Thanx, Nick. The fact that you showed a mistake gives you even more credibility. Appreciate your easy walk-thru videos.
Sure thing!
Cheers
Thank you so much for this!!!! I’ve been nervous about the rotary so I’ve been putting it off. Your explanation and video showed me it’s not scary at all! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
I just wanted to say thank you! (Again)
I go back to most of your videos probably 3 times. Once before I buy, once while waiting, once to set.up, and maybe a fourth if I need a refresher. I appreciate the work you put into your content!
Glad to help!
Thanks for the clarification! I kept making the same mistake, until I found your video. I wish I had found it sooner.
Glad you figured out why you were having to invert the images... I might have snickered just a little when you flipped the rotor!
I based the orientation of the rotary based on a couple of their photos of it with the machine. Just goes to show, never trust the marketing dept! LOL
Cheers
Thinking I might have to upgrade from my Ortur to the X tool especially now that it works with lightburn looks like a pretty handy laser
Yeah, I kind of like having them both around. That way I can tinker with the Ortur! LOL
Cheers
You are a rockstar and I enjoy your videos
Thank you.
Cheers
I have the same machine, mine would probably take an hour to do this small logo… why?? Also can you engrave tumblers with that soft matte coating??
Depends on the detail of the engrave. And yes. But do a test grid first. Sometimes the settings are a little different.
*clinkeez* 🍻 algorithm bump.
Butta butta!!! Clicked like and subscribe immediately! My kind of video!!
Welcome to the Fray!
Cheers
2:08 The EASIEST way to ensure it's square is simply move the head left and right while looking down at a roller.
Lovr your videos. So you ahve a build for the Jason mask on the wall behind you?
Looks like you found it!
Cheers
Could Probably laser in a nice reference box for that rotary to line it up reliably and quickly
Not a bad idea!
Cheers
Is it not necessary to vent the laser outdoors when engraving on metal like this? Once I put the extra legs to get the height, my laser enclosurer won't close all the way so any fumes might not be caught with my fan exhaust.
You always want to vent outside or use a fume extractor.
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks. Didn't look like you had it vented in the videos. That's why I asked.
Can you leave the rotary tool connected and still use the laser as normal?
No
Love your videos. I apologize if you've already done this but I'd like the ability to engrave pint beer glasses. Have you done anything like this where the diameter changes as you move up the glass.
Hey Jeff!
I have not. But, stay tuned. I plan on making a video on this in the next few weeks!
Cheers
Great videos, is it possible to engrave a picture with shades on a tumbler? Or do you remove all the material? I want to add a character to a Yeti mug.
You can.....but black and white images look cleaner.
*I ALWAYS wrap my piece with paper and test with a light engrave setting. NO ROOM FOR MISTAKES*
Hey Nick, what is the part number for the rotary engraver laser attachment. I bought the DX1 pro 10 watt, but can’t find the part number and price for the rotary attachment. Thanks
Here's the link to their new rotary:

I need to etch a cup that isn’t an even cylinder which makes it impossible for the rotary attachment to accurately rotate it. Do you have any products or advice you can give? I’d really appreciate it!
Wedge it! A lot of folks trying to engrave things like pint glasses for example put a wedge under the rotary towards the narrow end to give themselves a level working surface.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you so much for replying and answering my question I really appreciate it. Just one more question if I may. Do you have any specific ones in mind? Can you link me to something to buy? I trust your judgment.
Hey Nick, I can't get the D1 software to recognize the rotary, and all connections are good. What would you suggest?
It’s either a bad connection or bad cabling.
What did you do to set up rotary tool? Any measurements you have to do?
Not for these particular tumblers. You can move the rollers to accommodate different sized cylinders, but these fit the current set up.
Cheers
I don't have all those settings at the bottom? Do I have to click something or is it a different version? Also I am having trouble finding the one that you used lazerburn as well.
You have to have an object (engraveable) selected in order for them to show up.
Cheers
Do you have to remove the risers when finished burning cups (if you want to burn a piece of wood for instance)?
Yes
I have the same setup. Do you have any tips for lining up your engraving with the branding on the cup?
start your engrave from the center in laserbox. And I find that if I get eye level with the rails I can see the crosshairs better, so I do that to line them up with the piece.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild I wonder what I am doing wrong. I choose to center in laserbox, I line it up eye level, and use a measuring tape to make sure I am dead center and lined up with the branding logo. For some reason, the cup turns what looks to be about a quarter turn before starting to engrave. I have tried to account for that, but can never get it right. Not sure if it’s some kind of a quirk with my machine/rotary in particular or what, but never heard of anyone else having problems. (Unless they don’t care too much about the branding being aligned lol).
@@ssarver1672 try going through the framing routine twice.
