- It was sad to leave Edinburgh behind, but we're not saying goodbye forever! And even though our next location -- Belfast -- was a last-minute day trip we added back into our route, it still held plenty of surprises -- from the breathtaking Titanic museum, to a late-night domestic dispute, and more!

Controversial opinion from an Englishman of Irish parentage but.... Belfast is a far cooler city than Dublin! Scratch the surface of Belfast and it's a truly fascinating place. Get yourself on the city bike ride tour. It's brilliant.
No its not a controversial opinion unless you are from dublin.Culchies would have absolutely no problem whatsoever if the capital of an united ireland was belfast or even cork but thats different.
I really loved these Edinburgh videos! As a native it's great to see the place through fresh eyes sometimes, as you end up getting used to it/taking it for granted when you've grown up here. So nice to see how much you enjoyed our city & I hope you get the chance to come back soon! There's lots more to see. Also it did make me laugh that the first people you encountered after leaving Scotland were a drunk, arguing Scottish couple, hope they didn't follow you around for the rest of your trip

Did you guys make it back to Edinburgh again yet? There's so much you didn't see that I know you'll love - mainly in the North of the city - Leith, Stockbridge, Dean Village, the Botanic Gardens
We did! About 3-4 weeks ago. Honestly, there was still plenty we didn't get to; the weather on our first day made it difficult to explore as much as we'd have liked (Storm Jocelyn was kicking off at that time), though we DID make it up to Leith for a bit, and saw some other things near city centre we missed the first time. Then our second day was a trip to the Highlands (basically 9 straight hours of jaw-dropping landscapes), and we spent a portion of our third day... well, we won't reveal that just yet. 😉
Long story short: There's still a LOT left to see and do, but we truly mean it when we say we'll be back again. We visited nearly 30 cities on this trip, and Edinburgh is one of the few that we plan to return to several times throughout our life together. (And of course we plan to see more of Scotland as well; we know there's more to the country than one city.)
They aren't glaswegian accents next door, they sound more like Lothian accents
If all you've seen of Scotland is Edinburgh, you HAVE to come back and see more. The North, especially north of Inverness, the islands. It's a stunning country. I'm enjoying your story. I'm in Edinburgh often (live near by) and can get grumpy trying to get through tourists, especially when trying to get home after work. You've given me a different perspective, and I promise, I'll be more understanding in future. 😁 it's a beautiful place and I'm glad you loved it. You did it proud. ❤
We've squeezed a return to Edinburgh into the end of our trip (we actually arrive there soon!) and have an excursion to the Highlands scheduled. Still not as far north as you've mentioned here, but the good news is, we will 100% be returning to Scotland in the near future, and that trip will allow us to be much more thorough.
We appreciate the kind words as well 😊 And we can only imagine how annoying mobs of tourists must be when you're trying to go about your day-to-day, so some grumpiness is more than justified.

