I don't really do street photography, but my first career was journalism, so I have mixed feelings on these things. I think people have a right to their likeness and security in many ways, but also that we have a delusion of extreme privacy? And needlessly so. So I'm all over the place, but I would have to say it depends majorly on the situation for sure. That might even be a shot-by-shot analysis. Love the photos! Thank you for sharing.

    • @KarinMajoka

I think your comment sums it up nicely, I have mixed feeling about it as well. Most of the times I like to catch "raw" moments as they are, because I think capturing them is a form of art. But that also means in some regards stepping into somebodies privacy area. So I think we have to carefully weight out if it's the price we want to pay. And thanks for the support, Jamie. :)

This reminds me of a Daniel Armold quote on answering the question why he doesn't ask for permission: "It ruins the picture." "Because then they start thinking. They start lying." "I think the implication is just that they don't expect to be watched. Which, in public, is an unreasonable expectation."

I almost never do street photography because of the reasons you mention and also because I'm maybe just not the type to do it ...
But I think a pride event like in this video is the PERFECT moment to do street photos ... I mean, this is not your regular situation where some stressed people rush to their underground in the rain. I'd think many of these folks visit such an event to enjoy themselves, their friends, the atmosphere, and also to be seen! And whenever Karin approaches any of the persons shown in this video, it seems they all also like and enjoy to be photographed ... so I really enjoyed watching this video !!

what a lovely video 🤩 thank you for sharing! also I think I'm similar in that if I feel like the photo is focusing on a person or group vs the entire scene I'm more likely to ask if they are comfy with me taking that photo. but I think at events like this it makes sense to lean into that even more since acceptance is such an important aspect of the celebration ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍

I prefer to stay unnoticed for candid street shots/portraits and I consider this to be my strength when it comes to do street photography. I am never good taking posed photo/portrait, and the other big reason that I prefer candids because then I get to capture real expression of a person and not a posed one.
But lately, I have been trying to interact the people on streets before or after taking their pictures. I am trying to merge the two as one, that I somehow get to capture real emotion and that the other person get to see it too.

Great photos! A nice mix of candid slice-of-life (and wide slices) along with casual posed shots, both approaches resulting in appropriate captures. The fan, flag and sunglasses helped to make unique moments. I am impressed with the X-Pan results, but a spread-out event in the street really is an ideal application.

As a general rule for street and event photos, I ask permission to take photos. A little conversation before shooting puts the subjects at ease and their facial expressions are more genuine and friendly. This way I get some personality in the photos, rather than shooting posed statues. I see-in your subjects they show a connection to you. As always, I enjoy seeing your work. Thanks.

Interesting approach, thanks for your comment! When it comes to street portraits I also think that talking to the people and building a connection helps to improve the images. @@KarinMajoka I forgot a couple things I wanted to say. If the lighting is strong, I will underexpose a little. If light is not strong, I will overexpose. The asking consent question is an important one; thanks for bringing it up. I have mixed and evolving feelings on it. I've definitely in the past gone down the try-to-be-unnoticed route, but more recently I've increasingly taken to asking for consent -- or, sometimes, not shooting. Not sure I've figured it out well enough to really say much more, except that I value that you asked the question of your viewers -- and the consent of many of your subjects.

    • @KarinMajoka

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it a lot! It's really interesting to hear about other peoples' experiences. For me it really depends on the context. I'm a trans woman and before I came out (I was around 15), I did attend a Pride event and had my photo taken without my consent. I understand street photography, but it was terrifying to have happen. Since it was my first event, it was also my first time wearing a dress in public. As you can imagine, I felt incredibly anxious and vulnerable, and yet I had to chase down that photographer and ask them to delete it. That would be impossible if it were a film camera, meaning I'd have to trust a total stranger to remember not to use that image anywhere.
I do my own street photography nowadays and do take photos at a distance or from the hip, but I'd never take a single image at an event where people are vulnerable without their consent, even if that means I don't take any
Either way, I still love your videos, but asking consent at Pride, protests, or any gathering of people that might get backlash from family or workplaces for being there I feel is an absolute must

I do not see any hypocrisy at all, she was simply telling about her own experiences and her own approach, which I absolutely respect. Therefore @Peyton: Thanks for sharing! I am sorry to hear that your first pride experience was connected to fear and uncertainty because of that photo. And I also agree with some of the point of your opinion on this topic, it simply is different taking street images on an event like the pride in comparison to the regular streets since we don't know how "safe" it is for some of the people to be there and be photographed. Some people might not be out yet or be from countries where there is still a penalty on homo- or transsexuality. Therefore, I absolutely respect your opinion and think that this is also what motivated me to ask for consent so many times.

