The Suede dye can make any shoe or any suede look like a brand new color item. I bought some all white Suede Shoes at a discount and did one light coat of the black dye on parts of the suede. It looks like a brand new shoe from the factory, no marks or streaking. You just make sure there is an even amount on the applicator and just move it at an even touch accross the suede. The suede just soaks it up.
I have a tip. Sometimes I use a spent bullet case to punch holes. It makes it easier if you can sharpen the opening with a shamfer tool. Don't sharpen too thin.
I've used these a lot. It takes some practice to get really consistent results. So easy to get that metallic coat, then more alcohol to clean it off. You'll end up with a piece of rawhide if you're not careful. I still oil everything after this dye, because it will dry the leather, dramatically in some cases. You can really play with the colors and cut them a lot to get a really nice shade. Turquoise and the blue are two of my favorites. We still prefer oil dyes.
i'd love to be able to use Feibing's Pro dye, but it can't be sent to CA. :( Fortunately, Angelus is made here in CA and is what I use. It is fantastic! Their acrylic paints are good too.
Thanks Chuck! I was wondering, could you please do an armor video? Maybe a series, separated by mainstream projects every other video, if the trouble is not having enough mainstream projects. Regardless, thanks for the video!
Even though I don't make armor, I would 100% watch just to learn new skills. Chuck can make any lesson enjoyable. I think armor would be very interesting!
I love the colors they have, but they can be a little tricky sometimes where one coat looks great but goes way darker with a second coat or dipping. I'm still new to leather, but this stuff even the great Chuck needs to experiment lol
I would love to see a video on the difference between leather dies and leather recoloring balms, I've looked everywhere and cant find anything comparing the two.
Does this dye work on previously dyed leather? I have a pair of old doc martens I want turn into a black cherry red color any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Chuck I was wondering how to avoid haveing creaky and/or squeaky leather, and what are some things I can do to fix this problem once it has occurred?
This did answer some questions I have had for a while about coloring leather I am a furniture maker & I do have some more questions about this. Lets say, I want to make an oversized leather covered sofa. How far does that dye go? Also, I treat all leather goods with pure beeswax. This makes leather last a lot longer & also waterproofs it. I see this as an added feature that lets my customers know I want to make the best possible product. Will that create any issues with these dyes? Is the acrylic product similar to epoxy used in things like river tables? I want very much to keep the leather very soft & pliable over the years.
Hi there, For a couch you would probably want a larger size dye - more like 32 oz. You shouldn't have a problem adding a beeswax top coat to this dye. The acrylic top coat is not like epoxy, it's a top coat to seal in the dye and keep it from rubbing off onto clothing, etc. It will still be flexible when it dries.
Will this dye always rub off on clothes? Is it necessary to apply the top coat cause i used a oil preserve after and it still comes off with the black? Only been dried 1 day so idk.
I have what is supposed to be a burgundy wallet but really looks more brownish and I want it to stand out like the green in this video. Is there a way to die a darker color to a lighter color... Or brown to green? I hope you were able to answer this for me. Thank you. I love your video.
Unfortunately there is not a good way to dye leather a lighter color. Leather dye is transparent so it doesn't cover up, it just enhances or adds to so if you add green to brown it will likely just get darker with a bit of a green hue. You can try using deglazer first and that will lighten it somewhat but we still can't guarantee that it will have the outcome you are looking for.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply I really do appreciate an honest answer. Thank you so very much. I will make do because I love the Allet. It is the second one I purchased and it is the best wallet I have ever had. I will give away my black one and make do with the dark burgundy one. Again thank you.
Hi great video!!! What would you recommend for customizing a baseball glove? I would be using a neutral colored glove. I need the product used to show vibrant colors and also allow for occasional conditioning to be applied. Don’t know if I should use leather paint or leather dye. Thanks
Hi there, leather paint would give you brighter color options but you do run the risk of rub off a little bit quicker. Would you be able to stamp the letters in and then paint the the stamped areas? That would allow the paint to be in the recessed areas and lessen the risk of rub off.
Hi Bob, Chuck goes over this in this video: ruclips.net/video/yVe1-5PUVNU/видео.html We also have a video by Joe Meling actually showing the process: fb.watch/3PxOFPVDh2/
Thanks for trying these and showing your results. How would you compare the feel of the leather of each of these to those that have been dyed with the Feibings Pro oil dye. I've been using the Pro dye and have used the Feibings regular dye and the regular does feel dryer than the Pro.
Beeswax has given some of the best water resistant results for me. "Waterproof" I don't know - leather is porous so eventually if submerged long enough it will absorb some of the water.
Hey chuck! I'm trying to figure the background of my tooled leathers with Angelus ox blood, and when i tan cote it to resist before antiquing, it's picking up and smearing the angelus dye! I let the dye sit over night and wiped it off in the evening next day to get excess off before tan cote! Could you help me figure out how to avoid getting this dye over my whole project?
Not related, I just want to know if you received your angelus leather dye that way - no seal in the bottles. I received mine without seal, just wondering if I received a decanted one.
Hi Bunny, The top coat is going to put a seal on the leather so I don't know that the conditioner will soak in very well. You can lightly oil the piece after dyeing and let it dry completely before applying a top coat. Or just work the leather with your hands a bit after the dye has dried and this ill help soften it up a bit.
Hi Lucy, I'm not sure what you are referring to. I have not seen clear dye - but there are top coats that are clear. Tops coats will put a satin or shiny finish on your leather and seal in the dye. If you were to mix white paint and a top coat you would likely get a white-washed look but we have not tried this so we can't recommend it. Not sure the two would mix together very well either but you can always experiment and see what you come up with.

Do you stamp first then use your Angelus paints?

I have a brown leather sofa. I want to do a very light grey or white. Will these work?
Unfortunately no, leather dye will only go darker - not lighter.
Thanks Chuck! Beautiful colors. Is this dye an oil based dye?
Believe it's considered alcohol based
Will that Angelus finisher prevent rub-off onto clothes and skin?
Hi Sam,
Yes, it is designed to seal in the color.
What type of leather are the sample pieces?
Curious if I can condition after the topcoat with something that will soften the effects of the alcohol dye? Suggestions?
Hi Bunny,
The top coat is going to put a seal on the leather so I don't know that the conditioner will soak in very well. You can lightly oil the piece after dyeing and let it dry completely before applying a top coat. Or just work the leather with your hands a bit after the dye has dried and this ill help soften it up a bit.
great info chuck!! thanks
What is the topcoat? A sealer? Plastic?
Top Coat is a sealer to lock in the dye. The Angelus brand is acrylic.
