  • Diving head-first into her first outdoor short course triathlon, Lucy goes up against some of the best in the world of WTCS! The race in Leeds was certainly exciting, and a massive learning curve, but to still come out in 5th was an excellent result!
The swim bike and run may have been shorter than normal - but the challenge was just as big as what she's used to in the ironman! And the third discipline of transition, with mount and dismount, far more important!
Lucy talks through her thoughts pre and post race - what went well and what could be improved. Will more short course racing be on the cards in the future?
Remember to enter the giveaway in the comments section by answering Lucy's question:
Did my performance surprise you in the short course, if so, what surprised you about it? Or were you not even surprised at all?
Make sure to let us know what you think and we will pick somebody to win Lucy's signed transition number from Leeds!

you’re such an inspiration for me lucy! i’m thirteen, but i’m trying to sign up for my first triathlon (sprint distance) right now! also, i think it’d be really cool if you went on the convos over cold brew podcast. lots of big names from the running/athletic world have been on it, and it’d be a super cool way to learn more about you. you should def reach out to emma abrahamson about it!

The biggest surprise was how much you inspired my 11 year old daughter pre, during and post race. She’d travelled 260miles with me to watch me race in the British standard champs, and we hung on to see the elite ladies race before the long journey travelling back south. Since Sunday, she’s become LCB obsessed and the determination in her tri training this week has defo ramped up! Thanks for inspiring her with motivation and confidence - it seems you have more than an affect than me!

You're an inspiration to me, too, Lucy, and I'm 61. I was not surprised, because I've seen you accomplish amazing things earlier this year in SuperLeague and the UK Olympic swim trials. Your hard work, focus, determination, honing in on the particular things you need to practice for the race at hand, the support of Reece and Lola, your positive, yet realistic attitude - all these factors are the reasons I was not surprised by your brilliant performance. Thank you!

Overall I was not surprised....but one thing that stood out to me (I was a competitive cyclist) was your strength on the bike given how many times you let a gap open to the rider in front of you. I kept saying to myself holy smokes what a freaking beast you are! You were basically riding a criterium and without the experience of the other athletes you blew my mind. So many times I thought, oops, big gap that may be it for Lucy Charles, but you proved me wrong. I can not express how impressed I was with your pure brute strength on the bike! Congratulations on a well earned 5th place!! So glad I watched the race!

Lucy - just because you didn't podium doesn't mean you didn't succeed. From day one, you've always managed to turn heads, exceed expectations, and just do the best you can..which usually results in a great performance. A podium does not determine an athlete's level of success. You're still young and learning. Short course, just like long course, comes with practice. You'll get there. I look forward to seeing how this short course benefits your Kona performance!

Lucy's race was both surprising and unsurprising for me! I tuned into the race from Australia as I wanted to catch the action live! From watching Lucy compete in Kona, I knew she would come out in the front pack in the swim. I knew that if she could just hold that couple of seconds lead into transition that she could catch a pack and really be in the race! I was surprised at how well she handled the technical course, and loved seeing her take a turn on the front, especially up that hill! Her tenacity to hold onto that 2nd chase pack was amazing to watch. The most surprising aspect of her race was the run. I was unsure how she would stack up against the other girls for the 10km. But safe to say, Lucy absolutely killed it. I was hanging onto the edge of my seat for the whole run leg, and seeing her pluck off Spivey was just the icing on top of the cake. After seeing Lucy compete so successfully in Kona, the Olympic Trials and now WTCS Short Course I am sure she will keep surprising us in future with how much she achieves during her career as a Triathlete. I would be honoured to win her signed transition number, it would remind me everyday to always strive to try new things without the fear of failure. I will be competing in my first Full Ironman race in September and I have taken a massive inspiration from Lucy. I couldn't be happier for her and what she has achieved.

Not surprised at all! Despite only 11 days prep for that specific distance, if you felt you didn’t have it in you, you would’ve never gone for it. To say yes, means you were there to win! Could the prep be better? Hell yeah! If they give you some more lead time 🤣 A surprising performance? Hell no! Outstanding race Lucy, you’re an inspiration!

It didn’t surprise us Lucy. We knew from the ArenaGames that you were going to smash this! 👍🏻
As a family we watched & cheered you on - my 8 year old daughter Florence is a massive fan & you are her inspiration & she just kept saying ‘She’s got this!’ 😄
Once the race was finished & we had seen your interview she wanted to go for a bike or run - she was fired up from your performance! 💪🏻
It was an amazing effort & I don’t think people still realise how big a change you made from LongCourse to ShortCourse for the race. I think you’ll fulfil your ‘Olympic Dream’.
The beautiful thing about it all though is your inspiring the next generation too Lucy. So thank you & keep doing what you do best! 🏊🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️

I was absolutely not suprised by the performance you gave, Lucy. After the arena games and the swim tryouts you've proved that you can turn you hand to whatever you set your sites on and kick ass along the way. It's just proving that the old points of view don't count and you can go long, short, whatever you want if you're willing to put in the hard work and dedication. Keep inspiring!

