Unlike the Bass or Guitar, you can't turn the volume down so to solve the drums overpowering the other sounds in the mix they put them behind a screen to block off the excess noise, that way the drummer can do his thing and hit his drums without worrying about sound problems. If you go to studio sessions or live performances in small venus you'll see this often.
