Jay, I really appreciate you listing the shortcut keys you used on Sketchup. I'm new to using the program and understanding how "components" etc work and shortcuts instead of clicks is making my drawing time MUCH more efficient.
Wow! I stumbled across your channel the other day, explored several of your videos, checked out your website and now I see this. You are blowing me away. I really love how you have mastered Sketchup and have shared your tips on making it a productive tool. You have some great skills and I enjoy watching and learning. Thank you!
Jay these videos are a great help. I have been using sketchup for a few projects but never learned the shortcuts. Now that I am trying to get more into woodworking. These videos are much easier to learn from than trying to read through a list trying to find what each shortcut is.
Helpful as always Jay. Makes me realize I need way more practice with Sketchup but there is now amount of practice is going to make me as proficient as you and some others I have seen. Sketchup is a great tool for woodworking and carpentry construction.
Thanks for making these SketchUp videos Jay. I don't know how much extra effort there is for you to make these to go along with your project builds, but to me they are every bit as entertaining and educational. Thanks again!
7:45 is what I did for my crib, where I put slats in for the cage and filled in the grooves, between the slats, with spacers and surprisingly you can't see that I added the spacers. In other words it looks seamless. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Good vid Jay. Thanks. Another way to manage cramped dims (like the 1 1/2) is to right click on the dim, select Text Position, and make one of the choices to move the text outside of the dim arrows.
Great vid jay.... You always make stuff look so easy. That definitely would have taken me more than 13 min to model. Your woodworking and sketchup vids always give me ideas. It just takes me a lot of time to finish things due to 2 kids and the day job. keep it up man!!!! You inspire.....
SketchUp needs to add a new functionality: Associate a sound file with specific tools. That way, I can have Jay saying "P for PushPull" every time I use the push/pull tool.
I really like your SketchUp videos! Thanks to making this type of videos as well!! That would be nice to make a voice guidance with your voice in SketchUp :))
Another great instructional video. You are a natural teacher. Would it be possible to have you show how to set up the shortcut keys in a future video? Thanks Jay, Thumbs up.
Great tutorial. Right click on the text in the dimention, and you can select to position the number before or after the lines (instead of adding spaces).
lol i just turned your 13 min. video into 2 hours by starting, stopping....start, stop.. ... attempting to mimic the moves. (thank you for the verbal keystrokes) AWESOME. I'll get this one day
Always enjoy watching your SketchUp videos. I do pretty good with it but not near as fast. I just right click most of the time. Maybe I'll remember shortcuts as well as you do one day. Thanks for the learning session! Were you using ver. 8 in this video? Or is that Make? Don't remember "Scenes", "Layers", etc. off to the side like that. I like.
Hi Jay! Great Tutorial, thanks for teaching us Sketchup! Why dont you use the "edit" dropdown menu and select "delete guidelines" to make that simpler? You wouldn't have to click all guidelines to delete them and not even have to click in the component to delete a component guideline.. :) Greetings from Austria ;)
Hi Jay, thanks for this tutorial always amazed at how efficient and easy you make SketchUp look! Thanks a LOT. Do you have any idea as to when you will be doing a video on making this in the shop?
I'm tentatively back on my schedule so SketchUp videos are on Fridays and if the SketchUp video has a project in it the project will probably be in Sunday's video.
I'm working a TV stand, what is an efficient way to make miters on moldings/trim? I am able to do it but it is extremely time consuming making each miter. There has to be a better way. Great video, easy to follow along with your play by play and thorough instructions!
I don't make molding and trim work in individual pieces. I use the follow me tool to make the entire run of trim and just measure the long distances to determine how much I need.
+John Parker Select what you want to rotate, Q for rotate, position the cursor on the appropriate plane to rotate on (it will change colors based on what plane you will rotate on), click to start, drag in the direction, type the angle, press enter.
+Jay Bates Sounds simple ! But I have the same trouble. When I place the tool to my work piece it constantly wants to switch back and forth between the various planes.
+Vic Krue once you have the tool on the correct plane / orientation, you can press and hold the shift key to lock it to that reference. Makes life a lot easier.... ;^)
okay, let's put this to rest before it gets out of hand. first, and of the utmost importance. I have been watching Jays videos since the beginning. I have always and I do mean always found his videos to be very entertaining, very informative, and well done. in fact, I would say they are some of the very best produced in the makers world. no doubt reflected by his popularity. one can see this by just looking at the amount of subscribers he has. as you can read in my comment, I tried to use verbatim indicating that I was not knocking him or putting him down. I commented, he responded. I sincerely hope he wasn't offended and I take no offense from him as well. I will of course continue to follow J and subscribe because I truly enjoy his videos....... All of them. I was making a point perhaps in the wrong manner. when I go back and read my comments it does appear to be somewhat sarcastic. believe me I am NOT like that. J if that's the way you took it I totally understand, my apologies. I look forward to your future content as you posted, as always.
