Respected the history, just gorgeous. Grade II Star listing, yet the UK doesn't see how this SAVES the history of the country by awarding grants to SAVE these building/homes, I'll never understand. Good grief, had to wait 2 years to get the approval of the planning commission. 4 yrs. just to get to the roofing. Thank goodness Jude had her cousin for the restoration.
The most beautiful restoration Love all the design, kitchen, furnishings, great style and warmth. She is such a lovely woman with a beautiful personality.
A wonderful outcome and I am particularly impressed with how the builders managed to hide the modern timber roof supports and just allow the old timbers to show. I didn't like the kitchen much and it needs a Rayburn to provide heat during the autumn and winter. She was lucky to have a cousin who is a first class restorer BUT good on her for sticking to her vision.
I think it would be wonderful if the conservation society would offer grants or some type of financial help to those who are doing these beautiful restorations! Love all the craftsmanship that went into this project.💛😊👍
I thought that I have seen all of the Restoration Man episodes, as well as his other shows, but found this one that I had missed and it's a definite favorite! I Love that she kept it open and true to its original use, and I love that she's focused and determined and an overall hard as*. It was really awesome to see this story unfold from my living room here in Utah. This is my all time all-time favorite show and I hope that Lockdown doesn't stop his production.
To Cousin Jason....SUPREME KUDOS!!!! Her money financed it yes, but his dedication and love is what made it a reality!!!!! GOD LOVE YOU MAN FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE DEDICATION!!!!
I love the way how they made internal design, using soft colors beige, all types of brown and grey and steel plus the space talk by itself. Such a beautiful house, well done
Amazing! I love that she maintained the beautiful exposed timbers and actual architectural structure of this beautiful historic building! Fantastic job...and admirable attitude throughout the whole long restoration project! I particularly love that tile roof!☺
Stunning. Totally. And what a contribution to her community to save this barn. My only slight reservation has to do with heating those huge spans but aesthetically they are flawless.
WalkOn Bye Freshly divorced? Doubt it-she had been working on that project for over 4 years. You don’t do that when you are in the middle of a divorce. Besides, she could be a widow. I have known several woman that have been widowed with small children from their early 20’s through into their 40’s. It still very much happens.
I think that the Preservation Authorities that seem to have such demands on people trying to keep some form of authenticity whilst renovating should be more than happy that people are prepared to do something to save these structures rather than letting them fall down ...and therefore relax red tape.
I love her optimism and she's a lovely woman❣ End result of this massive undertaking = BREATHTAKINGLY STUNNING!! She'll absolutely make some amazing memories with her boys in this wonderful home. ❤👏❤
Very nice place! Amazing what can be done with a 500,000-pound budget on top of whatever it took to buy the place. I'd hate to have to dust the timbers and wash the windows, though. For me, my little 860 square-foot Mexican-ish 1975 condo is just right. Fortunately for my budget, I actually like cozy places. But I wish the homeowner all the best. It was a labor of love, and it worked out well.
What an extraordinary job!!!! I loved watching the craftmenship and how everyone was restoring the Essex barn and how brave the owner is. Beautiful job all of you.😍😘😘🤗🤗🤗🤗
I think I would have chosen a smaller restoration project to get the boys in a home much sooner. Four years is a long time for a child to wait. The building is lovely but does not feel like a home. It's lacks warmth. And, just think of the heating and cooling bills! Yikes!
UNCLEDOUG SAYS YOU DO GOOD WORK !!! I TOOK ON A 4000 Sq Ft LOG CABIN NEVER DONE ANY THING LIKE THIS AND IT WAS A BEAR / OR LOTS OF BEER !!!!! ??? !! BUT IF I HAD NOT HAD MY FRIENDS TO HELP ME I WOULD STILL BUILDING 20 YEARS LATER !!!
