I am a health care professional and have never jumped on the tight lining bandwagon. I wear contact lenses and am very careful about anything that gets in/close to my eyes,, including metallic eyeshadows. I am not sure whom ever thought tight lining was acceptable but clearly never talked with a health care professional about it.

Finally, someone addressing this. Any Optometrist/Opthamologist will tell you not to tight line (and especially bad if it has micro shimmer/glitter in it). Interestingly, many of the Mothership palettes irritate my eyes and had to return.

I was told years ago: No waterlining, tightlining or artificial eyelashes or extensions. No waterproof eyeliners or mascaras. No growth serums, no frosty smudge on or around the tear ducts, and no regular use of eyedrops. Drops are ok only for short-term use, during allergy flareups. This is my reality with rosacea with ocular affect. I listen!

Yes. I learned all this the hard way. I tightlined my eyes on my top lids, and my eyes got messed up. They were dry and irritated! I stopped that. Then, I watched a video about makeup and sensitive eyes, and someone in the comment section mentioned that waterproof mascara can cause irritated eyes, and I realized that that was my problem with getting irritation in my eyes. Now, I mainly use regular 😢 I only wear eye makeup a few times a week at the most after my 2nd eye infection a few months apart from each other. I also don't use eyelash serums either. That was causing problems too! Also, I only wear contact lenses a few times a week because during the lockdown in 2020-2021, I wore them every day, and my eyes got so dry 😢.

I see so many people coming in to the practice I work at with horrific eye infections due to cosmetics. Not only from inner lash lining, but using high sparkle shadows. Those types are constantly flaking, even when using a primer and they make micro scratches on the cornea. After awhile all those minute scratches can lead to very serious infections. Its even worse for contact wearers since they don't realize that the scratching is happening under their contacts.

I've had viewers comment saying that I should tightline with my eyeliner. I've only tried it twice, and both times my eyes watered for hours until the makeup wore off. If I don't tightline, yeah - we can all see my white skin, but the makeup stays in place all day when my eyes aren't watering. And I'm 64 now, so that has been good enough for me. Thank you for bringing this up! 😊

I simply cannot 'tight line' my eyes. I was diagnosed w a rare eye cancer in 2006 and ever since, I have extremely sensitive eyes. I also have persistent blepharitis (dry eye) which affects the tiny oil glands inside the eyelids. I can't even stand to use mascara any more. So I am so happy you're doing this PSA to warn people of the hazards of this practice.
BTW, I got my stock notification from Doll 10 yesterday that your Little Pink Box was available and promptly ordered it. Can't wait! Thank you.

  • @divakingsley9020

Yes your eye doctor is correct. The waterline needs to breathe so anything that obstructs it can have serious side effects.
Also I’m not usually a fan of Pinks/Red tones for eyeshadow, because it seems like someone has an infection, allergic/itchy reaction.., but your pink makeup looks just right.
    Thanks for posting.

Thank you for sharing this information! At 61 years old, I have only recently started to use eye pencil on my bottom waterline. I like the effect it has in make up tutorials and have been experimenting with this look. I instinctually thought that it wouldn’t be good for the eye, but since so many do it, I pushed my instinct aside. I am really glad I saw this video, your tips are very helpful, and I will no longer be coloring my lower waterline or my upper one for that matter. It’s just not worth the risk. Thanks again!

I have dry eyes. My ophthalmologist told me the same thing. The myobian glands are in the top and bottom waterlines. The liner clogs the glands and the natural oil that lubricates your eyes won’t drain. It’s really uncomfortable having dry eyes. I had to stop tightlining my hooded eyes. Thanks for the next best way to make your lashes look fuller.

I’m glad that you are bringing awareness to tightlining your waterline! This is something we used to do in the 80s and by the 90s it was already recommended by eye doctors not to use eyeliner on that area of your eye. It’s funny how things that were popular come back around, good and bad! I haven’t done this since the 90s and when I see “influencers” and makeup artists doing this all I think about is how many people are getting eye infections from this?!?! Carry on with spreading the knowledge Sharalee! ❤

Hey Sharalee! I learned this technique from a Wayne Goss video a couple of years ago and have been doing my eyes this way ever since. He called it the push-line technique. You are literally pushing the eyeliner or eyeshadow into the base of your lashes. There’s some out there that are die-hard waterline gals and they’re probably not going to change. I do hope your audience implements this technique and I appreciate you for bringing awareness to us about eye health & safety. God bless you sweet friend!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this information! I had wondered about this and actually researched it two or three times. Everything I could find said it was OK as long as you don’t do it every day. I’m glad to finally know the truth! I think there’s a reason why it’s hard to find eyeliners that will actually work on the waterline. They’re not supposed to! This will save me a lot of money in having to buy particular products just for that purpose.

