And honestly, that brings me to ask how the fuck could any of this be enjoyable in the first place- like, I imagine at some point it's extremely stressful to Averra. And besides, if I wanted to play the part of a corrupt, power-hungry politician in a nation roleplay it would be much more fun and engaging to have others being genuinely on-board. as someone who was in the alcris server (though not active enough in it to be aware about the whole alt situation) and who was familiar with a few of the people in this video, watching this felt like having an anvil dropped on my head, especially realizing what youtube channel this is from
I've spoken with Averra before. My region used to have good relations with a region he was in (in about 2019). He developed some really weird assembly of regions, like a mini-UN for non-NationStates players, where he proceeded to kick out all the regions that didn't do exactly as he said. Then he accused me randomly of harassing his DMs with an alt, it obviously wasn't me lol, but when I heard about this I thought about how ironic that all was in the end. Funnily enough he DMed me about two years later asking me to make a map for him.
I was on the server too. I’m a member of TWR and I just discovered all of this because of this video. It’s so weird in retrospect and is kind of terrifying

The investigation using "idiosyncratic behaviors" was super interesting! In linguistics we call it an Idiolect, and the way you used it is the way it is also commonly used to find suspects in forensic linguistics. It was actually used in helping identify the Unabomber. I know nothing about Nationstates, but this was an interesting video nonetheless!
Alot of this is vaguely reminiscent of the techniques used by law enforcement agencies to track cyber criminals, and also to check integrity in actual elections. Language has patterns, and people have patterns. The more you try to obscure the pattern, the more visible it becomes, especially if included in a larger data set.
Didn’t know the term in linguistics, but I was reminded of that because of the “/ j” behavior. That’s a French thing, right? And this guy is supposedly Swiss (the mention that a cluster of accounts were CTE because of Swiss military conscription).

Wait, People put effort into those? I'm still confused as to what the guy was saying about "discord account widgets" or whatever personality test he was talking about.
@wickederebus If I'm running multiple alt accounts and don't want to be caught I'll surely have each account have a profile pic of a different style. His alts all have profile pics that seem like the same person came up with them

