Maybe the purpose of trees was to hold the upper surface of the earth together during earthquakes, floods, continent shift etc. Imagine if the majority of the earth’s surface was covered by an intertwined network of tree roots, maybe not right next to each other but close enough so that the roots can intertwine. Wouldn’t that stabilize the crust of the earth during these kind of events? Wouldn’t a huge ancient forest survive a massive earthquake better than ungrounded soil? Wouldn’t it take a long time to get forests that mature so shouldn’t we be starting now to figure out how we would help it along? To clarify, it would be the interlocking of the roots that would make this work, isolated trees probably can’t make a big difference.

    Never work against the pattern/material/structure/...
The greatest artists, politicians, mathematicians and the smartest people that ever walked on this planet(or the moon), all had been touched by this Nature's principle.
Especially when you'd want to "mani-pulate" the context.
Speaking about patterns, Geoff can you PLEASE do a section on "weed"- plants, that is everything that's being sprayed on with RoundUp because it's "weed"...? Or how to get rid of unwanted plants in your garden/city(/continent), but at the same time suggesting it in "Nature's language/tongue"?
"Water chooses the easiest way" A wise man said.
"So the truth must be simple" Replied a simple man.

as brilliant and eye opening as the core model pattern part (from ~19 minutes) was, from perspectives of artistic imagery, to various cultural uses (especially oriented with Nature), to our own anatomy. however, around 26 minutes in, i got lost with mr. lawton trying to represent nutrient exchanges in trees by connecting it with the infinity pattern that i think could be misleading/confusing like (more subjective) art or poetry.. but hey, could also be slightly more inspirational to override that bit of confusion :)
to continue on a + note tho, i like how this lecture flowed in a "full circle" form from (@ 2:08) where he defines pattern as... (@ ~28 minutes)... interactions at THE EDGES, right? / you know?
i'd like to think that this type of education for young people today is similar to my.. math & science-like recognitions as a student (which'd then have us hope to be like john nash in the movie "a beautiful mind")... and so, maybe they'd (hope to) be better observers of Nature / our environment.. to see the world from such a unique (and needed) perspective... whoa!

I agree that this is interesting but I don't see how having a knowledge or even an understanding of patterns is useful. Since permaculture is so much about design, how is it good to design a space, be it a home, a garden, or a piece of land, to follow one or more of these patterns? How is it good to design in this way, or better than designing in a square or rectangular pattern? I'll say that for home and garden designs, I really don't like conventional square and rectangular designs. My only question is ... WHY design a space following these patterns?
    :)

    • @wilsonlubeck5792
      @wilsonlubeck5792 7 лет назад +7

      Hi troy,
Pattern is the most important (in my humble opinion) aspect in the permaculture design process. Yes, permaculture is about design, but what kind of design? Where are the designs coming from?....natural design, allowing the flow of nature to guide the hands of creation to essentially create an ecosystem that benefits you by providing food, material, shelter, etc. and benefiting the land by regenerating/creating soil, distributing nutrients, providing shelter for native animals and plants alike, etc. When in nature observing pattern, one can objectively observe the evident patterns that are abundant and infinite. To create the most efficient and beneficial systems, we must design with nature (and the patterns that exist within it, or rather, the pattern that is nature itself), as the patterns in nature are the pinnacle of efficient networking and cycling.
At the end of this lecture, Geoff brings up the torus, and this is an incredibly important pattern abundant in the universe. The torus can essentially be expressed as the perfectly balanced, efficient cycling of energy. While applying the literal, physical patterns into your specific site is important, it is equally as important to keep in mind that the goal of permaculture is to create the torus :-)

You lost me during the tesselation "trip". I think you put too much into the patterns. Also mixing in cycles into the pattern, is not the best for the argumentation of your case.
Yes, there's patterns that repeat themselfs through the universe, are mostly a result of the physics. Nothing more. Seeing wage similaritys, and claiming it to be the same, is not wise. To copy patterns in our construction can be very sesible, as long as it's done correctly and with understanding. I highly preciate the work you do (no thumbs down), but this lecture didn't keep the high quality as expected.

@@manjichromagnon5480 it's not lost on me. The fact is the masses exist and need to understand. The existance of the masses & their behaviour breaks the natural balance of things. The masses are conditoned by nature and human systems to be attracted by simplicity. This condition gives us great advantage however leaves us vulnerable. It is a contradiction. Natures intent is for us to find a better way. The entities you mention, and others, gave us our simple follies to which we devote our precious time and energies. The escape, the way out, the better way of existing, from practices such as described in this video, I believe, should be presented more simply for the uptake of the masses, so as to render our current shepards impotent and irrelevant.

To be bigger and stronger, eat more, exercise more. To grow your business consume more and produce more. In finance it follows that assets and expenses are debits, income and liabilities and credits, that is the same pattern. What goes in must go out, the limiting factor is retention capacity. That is why water retention and soil structure is key to all plant life. The soil structure improves water retention allowing plant growth. As a side note plant roots touch each other and can draw water and neutrients from adjacent roots, therefore close planting of varied crops improves survival as different neutrients are drawn and encourage growth in newer plants fueling and increasing the root systems.
Learning is retained through recollection, application requires recollection, difficulties are encountered through application and require investigation which is new learning and this requires recollection and future application. The same pattern. Life is funny that way.

@just another human the book sounds like he is speaking it but that is how they should be, it doesn't make it harder to understand, depends on where you are when starting it, i was already down that path but he fills in aload of blanks, the secret to turning base metals into gold is in THAT BOOK. do you believe his consciousness was taken to another place when he was in that coma? he was just a simple farmer before after all, he recieved cosmic knowledge from somewhere, how many people wonder the secrets to the unverse? it's all explained in that book.
