Such a good question! The only way for your students to not see the assignment in grades is assignment by assignment. When you're creating or editing the assignment, under 'Display Grade As' choose 'Not Graded'. Otherwise, the assignments will show in the grade book with an ! icon, which states the assignment does not count towards the final grade when clicked. I wish there was a better way.
Good question! To give the final exam a separate weight, you'd want to have a group called Final Exam. The only assignment/quiz in this group would be the final exam. I'm not sure what you mean by the quarter weights. Do you have an cumulative grade for the year, broken into 3 quarters?
I looked through the Canvas Community posts, and found that you cannot disable the what-if feature. But the idea has been proposed, so hopefully it will get some traction!

Such a great question. You could create just 2 assignment categories--One for Months 1/2 and the other for Months 3/4--then weigh everything inside of those by points. Then, in Grades, click the Gear for settings > View Options > Hide Totals and Override Columns. This will hide the combined grade. Otherwise you'd need 2 separate classes.
Hi! Wondering why my gradebook is showing a much lower percentage (i.e., 65% because the final project has yet to be graded). The student(s) should see 100% vs. 65%. Does that make sense?
One possibility (which happened to me this quarter!) is that you have an assignment with a past date on it. If you have the Canvas assign 0s automatically, all of those scores will be a 0. In Grades, you can either hide the assignment grades by hovering on the column name and clicking the 3 dots, then Hide grades. You can also get to 'Set Default Grade' by clicking the 3 dots and assigning a blank grade to all. If that isn't it, go to Assignments and check that your categories and assignments are in order. I hope this helps!

I did not find any video on it in your account. 1) In Canvas LMS, I am trying to see all the questions I have inside an Item Bank. But for each question, I have to click to open and see the answer options. Is there any way I can expand ALL the questions at the same time? 2) In Hot Spot questions, what if my question has four hot spots? How do I set that up? E.g., picture of a human body. Identify the hands, chest, and legs. Thank you! [Please do not get mad at me!]

I am experimenting with the free version of Canvas for keeping homeschooling records and just need a simple graphical interface for a spreadsheet to record marks and grades. In Canvas, I can create weighted Assignment Groups: Classwork, Quizzes, Tests, Projects, etc., which is exactly what I want, as it allows me simply to enter marks for work completed outside Canvas. However, all these assignment links are organized better if I copy them into Unit Modules for each subject: English, History, Science, and Math. Will these assignments I copied into the Unit Modules still carry the grade weighting I originally created when I first created the Assignment Groups?
Great question! Yes--the weights are completely determined by the settings in the Assignments tab. It doesn't matter where the assignments live, just how they're categorized in Assignments.

Hi Angie, I weighted my gradebook into two weighted categories (HW) and (P). For some reason, (HW) is not showing up, in the final average screen for a student, even though I have a few assignments categorized as homework. How do I fix this?
A couple of possibilities: The assignments need to be published for those to appear. To test it for yourself, switch to Student View (from Home click Student View). Check that they appear there. You can also add scores for Test Student, and check Student View again to check that they appear.
I have a grade category that has three components. Quizzes (eight of them). Library workshops (three of them). And class participation. Each element is out of a 100. So total 1200. This is worth 20% of the semester grade. How do I go about setting this up in Canvas? I am new to it.
SUCH a good question. Canvas weighs assignments within a category by points, so the easiest way to set that up is with one assignment category called Quizzes with a weight of 20%. All of these assignments will live in that group, each worth 100 points. I’d label them clearly, like “Quiz #1” or “Participation: Interview Your Classmate”, etc. However, if your grades are all based on points-1200 is out of a total 6000 possible, leave off the % weight, and give them their own assignment groups. The default weight in Canvas is all by points. I hope this helps! Let me know, if not.
@@AngieTeaches Thank you! I made a Quiz category and was trying to insert that inside a higher category. I found out, nested categories are not allowed in Canvas. So, I made an "Exam - 20%" category, and individually included all eight quizzes (Q1-Q8), participation, and workshops (W1-W3) as individual assignments inside that category. Each of the 12 assignments are worth 100 each. Also, to respond to your suggestion, I feel more comfortable with categories (BlackBoard days) as they help me organize things better (perhaps visually). And not everything is weighed the same anyways. tl;dr : )
Hi Angie, Thank you for this. I have a question about the Grade To Do list. I have a student who submitted an assignment. I have graded it and made a comment to her. This same assignment for this same student keeps getting added to my To Do list--every day! This is only happening with this one student. I've confirmed she has a score (10/10) and it is showing up in Grades. How can I make this go away so I don't see it pop up on my To Do list daily?

When you're in SpeedGrader for that assignment, is there a green checkmark next to the student's name or an orange dot? Look for the drop-down list of student names in the upper right corner. Most likely, Canvas is using a previous grade and needs you to verify something like "use this score for resubmission". Let me know!

There is no 'Show Question Details' in Item Banks for the New Quizzes engine, so you are stuck with expanding each with the "V" one by one.

Good question! I get this question from my students, too. There should be an X to the right of the To Do item. Just click that to make it go away.
