    19:56 You have to remember that the Wampa cave was the first time we even saw someone lift an object with the Force. Asking him to try and use it on an ATAT feels like a modern perspective on the Jedi's powers. Yoda lifting the x-wing is treated as an epic feat in Empire

    the battle of Hoth acrually does serve lukes story. In the battle, his gunner Dak dies. When they are paired up together, Dak shows his excitement to fight the empire, very much like how Luke was in a new hope. Seeing dak die effects luke by fearing for his friends deaths

      @thegoldman25 id agree, if not for the fact there was a prolonged look of anguish or sadness on lukes face when dak was shot, and even when the speeder crashed he tried to save him, but the at-at (empire) force him to leave his friend behind

      Dak is Luke from the first film. Luke sees himself, responding “I know what you mean” when Dan says he could take on the whole empire.

      I think dak dying is also an early sign that Luke isn't invulnerable and that it won't be as easy for him to beat the empire this time around. His current skills and rebel ways won't be enough, so he has to go to dagobah to learn the skills to save his friends from the same fate as dak

    Regarding Vader questioning if Luke is his son during the special edition, my head canon explanation is simply he just hasn’t grasped an understanding of how he could’ve had a child knowing Padme had did before she gave birth. Yes, he finds out long before in the canon comics, but that’s my take on it.

    Empire Strikes Back is a monumental film in film history IMO. A dark middle chapter of a trilogy that does what a great sequel should do - expand the universe, deepen the lore, put main characters into difficult challenges, and ends on a cliffhanger that make you wanting more (but the pay off in RotJ is somewhat of a let down)

    Luke's co-pilot dies, his ship gets shot down, and he almost gets stepped by the Empire.
    This shows how much Luke can struggle in a dogfight.
    It's not characterization persay, moreso just dramatization, as it adds to the running theme of failure in this film.

    20:16 I'll have to disagree here. I don't think Luke should be that idealistic yet. Luke's motivation is more that he'll do anyway to protect his FRIENDS, not necessarily the rebellion. He of course believes in the cause the rebels fight for, but more personally, Han and Leia are his found family.
    What I'm trying to get at is Luke being driven to protect his friends has more poetic symmetry with Anakin than if we were to muddy the companion with nameless rebels.
    Maybe you could name the rebels and have Luke make a friendship with them before they all die, but that would add more fluff to the first act of this movie.
    Let's see... here's an idea how we can make Luke seem more impatient and brash.
    Luke's co-pilot has that one line before the battle on hoth, "I feel like I can take on the whole empire myself."
    Maybe you could have Luke more adamantly agree with him, to the point that they're boasting about it as they're flying around blasting kills. Then when The co-pilot dies it's like an, "oh dang" moment for Luke. Then they crash the ship, and its clear to the audience that they were getting too cocky.

  • @licemere9899
    @licemere9899 3 дня назад +1

    In defence of Luke participating in battle of Hoth: it worked for me to trick me as viewer into thinking Luke is that all-winning hero. Sure, he was just captured by a wampa - but science then we briefly see him overcoming the difficulties (escaping wampa, then successfully fighting against empire), we (and Luke) belive that his high confedence could be right and that he could have won, only later to see how wrong was this feeling

  • @DGalious
    @DGalious 3 дня назад +1

    The battle of Hoth was an important scene for the movie to demonstrate that the Empire is not just a formidable opponent but actually a major political and military force in the galaxy. Which set the scale of the challenge for all the key heroes, not just Luke, but Han and leia as well. Otherwise their wander from corner to corner is not justified.

    What makes Empire one of the best sequels ever? I'll tell you what makes it better than the original, because it's simple: the characters are more fleshed out. It's a tighter pace. More "happens." Furthermore, it's actually funnier. It's more romantic; more philosophical. On top of that, the effects are top notch, and--for the most part--still hold up today. The score is better; building on Star Wars' themes and expanding upon them with new cues. See "The Asteroid Field," "Han & The Princess," "Yoda's Theme," "Rescue from Cloud City," and, of course, "The Imperial March." It's a rare, perfect film. The Empire Strikes Back may be the greatest film ever made.

