Mega Man X...a game right out of my childhood. Another great composition, and each piece fits well in its proper place.
Capcom Intro: Always lovely to hear an orchestrated version of this little jingle.
Capsule/Doctor Light's Theme: I wasn't expecting to hear this so early on in the medley, but it actually fits very well here--it serves as something of an expository tune, as if Dr. Light himself was narrating the history of Mega Man X and his concerns for the future.
Intro: High energy without being overbearing, the glissando of the harp and the flourishes in the wind section really make this piece stick out. It sets the mood for this game in a big way, indicating in its own form that this won't be like the "Classic" Mega Man series.
Ruined Highway (Intro Stage): And picking up right where the intro left off, we have the introductory stage; the driving strings, the harmony and rhythm provided by the brass, followed by the soft interlude picking up to the stings in the climax, once again give it emphasis without making it excessive. Adding the slowdown and the suspenseful cymbal, we're led into...
Vile Appears/Fortress Boss Intro: A delightfully ominous piece, short but sweet. The second repetition expands amazingly on the first, drawing out more of the wind and strings, and calling on the brass to lead into the dramatic swell at the end, complete with the percussion to pull us into the inevitable encounter.
Vile/Fortress Boss Battle: With the heavy "metal" feel of the original, it's always a curious thing to see how it translates to an orchestral score. This arrangement did a great job keeping all the different parts balanced--there's so much going on at once and it undoubtedly feels intense, simultaneously subdued and overwhelming to give the feeling of a truly hopeless fight. Of course, it doesn't stay hopeless for long.
Zero: From the word "go" this theme, both in general and especially in this symphonic suite, just feels _awesome._ The cavalry has arrived, and the ace is here to save the day. The sharp drums, the brass holding down the bass, and the octave-echoed strings on melody give a very heroic feel to this piece.
Talking with Zero: Always loved this theme--it breaks up and maintains the tension at the same time; as soon as the soulful introduction ends, the drums and the rest of the orchestra come in to keep the mood driven and determined.
Stage Select: Another short but sweet piece that translates interestingly from "rock" to orchestra. The percussion does a great job keeping it going forward.
Stage Start: At first I was caught off guard by the "light" sound of the beginning of this iconic tune...only to be caught off guard again when the full orchestra came in to bring it home. Very nicely done.
Abandoned Missile Base (Chill Penguin Stage): The piano and strings at the very beginning of this piece sound incredible, and coupled with the horns in the melody they beautifully capture the feeling of an ice-themed stage. The building brass right before the melody starts only adds to the intensity, and it all comes together at the tail end to foster an aura of menace to offset the beauty.
Energy Mine Ruins (Armored Armadillo Stage): Immediately we're drawn into a high-energy, fast-paced song filled with pumping brass, jazzy melodies and delightful flourishes in strings and wind, with a heavy dose of upbeat percussion to drive it along. The piece really conveys the sensation of running down the rails on a mine cart speeding along and twisting every which way.
Fortress Tower (Boomerang Kuwanger Stage): The quiet strings leading into the heavy first section gave me the feeling of jumping through the tower's security, dodging lasers and flying robots every which way; the brass and wind afterwards, from the quiet portion after the initial stings to the swelling approach toward the climactic ending, brings to mind climbing the tower's elevator, only to scale the tower from deck to deck as the wind whips around you and more of the tower's defenses oppose your quest to reach the top. Always liked this particular Maverick for some reason.
Subterranean Base (Launch Octopus Stage): A sharp sting as we "splash" into the water, followed by rapid and driven percussion and a steady bass line. It's rare to see fast-paced water themes, and the intensity of each sting is accented nicely by the relatively "normal" feel of the overall composition.
Prototype Weapons Plant (Flame Mammoth Stage): The horns and brass were definitely the right choice to start out this portion, a great selection of instruments to carry across the "fire" motif. The strings after the intro do a great job of preserving the melody without overcoming the percussion, and the horns and brass returning on the second repetition of the melody brings to mind the "trumpeting" of Flame Mammoth far in the distance.
Electromagnetic Power Plant (Spark Mandrill Stage): Just as the brass was a good choice for the introduction to the prior section, the strings work wonderfully here. Switching between louder and softer sections reflects the shifts between "light" and "dark" sections of the power plant, and the bass line and percussion really help bring it all together.
Recon Base Ruins (Sting Chameleon Stage): I've always wondered what this would sound like orchestrated, forest levels seem to lend themselves well to being arranged in that style. Driven by the percussion and strings, with the brass doing a great job moving from melody to support, this piece never loses its energy. Even halfway through when everything drops out except for the woodwind, we get a fleeting sense of haunting splendor from the forest setting before the tension builds again.
New-type Airport (Storm Eagle Stage): Having the section before this one in the same key definitely benefits this piece. The entire track feels like you're leading an assault on a flying fortress, and with the wind and string instruments supporting the brass (when they're not providing their own melody), the orchestration masterfully conveys the "air" theme.
Maverick Battle: I like that the percussion (and at times the piano) works the main melody of the piece, with the remainder of the orchestra compounding the suspense without feeling rushed or out of place. I also appreciate that this orchestration started exactly at the point in the loop where it eventually ends, instead of going straight from the beginning--it gives the feeling of a surprise attack or a battle already in progress.
Stage Clear: Short, sweet, triumphant and to the point, love that this was given a proper orchestration.
Sigma Palace 4 Theme: I'll be honest, I didn't expect the suite to jump straight to this piece, especially with how iconic the first Sigma Palace theme seems to be with people. But I do like the transition from the "stage clear" to this track, signifying that victory, however sweet, has been a temporary one. This song, while seemingly simple, has a sort of chilling feeling to it; considering where it's placed it makes sense.
Sigma Transforms: Bypassing the first Sigma battle's theme was another curve ball this medley threw me, but a pleasant surprise to see this theme properly orchestrated. Slowing down for the inevitable final battle, complete with the subverted chord at the end.
Vs. Sigma 2: Another theme I always loved, it seems more appropriate for a final boss cutscene than a legit battle, a "death march" where the villain's forces are being mobilized or they're staring down the hero with a sort of vicious, smug superiority. Nonetheless, it's delightfully orchestrated here, an ominously quiet tune on strings and wind at first that builds into a majestic battle fanfare as the brass joins in the melody.
Ending: I admit I don't remember this theme too much, but the piano and strings to start it off feel like a beautiful decision. X's apprehension about the future, about what he may have to do and how many more lives have to end before peace is achieved, everything is wonderfully conveyed here, especially when the wind's countermelody comes in.
Credits: And at last we reach the ending credits--starting off optimistically with trumpets backed by the harmony of the wind before both trade off to the strings for a different sort of cautious optimism. Finally everything comes together, the horns and strings pulling the melody while the wind section returns to keep the rhythm and the brass supports the piece in the bass.
Thank you so much for creating such a fantastic tribute to a game that I thoroughly enjoyed growing up. Amazing work.

The Castings was truly magnificent, it was my favorite guitar riff in the original MMX, but it fits the orchestra so well it could be like the last scene in a documentary about conquering obstacles and raising arms in victory.