I'm glad you were using that coffee place. They are excellent and friendly and I always recommend them.
JK Rowling clarified that the claims of The Elephant House are a bit exaggerated. She didn't first set foot in there for many years after she started Harry Potter. But she did do a bit of writing in there (probably for chamber or Prisoner). She also still lives here so you might see her out and about. Ian rankin is a common spot too.
Have never been to Belfast or Dublin but we are planning a jaunt to Emerald Park via Dublin soon. So will watch those videos for ideas.
Okay, onto my long trailed "What to do when you visit Edinburgh" advice.
Firstly, leave Edinburgh and see more of Scotland, esepecially the highlands. But you know that.
In Edinburgh the most important place to go is the National Museum of Scotland. It's free and it's world class and the most visited attraction in Scotland (and some years the UK) for good reason.
We have lots of other great museums too (though avoid the rip off witchcraft one) most of which are free. City Art Centre, Museum of Edinburgh, museum of Childhood and Surgeon's Hall (paid) to name a few.
The botanical gardens are fantastic and well worth a visit. Dynamic Earth is excellent I won't spoil it.
Potter fans should go to Greyfriars kirkyard for the headstones with Potter names, as you did, but also to Dean Village which looks like a Harry Potter set. Dean Village is on the Water of Leith (the river) and a walk along it takes you to the excellent modern art gallery, who also have a free shuttle bus from the free national gallery in the centre.
Do leave that centre though and explore good coffee and restaurants that are far cheaper in areas like Newington, Sciennes (pronounced sheens) (Summerhall a good culture and coffee stop) Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Dalry/Haymarket (secret OP but affordable restaurant area) Stockbridge, Leith, Easter Road and PORTOBELLO.
Why the all caps there? Portobello is an unmissable afternoon on the victorian sea front with victorian era spa and bathing pool (paid but council owned so cheap).
Shall we do cheap but good food spots? (we are a family remember) For fish and chips it's out to The Fishmarket at Granton. Truly next level. Only been to one better place ever and not by much. Pizza geeks three venues are all fun. Maki and Ramen's several are also good. The fountain pub does a decent roast. Haggis is a breakfast food, don't skip at least one full scottish. The queue at Mary's milk bar exists for a reason. It's genuinely amazing. That's a non harry potter experience that reminds you of potter through the every flavour beans style madness.
The forth bridges at Queensferry a short bus/train ride away are a UN heritage site for a reason. There is an lovely walk along rhe coast there through the Dalmeny estate.
Small day trips- North Berwick and Dunbar are nice seaside towns a short way away. The former has a beach and more amenites. The john muir way is interesting. There's a circular walk at Croy that is fun. The pentland hills are basically in edinburgh but guve the least touristy and best view if the town.
Don't do- The castle. It's much better to look at from the outside. Inside it's mainly just victorian barracks as it was an army base for a lot longer than most.

The fish would need to be coated in gold for me to ever want to go to Granton. I lived there briefly (not briefly enough) and the only time I’ll ever be back is if I’m travelling through it - at a great speed!

God I love these vids. Short but very sweet. Sat here watching this and thinking actually i could pop on the same flight and spend a day or two in belfast. I may opt for a different place to spend the night though..ha
I am a Scotsman but a strange thing about the Titanic is as you know it was built in Harland & Wollf in Belfast the Chairman of H&W was Lord Pirrie almost the same surname of myself (Pirie) . The person who found the ship on the bottom of the Atlantic was called Robert Ballard in 1985 which is the same surname of my wifes name.

I saw day 8 just before Christmas, I had been to Edinburgh a few weeks ago and wondered what you thought of it, then had to do your whole back catalogue of videos as it was all so interesting. I do hope you enjoy Dublin and look forward to seeing the next stages of your travels. Thanks for sharing your experience, good luck in the next stages, everyone so far has been English speaking (well sort of) but you might need a Google translate in Europe.
American Football was huge in the 80s when it was on one of the 4 tv channels. A generation of kids were into the sticker albums, clothing, heck I even had the wallpaper! There were teams all over the UK. I remember seeing the Scunthorpe Steelers at our local stadium. London had The London Monarchs. When SKY (satellite TV) bought the rights, it killed the momentum for nearly 20 years. The NFL play 4 official games in the UK every year and they are huge sellout events. NFL and College football are available via subscription and broadcast TV do show big games still. There's a big fanbase but mostly those of us who loved it in the 80s and passed it on to our kids.

Glad you enjoyed your time in Edinburgh, I hope you get a chance to come back to Scotland and visit the Highlands. It truly has the best that Scotland has to offer in terms of the views and experiences. American Football isn't really a thing over here, though there is a growing fandom that watches it. Very few play it though, most will play either football (soccer) or rugby. For the majority though, the only thing they know about American Football is the Super Bowl.

