      One of the few games that made me physically cringe at some of the "hornier" moments, but also kept me oddly interested all the way through with some genuinely great ideas.

      My original thoughts upon release was “Yes, we’re finally returning to the roots of the Taroverse.” Then we are given a game that feels like the majority of it is a comedy special. Maybe that was Taros vision all long, who knows.
      Overall, slightly disappointed, but the better combat, music and additional lore saves it for me.
      Highly recommend reading the Drag-On Dragoon Utahime Five manga along with playing this game. Gives the characters a little more depth not found in the game or DLC.

      The main character comes off as vulgar, violent, mean-spirited, selfish, and just generally unlikeable right off the bat. And I remember many people just bouncing off the game for that reason. When you find out why she's doing what's she doing it's so unbelievably tragic. I've never had such a complete 180 in how I feel about a main protagonist. She's one of my favorites.

    Keichi Okabe needs to be mentioned more. The music for NieR & NieR Automata are always praised, but his name rarely mentioned. Anyway, his work on Drakengard 3 is up there with the NeiR franchise.

    With regards to the final song, if you have a decent sense of rhythm, you should be able to do it with you eyes closed, apart from the final troll note. It's probably easier to do it that way, so the visuals don't act as a distraction (although they are very pretty).
    I've enjoyed this retrospective series, but I'm disappointed you haven't talked about the weapon stories. Not only are they fun, but most of them fit into the general theme of "people that resort to violence come to bad endings" that permeate the series.

    A thing that is worth noting is the differences in the dub of Zero's character as well. In the english, her anger and irritated exterior is is focused in the voice direction. The japanese dub on the other hand has far less energy and emotion. Like someone saying murderous stuff in a smooth and unmoved tone. Based on how you point out that zero basically had her being divided into the five sisters, it makes a lot of sense. Why they did this is hard to say, both versions have merit, but I could imagine the idea was to make her resemble kaine from nier: replicant. I don't know if you know this already or find this worth using for the full series video.

  • @PalaDave99

    It never fails to amaze just how much creativity and heart there is in these games (Nier included). I really can't wait to see what modern games will gain this type or cult status later on.

      Crucial yes, but part of the side content rather than in the game proper. I think this video wanted to focus on what we learn from the game and its DLC, not from the audio dramas, novellas, and manga. I hope he touches on these in future content, but for now this is what a typical player would know from playing Drakengard 3.

    It's hard to understate how important the Ending theme songs are for each route, from Drakengard 1 all the way through here in 3. Ending C pulling out Growing Wings/ Exhausted just to hammer home how royally SCREWED the world is after its events hits like a truck, just like it did back in Drakengard 1 Ending B.
    And for how hard the Final Boss rhythm game was to overcome, as many hours as I lost... it was worth it. This Silence Is Mine is powerful, and a reward well, well earned.

    • @Godzilla_Star_Eater
      @Godzilla_Star_Eater 3 месяца назад +2

      Zero wanted to die, but was being kept alive by a flower. That's already a horrible tragedy, being unable to end your miserable existence. Then she gets the burden of responsibility of hunting the intoners and raising a dragon to end her, just to earn that silence. Her happy ending is her blissful death. She actually smiles at Mikhail before transforming, because she's actually proud of him, and because she will finally get peace 😭

    Ive never played this series but this video, amazingly done, makes me want to. So thank you for that, that's a new like and sub well earned.
    Also as a side note, on the fact that we are conditionned to kill in games : it is funny because it seems to me Taro explored what would become a decade later the core experience of the Last of Us 2.
    They really amped the empathy for enemies you kill up but I find it amazing Taro had already a good idea a decade ago of how to do it given the npcs seem to be speaking lines of dialog about begging for mercy and such. In the Last of Us part 2, they went as far as giving every npcs names they use to call each other when one is missing, and they display every human behavior when threatened to be killed : scared, bargaining, deceiftul (telling you they wish for mercy then hitting you as soon as you start walking away...)
    I love it when creators use others ideas and push the boundaries a bit further.

    Thank you so much for covering DOD3. Zero is my favourite, and what a coincidence; NieR:Reincarnation has its Gala Event, and with one Mama Medal you can choose your one favourite: and one of these characters is also Zero! So happy to see that Square still cares about her, and hope that we get a remake as well. Although I hope that this time the setting will be more serious in tone, as the original is… sometimes just too 4th wall breaky? And I feel like it doesn’t take itself seriously at times ;u;

    In case you didn't know, the performance issues can actually be fixed on emulator, if you Google something along the lines of "RPCS3 Drakengard 3 configuration", you'll be told exactly what settings to change to reduce the jank, I did it and had literally Zero (heh) performance issues.

