't stand a chance against Volkswagon/Skoda cousins in terms of Driving Dynamics, handling, stability, comfort, build quality, safety, etc... these are pure driver's cars. If you prefer more features, definitely it is Seltos; it's pure personal choice, which is why you see a lot of Korean cousins being sold in India.

Usage depends on the context.

As a person who loves proper SUVs like the LC, defender, Wrangler, XJs even endeavour and fortuner.
These new so called SUVs are a disgrace.
What you said is true, if the road and driving culture is good. A sedan offers comfort in Kerala roads and I felt it also offers some protection from lorry/ bus.

Hatch back(hatchback sedan) is a subdivision of sedan. The car we call sedan is a notchback sedan. FYI. But now a days nomenclature is just a joke.

Hatchback, notchback and fastbacks come under the sedan. If we consider the nomenclature criteria strictly innova will come under hatchback that's why called it's a joke nowadays.
And some categories such as opera coupes are not even produced now.
Adding one more point. As per the nomenclature an suv must have a 4x4(not all wheel drive) variant in its linup.

I tried many vehicles , hi iam In a western country for long years , i can say with confidence best handling especially in highways around 130 km and above speeds (youngsters listen only in highways) the only vehicles gives flawless handling is top brand heavy (weight is important for stability) sedan cars but small less weight sedan cannot give this (eg camery , Honda accord , Volkswagen middle range etc), plus comfort , in SUV you cannot dream this type of handling , but SUV has its own purpose and defenitly it is not for long trip highway driving , please youngsters give back end and front end vehicles enough space and allways defensive driving only, especially in highway speeds , carefull dont love driving too much it can get into your bones .God bless
