Fantano’s Kendrick Lamar Reviews: To Pimp A Butterfly: 10/10 Good Kid, m.A.A.d city: 9/10 Untitled Unmastered: 8/10 Section.80: 8/10 Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers: 8/10 DAMN: 7/10 Black Panther (Compilation): 6/10
@@MrJoao678 oh man... I'd love it if it actually was ordered by year but it isn't. However Anthony DID call Kendrick the n-word in this review so that's that.
Kendrick Lamar = 7 Lil Pump = 7 Therefore, Lil Pump = Kendrick Lamar Since Kendrick Lamar = 10 Therefore, Lil Pump = 10 Therefore Lil Pump is one of the greatest rappers of all time
Jesus fucking christ... Look, I'll grant that people have different tastes, obviously, and people have different takes on music. But why are you against people changing their opinions when hearing other people's reasoning? Jesus fuck is that backwards. There are WRONG opinions that are obtained by shit reasoning, so if you find someone's reasons for why they have an opinion, and you find it is valid and sound, you should agree with it.
What do you mean 'changing my mind'? My dude, listen to the album. Get a general feel for it, and create an opinion on it. Listen to Fantano's take on it, and compare your opinions. Is everything Fantano says sound? Just because he's an intelligent critic who sounds like he knows what he's talking about doesn't mean he doesn't make mistakes, or that his opinion is the most reasonable. ACTUALLY LISTEN TO HIM instead of making up a belief and stubbornly clinging to it and ignoring what others say (not particularly directed towards you but for other people here), or immediately changing your opinion because a critic sounds smarter and says so and so. Not only that, even if a critic reviews an album harshly, you can still love an album for other reasons, like sentimental value. For example, Anthony trashes J.Cole all the time (and I'm gonna be honest, I share some of his feelings), but I still love Cole's tracks and albums because of the experience they've provided me, even if they're not the most professionally and artistically put together pieces of work.
KENDRICK'S FATHER BEING SHOT WOULD NOT HAVE LED TO KENDRICK NOT BEING BORN. HE SAYS "COULD HAVE GROWN UP WITHOUT A FATHER." IT WOULD HAVE LED TO KENDRICK BECOMING THE FATHERLESS RAPPER AKA KUNG FU KENNY. In my opinion if you play this album backwards (the DJ says "WE GON PLAY IT IN REVERSE on Duckworth) it tells a different story. EDIT: that's where i feel like Humble gets its additional meaning. In itself it has nothing deep but if you view it as the alternate reality kendrick that would have existed if his dad didn't then it becomes more interesting. The "all over the place" sound is because he's one rapper half the time and the other rapper the other half of the time. BLOOD and DUCKWORTH are interchangeable intros and outros. I think it's called "Damn." Cause he's realizing the butterfly effect thing and how that small thing at KFC put him where he is now.
i am. BLOWN away by the fact that he thought kendrick agreed with carl’s voicemail and that’s why he put it on FEAR. like why would kendrick make a whole track about the various ways fear has impacted his life and Black people’s lives as a whole then be like “by the way i think racism is our fault because we upset god.” maybe it’s just me but the voicemail was very clearly not presented as a positive thing or something he agreed with. he played the whole thing without interrupting it to show how deeply the fearmongering of the catholic church had affected his cousin, to the extent that he would call his cousin who was struggling to leave this drawn out raving voicemail about how their people’s suffering was their own fault. it was an example of someone whose life is controlled by fear. maybe i’m wrong or maybe you just need to be raised catholic (or similar religions mb) to understand idk lmao
i aint even gonna check the description -- jus gone sit back and enjoy the whole review knowin that this moment of pure bliss couldve never happened had anthony shot ducky
@Shadow that’s what needle drop fans are dude. If he doesn’t like a album they won’t like it. If he likes a album they will like it. Imagine if he gave albums like to pimp a butterfly a not good then it wouldn’t have been as appreciated as it is. All they do is D ride it’s funny watching them argue
@@goodguysystem9324 I've seen you everywhere, you really have a hard time accepting the fact that people can agree with his opinion or disagree with his opinion. According to you, agreeing with his opinion makes you a 'd rider'
To be fair, he is rating the albums based off what they are trying to be, not compared to each other. Lil Pump is ignorant, so he rates him like that. Kendrick is conscious, so he rates him like that. They're definitely trying to do different things.
Kinda reminds me of thatistheplan though actually. However when people say he looks like Cal Chuchesta, they are wrong. Melon and Cal are clearly two different people
I've come back here to say this: this review is 22 minutes long. This is what makes Anthony such a fantastic reviewer. Even though many may not agree with a 7, he's given us a deconstruction of the album and an amazing review to explain it all.
I'm not into much current rap/hip hop ( I love old school rap) but Kendrick is the exception. I think he's one of if not the most talented and influential rappers out here today and stands out head and shoulders among his peers. Kendrick is like the Tupac of his generation.
shouldn't really look at it from a numerical perspective, seeing as he says 'I'm feeling', so its more to give a rough estimate as to how much he enjoyed it. Also waka 1.5 was pretty great, still waiting on 2.0 :(
But isn't the "Deutoronomy reference" the whole point? That despite creating TPAB Kendrick is still consumed by the self hatred propagated by Fox News, and even his own Christian guilt and the self-hatred that the Bible itself can instil. This whole album is a deliberate juxtaposition of TPAB. DAMN. is drawn from some of the very images explored on TPAB 'He knows the bible too' and 'the hypocrite.' TPAB is about becoming something beautiful. DAMN. is about exploring Kendrick's uglyness. Each one of Kentdrick's albums often respond to the conceit of the prior album. GKMC is about escaping your environment. TPAB is about returning home and seeing the beauty in your environment, and the beauty in himself as a black man. DAMN. is him once again wrestling with self-hatred. He is still the "hypocrite" from The Blacker the Berry, despite attempting to raise himself and his community with the conscious pro-black themes on TPAB. No where is this more evident than on XXX where a friend from his community turns to him for his conscious spiritual outlook and he reveals his darker side. I could go on and on, but as you say this is a record that's very much left up to the listeners own interpretation, but I think it's an album that has to be analysed within the context of its body of work lyrically. There are songs on this album that revisit thoughts and moments from both GKMC and TPAB from a more twisted perspective, and I think that is really the point of this album. It's Kendrick wrestling with his personal demons, and pondering the futility of it all as his life could have been easily derailed with just wrong misstep by Ducky or Top. Does he have God to thank for that fortunate twist of fate? Even whilst God is making him suffer? That duality is what holds everything together at the heart of this album, whilst leaving everything more open with a deft attention to lyrical minimalism. I personally feel it deserves a strong 8 to soft 9 and is a welcome addition to Kendrick's catalogue.
And not a single mention of the fact that this album has a few of the worst songs kendrick has put out, love, god and loyalty are all just bad kanye/drake songs. It does have amazing songs too but these ones just drag it down so much.
I assumed this review would be garbage because everyone hates it, but yo, Melon actually gives it a lot of praise, and a very detailed ANALYSIS. He obviously approaches it as a complex artistic statement (which is how any Kendrick album should be approached) as well as an album, and has a lot of deep and insightful things to say about it. VERY GOOD REVIEW but yall trippin over the score.
I think reviews are ALWAYS better without scores. Numbers just take away good discussion. Guess people just want an easy way to describe the quality of music
@@kidnameless I disagree. A score makes the general thoughts and feelings more immediately understandable and easier to parse. It obviously shouldn't be the main part of the review but still.
@@voidsabre_ Number scores dont say anything about an album, its just a score. you have to listen to what he said about it, a 7 reflects how he feels on the album, but the review is the review the number isnt the review
Armz drake has a lackluster discography bud, putting out playlists to cover up the fact that his albums suck. he has numbers, and nothing else. kendrick has both the numbers and the discography to back him up as one of the greatest. yea, that's it. im out bruh 👊 oh, i'm not out. logic is a fucking biter, he doesn't have his own sound. he's dope, but only because the influences from others that he uses are dope so, meh. gambino's last project was fucking amazing but other than that, 😴😴😴😴. he's a dope actor and director tho, i fucks with him heavy. bruh, get ur tastes a check up, pls.