Thank you for posting this! This is a great alternative. I have black eyebrows/lashes and never feel the need to line my rims. It seems to me that unless you have very large eyes, this technique only makes your eyes look smaller. Similar to lining the full lid can also make your eyes look smaller instead of lining the outer 2/3rd.

Thank you so much for asking your eye doctor and for doing this video!
I never liked anything in my waterlines, my eyes didn’t like it if I had sth there, and apart from very few times I did do it, I decided I wasn’t going to do it ever again. Never understood why so many people live to do it, because that’s basically introducing foreign matter into your eyes where it wasn’t meant to be and it seems like a fast track to eye allergy, sensitivity and/or injury.
I have enough trouble taking of all of mascara, let alone any random glitter etc that falls into my eye without me intending to.

I have very hooded eyes-have had them my whole life. Tightlining and waterlining actually makes my eyes water-no matter what brand of pencil I use, or who makes it. It has always just made a mess for me. The best thing I ever did was chuck a liner pencil over my shoulder in frustration (couldn’t get the look I wanted.) It happened to bounce into the trash can and I left it there. Glad I did now!

I stay off the waterline and more into the lash roots on top and bottom. And I try to avoid flaking mascara. My contacts do not wear well with mascara bits under them🤦🏼‍♀️ Also be careful with hairspray and keeping eyes closed long enough for the mist to settle. Contacts don’t wear well with hairspray on them🥴 This was a very good informative video. Thank you! OH! And I ordered my Little Pink Box from Doll10 this evening 🙌🏻☺️ HugZ, dear!💕☺️🌺💄

I agree! No tightlining or water line lining. Not good. Yes, the prospect of "doll eyes" is enticing, but at what price? If any of you have ever suffered through eye infections or styes, you know how miserable they are-- real "wet blankets" on your tightlining fires. I just use shadow as a liner at the roots/ base of my lashes with washable mascara.

My doctor told me years ago to avoid the waterline. And anyone who has had cataract surgery will usually have drier eyes afterward if they were “tweaked” with lasik.

Slightly different subject but I am someone who has a difficult time keeping a curl in my lashes, no matter how long I hold the lash curler in place. I have recently started seeing a heated lash curler claiming to keep lashes curled. Do you have thoughts or have you tried these “miracle” curlers? As always, your video was interesting and entertaining!

Like you I always wore hard or rgp contacts. I never tight lined because it always wound up on the lenses. If it was on my lens then it was in my eye.

Thank you for sharing that information. I just want to say, I think the eye shadow color you are wearing today looks really good on you… matches your shirt, it’s very pretty.

Thank you for this important video. I used to use a make up pencil on my water line and....6 years ago when I was in Switzerland my eyes started watering like crazy. When i got home went to my eye doctor and was sent to another eye specialist as i had a nasty blocked tear duct that required surgery! NO fun as they cleaned and placed little tubes in there for weeks and then removed them. Had special eye drops etc. please learn from me and never put anything on your waterline or inside corner of the eye. This was a very challenging and expensive go around as well 😞

In the 80’s I used Madeleine Mono kohl kajal to line my waterline. It looked beautiful and I received many compliments.
I also never had any allergy or medical problem but I stopped when I used to wear soft contact lenses.
Now I only line my waterline for special occasions, if that.
I find on me tight lining is a nothing burger.

I had wondered at this advice. It so irritated my eyes but I can’t think of anyone that dissent recommend waterlining.

As a product of the 60’s we lined both the upper and lower water lines with black eyeliner. And put it on nice and thick. Then topped with blue eyeshadow and globs of black mascara. So hot

Also, several times a week, dip or spray eye pencils with alcohol to disinfect. Also, date make up, eye products when they are purchased that you may know when to discard and replace. Great information.

My eye doctor told me the same thing! She actually used special tweezers and removed tiny pieces that were imbedded in my lash line. I clean my lashes and lids twice a day since I too wear contacts and need to be careful. Never dreamed I had a buildup. Thanks for this video.
