+FrogLungs Well nothing outside of availability of parts, but of course it would just be smarter to buy the whole car when it comes available for import to the USA. Since the original "Z" version addons would run you close to the cost of getting the whole car imported (that is including the BEAMS engine and transmission), to swap in to the version we have here in the USA. SO yes while you are absolutely correct, the "look" of the Altezza is basically the same car as the first gen Lexus IS... the overall package is far different animal in the way it handles and performs... since the Lexus IS has very soft suspension, lazy 2J engine, and it is hard to find one in a manual that is not completely ruined by the previous owners.
Another note about this engine is just how light it actually is. Of course it's lighter than the 6-cyl, but the 3SGE weighs only 315 pounds, whereas a non-turbo 2JZ weighs 450 pounds. Pretty remarkable.
The ls1/ls2 everybody loves to hate is only ~360lbs naked weight. The 6.2L ls3 is only 418lbs with all accessories, the Coyote 5.0 is DOHC and 430lbs with accessories, The N54 is also 430 but has some common issues stock, meanwhile a 2JZ-GTE is 594lbs.
love these cars, I would buy one of these before a newer 86 just for how much more practical these would be all around. one of the better looking sedans of that era for sure.
Z edition doesnt give you the extra 10hp. The 6mt gets the 10 hp extra over the 5at. Z edition gets you bigger brakes and fog lights and slightly diff seat fabric.
Auto and manual have slightly different engine heads first of all, auto have downpipe with 2 cats, manual just one. Thats where extra 10 hp goes. In Z-edition you also get extra plastic covers under the car.
Bro I’ve just bought a z edition and I still dont really know exactly what the difference is. I heard in some forums it’s just the metal pedal covers and the fact it has an lsd as standard
I owned a 2JZ-GE/5 speed manual Lexus, not an IS300, but the 1992 SC300 with the same engine/transmission combo. I kind of loved/hated that engine at the same time. Loved the smoothness, the sound, the lower rpm torque, the power when you did rev it up to 6,000rpm. That being said, it felt powerful but wasn't really a seriously fast car like a torquey 300hp LT1 Corvette. Main thing that drove me nuts with that car was the fuel economy, 17-18mpg in town, maybe 22-23 on the highway, and it swizzled 93 octane. I can deal with that if its a rocket ship V8 with 13 second quarter mile et's. That being said, I think the BEAMS engine should have been stock on the IS300, it was a technological improvement over the 2JZ-GE that first debuted 8 years earlier on my Lexus SC300.
@@C5R_Lite I own a is300 with a stock 2JZ-GE with the 5 speed auto, I was going to swap It with a gte but I'm thinking I might just turbo the GE that I own already. I've heard I could get about 350 HP safely without even taking apart my motor
Good car, seen a few RS200 Z editions around my town. Recently sold my RS200 Qualitat edition. It came with a standard Fujitsbo exhaust which made it sound a lot nicer than the standard Altezza tinny sounding exhaust. The other differences is the dark blue colour which only came with the Qualitat model, unique bodykit, gold alloys and red stitching on the seating. The Qualitat Modellista version is even rarer with a different cluster gauge. Only ever saw one on sale here in NZ.
An extremely popular import in Ireland thats now starting to appreciate. For a Long time these were abused to do rings on backroads and closed off events, clean low milage models are now soaring. A few I have seen going for 5k to 8k

Good video. Sometimes, I would I dream of buying an IS300 manual or auto and converting it too a 3S-GE Beams engine. That would of course have to be a project car now instead of a daily car. LOL
Just speculating but that cloudy rear fender and misaligned fuel cap might be indicative of shoddy panel work and paint, possible from an accident. seen a lot of that befor
While filming custom cars like these, you should turn the engine off so you can start it up again and let us be able to be hyped by the sound of this beast.
i love the altezza/is200 styling. very simple and clean but with a fairy aggressive face, especially with that body kit. i'd like one with a destroked aluminum LS engine. more power, still somewhat rev-happy, and not that much heavier of an engine (compared to the N/A 2J).
PacificCoastAuto the aluminum block ones are, but the iron block ones are roughly the same. the engine placement would be the same though, you'd just have a shorter engine.
an aluminum LS is in the 440-460lb range, depending on which version you get, while an iron block engine weighs about 80lbs more, which is roughly the weight of an RB25DETT (540lbs). you can't make the back of the engine go back any significant distance farther because the Toyota engines are fairly close to the firewall, but the length of the engine is much shorter than a 2J so it will look like it is mounted further back but it's just the block length.
Hello Derek, you have an amazing channel but I do have a few questions, and since you're not doing the question series anymore, I figured it'd be best to ask here. How old would you have to be to purchase a car from the auction, would you be able to purchase it under another person's name and would the 100K yen deposit be a part of the actual purchase of the car if the person actually purchases it (ex: I'd like to purchase a Z32 and I send in the 100K deposit and you get the car for 500K, would I have to pay the full 500K or pay 400K or would that go to the export fees?)
obviously i am not derek, but based on their website it seems that the 100k deposit after you purchase a car goes toward paying them for their services. So it would not be included toward the purchase of the car. I also don't think age matters as long as you can pay for the car