Good work! I remember having to learn SketechUp, after SoildWorks and AutoCAD. It was a challenge at that time--after working with SoildWorks for many years, I haven't tried SketechUp since. But you make it look easy. Are you working on the free version of it?
I apologize if you may have covered this in a previous video, but do you need to take the width of the blade into consideration when making a layout? As I am typing this, I may have just answered my own question (this is a coat rack not a rocket, so dimensions and tolerances aren't quite as crucial), but I am still interested in the response. Thank you for your time. Terrific video!
He did mention it on this video when he was doing the layout that there was plenty of room left over for all the saw kerfs. You do need to account for it but Jay does it almost unconsciously (lots of practice!)
+Jeff Phillips I just make sure that if I'm getting close I add up the cuts and multiply by 1/8" to see if I have room for the blade. There is no need to put the 1/8" blade kerf between every part. That's time consuming and confusing.
Hey Jay, in your layout do you consider the thickness of your saw blades since all are back to back to each other. Would it make sense to add spaces in between?
+melitamann1983 I do consider it but never add it between parts. It will get confusing that way. Just add up the saw cuts and multiply by 1/8". If you have enough room at the end of the board you will be fine.
Great project Jay. Thank you again. Please, consider trying to slow down. Because of your background with CAD, SketchUp is like second nature to you, but to the rest of us it is not. This shouldn't be a race, but sometimes watching your videos I feel like your competing against someone to finish first... not necessary. Again, great project. Regardless of what my comments may sound like to some, I look forward to each of your videos. Thanks man.
+Vic Krue I go fast on purpose. People learn the way they were taught. If you watch a snail pace tutorial you will learn to use the program at a snail pace.
Hi Jay, I was not referring to your SketchUp lesson in particular. You just speak so fast sometimes. Ask your wife about what I'm saying... she will know you better than anyone ( my wife knows me better than I know myself :-( ) I really love your tutorials and videos. The speed with which a person learns should not be as important as the depth of the lesson absorbed. I used to be the same way... in everything that I did, but eventually my best friends and family began telling me that I needed to slow down. After a few years I started to listen, and I'm glad I did. I'm now in my early fifties and I appreciate life at a slightly slower speed than Overdrive ! Just my humble opinion dude. Cheers.........
Thanks for this one. You teached me a lot. Once again. If i move from Japan to The US, would you consider giving woodworking And sketchup lesson ? I can pay with cheese. :)
I try to follow, to learn more about Sketchup and I understand you are not teaching Sketchup. However I still wish you talked slower to allow me to follow easier. I do repeat sections trying to get the steps you are using. ;}
First, this is not a knock... Remember when woodworking videos were well.... woodworking videos. love your stuff as well as others. But, it sure "wood" be nice if everyone "wood" remember that it's more about ........I think you get it. Not against tech, just over it. As are many others I talk with. Before people start getting on me, I had a New Hermes 3000LT that was capable of doing everything from sketching to carving to reverse engraving. It just seems that the more makers that "come by" tech layout and auto cutters, the more you want to look for more traditional woodworkers to watch. Just sayin, not hatin.
+Rag Tie I've been making SketchUp videos on and off for about 2 years now. I use it as a tool to design the "wood" projects. A ton of people provide feedback informing me that they found it valuable. I put "SketchUp" as the very first word in the titles to give you a heads up so if you don't like SketchUp you will know what it's about before you watch it. These videos are not in place of woodworking content. They are extra videos that I produce for free to help other people out. Don't want to watch SketchUp videos? Then don't.
+GoldenRetriever Abbie I learned SolidWorks first while in college. Completed my degree college and didn't have access to it anymore so I learned SketchUp. I really miss the mouse shortcuts in SolidWorks.
+Jay Bates the question I have is, next year I begin learning Matlab and solidworks. what would be a close free alternative to solidworks? I know it won't be the same, but I want to get the feel of 3d designing
That's not what I said. I said "it's already 1.5 and I want to go 5...so 3.5, enter" It was already 1.5" and I added 3.5" which takes it to 5" What I said was not 100% grammatically correct but if you follow along it should be understood.
Jay, I really appreciate you listing the shortcut keys you used on Sketchup. I'm new to using the program and understanding how "components" etc work and shortcuts instead of clicks is making my drawing time MUCH more efficient.
+Christopher Harpster Glad to hear that.