That's what I was thinking! I hope she carried on with the same theme. Mind you, there would have to be more waterproof tile and flooring laid on. Especially in the boys' bath.
Beautiful restoration! As an American of Irish descent and daughter of an architect/carpenter/contractor, I love the idea of restoring one of these lovely old buildings in my ancestral home of the UK. It is absolutely amazing to me these buildings are sometimes older than the US. I'm surprised none of the builds have taken advantage of epoxies, etc to stabilize existing ancient timbers rather than splicing/sistering new wood. Some of the new methods would save original wood.
I love the fact that she didn't get too modern with the furnishings. I always see these renovations of bedrooms with lots of daylight streaming in or windows where the rest of the town's people can see in. Once the light comes in I would be awake and I would be paranoid that people could see into my bedroom! I also agree with the comment about these restoration society's. There should be some funding coming from them or keep your mouth's shut. Either save the buildings with financial aid or take them down.
"Despite having family on board, this is a really difficult restoration project." He says. "Where it's virtually impossible to predict the build costs. With the timber frame in such a fragile state, it remains to be seen if this barn can be converted into a 21st Century family home." Judging by the fact that this episode was green-lit, recorded, produced and broadcast lol I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's pretty safe to assume it got done. I'll come back after watching to make any necessary edits to that statement lol stand by! 😂 Edit; "Hell or high water," lol she got it done. 👍
I was wondering how she was going to manage that huge door opening. Brilliant. All glass. Oversized doors. I love it. The other brilliant fix was showing the old, damaged roof beams with the new support for the heavy roof out of sight. Job done excellently.
Absolutely beautiful restoration! Lovely to be able to view; however, I would NOT enjoy living there. As much as I truly do appreciate the great job done with it (inside & out), it would be just too cavernous for this gal.
Beautifully done...although watching in 2022, you're immediately wondering how much it costs to heat this massive space. Luckily Jude seems more than capable of coming up with cash. Daring, striking build.
I would love to know how efficient these barns and mansions are to heat. That was the idea of 20th century drop ceilings. It kept the heat down. How in the world does heating comfort work in such high ceilings? I also feel sorry for these kids. They will grow up in a few short years and feel challenged to have a space just like this for their home.
Beautiful job. I'd rather have a two-storey open building but if they like the three-storey height, bravo. I suspect she's installed under-floor heat because the floors look like poured concrete.
Because wood, depending on its grain, or whether the heart is used will, dry, twist, or bow accordingly, and with such a huge expanse of wood over a huge area, one can expect all kinds of different, “torturous” movement over time. This makes perfect sense and becomes the ultimate challenge centuries later to correct it. It takes a great deal of knowledge to remedy the multiple variants in order to end up with a completely functional while harmonious and beautiful end result! Only a master woodworker could do the work judiciously to bring all the variable wood elements together. Of course I am simplifying the process but in reality, it will take an enormous amount of knowledge and experience to bring about the best structural result! NO EASY TASK NO MATTER HOW ONE LOOKS AT IT!!! ALL OF MY ADMIRATION is given to each of these men who worked so diligently to to make everything right!!! ALL KUDOS SHOULD GO TO HER AMAZING COUSIN, WHO CLEARLY KNEW WHAT THE TASK AHEAD OF HIM WAS...HE ABSOLUTELY TRANSFORMED, IN THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY POSSIBLE, THIS VAST BARN, IN ORDER TO NIT ONLY SAVE IT BUT FOR IT TO BE A MONUMENTALLY INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE, FOR ALL PURPOSES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME!!! THIS MAN DESERVES A MEDAL FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK!!!! What a superb achievement for him and in his name!!!! He is a Master builder in his own right!!!!