    • @Niele160

If you are just going to pack them away, use them commercially, or to put in a RUclips video (quasi commercial). If the reason for the. photos are for video exposure, I'd ask permission, particularly if the subjects are watching you and seem concerned.

So I think we have to take that into account as well, since having a photo taken on an event like that might not be as "safe" for everybody as having their photo taken on the regular street.

@@KarinMajoka ok i see I respect your opinion about it but think about it if a child with LGBT and who will be his father or mother in his registration (birth certificate) ? In school? In marriage? In Health insurance, death certificate, etc. there's so many conflicts if both men are into marriage life or vice-versa both women also. Even if the human law permits it, it will be conflicts I hope you get my point or explanation here because that's also the problem in Japan or other countries the law said it is man and woman gender not same sex. The role of gender of being mother and father to that child in family. But still nice street photography i like the colors like how you look at it and how you take the pictures 🙏👍😁💯📸

@@junichinomura4810 That's interesting, because you are pointing towards a very important issue, that the LGBTQ+ community is actually fighting for: equal rights for queer families, also in front of the law. It is still complicated or even forbidden in some countries to marry somebody of the same sex, to adopt children together, or even to visit their partner in the hospital etc. - but this is a social issue that needs to be changed and not the fault of queer people. You seem like somebody who maybe did not have a lot of encounters with people from the LGBTQ+ community so I do not blame you at all and appreciate that you are open for conversations. :) Maybe to make it a bit more understandable: imagine that you are not able to marry the person that you love just because of their gender. It is love and love is one of the most beautiful things in the world - and as long as it is consensual I do not see any reason why love should be illegal or forbidden. In your comments between the lines I also read some concern about the upbringing of children in rainbow families. I work as a psychologist and read psychological research on a daily basis. I can assure you that so far there is not a single paper showing that growing up in a family with two mothers or two fathers has a negative impact on the child, in fact it's just the opposite. If you are interested in learning some more about this topic, just hit me up and I can provide you with some reliable scientific sources.

    • @junichinomura4810
      @junichinomura4810 3 года назад

@@KarinMajoka I'm open to it but even in scientific explanation the gender genes Typically, biologically male individuals have one X and one Y chromosome (XY) while those who are biologically female have two X chromosomes. That being said man is being man, and woman is being woman, You can't mixed up the two to create something new it is not a human being anymore and even you check that gay or lesbian scientifically the result is man and woman. Science, Religion, Law,,etc. speaks that there's a conflicts not the social or people's interests, likes,, or how you understand it. It is already there when you are born beforehand you can't choose what gender you will be or ask by your parent if you like to be boy or girl or in between, because it is already destined before you will be born by God or Creator if I sound like a some kind of religion person. Or universe or fate. I hope you get it and I understand what you like to point out to me but it is difficult that's why government or many people still don't accept it and even in history there in Europe theologians and philosopher said if you don't accept who you are and what you are (it is the gender and the whole being of you) then you definitely denying your existence. The big difficulty is the Natural law. Even Plato in his writing In the Laws, Plato applies the idea of a fixed, natural law to sex, and takes a much harsher line than he does in the Symposium or the Phraedrus. In Book One he writes about how opposite-sex sex acts cause pleasure by nature, while same-sex sexuality is “unnatural” (636c). Aristotle law of non-contractors etc. And also about your issue of social something. For this is the best explanation.
Social Justice Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society
Equity the quality of being fair and impartial
Equality the status of being equal, especially in status, rights or opportunities.
Now that's explanation, rights and opportunities are for both man and women because that time it is established is there's no law against or law that defend a gays or lesbians. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say it's long hope you read and understand it well thanks and I will wait for your next street photography video 👍😁💯📸

@@junichinomura4810 Oh boy, where shall I start. To be honest I have a very hard time understanding what you are trying to say, so I might have also misunderstood some things. First of all: I think you are mixing up sexual identity (e.g. being heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, etc.) with gender identity (e.g. beging a cis or a trans person). If you are not very familiar with these terms I understand why it can be challenging to distinguish, but maybe some research about the different concepts of gender and sexuality might help you out to understand it better. Referring to old texts by philosophers is pretty risky territory if you ask me. Some centuries ago women were "worth less" than men or black people were held as slaves - and I hope we agree that both is simply untrue and unequal due to today's standards. So quoting a text referring to homosexuality from those times does not make sense at all. Honestly, I do not want to go further into the the discussion, all I am saying is that homosexuality and other forms of consensual sexual identity just as well as transsexuality is absolutely normal and should be normalised by society and law. And if you think otherwise: check your sources. Scientific literature is more reliable and valid than 3000 year old outdated texts. I hope I do not sound too harsh and I hope you understand my point, I just do not want to leave room for any form of the slightest homo- or transphobia on my channel, which is why it is an important issue for me to spread knowledge about this topic. Regarding my photography I appreciate your kind words though.
