- Watch nine-time world bodyboarding champion, Mike Stewart, bodysurfing the waves of Teahupoo in Tahiti in October 2018.
The legendary bodyboarder ended up suffering a painful injury.
"I was having a great session until the end of my last wave when good things came to an abrupt halt," explained Stewart.
"As I rode my last wave, I found a new technique that took me faster, out of the barrel and onto the shoulder. I then tucked both arms in, attempting to go faster still, to get out in front of the white water snowball."
"The idea was to better penetrate the wave face and cut out, avoiding the dreaded inside suck over onto the dry reef. It was a miserable fail."
"As I dove into the wave face, I soon felt that inescapable, eerie anxiety of my body getting sucked over backward."
"At first, almost in slow motion, I then quickly accelerated downward into the reef, bouncing hard along the messed up, craggy bottom."
I suffered what must be my worst contusions ever surfing, and only the second time I ever got stitches riding waves. A sore lesson that I don’t plan on repeating."

Imagine the looks on peoples faces seeing Mike swimming out into the lineup to go body surfing.
He's the definition of a water man.
Indeed, Tony. He is the ultimate waterman. No doubt about that. There's nothing he can't do. 😉
Tony Allen so hardcore... whoa🌊🌊 the Goat
I used to see him, Ben Severson, Jack the Ripper and I don't remember the other names from the magazines, when I used to body surf at Sandy Beach in the 80s. I would sometimes watch them do those incredible moves from the parking lot before I went for a swim. I remember when they closed Sandy Beach for the contest and I drove to Makapu'u Beach Park down the road to catch some waves. It was always a hard choice to decide whether to go to Sandy Beach or Makapu'u since I loved them both so much. Those were the days.
Yes. Same here but was in 2008ish. Would see all them at sandys. Often it would be Mike Stewart and Jeff Hubbard riding at half point, even on only like 1.5 foot waves(hawaiian) they were doing ARS' and airs. Moks and sandys used to be my daily spots when I lived in Kailua and Honolulu. Riding sandys improved my skills a lot. My favorite break at sandys is Gas Chambers. Oh man! Miss it so much. Stopping in Waimanolo afterwards to eat at that restaurant with all the bible verses written on the walls or at foodland Hawaii Kai to get a teri chicken musubi and big stienlager. Obama bodysurfed there one day in like 2007 and just got in the line up with everyone else. We arrived 5 minutes after he had left but most the people in the line up were still there and were tripped out on it.
Only place Ive ridden in California Thats even close to being like sandys is at the Wedge in Newport Beach. Actually it gets even heavier tho.
I had friends who knew Sam Reid and legendary lifeguards around LA who discovered and first surfed Malibu and Hawaii. According to them board surfing was secondary to what they viewed as the ultimate way to ride waves - body surfing. Mark Cunningham Pipeline lifeguard is another example of this tradition. And looking at Stewart using his body to harness Teahupoo, I believe them. Brilliant.
You would not use hand pads nor even fins. Thats raw, natural animal feeling straight. You dont even need to see or think. Just feel and be. Thats how chidren do in zarautz and hossegor, that i know. Thats the primal phase. The foundation and what you treasure all along. Enjoy the bath and cath those nature loving gestures of joy. Jeehaw!!!
Mike, Master Waverider ! What an inspiration he has been to me 30+ years.
Unbelievable! Mike Stewart is a God! I have always wondered if anyone would bodysurf it. It just had to be Mike Stewart! 100% Waterman! Fantastic!
This is nuts enough already, then remember the guy is 60 years old!
Stewart is 100% Waterman
yep he said that himself back in the day. he couldn't surf but he loves the water and waves so he used a bodyboard instead of a surfboard. and I think Mike is the one bodyboarder that gets respect from surfers unlike 99% of bodyboarders. but again it's prolly where you live and what type of break your at. I'm just talking from experience
Waterman and Animal Glad to see your still charging God's speed my friend
Daang, Mikey! glad you're ok. though it does look like you were taking off a lil too deep there in the first two clips. the third wave looked like the right spot to take off at. see ya at sandys! half point was siick yesterday. 2.21.2022 and the day before
One of the greats
The legend, the myth...
The only time I ever got stitches because of bodysurfing was when I clunked heads in the tube with another guy coming from the opposite direction. Right on the top of the scalp. I saw Mike do a triple spin inside a large tube a few years ago. I was absolutely amazed.
great technique on dropping on that wave.
True waterman!!
In case anyone is wonder, the song is Reach for the Dead by Boards of Canada
Big respect from Bavaria germany
Ben Gravy is the G.O.A.T.

how does he walk 2 feet carrying 3 iron-clad balls.
And this is why I never bodysurf reefs, only sand bottoms.
REY BODYBOARD 😎👑🤟
So he got cut up or what?!
Yes, he got injured during this session. Read the video's description.
@@surfertoday Oops. I dont read descriptions of every video. The icon to the video is usually in the video in which this case it wasnt. All good
@@maattttt07 🤙🏻
But it was worth it.
Teahu poo 💩
Once guys ditch the boards, and get in the line up, then I start to respect them as a man. Other than that, they’re just annoying to me.
lol shut the fuck up your saying you have no respect for someone who surfs mavericks yeah right
Youre saying that if you saw someone bodysurf mavericks, you wouldnt have vastly more respect for them as a wave rider?
@@anthonygato407 I have more respect of they can ride many crafts including bodysurfing..
It all comes down to wave knowledge, not the format you choose.
