It's funny how Michael Keaton mentions the Oscars during this interview for Night Shift since I've always held the belief that he deserved one for that scene in it where he talks about his dad and mom. It's heartbreaking and brilliant acting. It's only one minute long and it's perfect. One hour and 5 minutes into the movie. Of course he's amazingly funny in the entire film too.
The Bazooke Joe bit in the beginning was killer. Keaton, as usual, is naturally funny and Dave always gave a wide berth when he sensed a bit was coming.
Not to many remember the wild and crazy young Michael Keaton. Goofy and funny, his Night Shift role was him in a nutshell at this time. Mr. Mom really slowed him down and started his big movie career that was more serious after a while.
I was lucky enough to see Night Shift in the theater, I remember the crowd laughed their asses off. No idea how many times I've seen it but it's easily one of my favorite movies of all time!
He definitely ripped a few lines of that nose candy before he walked out there 😂 damn he’s funny though can’t help but laugh while watching him. No wonder the 80s movies were so wild funny and uninhibited. Everyone is so uptight now
First of all, Michael Keaton is the best. Second, when you watch the old clips of Dave you can really see how he grew into the job of interviewing people, which is really the hardest part of the job. Here's Michael Keaton, who was a friend of Dave's, they had work together on a variety show. Yet, when he takes over the interview to do his bazooka Joe joke you can sense that Dave is just waiting so he can say the next thing he has queued up in his head that he has to say. Flash forward to the end of his career and someone like Norm McDonald would come on the show and Dave would just be totally relaxed and fine with whatever Norm would do and trust himself to make the segment go well. It takes years to develop that sort of confidence. That's why Stephen Colbert is the best late night interviewer right now. He had so many years of previous experience interviewing people. I have some experience with interviewing people on camera so I'm probably more tuned to it than most.
I've always thought of Keaton as being a great actor, but it's interesting to think of him as being referred to as a comedian! I know him from Batman, Spotlight, Birdman etc.
I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago. Still stands up. Best throwaway line imo was when they're fighting and Keaton goes "Chuck, I'm wearing all white!"
I just watched Night Shift yesterday on RUclips. It was just as funny as i remembered. I have been a fan of Keaton since I say that movie as a kid in the early 80's. He and Henry Winkler are just great in it

Spot on.
One of his and Winkler’s most UNDERRATED MOVIES!
I know that movie inside and out and that particular scene really stands out.
Pizza squirrel, 30 years before pizza rat
I'm on a Keaton rabbit hole, there's so many movies he's in that I haven't seen yet. Gotta start watching them soon.
This must have been his first appearance on the show--no wonder Letterman had him back so often.
Also, they were buddies from the Mary Tyler Moore variety show from 3 summers earlier.
ah the cocaine days.................... I rememebr them well

He used to do stand up waaay back in the day, and used to do this routine a lot. I saw a video of it about 9 years ago

He's brazenly and shamelessly talented!
Keep me askin' why I can't be satisfied with most of the today actors... the problem it's the comparison!
He's just like his character, Bill. The movie is excellent.
Just watched night shift just the other day...I liked it as a kid, now that I'm 48, I still like it today....it's an 80s flick....
The last line cracks me up....."It's a revolution here, Honey". lol

He seems a little…..wired. It was the 80’s…
Michael, sit up. Haw, haw, haw!
Night Shift is one of the funniest movies ever, and Keaton stole it. He as a riot.

It didn't seem to occur to them that Dave might host the Oscars someday.
Nice
Ain't he glad Report to Murphy didn't survive. It allowed him a minor film career 😁.
Jerry Seinfeld owes you Michael👍
A show about nothing 😂😂😂
Mort wears the turtleneck, not Bazooka Joe. A true Mortarian would know this.
Same phenomenon of people thinking Mushmouth on Fat Albert wears the cap with the eyeholes in it, when it's really Donald.
To be fair, I would be surprised if anyone even remembers Bazooka Joe at all.
Love Michael LOVE Nightshift!
Ahhh...the '80's and the powdered doughnuts
B JUICE B JUICE 2 . THIS SEPT. 2024. STOKED. Mike is the man.
❤
This is one of the funniest interviews ever broadcast on Letterman.
