Cheap alternative to Roof Top Tents that's actually better.

  • Moon Shade found here! : moonfab.com/pr... Did I finally discover the perfect tent for car camping? No, its not a $6000 dollar roof top tent or your favorite Overlanders top choice. Its a $250 dollar Costco pop up tent that goes up in roughly 2 minutes. This tent can be packed away , tossed into any vehicle and best of all. you can leave your camp site up! After years of camping in roof top tents i feel like i finally discovered a better and cheaper alternative. When camping with family at National Parks, i have never felt like a roof top tent was a good option. it forces you into cramped conditions, usually in the parking space rather than the camp ground.

I was ready for a change from car camping out of a Prius in the mountains above Ruidoso so I set a tent out. The next morning I woke up to a Jaguar growling outside the tent wall. I usually car camp unless I can get a chance to explore an area first.

I've been ground camping for 60 years. I love it, but if you're limited on space, the rooftop tent wins in footprint spacing problems, or camping in rattlesnake areas.

    • @gablamo013
      @gablamo013 2 года назад +2

According to some people, animals like a rattle snake can make it up to your tent before you can get to the zipper therefore disputing this benefit, but with that in mind some people still believe the earth is a pancake 😂

I have decades of camping experience, from serving in the Marines to RTT’s. For me, it RTT all day long for the win! Always level and flat (no holes, rocks or slopes). …and critter free. Ground tents win if you have large families and/or large dogs. You ground tent folks can have it! I’ll be up in my RTT. Cheers!

Have 50+ years of camping and overloading (before it was known as overloading). Have gone full circle with RTT"s. Came to my conclusion with an RTT is that after I spend around $4,000 (tent and rack for my JKU) i'm still sleeping in a tent so I am staying with a ground tent. Just upgraded to a Gazelle T4 for around $450. Was on a Death Valley trip a few months ago, several other group members had RTT, and with the 40+ mph winds they had a terrible time sleeping in their RTT's., I moved my JKU to blocks the wind from my tent and had a peaceful night. My opinion, each to your own and do what makes you happy ad comfortable. Big fan of Joshua Tree as well. Just get out and have fun!

@@Maxx.Powell I agree to a point. Since I live in Las Vegas, the Area BFE rooftop does an important service. Being off the ground eliminates scorpions, rattlesnakes, and other nasty critters from being in your tent, shoes, sleeping gear, etc. When I lived in the northern US, this certainly wasn’t an issue. I don’t run a fridge or a lot of the other gismos, since I can go old school with a cooler and still offroad pretty hard in Moab, Death Valley, Great Basin, etc. I appreciate the simplicity for sure. I had to get Alcan 1100 lb springs to support my armor, tent, and extended range fuel tank. Running the +2 total chaos long travel with sway bar for the longer trips getting to the trails. I hope you keep making videos.

Its also a good way to secure some valuable equipment from camp thieves. Which are unfortunately more common than people think. Especially along major trail system like the Appalachian trail.

RTT’s are limiting in that if it rains, you have to open up the tent to air dry the material, and if it continues to rain, you’re probably going to have a soaking RTT that is now growing mold/fungus…. However the chances of your ground tent growing mold is also a big one, but there is one difference, if you can find a dry area, you can open it up; allowing it to dry, however that RTT is going to be sitting there on your truck/van or what have ou….

That tent would get hammered in a summer 1-2 day downpour in the Midwest. Most all of these tents here in the Midwest need a rainfly that go to the ground. But there is always the truck. I’m working on a cheap quick setup…flexible loop poles with a tarp overtop and bunjicord tie downs.

The two biggest things RTT’s have over ground tents are A) if you’re in predator country it just gives you a bit more peace of mind having the higher ground (and fucking weirdos too) and B) it stays SO much cleaner in the tent. Like, insanely cleaner. But for a family unless you have an overland trailer and you’re set up with two tents I see how this is much more convenient and comfortable, so it really just depends on your trip and your situation.

No reason to spend $1000+ on a RTT that you drive thousands of miles with it on and use it rarely. For mine I do have an air mattress but most of the time I just roll or and compress a 4” foam mattress topper. And if your camping I. The cold air mattresses will never warm up. That’s why I’ve gone over to the memory foam. Also ground tents are way easier with dogs.

Grab a chair, a cheap tent, a cooler, some beer, water, some meat and invite a funny friend and Google some close spots to visit for 1 day maybe 2. That's a start!

Hey Maxx it was a pleasure meeting you at the Northwest Overland Rally. My name is Dave and me and my buddy got a quick minute to chat with you. It’s these videos why I follow. Too easy to fly solo with all the other RUclipsrs . You continue to bring the family and balance Maxx Powell with being everyday Joe and Dad to the kiddos. We dads live vicariously through you and the added struggles of living out your dream and bringing the fam into the picture has me hooked as we are all in the same boat. Keep up the great vids and wish you well on your family’s journey.

Dude that's so awesome. Thanks for this comment 👊 I'm glad we got to meet and that you enjoy the videos. It's a fun life and I'm lucky to share it with others.

I’m a Toyota guy through and through I own a 2021 top of the line Tacoma TRD ORDC 4x4 lifted with fox by pass on all 4 corners with led head lights and just ove the truck I’ve been trying to like this new tundra but I just can’t get over the looks I think Toyota fell way short on this new tundra. I do the same thing I bring my ground pop up tent and throw a big air mattress in there plug to the Tacoma outlet in the bed and air it up less than 5 min .
Which do you like better your taco or the new tundra ? Good content man keep it up 👍🏻

Ich habe das Dachzelt autocamp family 190. Das einzige was bei Ihnen besser ist, ist der Preis. Das Dachzelt ist in Handarbeit in Deutschland gemacht und jeden Cent wert.

those pop up 2 minute tents or the truck bed tents from amazon.. is what i usually use. forget spend thousands of dollars for the hyped roof top tents. I ain't trying to lose my foot step while trying to get down the ladder to just go pee late at night. lmfao..

Very nice set up with the family. Nice job on the video. Aren’t you supposed to be in Green Bay for training camp. Just kidding. The truck is nice too.

Why do I feel nervous when you’re climbing up rocks Maxxident? 😂 Word of caution. Rattlesnakes and scorpions can be found in areas like this. Keep a close eye on the fam and yourself. As always; love the vid bud!!!
