As the parent of an Autistic young man let me say that trains are one of the top loves of Autistic children! My then 5 year old son would stand on the platform and yell "HERE COMES A TRAIN" for every train he spotted in the distance, the others on the platform would laugh and watch his delight in seeing his beloved trains. Such a simple joy!

Some nice variety even with only CSX and NS providing the trains. The story about Brownie is what helps to make the hobby even .more interesting. Every now and then I'll be looking at maps and especially ones from the 30s thru the 60s where towns(even midsize) where tracks radiated 6 to 10 directions. Truly a hub in its day but now often down to 2 or 3. A tip of the hat to the participants and organizers of the Spartenburg group. Good constructive interests are shared and that goes beyond just the hobby. Good work as always.

Danny - Really loved the part with the Hub City Railfans. My son is autistic, & I have had him out railfanning since he was really young. He first enjoyed the Conrail that ran at the back of his grandparent's property, & now enjoys both the Clinchfield (CSX) and Norfolk Southern. It was a proud Dad moment when he first pronounced "Norfolk Southern" since he does not speak that well. He has loved the Clinchfield since the mid-2000's when we railfanned the south end from Erwin to Spartanburg. For those of you that may have autistic children (or know of someone who does) railfanning is a great little hobby! Thanks again Danny for all your hard work & great videos.

@@Tracksidebench Hello! I lived in Lafayette for about 7 years. The main Lafayette yard i'm not familiar with and not sure if there are any sights for that. However, the line running south out of town has many spots to see the trains creeping in/out of town. The main one that comes to mind with some open space to set up on is E Pinhook. Look up a store called Bargain Furniture. That crossing has space on both sides. Just south (like one block) is Spring St and Dorset Ave. From there, you can parallel the line on Highway 90 South past the air port and into Broussard, LA. South of Broussard, Hwy 90 takes a sharper turn south and the line then parallels Old Spanish Trail (LA 182 I think) All along this route are plenty of spaces to post up and get some good views.
The line that leaves the Laffy yard and heads East crosses some sketchy areas of town and I dont recommend you go there. The line that runs West out of town and parallels Hwy 90 has endless places to post up and watch freight head in/out of Lafayette. If you're lucky, you just might catch an Amtrack. About 40m north of Lafayette is another busy line that parallels Hwy 190. I live next to this line in Eunice. Its busy. Trains all the time.

I can usually watch train videos with the sound off but not yours! Too many facts and stories to learn from. The highlight of this video was the Hub City group. It goes to show that people from all backgrounds and cultures can come together and enjoy each other’s company over a shared interest. Sports, music and now trains bringing folks together. I saw no divisiveness here, unlike the media tries to push. This is the America I love.

As a veteran Union Pacific railroader it warms my heart to see these folks get kids interested in railroading . If only the kids could get to ride in the headend locomotive for something like 50 miles or so they would have an experience tens of millions of people could only wish to be able to do . It gives a person the knowledge of what Engineers and Conductors experience every time they climb in the cab and what happens at rail crossings hoping and praying some idiot doesn't go around the gates or try to beat their train especially when there are multiple tracks . I've seen it happen and it's not pretty when their decision was dead wrong . Thanks for an Awesome video Danny .

I rode in a soo line engine while they built the train, then a short run to another yard to drop the cars then we pulled empties back to the yard we left. Also saw engine and car shops, a tour of the yard and tower. My friends dad was in charge of the yard. He arranged it for us. I applied for a rr job after but was never hired sadly. I applied to be a Brake man. That's a step to conductor which I wanted to be.

Having worked in the rail industry on/off since 1980, I appreciate this knowledgeable "fan". Lots of insights regarding history of the tracks & companies . . . and the industries that depend on this useful, not-so-anachronistic, method of transporting heavy, bulky freight at not-always-lightning speeds. The telefoto shots, from the overpass/bridges give one a great perspective of the scope of a small portion of the North American network.

Thank you Danny for sharing your railfanning videos with all of us other railfans. I especially liked the fact that so many young railfans have a safe place to gather to watch trains! I'm in San Antonio, Texas, and several of us adult railfans meet almost every Saturday to watch and photograph trains here. For years we were the only ones, but in the last year we have had several teenager railfans come by and join us. They are now getting to be regulars at our Saturday gatherings, and I think that's great to have them with us. Carl

A railfan since I was young, growing up in Cicero, Illinois, a block away from the railyard. Used to listen to the steam engines humping cars in the yard on the early days of the Burlington Route. Have watched your videos over the last ten years but this is my first time comment. Excellent videos and comments make your videos great. I worked for General Motors for 45 years, the first ten was for EMD. When I started there, order number 7198 had begun, the beginning of the most powerful diesels they produced, the DD40 X. It was sight to see these behemoths being moved, by being lifted and on the rails. I'm retired these days, live in northern Illinois, on the Waukesha sub, Canadian Pacific line, the former Wisconsin Central Ltd. Greg Inciardi.