Jude is a wonderful example of a strong woman who isn't afraid to be feminine. I'll bet that had a lot to do with with why the build using family worked out...without the drama! IMHO, the interior was too big. The kitchen was impractical and the energy efficiency is never addressed openly. I didn't see solar panels. Fantastic episode though...I enjoyed it very much!🌻
Ye Gods! Not even 10 minutes in, and I'm going "Only 500000.00 pounds?!?!?!?!? I can see Kevin McCloud shaking his head with a horrified look on his face. That wondrous old pile will take MUCH more than that. It's worth doing well, as it's a living piece of local history and has been shamefully let go. It will make a wonderful home for two boys to put down roots in. All the local kids will swarm there. Well, I stand corrected!! Seems like the worst hold up was waiting for the go ahead from the historical building people. Her cousin obviously has a genuinely talented and committed group working with him. They did that barn justice. The old elements are given pride of place, with the modern era gently laid underneath. I hope that crew is willing to take on apprentices, because their skills are rare and necessary. The kitchen is exactly what the space needed. Everything kept below the counter line, exposing all the windows and more old beams. That kitchen could be used for catering functions, because of all the prep space. This barn will be hosting many a large festive party. The boys will love living there, with their mother working from home and being able to have all their "mates" in for gaming and goofing around. The space! A black lab will finish things off nicely.
Having £500,000 renovation budget certainly helped a long way to make the build a success her cousin is the real restorative man hero as well besides George Clark lol 😄 i hope the chap got his photo in the memento book as well? Cos if it wasn’t that will be a real injustice cos the build was largely due to his expertise 👍🏻
God bless your heart for restoring this beautiful piece of history... what a great job you all accomplished. I had a question about the roof... if there was a hard rain with wind, do these types of shingles/slates do a good job of keeping the rain out? Gary from America. ps I live in a country school house that I made into a home...
As I understand it, the weight and shape of those clay tiles ( a Roman idea by the way) keeps the wind and rain out. Also in the rebuild of the roof the team carefully fitted in what looked like weather proof thick insulation pieces. Those tiles are madly durable. Some of them are from the original 1600s first build. I guess over time some of them may blow off, if there is a truly BAD storm. But regular roofing tiles will too. I do think reusing old historic buildings is a good idea. A lot of older buildings were constructed by very smart builders, and can keep going for generations. I say let's take advantage of that, and show appreciation for those bygone crafts people.
I would only doing this when i was sure that i had enough money together to realize it all. And without a bank. Many people go broke on an old house, ship or a young wife, then all can imagine.
How she heated the place economically using in The Panasonic Aquarea T-Cap was the ideal solution for such a large renovation project, as the system provides a reliable and constant nominal capacity output and excellent energy rating with a COP of 5.08. Magnificent job of saving an important building and making it something spectacular.
This is the second time I've watched this and it is still my favorite barn restoration. Simply fantastic 👏 👌 😀 👍 🙌!
Jude and her cousin, and his team, have produced something truly remarkable. May she and her boys have many happy years there.
this has been one of my most favorite restorations! Not to mention the lovely, genuinely nice home owner! the best of luck to her and her sons :-)
The most beautiful restoration Love all the design, kitchen, furnishings, great style and warmth. She is such a lovely woman with a beautiful personality.