TVkob this deserves more likes. too many people change their opinion when hearing others
Yeah everytime i watch a review of his, he always ends up changing my mind :(
Melon killed BITTSM for me after his review

I think it's called "Damn." Cause he's realizing the butterfly effect thing and how that small thing at KFC put him where he is now.

i am. BLOWN away by the fact that he thought kendrick agreed with carl’s voicemail and that’s why he put it on FEAR. like why would kendrick make a whole track about the various ways fear has impacted his life and Black people’s lives as a whole then be like “by the way i think racism is our fault because we upset god.” maybe it’s just me but the voicemail was very clearly not presented as a positive thing or something he agreed with. he played the whole thing without interrupting it to show how deeply the fearmongering of the catholic church had affected his cousin, to the extent that he would call his cousin who was struggling to leave this drawn out raving voicemail about how their people’s suffering was their own fault. it was an example of someone whose life is controlled by fear. maybe i’m wrong or maybe you just need to be raised catholic (or similar religions mb) to understand idk lmao

so im not saying it doesn't deserve a strong 7 to light 8, but it's inconsistent with the rating here
shouldn't really look at it from a numerical perspective, seeing as he says 'I'm feeling', so its more to give a rough estimate as to how much he enjoyed it. Also waka 1.5 was pretty great, still waiting on 2.0 :(

Talking about all these layers makes me think we should call Anthony the onion instead of the melon.
Conor Andrich onision is the only onion
The album might be lackluster, but that Cal bit at the end is a strong 10
I like your take on the album a lot, I think it's a nice addition too.
I like what you said
And not a single mention of the fact that this album has a few of the worst songs kendrick has put out, love, god and loyalty are all just bad kanye/drake songs. It does have amazing songs too but these ones just drag it down so much.
You nailed the use of whilst btw
Wow. O,O
if you explain it like that of course it's a strong 8 or 9. Nice take on it. Makes sense.