I really love how you have mastered Sketchup and have shared your tips on making it a productive tool. You have some great skills and I enjoy watching and learning. Thank you!
Thank you, Robert.
Jay these videos are a great help. I have been using sketchup for a few projects but never learned the shortcuts. Now that I am trying to get more into woodworking. These videos are much easier to learn from than trying to read through a list trying to find what each shortcut is.
I love how you fill in all the background behind your personal shortcuts and everthing. Such good stuff
Thank you for sharing and explaining your SketchUp woodworking workflow. It has helped me draw more efficiently. Really appreciate it!
I LOVE the woodworking how to sketchup videos!!!!!! Thank you!
Helpful as always Jay. Makes me realize I need way more practice with Sketchup but there is now amount of practice is going to make me as proficient as you and some others I have seen. Sketchup is a great tool for woodworking and carpentry construction.

+Pat F Glad to hear that. Thank you.
Very nice presentation. You have helped me lots with using sketchUp. Logical and efficient processing.
Thanks Jay.
I always learn something new with these videos. Thanks again, Jay!
I love your Sketchup videos. When I'm sketching my stuff I say the shortcuts to myself the same way you say them, thanks!
Using spaces to see the small dimensions. Why didn't I think of that!!!! Thanks Jay!
Great seeing you design it and build it. I learn a lot from the Sketchup videos alone.
Thanks Jay, you've given me an Idea for tidying up the cupboard where we keep our coats
Always something new to be learned with these videos - Looking forward to the build Jay
Thanks for these sketchup videos. It's really helpful to see sketchup manipulation from a woodworker's prospective. Keep up the good work ~
Love your SketchUp instructionals Jay, keep them coming. It would take me two days to do something like this without you.
7:45 is what I did for my crib, where I put slats in for the cage and filled in the grooves, between the slats, with spacers and surprisingly you can't see that I added the spacers. In other words it looks seamless. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Simple project, ideal for pocket holes, all parts can be attached from the back! The next month is my 'learn sketchup' time! :) Thanks Jay
Love the Sketchup videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them so informative.
Damn Jay. Awesome solution with the spaces for the dimensions when not visible. I've struggled with that forever. Thanks
Good vid Jay. Thanks. Another way to manage cramped dims (like the 1 1/2) is to right click on the dim, select Text Position, and make one of the choices to move the text outside of the dim arrows.
I like your SketchUp tutorials, every time something new to learn. :)
These sketch up videos are fantastic
Absolutely wonderful, It is very helpful how you talk through your shortcut keys. keep up the great work.
Great vid jay.... You always make stuff look so easy. That definitely would have taken me more than 13 min to model. Your woodworking and sketchup vids always give me ideas. It just takes me a lot of time to finish things due to 2 kids and the day job. keep it up man!!!! You inspire.....
To that I say "ALL RITE, ALL RITE, ALL RITE"
Thanks JAY you're the MAN!
I have downloaded SketchUp but haven't used it yet. It is very helpful to watch your films with your great commentary/
Thank You, I always get something out of your hard work.
Jay, another great Sketchup tutorial, keep them coming. Regards.
SketchUp needs to add a new functionality: Associate a sound file with specific tools. That way, I can have Jay saying "P for PushPull" every time I use the push/pull tool.
Great guide! You make it look sooo easy! Thank you.
your sketch up videos make me a better person. lol.
yes! nice share Jay, i have an older version of sketchup when it was freeware. Going to give it another shot after watching this vid!
Awesome Lesson Jay. Keep em coming
Thanks again Jay. Just a suggestion about the project. You could round over those small blue parts and make a mortises to fit them into the board.
Good suggestion.
Im determined to get to gain more skill with sketchUp. You make it look so easy.
I really like your SketchUp videos! Thanks to making this type of videos as well!!
That would be nice to make a voice guidance with your voice in SketchUp :))
Watching you use sketchup makes me realize that I need practice. That model would have taken me a full day. lol
Jay, yet another great Sketchup video. I learn something every time you post one. Thanks. Paul / paulsmessyworkshop
Another great instructional video. You are a natural teacher. Would it be possible to have you show how to set up the shortcut keys in a future video? Thanks Jay, Thumbs up.
I've already made a video on that a couple years ago: ruclips.net/video/UyVr-o3q3pE/видео.html
+Jay Bates I missed that one going to view it right now. Thanks
Great tutorial. Right click on the text in the dimention, and you can select to position the number before or after the lines (instead of adding spaces).
+Peter G I never knew that. Thanks for teaching me something.
lol i just turned your 13 min. video into 2 hours by starting, stopping....start, stop.. ... attempting to mimic the moves. (thank you for the verbal keystrokes) AWESOME. I'll get this one day
+Benjamin DeBellis You can do it!
60fps? MY CINEMATIC VISION!
Greetings from Austria ;)
Thanks Jay!
I use an addin called comp2scene to breakout the various parts of a project. You should look into that.
I'm working a TV stand, what is an efficient way to make miters on moldings/trim? I am able to do it but it is extremely time consuming making each miter. There has to be a better way.

