chet atkins and tommy emmanuel part 1 on a show in 97 feel free to go to my channel page and donate what ever you can so i can add more exciting content thanks
I took my grandson to see Chet in 1999. I asked Chet what advice he would give this young guitar player. He said “Do something else for a living and play guitar for fun “. He’s now a doctor and plays for fun. Thanks Chet for your words of wisdom for my grandson.
@Sabah Zarid Hey man, if you want to play then play. Let it out. If you're not happy otherwise, find a way to alleviate the weights of your world. The best inspiration, I've found, is happiness. It could be love or anything really.
Tommy always radiates joy when he plays, but the only other time I've ever seen him look this blissfully happy playing with someone else is when he's playing with his brother Phil 💕
Just look how jubilant and happy Tommy is. This is what we should all strive for. Not a hint of pretension or ego, just joy and respect of the moment. This is why he captivates me, even more so than his guitar playing, he's a good soul. You don't see to many reach his age and keep that spirit.
Atkins was an iconic performer yet his greatest legacy was changing the way the guitar as an instrument can be played. The "greatest" guitarists in country and rock music all point to Chet Atkins as the master.
A great entertainer and makes good use of the flat-pick but I personally know of songs that he has publicly admitted that he couldn't play because of the limitations of his style.
100% and it becomes all the more astonishing when, like I have, you study him for a decade and come to understand just how difficult his compositions really are. The greatest to ever wear a thumb pick.
It still breaks my old heart whenever I see an old Chet video, particularly as his health began to decline. I love how Tommy shows infinite love, respect, and admiration to Chet for all that he did for Tommy's development over the years. Now pardon me while I go have a good cry!
My father introduced me to Chet's music early in my life. He was a jazz guitarist and began playing at age 4. He left me long ago but instilled in me the importance of respecting one's elders. I pay homage to Chet's work ethic . Very few are aware that Chet battled cancer for the last 25 years of his life. Don't know of a single instance of him cancelling an appearance. Also notable is Chet's efforts to introduce Tommy Emmanuel to his fans. We honor Chet and those he honored.
@SvendBosanvovski Incredible! I hadn't known that. Makes this even more awesome to watch. Especially after watching all the videos of Tommy talking about how Chet was literally his first inspiration to pick up the guitar, as a young kid.
Two of the finest to ever play a guitar. That must have felt so special for TE as CA was his guitar hero. I love the look that Chet gives around 2:12 to Tommy as does a little lick. Chet was impressed, I think and that is a special moment. I feel bad that I've only recently discovered more of the genius of Chet Atkins but also the late, great Jerry Reed. Tommy, Chet and Jerry Reed are very special players.
Atkins and Emmanuel's THE DAY FINGER PICKERS TOOK OVER THE WORLD is one of the best collaborative albums I've ever heard...of course, with Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel, how could it NOT be anything other than great?
I think this is such a great example of the apprentice surpassing the master in a way. Tommy certainly has such amazing admiration for Chet yet in my opinion surpasses him in ability, but you can hear how Chet really is such a huge inspiration in Tommy's playing and helped him gain the sound he has through inspiration.
Gotta love Tommy’s joyfulness while playing, and can’t help but admire how little effort it seems Chet needed to accomplish the same amount of noise. Both these guys are class acts.
@@cgprande he got some techincs that are chets signature. As well as merle travis and reed... You can see the inspiration when he plays, but ofc he has his own style, but still.
You can tell Tommy is just about to bust with joy playing with his guitar hero. It is so cool to see. He's not trying to outplay Chet. Tommy is showing his skill level while not disrespecting his hero. He has so much respect for Chet. It's obvious!!!!! Loved their playing together.
You're right, he's not trying to out-play Chet. There's a RUclips video where Chet is giving Tommy his CGP award and jokes to Tommy saying, you're now just showing off, and Tommy says: No Chet, I'm showing YOU off.
This is timeless and golden..2 guitar legends jamming to a great tune with so much fun and joy. Tommy has carried the torch given by Chet with class and dignity.
For any American friends that might not know, the second melody is the iconic Australian bush song Waltzing Matilda - and an incomparable version by the two CGP masters. RIP, Chet. Gone, but never, ever forgotten.
Fab. What else can I say? This is tops on top playing. Tommy not only keeps the flame burning but is am extraordinary player on his own. As a Duo with Phil his brother they were unbeatable entertainment in Australia.
+Ryan Smith Yes but probably if Chet wouldn't have done what he did Tommy wouldn't started playing the guitar as he do, and he knows that. Altought now he is better than Chet i think he will always admire him, and in this video you can see this :) Sorry for my awful english ;)
I was just reading the response from Larry23116. He hit the nail right on the head. Chet was responsible for so many rookies becoming stars that it's hard to count them. And he did it from the goodness of his heart and the intelligence of his brain knowing talent when he heard it. My hat's always been off to him for all the good he's done. And no one can come up with any bad that he's done. Pretty remarkable life for a great man. God rest his soul forever and ever. I miss you, my friend.
When I was about 6 yrs old, my Uncles had Chet Atkins does the Beatles. Would spend hours listening to this album and then listening to my Uncle playing Art and Garfunkel. My Grandfather and his brothers would play together. Brings lots of wonderful memories.
Sounds like a classy comment from a person with class. Should be more of you on here commenting on rare jewels like these two. Thanks for your positive energy.
Dear Chet. Thankyou for being such an inspiration, and for inspiring such a fab guitarist who is in his own right an influential guitarist judging by those guitar skills. And thankyou for your music. Lots of love. A dedicated country/bluegrass (mainly bluegrass) music fan.
I have listened to both of them a lot in my life and I knew that Tommy was inspired by that man but how the hell did I miss this video of them playing together??? Love them. RIP Chet Atkins
My parents (born in the 1930s) wanted me to play like this after one year of lessons and self teaching. I used to look at them and laugh. Oh, yeah, I'm on it! Any day now! I was thirteen. I still have difficulty executing parts of this 30 years later. Gotta love it.
this has been the best day ever, have been browsing through old tommy and chet footage and having the best time ever!! truly thankyou for this and also thanks youtube giving u the chance to share it with all of us
Thank you for the kind comment, sir.I had to change my tag.I'm glad Chet made the choices he did. When he realized he was putting alot of players out of work,he moved to producing -I don't know of anyone that conscientious and thoughtful.I love Chet Atkins,as if he was my father. My regret is that I never met him.For a man to have started life poor and isolated,he had a wealth of talent and hoards of people that thought the world of him-I know I still do.

Was just thinking how generous Chet was in doing this to introduce Tommy to an American audience and give him his blessing. He was obviously not feeling at all well, but played and joked like not just a professional, but a warm human being. No wonder Tommy loves him so much.
I've seen Roy Roger's play "Malaguena"...WOW !! As a young kid I was not impressed but later in life understood how technical that song is and was blown away!!!
How cool for ol Chet to impress a young boy so far away in Australia and then share the same stage with him years later. Though some of the finest pickers are gone today like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, Tommy will now stand in their place on stage and do their picking style justice. Great job!
At 5:27 Lenny Breau gets mentioned... The idea that Atkins, Breau, and Emmanuel are in the same place at the same time, even if it only happened once, stuns me. @@cgprande which in particular?
He is the best. Of all time. He plays the guitar effortlessly, acoustic guitar on top of that. Bends notes like he’s playing an electric.
