  • I'd really prefer it if these NPCs were quiet. Took me a long time, both to get to the successor to Tomba, but also to actually put this video together because I kept putting it off. I was on break already anyway, so extending that break was all too easy when faced with having to play through a game like this. I really wanted to like it and hoped my childhood memories were wrong. So anyway, here's a Tomba 2 review.

The music, the different worlds, and puzzles/progression are so well done. As a playstation kid, This game was my Zelda OOT. Now that I finally got around to playing it (Zelda OOT), it totally feels cut from a similar cloth of quest/adventure game, with different mechanics obviously.
With old games in general, I find I enjoy the voice acting despite its roughness (silent hill 2, tomba 2, resident evil) but this is probably due to nostalgia.

I played Tomba 1 as a kid, I thought I played the second one. I've been playing the 2nd one with the wide screen hack, and man, this is a good game. The world feels so alive, this might be the best ps1 game, this game aged like fine wine. There are so many little hidden things to discover, it feels like every thing you come across could have some purpose. Tomba 1 and 2 are much better than mario 64 imo, it just looks so much nicer and the world is much more interesting.

I never played Tomba 1 so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I think Tomba 2 is a great platformer. I remember not enjoying Mario Odyssey and thinking I'm just not into platformers anymore until I played Tomba 2 again

Fun fact, this is actually my favorite game ever. Its not something I would like today, but I playing it back when I did had such a big impact. First of all I was probably no more than 9, living in Norway so I had barely started learning English. Meaning whatever they said in this game had no effect on me either way. Second, my family didnt have much money so this was also among my earliest games ever other than playing pokemon stadium on my cusin's nintendo 64.
I remember the music movingg me so much, Tomba's design was fun, there was so many things I had never experienced in gaming. And I never did play the first one.
Literally have a tattoo of a Kujara on the inside of my left arm that I got this year because the game just means so much to me.

Honestly I can kinda relate. I myself grew up in the states, but when I first played Tomba 2, I was around the same age you were. In my case I had played at least partway through the first Tomba game as I had it on a demo disc, but I honestly still preferred the second over the first. The soundtrack is still amazing after all these years, and while I noticed some oddities with the translation and voice acting, I never paid much attention to it and chalked it up to it being an old game (even though it's literally as old as I am.) Looking back on it now, I love both games almost equally. I say almost because there were sections of the original Tomba that were infuriating at times, and Tomba 2 didn't really have any sections where it felt too hard, in fact I learned pretty early on how to cheese most of the bosses. That said, the original Tomba definitely feels a lot more fluid, and a bit more confusing with more of a "figure it out for yourself bucko" kind of attitude about it. The world feels a lot more alive and connected than it did in Tomba 2, and while I was never able to appreciate the original as a kid, I can certainly appreciate it now that I'm in my early 20's. That's not to say my love for Tomba 2 has diminished at all, but I'm realizing as I get older just what both of these games bring to the table, and what made them so great to me.
That said, from what I understand, the first Tomba is in the process of getting a remaster, so there's hope that Tomba 2 will be remastered and they can correct a lot of the oddities that were present in the original. As soon as they drop on PC, they are going straight into my library forever lol. Also, I think it's absolutely awesome that you have a Kujara tattoo. I think if I were able to get one, it'd probably be either the grapplejack or the icon from the first game that shows how many lives you have

I would love this game if it came out today. With the upscaling and widescreen hacks possible now, it is better than any modern platformer. It oozes charm that no other game can really match. You should check out the first one. I played the first one as a kid, I only just started the 2nd one, and they are both equally good, they both have a slightly different feel and look, but both are distinctly tomba.

You didn't think Tomba 2 was as good as the first one?
Well I'd prefer if you'd be quiet.
    But you are correct.
    In seriousness I used to prefer the second game, but yeah the first game is better. That said, there are a few things I prefer in the second game;
    1. Load times, as mentioned, this is nearly absent in the second game, and they hide it rather cleverly.
    2. Towns; More expansive, and more to do in them.
    3. Trolley > Motocross...like even now the Motocross is confusing, and losing a life if your car dies isn't fair.
    4. Evil pig battles; As you mentioned in Tomba 1, the pig battles had you only throw them in the bag once and be done. I was able to beat them randomly at times as a result, which isn't fun. This game has you throw them into the bag multiple times, which helps make sure you aren't just getting lucky. It's more fair overall...and the final battle isn't a complete joke as it was in the first game.
    5. No serious bugs. When playing Tomba 1 as a youngster, I almost never could finish all the events due to a bug where I couldn't get the seeds to plant. Nothing like this exists in the second game at least.
But yeah...other than that I'd say the first game is more fun. There's still parts of the first game I was always disappointed with such as the Village of Civilization and the already mentioned last battle, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it.

Lovely game but the backtracking is a little too much where you need to backtrack in unknown places to get a thing that is hard to find that you need to find or you cannot complete the game. When you find this thing you need to solve a puzzle to get it that you would never conceive.

@@JokerDoom Ouch, no way I'd pay that for Tomba 2. Honestly though, I loved the first one enough to pay that much if I had to. It might be more though since it's so much better.
That reminds me, I need a copy of Totally Rad for NES - hands down my favorite game for the console. I actually had two copies of Totally Rad as a kid because my parents would buy boxes of games at yard sales if they were cheap enough and we wound up with two. Of course our NES stopped working right (as they all do) and I did not predict anyone making a reliable variant so I didn't keep a copy like I should have... I recently saw a copy in a retro game store: $80 for just the cartridge. I should check online but my game shopping has been a bit out of hand lately so I need to hold off a little.
