Mark , thank you for this video. I have been shooting Sony for 3 1/2yrs now and you are the first person to give a clear, practical and concise explanation of each of the AF settings. I have been frustrated with the erratic behavior of Sony continuous AF and the amount of times critical focus is not achieved. I was sure it was operator error and not the camera but I couldn’t find a clear guide on how to identify and correct my mistakes. I’m sure I will have to go over your video a number of times but I’m very much looking forward to shooting with this new knowledge. One piece of constructive feedback I would like to share is that it seems common place that tutorials are based around well lit scenarios. I as do many, shoot a lot in low light and as such, I would like some tips on focusing and DOF I’m very low light situations.
Everybody has too short of an attention span today and there are so many 5 minute tutorials. THIS video however is so detailed it's amazing. Can't believe it's free

SUPERB Master Class Mark. Some teachers/clases this in depth and this much info would cost hundreds of $$. You are a true guver to provide this for free to the photo community. So much good info that even seasoned Sony shooters dont know all the nuances about the camera. This video link (and all your classes) should be a permanent link in the hard copy manual Sony provides as well as on their website for best series on how to properly use their camera. im sure the Sony help line would have much less emails and calls if they did. You;re one of the best and one of my favorite photo teachers. Great images to go along with great info. Keep up the great work Mark!!! and Thank you again for all you do
As an academic (non-photography) I appreciate the information you provide here to take better pictures using the sophisticated Sony operating system; one of the reasons I bought an Alpha 7 iii and RX100. I'm still in the transition phase like many others from Canon to Sony and appreciate the advice you provide so I am more proficient when I am confronted with switching between stills and movies, sport and landscape modes. I really like the customisation that is part of the mirrorless systems as it can be over-powering when you are working to the best of photographic opportunities.
Thank you so much! Not only was it clear and concise but the presentation examples themselves were great to look at and helped explain more than what the words could do...
Thank you for all your tutorials. For may years I used a Nikon and recently changed to Sony A7ii. I struggle with exposure between my dark skin subject and very light background and also the colour technology is a little too rich for me. I found so many things helpful especially navigating my shortcuts. So keep going and thank u
Really great video Mark, learned a lot more in this hour and a half than reading and rereading the manuals. It’s not only the visual examples, but the practical mindset of the photographer.
I’m new to Sony with the A6500 and I was completely lost with all the focus settings until now. Thank you so much for your excellent instruction Mark. I look forward to putting your techniques to use.
Absolutely so well done. I am going to donate. You are gold. I hope others will cherish your charity as much as I and others have. Merry Christmas Mark!
G'day Mark.. It's been a while since I've watched your tutorials but when I do click on one it puts me on a real high. Your'e so bloody casual and straight forward that it's very easy to listen and listen again to your advice... I have been told that you are not doing any more tutorials and that's a pain in the butt because we rely on you so much... Good to see you on here as usual... Thanks for just being you, and doing what you do well.. Nifty....
I have only taken a short break from tutorials as I am on an extended one-month shoot in Japan. I plan to make more in June, July and August before I head off to the USA to shoot again.
Thanks Mark.. Great to hear you are doing a shoot in Japan.. I 've had friends on holidays there recently, unfortunately they aren't photographers..Japan certainly has a great deal of sites that you will be able to show your skill and have a great time.. Thank you Mark. I just got a Sony 7aiii last month and needed to learn more on focusing especially for wildlife. I truly appreciate your time to clearly explain the menus and the various settings needed to get that crisp focus for action. Have this video ear marked as I continue on my Sony journey.
Mark, another outstanding video! I have been using Sony Alpha series including now full frame since 2014. You not only covered the basics for those coming into the Sony Alpha series, but also shared several things I was not aware of as well as topics I had questions about. Thank you for these excellent product videos.
Thanks a million for your time explaining us all these great advices. As Black Bird said, having this as free tutorial is something to be grateful for. Great job.
New fanatic fan! You are one awesome individual sir. A true masterclass better than just (another) technical specifics of a particular camera brand and marketing talk. Great overall photography techniques refresher.
You are such a great teacher. I got my A7Riii this weekend, although I really wanted the A7R4, and have learned how to use my camera through your videos. Thank you!
You are a wonderful teacher. I live in Banff in the Rocky mountains. One huge issue I have is Sony auto focus being obsessed with spruce and other coniferous trees. Today I was trying to shoot an ospray in flight with tracking focus from a small spot. There was a mountain covered with spruce trees behind it. Even though it was halfway between me and the mountain. There was no way to get the camera to come back and focus on the bird. If it so it appeared over the mountain thr focus worked great. I've had a lot of cases in bird photography where the camera chooses to focus on conifers behind the bird. It's the same with my a6400, a7iii and whichever lens I use. Maybe since you wear the brand you could pass this to R&D. I'm sure pine tree photographers think Sony auto focus is the best technology ever but it's the only point of frustration for me.
Small spots are my last go-to AF area that I would want to choose, but have to be used when there are foreground obstacles. AF tracking technologies massively improved in 2019 - especially on the full frame cameras such as the A9, A9II and A7RIV. I could pretty much guarantee these cameras would show no love for the pine trees in the background so for Sony engineers it is probably job accomplished.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills good, I noticed the tracking is quite a bit better on the a6400 than the a7iii it's the one I use for wildlife. I sure appreciate your quick responses even to an older video. The real problem was that once it focused on the mountain behind if I would try to get the bird it would not hunt. It probably checked if there was something already in focus.... Do you know what a really cool video would be is an interview with Sony engineers. Maybe they have too many secrets to be interviewed but I would love to know more about how the software works.