Then proceed to sync up the video's audio to my television so that I could time my button inputs while strictly watching the youtube video the entire time. I dare say it's the first and last time I'll ever play a video game that makes me have to completely ignore the game itself to focus solely on a separate monitor in order to beat the final battle (or any battle for that matter).

    Geez, as a fan of the first two games, I cannot understate just how much I dislike "Drakengard 3". It might have the best visuals and gameplay (technically) of the three entries but damn did I find just about everything else miserably terrible. From nearly every character being thoroughly unlikable with little-to-no depth past their surface elements, to the story that outright contradicts aspects of the entire series, the performance (brought to us by Access Games of "Deadly Premonition" fame) should be self explanatory, the constant sex jokes and potty humor...I struggled to get through this back when I played it. It is by far one of my most disappointed and disliked games.
    The only thing I can even say was remotely enjoyable was the OST but even that's been traumatized for me due to the troll-ish final boss.
    If I ever needed examples to point towards where the developers themselves felt like they actively didn't want to make the games, I'd have two examples: the recent "Redfall"...and "Drakengard 3". I guess that might appeal to some, I do know people love their ironic enjoyment of disasters, but I'm not one of those people.

    • @nightwish1453
      @nightwish1453 Год назад

      what are your thoughts of D2 compared to D3? as I know a lot of people hate 2 more than 3 (to the point some don't even see 2 as a drakengard game) for mostly similar reasons you have for 3 except for 'unlikeable' is switched out on the lines of not liking the happy tone D2 has compared to everything else in the series including Nier. To me they feel more on par to the cast of D1 then ones of D2 especially when you throw in Nowe and Eris in there which aren't really as morally grey as the likes as the other main casts of 1 and 3 and most of the cast in those games are either victims caught in a very terrible situation or someone that's has a bit of an edge.
      To me the cast of d3 feel more like d1 then the new characters that are in D2. D2 was in this weird place when Nier came in and was in this different universe and to many they preffered it over D2 and D3 ended up making it relevant again in the most subtle way. Also add that D2 does contradict an element of the ending it was based on where it's based on ending A but Furaie and Inuard made it to bone casket which is only visbly seen in ending B but it's played out differently.

    I will say it is kinda bull with the final note being so far behind the rest. Even if some people can play that section with their eyes close, I am proud of how far you have gone!
    Edit: Also, it seems emulation is the best way to play, since the game just runs better?

    I don't understand something. Why are there so many modern buildings in the last fight against the flower?

      In the lore, basically the city just kinda appeared out of nowhere and with it came the magical elements seen throughout the Drakengard games. There is a massive theory that it is actually a city from the Nier universe somehow brought over to Midgard essentially turning the main timeline into a time loop, how it would get there? We really don't know but it is an interesting idea that kinda fits the existential themes seen in the games plus the idea of each game being a new game to fit in with Yoko Taro's theme of deconstructing gaming with The Draken-Nier series.

    Yo do Nier Replicant next. I just finished it and could not get over what a buzzkill Nier himself was. The whole world has to stop for you and your sister but you get to decide what conversations are appropriate.

    Drakengard 3 never clicked with me, alas. I like the troll rhythm boss and that is it. Even then it is only because that boss is so fucking barmy.

    Oh! I love Drakengard but couldn't bring myself to play this entry. Zero's offensive behavior made me feel TOO uncomfortable... not even the humour helps... x_x she's just TOO crass.
    Yes, by watching your video, I know I'm spoiling the plot to myself. But yeah the plot seams so cruel and mean spirited. Like, unspeakably hateful and evil. Zero is just too abusive and nasty as a protagonist, imo. Even after knowing the full story. This is one of those "Thanks, I hate it" - stories for me...
    Also, is "coomer" a new term for "pervy" ? Sorry, Son, I can't keep up with the youth's new lingo.. ^^;

      I recommend you to read zero's novella... this one explain why she was the way she was... but in a little spoiler... she literaly didnt knew better... also she tryed her best to make easier for Mikhail to kill her, even as Michael she knew that she was asking a lot from him.
      Other also blame the localization, Zero in japanesse come out as unpolish but caring... but the localization and dub make her come as vulgar and anoying...