As a West Pacific loyalist for what must be nearly 6 years now, this whole topic is supremely fascinating. While I've dipped my toes into the occasional regional RP event here and there, the idea that one could get so invested in what is, in essence, an entirely synthetic and isolated government, as to orchestrate an elaborate internal plot to defraud its intended checks and balances and seize supreme command is utterly alien to me. Low key terrifying but also incredibly meaningless. This is amount of work, both digital and social, that could amount him a degree and good job. Or even real world political party. Why the fuck he wasted it on this, instead.
Fezzian must feel like a king watching this and knowing he was absolutely vindicated by history in every way. Feel so bad for him knowing he should have had a landslide victory.
This story is eerily similiar to my experience with the region North Ustaynga from 2016-2020, and based on the end of the video, I have serious concerns this may be the same person. A multi lingual man (spoke same languages as Alverra) who’s supposed wife, mother in law, and multiple childhood friends were all co moderators of the security council of that server was revealed to be one person. Many other alt accounts were uncovered. He had been rigging the elections and development and research for years, as well as culturally and socially manipulating the server through his extensive network of alts. He normalised bizarre in character behaviours that most real players disliked but were overruled by his network of alts. He scapegoated one nation, Omnum, in a similiar manner to how he degraded the leader of the opposition on Alcris. For years ive wondered what happened to him, and it sounds like he just continued his behaviour in Alcris. I believe this might be another layer to the drama that goes even deeper - happy to discuss further if it raises alarm bells for you as well?
as someone who runs two separate accounts and is terrified of people discovering they're both me this guy's lack of self-preservation is astonishing. how often do you see people using ai generated animals as their profile pictures? not nearly enough for twenty accounts using it to not be weird
It's really interesting about those "idiosyncracies", as you called them. I have many alt accounts, connected to various topics and interests. Well, note to self "Stop putting so much of yourself on the internet!!!" This comment by itself is probably a little too much.
Realistically, no, theyre is way too many bots and users on the internet for anyone to physically find you on it, its more likely someone would hack you, and stalk you to find such information than for it to be found naturally, With the usage of AI though, that might change in the future
There are ways to disguise yourself and your patterns of behavior - everything from your login patterns to stylometry (how you choose to write) to what personalities you choose to represent can all be obfuscated to significant degrees. Geez. This bubbled up in my recs and... great noodly appendages. Bob's pipe. Josh of Nazareth. The ending gave me whiplash. Some are theorising multiple personalities, but it's more like a novelist. Some of these accounts are paper thin background extras, some main cast supports... but there's only one main character. Edit: thanks to those below who clarified further on the real life personality states that we blindly lump into "multiple personality disorder".
yeah there's no way they're plural (more modern term for "multiple personalities"). plural people online, in my experience, usually either (1) hide it (because being plural is not really yet societally acceptable unfortunately) or (2) use one account with ways of distinguishing who exactly is speaking (on discord PluralKit is usually used for this purpose). nobody makes multiple alts and pretends each alt is entirely unrelated from eachother unless they're trying to do sockpuppetry.
@thezipcreator The modern term for Multiple Personality Disorder is Dissociative Identity Disorder. People with this disorder aren't "plural", they're people with DID. The "plural" thing was made up by attention-seekers pretending to have DID because they think it's cool, ignoring how DID is a serious mental disorder that is caused by extreme emotional trauma and greatly impacts DID sufferers' daily functioning. Please don't romanticize mental health issues.
@@thezipcreator Stop calling them "plural". DID is a serious mental disorder which only arises from severe early childhood trauma. It is not cute or quirky.
okay the twist at the end was something so far out of left field it came with whiplash. Genuinely 8 years of *that many* alts has got to be mentally exhausting if not damaging to some extent. I wouldn't be surprised if Averra had a light form of multi-personality disorder. I'm no expert and make no claim to understand the disorder, this just seems impossible to me otherwise. So many stories to track to maintain continuity. Did anyone ever dm these accounts? Form relationships and invite them to other servers? Can't wait for part 2, I want to see how far this goes. How deep does Averra's need to control a sim country go? What does he/she get out of this web?
hey i'm able to speak with experience on that front! (first off, notably, "multiple personality disorder" as a term hasn't been used by professionals for around forty years now; while the diagnosis labels that _could_ be used would be either dissociative identity disorder or otherwise specified dissociative disorder, if you don't want to apply an actual diagnosis to a stranger then you might want to use more general words like plurality, multiplicity, or being a system.) if this was actually an example of multiplicity, you'd expect the idiosyncrasies to be less of a thing, as often members of a system will specifically differentiate themselves by having a different typing style. it's not impossible that everyone involved would use the same specific emoticons, spelling mistakes, and unusual formatting of tone tags - just unlikely. the real point against this being an example of plurality would be the way all the accounts were created and logged into: if these were members of a system, they'd have showed up at their own times and made their accounts independently, rather than a persistent pattern of averra making a couple of accounts all at once every time he remembered to, and having them all join the server at the same time. also, like, system members have differing opinions, that's kind of the whole thing. if it were really a system voting in the polls, you'd expect their opinions to vary, and you honestly wouldn't expect all one hundred of them to be willing and interested to join the discord server in the first place. the "caliere was eerily calm while comforting averra while he broke down" _is_ something you might see in a system, because the separation of system members is so distinct that one can be drunk and then another switch in and be sober, and often a system member's "job" will be to keep things on lock and calm down another who is panicking, having a flashback, crying, etc. that's all i can really pass judgement on one way or the other - eight years is a long time to run a lot of alts, but it doesn't have to be a plural thing, just the outlet for some other variety of obsession...
@@ilexdiapasonDID is exceedingly rare if it is ever real at all and the language you are using seems to be from the Multiplicity subculture which is complete pseudoscience rubbish.
Incredibly unlikely, definitely disordered behavior, but DID and other dissociative disorders come with significant impairment to daily living, remembering that amount of information consistently with a dissociative disorder would be a nightmare, amnesia is a large component of the diagnosis of this family of disorders, with the exception of OSSD-1b, and some half existent diagnoses (they're slowly picking over this field of study and amending some things, so currently some diagnoses are living a sort of half life) and one of the few overt symptoms. It's a covert disorder to the highest degree. Many have limited internal awareness and can't force switches like they do in the movies. Rapid switching does not occur commonly in DID outside of highly stressful situations, and large systems are consistently the most unstable, a system might engage in weird behavior online occasionally, but eight years? Nah. Not without getting caught by another facet of their brain messing around and revealing themselves. I'd personally suspect Autism, very niche community, special interest in politics with a clearly impaired social ability, black and white thinking, strong sense of personal justice, intense need for control. Pretty textbook. Just a lonely megalomaniac.
@@__-tc3sr Actually, it's diagnosed in about 1.5% of the global population. It's just not all what you see in the movies all the time, 10 clear cut people with 100% amnesia. If your idea of DID is that dramatized thing, then sure, there aren't that many people like that around: but the definition as it is in the DSM allows for this many diagnosed people of varying degrees and presentation, and so 1.5% of the global population have DID, simple as that. Do you perhaps happen to be a psychiatrist? If not, I hope you will as we all should think twice before sending a dismissive and potentially hurtful comment to a random person whose real life and struggle you have very limited look into. Unrelated to replying to this person I don't think that the subject of this video sounds at all like something that a person with DID would do though.
Wonder if you remember Averra's Assembly of Regions in about 2019/20. His region Southfield was part of it.
@@thezipcreator Seconding this (speaking from experience)
@thezipcreator The modern term for Multiple Personality Disorder is Dissociative Identity Disorder. People with this disorder aren't "plural", they're people with DID. okay the twist at the end was something so far out of left field it came with whiplash.
What does he/she get out of this web?
definitely some kind of disorder
hey i'm able to speak with experience on that front!

Damn this was a good vid. As one of the people on that independence document it’s nice to see this get the attention is deserves.
A shame someone went through all that and crushed several tight knit communities just for some power on a roleaying website
A compelling narrative from a fandom I barely know anything about. Great work!
this is so well done!! and what an interesting story. the dedication it takes to have so many alt accounts is both impressive and terrifying.
This is so fun to watch. Like genuinely well done for making this because I learnt a lot of really interesting today :)
Thanks to youtube for recommending me this for reasons entirely unknown. This was one hell of a wild ride to go down while having absolutely no prior knowledge or context of these types of communities even existing.
This man just became his own private version of the CIA
Great video! Read the dossier but this is even better.
Interesting how this makes clear that we can be identified by our language use with a large enough dataset.
a trolligarch video in 2024? i never thought i would see the day
The Return of the King!
you were the 2nd comment
Never have I ever been so invested in something I just found out existed.
I have checked out the rest of your videos and they are all fantastic! I honestly hope that you release more in the future.
OH MY GOD IT'S TROLLIGARCH! i didn't know it was you. WELCOME BACKKKKk!!!!
I have no interest in NationStates or even government roleplay, but this video was very entertaining. I'm surprised I actually watched to the end, considering it's length. Very good job on the visuals and even better at story telling.
