  • I have always admired the folkboat design, so when I was in Europe recently, I chartered one for the day. Here is how it went! I often day dream about buying on of these, so I put it through it's paces to see if I'd like it. I test how it behaves on the different points of sail, how it maneuvers and how well it sails itself in different directions.
    I'm not affiliated with this but you can actually hire this particular boat

    I owned and sailed a Folkboat for 10 years. Nothing but praise for the design. Enjoyable and easy to sail single-handed, strong and able to handle heavy seas, and definitely able to set up to self steer. The keel shape and ballast always made you feel confident. Of course, everyone will tell you that there isn't a lot of room down below. Sitting or crouching, no standing.

      @@ATubeYouAre-u3f i really like the way this particular one was setup. Below there was just one big bed instead of two skinny ones. You dont need standing headroom if its not necessary to move around inside the boat

    Lovely boat. Cool video. And I learnt something from how you tied off the tiller. Thanks!

    Wooden boats are very beautiful, and sails way better than fiberglass boats. I had the great experience of sailing in a folkboat, amazing.

      Wooden boats can be beautiful but saying they sail better than GRP is nonsense.

      I have noticed how cheap they are in Sweden! Obviously a lot of maintainance, but a mooring in Sweden is expensive or requires a long waiting list right? That's part of why the boats go so cheap

    Do folkbiats have reefing points? How do you reduce sail? .... assuming you have to.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  8 дней назад

      @@justme-wh5li i think this one was set up for day sailing and/or racing maybe and had no reefpoint. If it had been my boat, a reef point is certainly the first thing i would change! I understand that it sails quite well with just the jib, i even saw footage of one tacking, jib only! so dropping the main is an option.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  8 дней назад

      Also the mainsail had a luff rope that went into the mast track. Very nice sail shape with no gaps, but impractical for cruising because the sail doesnt stay attached when you drop it

    Did you need to demonstrate any competence (link to youtube channel)? Give a bond? What did it cost to rent for the day? Do you just need to say, I want a boat? Thanks for the vid :D

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  2 года назад +1

      it was ~100 euro with ~500 bond. when he was showing me the boat, we were looking for the cooker, and he said the way I looked through the *cupboards* convinced him I was a boat guy...
      Another time, when asked specifically for a certificate I just said "I can tie a bowline with my eyes closed!" and they said that was very convincing!

      @@dominictarrsailing Ha! yes that sounds straight forward not what I expected with german process. I was in germany last week and had to register my address, complete a form, show my passport, and be issued with a identification card to sit in the public library (took 30 minutes).

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  2 года назад

      @@c.stewart000 yeah I know it! to get a german sim card I had to go to the post office and show them my passport. (there was an online verification, through video chat, but there was no option for "new zealand passport" at the verifiers end!
      but apparently if you go to a spatsi you can get a preregistered simcard.
      I read that the med requires a certificate but the baltic is just your own responsibility

    Not to wazz on you pommes frites mate, but that's not a folkboat. That's a 'familj folkboat". Same rig and hull, but a roomy, luxurious interior from the bigger coachroof :-).
    And if those hulls don't leak (early in the season at least), there's something wrong.

    Good to see you enjoying the old girl, they really are are beautiful sailing boats as you discovered.

    "The Nordic Folkboat (Swedish: Nordisk Folkbåt) is a Swedish sailboat that was designed by Jac Iversen [sv] and Tord Sundén as a racer-cruiser and first built in 1942. Even though Sundén drafted the plans with design ideas provided by Iversen, Sundén was never credited as the actual designer of the boat.[".

    My father and I used to sail almost every weekend with ours during the 90s. A lot of work to keep in shape (and not too leaky!) but very good boat to own if you want to meet nice people and chat. Another great 🇸🇪 design by Tord Sundén (with help from 🇳🇴 Jac Iversen)
