Dr Paul Mason uses science to answers questions about vegan and carnivore diets..

  • In December 2020, Dr Paul Mason was interviewed by SBS TV (a national broadcaster in South Korea) for a documentary on nutrition. The purpose of this documentary is to assess the science behind plant based diets. This in the context of increasing popularity of these diets (in part driven by a wildly popular pro-vegetarian program from the same broadcaster 10 years prior) to see whether the health claims of plant based diets stack up.
Since the recording of this interview, a recently published systematic review (www.cochrane.org/CD013501/VAS...) on vegan diets found that there have been zero randomised controlled trials evaluating clinical outcomes of pure plant based diets. This finding at the very least, should bring into question the validity of claims made regarding putative health benefits of vegan diets.

People in the "blue zones" not only have generally healthy lifestyles, they also eat a whole lot more meat than was initially reported. In particular, most of them love pork.
And yes, Hong Kong has the highest meat consumption per capita in the world, AND the highest life expectancy in the world, and this despite a generally not very healthy lifestyle (stress, pollution, etc).

Indeed some long-lived and healthy people eat primarily carbohydrate and plant-based diets, but what I've noticed is that they do include mixed animal proteins, exercise, practice fasting, get sunlight, live low-stress lifestyles, have strong social connections, and that ALL of these factors are very, very important. 2 things about eggs, one is the risk of contamination via raw eggs, in particular the 'whites' i.e. salmonella and the other is raw egg whites lock up biotin which may affect the levels of this necessary compound. Eggs are in the scheme of things though one of the most absorbable foods known, even for an animal food it is top tier converted easily for use. .... as long as you do not react to them that is and I feel sorry for those that do.

there are some groups who are genetically developed to not use much salt at all, much like some have adapted to low choline diets etc so now they produce it themselves. The importance is salt to taste, it the bowels are not moving well maybe try a little more salt. Personally I use lots of salt and from overall meta analysis of health studies eating ABOVE the maximum daily recommended value of sodium shows more benefits than eating within the recommended 'healthy' range.
Lactobaillus is a huge group, which specific strains are we talking here? Strains like acidophilus have been actively shown to increase weight gain by increasing hunger signals (hence why they push that rubbish in yogurts etc). Strains like reuteri which can be found in products like biogaia and I think colic treatments for children are especially beneficial not just for children.

When you first go SAD to low carb, it can be a bit grim until you get everything good at fat burning. Maybe it's the same going the other way?
      And/or
When running gluconeogenesis, there's a biochemical interlock (glucagon?) that blocks insulin production and lets glucose rise a bit after eating some carbs?

All seed oils are potentially dangerous in excess. How they are "pressed" is inconsequential seeing as the maconutrients they provide are what is potentially harmful. If you get a little bit of it in your diet and you are not sick, don't worry, but there is probably no need to go out of your way to add lots of seed oils to your diet.

    • @jimmyatoms4438

      @@cantankerouspatriarch4981
      Um.
      Macronutrients are,
      Carbohydrates, Proteins, & Fats.
      Oils are Fat.
And the way they're "pressed" matters.
Cold Pressed means just that. They're squished. That is all. They're not superheated, or processed with solvents, or hydrogenated. Processed vegetable oils (corn, soy, sunflower, canola, cottonseed, e.t.c...) are disturbingly processed with all of the aforementioned and more. It's the general consensus among the overwhelming number of dietitians/medical professionals that they're terrible. Poison really.
Coconut oil is high in Saturated fat, and does not oxidize readily. It's shelf stable for a couple years. There may be an argument made that coconut oil isn't a whole food and that is somehow bad.
I personally don't subscribe to this, and with a medium/high proportion of medium chain triglycerides, is considered readily mobile for energy usage. For these reasons, I personally find it to be an excellent choice. Among the plant oils, I feel it's superior to cold pressed olive or avocado. Do your own research, I saw claims that it raises LDL cholesterol, but I question the validity of the study. Also the smoke point is 350° and I'm not sure what exactly happens chemically at that point, I just stay below that if cooking with it as burning food is generally bad.

    • @robinbeers6689

In the wild there are actually very few edible plants. We have engineered a lot of the produce aisle. For example the whole cruciferous veg section is the result of human tinkering with one edible wild mustard plant.

The oil is limited to the germ of the kernel, and when corn is prepared traditionally by nixtamalization, treatment with alkali, the corn oil is essentially turned into soap, washed away, and discarded. So it’s not traditionally eaten. Even in modern uses of corn it could be considered a waste product except that the germ contains enough useful things to save, and corn oil is useful though not a good food.

this is the simple science of it broken down into a small enough piece to give people an idea that fibre is no needed in the least. I have seen plenty of studies that shows soluble fibre and how great it is ..... compared to insoluble fibre that is. apart from that it is all weakly associated highly confounded epidemiology right down the line on fibre consumption except trials like the one he mentioned.

you don't develop cancer 'soon'. cancer is a metabolic issue that is years or decades in the making. Such a stressful change in diet may have revealed the symptoms earlier than what you normally be revealed though. Vegan diets can often mask poor health, because they look sick, often feel sick but won't get help and often have low to very low LDL which is also an indicator in a normal person that there might be something functionally wrong but low LDL is also a 'feature' of many on the vegan diet.

That's basically a cherry picking fallacy. To actually demonstrate false a GENERAL rule, you need a much bigger sample instead of a much tinier one. Let me give you an example with the follow statement:
"My grandfather smoked for 50 years and he died at 90 years old with no history of cancer whatsoever. Anti-smoking campaigns must be a hoax."
You see it? I'm not trying to make fun of you or something like that, but applying the same logic to a less slanted topic helps quite a lot to understand the problem.

  • @LinusBerglund

I have gotten to the 15 minute mark, and none of the things I have looked up are never really what he claims. My bullshit-o-meter went off with the Indian study. I looked it up. It doesn't compensate for smoking. I checked smoking rates in India. Smoking is vastly more common in the south.
I then found two studies that compensated for smoking that found that northerners had a higher mortality.
That he can sit there and deliver this with a straight face is mind-boggling.