brilliant idea of inserting those 5x 5 inch timbers in the roof structure

Me, too! 😊 And the outside covering!💛
Absolutely stunning restoration! I am blown away. Many happy years to Jude and her sons!
I just want to add a swing... and a zip line from the balcony to the kitchen! As a kid at heart, I would then LOVE this house like crazy!
I love the fact that the centuries old timbers are showing, yet it is finished.
She knocked this out of the park, stunning.
wow, so fantastic! I'm glad she didn't put circular walls and spiral staircases in it. This is so much better.
Job well done. A fantastic combination of what was reasonably salvageable shored up by modern technology. Love the creams inside .
Stunning. Totally. And what a contribution to her community to save this barn. My only slight reservation has to do with heating those huge spans but aesthetically they are flawless.
What a great project, and Jude is an amazing young woman, tough, determined, and beautiful.
Jeff DeWitt and freshly divorced. Lol.
Jeff and Walk Yes, she is an Amazing woman!! This also shows that a single Mum can achieve anything!!!
WalkOn Bye Freshly divorced? Doubt it-she had been working on that project for over 4 years. You don’t do that when you are in the middle of a divorce. Besides, she could be a widow. Right! It's a shame these builds grind to a halt while the powers that be make decisions.

Well said 👍🏻

Magnificent! Did I miss the boys' rooms? This was such a pleasure to watch, and no absolute agonizing about the finances.
By far one of my favourites in this series. Makes motivated for my little project!
What a beautiful restoration.. Hat,s off to the carpenters.
What an extraordinary job!!!!
I loved watching the craftmenship and how everyone was restoring the Essex barn and how brave the owner is. Beautiful job all of you.😍😘😘🤗🤗🤗🤗
This is just stunning! I would love to live a barn conversion.
I LOVE the way she did this! It's just gorgeous! 😊😊😊
What a beautiful restoration and I like her pleasing personality!
Wow. What an accomplished woman. She did a fantastic job.
Hier fehlt noch eine Schaukel vom höchsten Balken für die ganze Familie 😊 so ein wunderschönes Gebäude ❤
It's beautiful, but all I can think, how cold it must be in winter time :S
Amazing job. Well done. I didn't think it would turn out to be this extraordinary. Congratulations.
Beautiful! What a nice family June!

jukes243 I think it’s incredible and homely - depends on your taste
Wonderful young gentlemen add the most precious addition.

One of the most beautiful homes that I've ever seen in my life! I would have like to see what she did with the bathrooms.
That's what I was thinking! I hope she carried on with the same theme. Mind you, there would have to be more waterproof tile and flooring laid on. Especially in the boys' bath.
She is such a great personality and inspiring person. But he is also great. Supporting her.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!

STUNNING!!! ... and for once the lady of the house did not fall pregnant while the renovation was underway! :-)

Joy is such a lovely girl! All the best to her and the boys+ dog!

It nice that she didn't give up on such a huge undertaking. Great job.
One of the best Ive seen!!! Except for those tacky gold sequin pillow cases
Beautiful job. I'd rather have a two-storey open building but if they like the three-storey height, bravo. I suspect she's installed under-floor heat because the floors look like poured concrete.
This single mom had a dream and made it a reality.
Amazing, not so? Such an incredibly brave woman. 🤍
Congratulation! Great Work! Amazing...Nothing is impossible with Faith..

Fantastic episode though...I enjoyed it very much!🌻
Every one of these restoration videos: "when do you think you'll be in?"
"we want to be in by Christmas."
I know! I wish they could just enjoy the build a lot more instead of stressing so much!
And don’t forget the accidental baby. Although not in this episode, I always keep my bingo card ready.
How is it heated? I don't see any duct work, boiler or radiators or any chimneys.
No kidding! No mention of heat source or how difficult it must be to circulate the air for heating or cooling.
@Adam Grzybek , that's the fireplace of a sample house that George took the mother in as an idea of how to work on the interior.
In a word, "Stunning." CMJ

Amazing! Best restoration yet.
Love it, but how do you heat this beast in winter?
Absolutely amazing Oooo love it!!!
It’s amazing, but it’s to big and a night mare to control temperature and the cost😳maybe two families

I didn't see any heating system. It must be freezing with no ceilings to hold the heat.

Awesome performance!!! Loved it!
What a lovely place to make ones home
Absolutely beautiful
It's marvelously restored love it
I like that barn. Nice!
Great episode, second only to the one with the lady with the barge in Cornwall.
Neat to learn at age 60 where the word "threshold" came from.
Those two def banged.
Many times over 4 years. Why not.
How do u heat such a space
Did George and Jude end up together?!?! There certainly was chemistry there!❤️
This is the best!
How much will that barn cost to heat each month?
Did I miss something here, where are the bedrooms for her handsome boys? Beautiful home!

Sandra, thanks for your reply. I totally agree. These ancient barns and buildings are so beautiful and worth restoring.
Is it just me or do the boys look unhappy? Beautiful home.
How do you know that? I did wonder about their dad.
I saw that too, but maybe they just didn’t like having a camera stuck in their faces.
She's an amazing woman!
Stunning!!
Amazing! Well done!
Can someone explain what they used in between the spaces in the roof tiles to prevent rain draining through ?
I would only doing this when i was sure that i had enough money together to realize it all. And without a bank. Many people go broke on an old house, ship or a young wife, then all can imagine.
I've never seen George visit a site so many times....
Gorgeous.
Best one ever !
fanstastic project
Wouldn't like to pay the heating bill…..
Ceiling fans help a good bit.
nice job I have to convert cheese factory to a house
I sure hope she heats with solar but beautiful to look at anyway

YOU GUYS DO GOOD
shouldn't they have placed a layer of tyvek or similar bellow the roof tilles?
Amazing