I was and wasn’t surprised, I knew that if you were in a good day you would be leading the swimming and doing a great job in the bike and in the run. At the same time, meeting expectations with such greatness and excellence with few days of Prep only, did surprise and shocked the world. You demolished the field in the swim part and everyone is so excited to see what a well prepared Lucy Charles would be able to do and we are all wishing to see you in 2024 Olympics. most importantly, you were able to inspire everyone on point and remember everyone that we can do whatever we want with hard work.

As a triathlete and former competitive swimmer as well, it’s really surprising (and so amazing actually) how you’ve been able to pivot and do great as a triathlete in different distances! Triathlon is so technical and the distances are brutal themselves. I’m not surprised but I’m sure other ITU triathletes and coaches were surprised by your performance here!!! Your drive, discipline and athleticism as a whole is A-mazing!!! 🙏🏻 I’m even more motivated now to qualify for world championship and see you and race the same course with you. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Lucy!! Let’s go surprise ourselves with more amazing things we can actually do!! 🙌

I wasn’t surprised to be honest Lucy. Having watched you race for years now I know you’re a very capable athlete. This weekend proved not only that you’re not far off the top of elite standard at this distance but I feel it was a real warning to the short course world that you are a podium threat to anyone on any Olympic course. I do however have feeling that your success in ITU will be determined by your ability to win at Sprint, it’s a given to me that you’ll win at Olympic distance, should you decide to peruse that route. Go for it I say, I’d love to see you blow up the ITU world.

I have to agree with this. I think after she wins Kona this year, she should get into short course. I’m pretty sure she will dominate for years to come. And she can go back to long course later and blow it up!

I was surprised, but... part of me always knew you would smash it! I had 2 thoughts while watching it, the first one was when you missed the front group on the bike and I thought that was the end and you were going to be swallowed up by the large chase pack but then with a lot of hard work and a push from Flora you got onto the run in style and still out front in the 2nd pack. My second thought was about what was going through Taylor Spivey's mind and also me feeling very proud to be british when you, on your short course debut, glided past Taylor Spivey, a short course veteran, fantastic runner and arguably the best american female triathlete. I was jumping up and down at that point. And that was before GB finished with 3 in the top 5 and 4 in the top 7!!!! Well done to you and all the GB girls. It was amazing...

I was definitely not surprised and would be safe to say that all of us in your fan base were rather secretly hoping for a top 5. You showed in the disciplines where you have natural raw talent (swimming) that no matter the distance you are undoubtedly the best GBR swimmer that we have, pairing it with the #2 finish that you had during Olympic swim trials. Bike and run where it’s not a straight line and more technical you were still closing in on the hilly stretches and straight lines to your competitors which shows that your body is just so used to suffering through for longer that honing that with specific speed drills, intervals stuff and more time spent learning transitions will only get you higher and better. I am hoping you bring us the Olympic gold in 2024 🙏🏽

To answer your question, I am not surprises about your performance in the short course. You've been in the triathlon game for a while and for this course to be a bit shorter, you still have all the great techniques. You've proven to be incredible athlete in triathlons, so it's not hard to believe that you would excel in the shorter race. You have put so much time and effort into training for this race that there was no doubt that you would take a top place in this race. Thought it wasn't your forte, you did absolutely amazing and it's so exited seeing what you'll be doing/accomplishing in the future. I am so inspired by you and your drive.

    Hi team CB,
I wasn’t surprised by the great result, I’m more shocked & surprised that modern triathlon is so compartmentalised into ‘short’ and ‘long’ categories i.e. where modern pro/elites feel they have to be one or the other, or, is it that their NGB’s feel they have to commit to one or the other? We have 2 distinct sports at present, and now, Lucy, you are dancing between both. Much like the legends of the past - redefining the history of our great sport! Keep mixing it up - it’s good for our great sport!! 👊🏽🌴🏊‍♀️🚴🏾‍♂️🏃🏾‍♂️💪

All round amazing performance and the GB colours suit you down to the ground 👌🏻. I bet you’d be awesome at the relay as well, please give it a try 🤞🏻. Can’t wait to see more, apologies for deafening you from the sidelines 😂😉.

Not at all surprised with the overall result. You’re a rockstar. Honestly a little surprised with how tough and powerful you were on the bike, coming out of technical corners a bit off the pace and having to drop some killer watts to catch back up, while still having enough in the tank to out run Spivey was amazing. Nice work, hope to see you in the Olympics in the future! Keep the dream alive

As a triathlete for forty years, I wasn’t fully surprised. Your strong swim ability combined with your strength and endurance certainly keeps you in any distance race. I was surprised that your cycling with such limited specific training held up. I could only imagine what a proper build up would do for you. Love the videos and love the fact you are so open to new experiences in the sport. As a coach I wish more Ironman athletes would appreciate the value of shorter races. This isn’t a new concept but in the age of specialized training it’s often forgotten!