Google should be paying you a teachers salary! Beginner at SketchUp but learning faster thanks to your videos.. Good stuff!
+Richard Wisner Glad to hear that :)
How the hell do you use the rotate tool so effectively?
I have a helluva time with that tool..never wants to cooperate
Great Video.
+John Parker Select what you want to rotate, Q for rotate, position the cursor on the appropriate plane to rotate on (it will change colors based on what plane you will rotate on), click to start, drag in the direction, type the angle, press enter.

+David Bishop Open Broadcaster Software. It's free.
Thank you. Ive checked it out. You do an awesome job on all your videos. !!
Hay Jay.Where can I get sketchup at for my tablet samsung galaxy Tab E?
paint it purple! paint it purple! ......haha...great video again.
Great project Jay. Thank you again.

I like cheese.
+Jay Bates I take this as a Yes. :)
+Lamialle Gerald taught*
+Karaon Thanks.
Jay..... i'm wondering how you learnt this program is there a tutorial or did you just learn by mistakes?
+J Rowe I taught myself. I also have a bunch of videos showing how to use the program here: jayscustomcreations.com/sketchup/
+Jay Bates That's cool.... Hoping I don't get too frustrated using it lol
Sketch up, level Jedi.
When he was making the second rail my video would start over but the sound would keep going. Did anyone else have this problem?
I try to follow, to learn more about Sketchup and I understand you are not teaching Sketchup. However I still wish you talked slower to allow me to follow easier. I do repeat sections trying to get the steps you are using. ;}
I've got a lot of videos, some slower, on my website here: jayscustomcreations.com/sketchup/
Thanks
I have tried to use Sketchup and just cannot figure it out.
This might help: jayscustomcreations.com/sketchup/
+Jay Bates Wow! I appreciate your interest in my troubles. Merry Christmas!
I find I talk to myself when I'm using Sketchup. "Tripple click, g for component, enter"

do you know how to use solidworks?

how are you doing the math .. you said 3.5 = 5 inches how is that ... is there a web site that show's you the math
That's not what I said. I said "it's already 1.5 and I want to go 5...so 3.5, enter" It was already 1.5" and I added 3.5" which takes it to 5" What I said was not 100% grammatically correct but if you follow along it should be understood.
Wow.......ok Jay. Sorry.
+Rag Tie No need to be sorry. You had an opinion, I responded with mine. Nothing more than conversation :) Have a good day.