@@BuildDadBuild hI sir was wondering your suggestion on the best spray to coat bare stainless for engraving? Sorry if you've covered this
Im looking at the D1 to engrave anodized aluminum cylinders, have you tried to mark anodized aluminum?
Are the cylinders coated? I have not had success with marking straight aluminum with a diode laser.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild yep anodized
What settings did you use for the tumbler?...it came out really nice
The settings for coated metal in Laserbox.
Cheers
Will this engrave through a thicker coating on the metal? Like a yeti or hydroflask type of bottle?
Yes it will.
Cheers!
@@BuildDadBuild what settings so you suggest mine didn't do to well
How you ran into an issue with the rotary not rotating? If so, how did you fix it?
UsuLly if it’s not roaring the plug isn’t seated.
@@BuildDadBuild I checked, the connectors are fully seated. I’m still having issues

How do you engrave a ceramic coffee mug (with a handle) with the Xtool D1 Laser Engraver?
ruclips.net/video/Vjlu84bEEVo/видео.html
Cheers!
Do you think it would be possible to engrave a golf ball?
Possibly. You'd have to run some tests...
Cheers
Hey there Nick or anyone else.. I'm stuck on a mistery. Somehow I changed the settings and now the rotary module is laser images the other direction = inverted images. I can't find anything where I changed something? Is there a little switch on the Xtool I touched by an accident or so? I'm baffled 😐
Ok...I'm an idiot ! Confirmed.. I set my project to laser flat instead of cylindrical.. lol
When you hit start and have that window come up with framing and the 4 arrows. My laserbox doesn't have that home icon in the middle like yours does. Is that anything to worry about?
No. That's an older version of the software. That home button went away 2-3 versions ago. You're good to go!
Cheers
bald beetlejuice from need for speed
how do I engrave on a square whiskey glass? thx for your time...
You don't need a rotary for that. It's a flat surface.
I started to get confused, do not reverse/invert the image, and rotate it 90⁰ on the screen the way it should look on the tumbler. Correct?
Yup
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you sir!!!
If I have it sent as cylindrical, and I go to frame my design, it just moves the cup and goes in a straight line instead of framing around the design, then it engraves in a straight line. But when I have it set as a flat surface, it will frame around the design and engrave the design but won't move the cup. Do you know why this is?
You have something set up incorrectly. Possibly the cable from the rotary to the machine isn’t seated properly.
Did the latest update remove your cylinder working button? I can't find it even after reinstall of the software
Are you still using Laserbox Basic? I'm using XCS and it appears to still be there.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild I am, I've thought of using light burn but haven't purchased that. Is the xcs through xtool? If so what does it run price wise normally?
I just got a xtool and I dont have a home button in the middle of my positioning buttons on the framing screen. Could you tell me why that is?
It is my understanding that the home button went away after the last update. I have not heard if this was on purpose or accident at this time. Support is aware and looking into it.
Cheers
How do you know which way to turn the tumbler so the engraving doesn’t appear upside down?
Trial and error!
Hey what kind of laptop are you using I have a Hp windows 10 will that work?
Should work fine. Don't need fancy specs for these programs. Just avoid Chromebooks (no support)
Cheers
1:00 *INFO STARTS HERE*
do you know what settings to use in lightburn if one is engraving multiple mugs to have the same template, the same position of the rotary, for the laser to go to the same spot everytime? for some reason, I will use the same everything and repositing the laser to the back left (my origin) and it will always be a little off when doing the same design file on a tumbler. i can't figure it out.. my Chinese laser doesn't give me that issue at all. i have tried all the different "start from" positions and it's so inaccurate when I try to engrave the same thing twice. i don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I don't have a geat solution for you. I don't use a rotary in Lightburn very often. But when I use the rotary in Laserbox I always hand position it.
Cheers
Can you use the rotary tool with LightBurn?
It should be compatible. I haven't tried it though.
Cheers
Yes, you can!
@@Coachdylanhatch Yes, they have instructions in their "User Manual for xTool D1 LightBurn Software" page.
Can this laser do 3d engraving using grayscale image depth map?
Yes. I've seen folks in some of my laser groups do crazy 3D (looking) engravings.
Cheers
Is there a lazerbox for d1 pro.
Their new software is called XCS
Is there a reason why mine came out squished?
There's a bunch of reasons. Usually the tumbler is slipping on the rollers. Try weighting it down with a bean bag or ziplock full of rice.
Cheers
Is that noise in the background supposed to entertain me, or is it a machine running in your shop?
It's a shop. There's usually something running in the background.
Cheers
Have you used your D1 rotary tool after upgrading your D1 firmware? I can no longer use mine after updating my firmware. The Z steps per mm ($102) seems to be off and there's no way to set it to what it used to be. It's set to 0 now when it used to be 100.
I haven't had it set up since the upgrade.