I think a big part of that amazing race debut was how you adapted to the load on the bike and having to go hard and put down that much power on grades without knowing prior what to expect. It probably felt like a Zwift crit race. Well done 👏

Was totally NOT surprised your swim or run either. But I was seriously impressed by how well you slotted into the group riding on the bike. Such an exciting race - the hubbie even let me off helping him do DIY so I could watch 👍

The most surprising of this race was your run normally the long distance athlete just got destroy by the speed of the wts athlete but you have done such an impressive run after the bike and after leading the head group during the swim. Also you didn’t give up after got detached from the front pack in t1 and you did everything to try to catch them. Just what a race ! Can’t wait to see more!

This finish didn't surprise me at all. I had an idea that you would smash the swim and quite frankly I was at the edge of my seat watching you spread out the field very early on in the race. That swim set up the rest of the race very nicely for you and shows that in order to win short course races, a new breed and generation of triathletes who are skilled in all three disciplines are needed. And it definitely won't surprise me to see you one day in the Olympics. Olympics 2024, cmon! Cheering all the way from the Philippines!

I don't know if surprised if the word. You've been constantly improving on your run and built on your strength. Your swimming background is definitely a plus on a short course. Plus you've got a great dog. What can I say, I am a fan! can't want to see your next race!

I was surprised by the bike. We all knew you would likely push the swim to another level and I was confident you could run well, but the bike is where it's difficult to transition from long to short. This is especially true in ITU because of how tactical, technical and fast the bike can be. Great job

Was I surprised? Honestly, yes. Not because I didn’t think you could do it... but because like you said, the entire tri world was watching you! Everyone was talking about you and your race despite some of the best short course athletes being in the race. It reminded me off Jessica Ennis in the 2012 Olympics when all eyes were on her, but you carried the pressure like the true champ that you are. I hoped it wouldn’t be the case, but I was worried the pressure would have been too much, but wow how I was wrong. Go Charles-Barclay. 🤍🤍

Hi Lucy! Congratulations on your top 5 finish in Leeds! As a fellow IM athlete and a fan, I knew your swim would be the talk of the start of the race. I watched the race with an open mind, but knew that you have the ability to hold your own in the race and finish well, even podium. Competing in Super League and in Miami, showed that your performances at shorter distances are as good as IM races. Good luck during the season and Kona! You still haven't accepted my bet... If you win Kona, you get two new Lolas. Take 2nd or worse, you have to do a cannonball off a 10 meter platform and post it on your channel! You in? Go Yanks! Slainte!

I have been a big fan of yours for a few years since I started doing triathlon training myself. You were especially an inspiration to me in my initial pool sessions in my first year training. I have also loved following the short-course races because of the tactical aspects and the speed! So when I heard you would be racing short-course, I knew you could do it, especially after seeing you crush the Super League. I was so hoping you'd win Leeds, but yeah, with eleven days prep, wow... I was thinking the same thing you said. These other women have had years of experience in transitions and tactics, but I still hoped you'd smoke them all, haha. I was thrilled at your fifth place finish and first out of the water, yeah! Please, Lucy, don't give up your Olympic dream! All the best!

I was blown away by the strength of your run! I knew you'd come out in the front on the swim, and hoped you could keep up through the technical sections on the bike, but your run was a big question mark for me. I am so inspired by you!

Biggest takeaway I got was that you can accomplish anything! As a father to 3 girls, you are an inspiration to what women can do in sports and in life. After watching your dominant performance in the Olympic trial swimming event, I am no longer surprised at the challenges you place in front of yourself and love the confidence you display with each one. Keep it up, absolutely smashing job and an inspiration to my girls (and me!) from across the pond. Good luck!

The thing that most surprised me is the importance of transition in the short distance, and how that can change a race, even though you deliver incredible good sections. Anyway also amazed for incredible performance of both you and the rest of the field.

I was not surprised at your amazing top 5 finish because of your consistency and drive! I’m sure the bike handling skills was a challenge but you rose to the occasion and brought new excitement to short course. Everyone can learn and grow and you showed that by not putting limits on yourself and taking chances when the opportunity was given- you can excel in whatever you decide you want to do! Cheers!

What an impressive Olympic debut Lucy! Great to see you so near the front of the pack from the start. Strong on the swim, only losing time on the technical parts of the bike and in transition, followed by a brilliant run. That Olympic dream is very much a reality from what you did this weekend. Good luck in Kona 🍀

Not surprised at all!!! Knowing your mastery of the swim you were a shoo in to be on the front of the pack early, then with all your Zwifting I believe your bike legs could keep up with the girls and it would all boil down to not crashing on the bike, which thankfully you didn't! And the run, strong and competitive as you are you got in there and ran superb to finish 5th! Hope to see you do more of these short courses! Maybe even Paris2024!