Yep, a desk fan is a great solution. My girlfriend discovered this by accident during a heatwave a couple of summers ago. If you live in a flat, as most Edinburgh / Leith residents do, laminate floors mean that all you need is for your upstairs neighbour to be walking around when you're trying to sleep to cause you problems.
Leaving Scotland and getting a Scottish couple having a barney next room in Belfast , it actually sounded quite a civilised argument, concise points being put across by both parties 😂 .

We're actually back in Edinburgh as we type this comment! Squeezed in a few more days because we loved the city so much last time. Explored a bit more of it a few days ago, saw the Highlands yesterday to experience more of Scotland. Sadly we leave tomorrow, so we're going to make the most of our last day, because it really will be goodbye for a while. (But not for forever, because Scotland will 100% be a place we return to throughout our life.)

The neighbours in Belfast being Glaswegian is hilarious. Americans should think of Glaswegians as kinda like Italians: that was just a regular argument. If you'd shouted something funny through the wall, it would have turned into a party and you'd still be there. Bytheway, 1/3 of Scots live in Glasgow, since the clearances.

We actually spoke to him briefly the next day and he said he was from Glasgow. But on the flip side, there was also a VERY kind older couple, also from Glasgow, staying in a room downstairs, whom we spoke to for longer that evening.

Originally it was never in the route -- but due to some changes deeper in the trip, we got some time back and added Wales near the end, right before we close things out back in London. So we'll be there in about 3 and a half weeks, as of the time of this comment! 😃
I used to work on Victoria Street - in what is now the blue building - Maison Bleu? Anyway, it used to be Kinnell's Coffee House, and it was painted red. :-)

Guys I’m sure you have figured out by now. The UK and Europe never or almost never gives you your flight gate in advance. The boards will usually give you the time the gate will be revealed.
Tip for flight travellers in the UK. After you check in, and before you go through security, go to the Special Assistance desk. If they're not busy and in a good mood, they'll tell you what your gate number will be.

American football is not a UK school sport, or college /Uni sport. It is played and there are a few leagues, but not huge. Rugby, football are the huge o es

@@qlctravels As clubs get more established they are able to add a junior sections but usually it would not be the case.American football is growing in ireland and i say ireland because like most sports its organised on an all island basis, they are about 30 clubs now however its still a very niche sport compare to gaelicc football ,soccer,hurling and rugby

Those were just students in the local university trying out American football ,i think they are two American football clubs in belfast and they play in an all island league of 30 clubs which might sound alot but thats all of the sport in ireland no schools play it no under age as those lads looked in their 20s,compare that to 2300 GAA(hurling and gaelic football) ,around the same for soccer and 230 for rugby.So its very niche as a sport.

Is American football played on English schools? No - in a word! American football is known in the UK and is certainly watched, and even played in specialised leagues, but the amount of equipment needed probably makes it non viable for schools considering it is still small compared to football and rugby.

No kids north or south don't play american football.American football is played in ireland but mostly by adults who grew up with established sports in ireland.The mains sports in both parts of ireland are soccer,Gaelic football ,rugby and hurling.Gaelic football is our version of football though soccer is very popular aswell we also have hurling which is something you will have to look up but its also a huge sport in ireland but not so much Northern ireland.

I have such a severe cringe on the go suffering thru the drunk Scottish pair annoying you lovely folks. Tis always a possibility the cheap & cheerful B&B may throw you interesting neighbours for the night, sadly. That Glaswegian & his schemie (from housing "scheme".... think "the projects") partner in crime were a particularly foul-mouthed & loud annoyance tho!! For those interested in the accents, I'm saying he is 100% Glaswegian, but her voice gave me flashbacks to a particular junkie shoplifter from Wester Hailes who we frequently had to shoo out of our store when I worked retail in Edinburgh thru the late '90s, so I'm going to say Edinburgh (but could be from any of the smaller towns along the M8 corridor between Edinburgh & Glasgow).
Anyhoo, I apologise on behalf of us less boozy, shouty, sweary, Scots (contrary to popular opinion the majority of us do not behave like this, honest!).