It would be great to get the engineers on camera but it took me a year to organise my only meeting with them and they don’t speak good English. I have a very good understanding of how to achieve a 95% success rate with the A9 cameras and the few times I do miss I now put down to my ageing response times to sudden changes in subject behaviour.
Great info! Iearned so much! thank you for the tips--I was using small flex spot focus all the time prior to this tutorial and it certainly wasted time compared to wide mode! Also appreciated the tip about registering custom shoot setting for fast action (high speed drive, SS 1/2000, auto ISO, f5.6,) all at the simple press of a button. Game changer!!!
Hi Mark. I've come back to this video several times in the course of at least 1 year. I shoot a lot of weddings and the dancing part is the one that I always struggle to find something that works for me. Its very dynamic and crowded with a lot of people. I still dont have a setup to go with it.
At an indoor event with low ambient light you would struggle to freeze the dancers without using very High ISO settings. The short duration of Flash will freeze your subjects but also remove the atmospheric ambient lighting. I am happy to continue this dialog over on my Patreon support group Patreon.com/markgaler
I never leave comments, but I am compelled by the quality of this information here to say: THANK YOU- AMAZING! I am inspired to shoot better and use my tools with more wisdom thanks to your insights. - Liked and subscribed!
Thanx Mark! you are a fantasticj and educated teacher and a very good photoghraper.its a joy to see this video, im going from Nikon and Leica just now and learning Sony, very well done Mark!
Mark you do a wonderful job a explaining the many fuctions of the Sony cameras. I will certainly watch this video a number of times to learn all of the inforamation you provided.
This was an awesome video. I have been using the alpha 7riii for a long time and I learned a lot from your video. I have already changed my settings and I can't wait to try them out tomorrow. Thank you.
You are the man that helped and enabled me to make best use of my 100-400mm Sony lens to shoot birds near my home. I can't wait to dig into this video. Thank you so much, Mark!
Absolutely stunning photos Mark! This is one of the most detailed and informative videos I have ever watched. I found your videos when I was searching for information on the Sony a7 II for my wife. I am a longtime Canon shooter and was fascinated from start to finish. If the rest of your videos are like this one then you can be sure that I'm looking forward to those too. Congratulations Mark, I'm a fan!
Thanks Alex - I have a lot of lecture length video tutorial on my channel. Some ask 'why so long' and I just tell them I was a senior lecturer in photography for 14 years.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills That was pretty obvious Mark. My wife taught for 30 years and taught Photoshop among computer graphics. I'm a product designer and teacher. I taught design and graphics for 27 years. Both retired now but keen photographers. I sent links from your Flickr site to a bunch of my mates. You have incredible skills and your images are on a whole other level. We are dog lovers as well and your dogs shots are just fabulous. I'm wowed by your skills and not surprised that you are a Sony Ambassador.
My favourite movie is 'The Godfather II', and to be honest, it still is, but your movie here is a very close second! I've just come to the Sony A7RV (three days ago) from a Nikon D810 & D750, and I was finding the Sony autofocus, and its myriad of options and settings, SO confusing. I mean it still is, but that's only because I need to now start using it and experimenting, but now I'm armed with all the extensive information you've so excellently presented & provided here, and your wonderfully informative video has cleared away one hell of a lot of the confusion, so ... THANK YOU Mark!
Thanks for this positive feedback. As you can appreciate a lot of effort goes into creating these presentations. I spent 14 years as a senior lecturer at a prestigious University teaching commercial photography, so creating one and two hour lectures was my passion. There are no contracts or commitments in signing up so all the resources can be downloaded for one US $10 payment.
I have been looking for this since I got my a6500 a few days ago. The content was incredible and I shall be watching this a few times until I have mastered my camera. Thank you and subbed.
Another excellent video Mark - thank you for a thorough presentation, well-produced and intelligently presented. I used your videos to set up my A7RIII - couldn’t have done it without your information.

The short duration of Flash will freeze your subjects but also remove the atmospheric ambient lighting. I am happy to continue this dialog over on my Patreon support group Patreon.com/markgaler
Looking at your photos, they are awesome. Especially those close up detailed zooms. Makes me see things I normally cannot. ❤
Thank you so much!
Many thanks for spreading knowledge and your experience to all the people

Great lecture for all photographers!

You're an invaluable wealth of information....I appreciate you Mark
I watched this series when i first bought my a7iii last year. There is so much good info in here, coming back a year later and still learning lots!
Fantastic informational video! Well worth the watch. Thank you so much!
Great video! Thank you and I will share this to other Alpha users very helpful.
This answered a host of questions that I had. Very well done!
I now make extended photographic seminars available on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel. You can also download a 600-page eBook for your A7RV. There are no contracts or commitments in signing up so all the resources can be downloaded for one US $10 payment.
I have been looking for this since I got my a6500 a few days ago. The content was incredible and I shall be watching this a few times until I have mastered my camera. Thank you and subbed.
My Focus Area video also revisits some of the content and adds some more info about when changing AF area will help.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I will check that out now, thanks.
Thank you so much! I'm still a begginer and your videos are so helpful 🙏