    From my personal experience, having grown up with this movie, I believe the battle of Hoth is one of the best battles in the entire original trilogy. In fact, I would argue that that is one of the best in the entire franchise, aside from the prequels.

    • @thegoldman25
      @thegoldman25  3 дня назад +1

      it's way better than the prequels

    • @SpaZNinjA18
      @SpaZNinjA18 3 дня назад

      Imho, all the battles from the originals are better than the prequel battles. Sure, the battles in the prequels may look "cooler" with its use of more modern special effects (even though the overuse of CGI was and still is controversial in regards to its visual quality), but a lot of them are just either just generic but just large-scale (Main Battle of Geonosis and Coruscant), style over substance (Utapau), or just exist for action sake (Kashyyyk has no reason to be in ROTS and is not relevant in the slightest). The Battle of Naboo is the most creative main battle with the gungans vs. droids, but even then, Jar Jar is still crucial for some reason and the space battle is almost completely derived from ANH but worse, especially with how stupid it is for having Anakin not only be there at all for no reason, but be the person to singlehandedly win the space and ground battle all on accident as a 9-year old(and people call Rey the only mary-sue type character in Star Wars)😂🙄. The arena fight in AOTC was also cool, despite the stupid way Jango Fett died 😂.
      Each battle in the OT is unique in some way and doesn't have anything that doesn't make sense, regardless of one's personal opinion:
      ANH: Tantive IV boarding and the Battle of Yavin - Watching stormtroopers board the rebel blockade runner to capture Princess Leia and retrieve the Death Star plans then absolute massacre the rebel navy troops is an amazing introduction to the franchise. The Battle of Yavin, while simple in concept, keeps the suspense running with how the Empire slowly takes out each fighter one-by-one. That tension increases when Darth Vader joins the battle and Luke is eventually the last pilot. Watching the rebel pilots give orders to one another and use tactics is also cool.
      TESB: The Battle of Hoth - A great showcase of the amount of power both sides can give off. Even then, instead of being just a generic large scale battle where 2 side just duke it out to see which side dies first, it's a defense against impossible odds as the rebels try to hold out as long as possible so their transports can escape while the Empire slowly breaks them with their overpowering strength. Even Luke gets shot down and has to use unorthodox methods to take out an AT-AT.
      ROTJ: Sail Barge Assault and the Battle of Endor - The Battle on Jabba's sail barge showed how heroes can fight against a gangster army. Watching Luke fight Jabba's alien gang is awesome, while still showcasing Luke's imperfections. Say what you will about Boba's defeat, but it still makes more sense than how Jango died. The Battle of Endor is easily the best battle in the franchise. Say what you will about the ewoks, but in a franchise where a 9-year old can blow up a droid control ship without somehow dying and that a 2 ft tall green goblin can go up against sith lords, I can easily buy that small, but strong primative alien creatures can get the jump on and put up a solid fight against stormtroopers on their own turf, even if they would have lost if Chewbacca didn't hijack an AT-ST. The primitive methods used by the ewoks against the walkers and speeder bikes was both cool and fun, but most importantly, unique. The space battle is easily the best in the franchise, having both imperial and rebel fleets duke in out after the rebels realize that they were lured into a trap by the emperor. Watching the incomplete Death Star's functionality be revealed by the Emperor and seeing Lando take charge and use his own strategies to take on the Star Destroyers showed just how far he has come as a character. The chase through the Death Star's incomplete structure to the reactor and back out as the station explodes is very exhilarating and the effects still very much hold up and look better than many things in the prequels and modern movies. Top it off with both the best sequence and best lightsaber duel in the franchise with everything in the throne room and the 3 characters involved, and you have the peak Star Wars battle and final act. The fantastic speeder bike chase earlier in the movie also deserves a mention. The sound design alone for the speeder bikes is peak.

    Really enjoying your analysis. I like your point about the battle of Hoth and how it would've been better if Luke had tried to use the force and fails because he feels an AT-AT is too big and powerful. So then he resorts to just using a grenade. I never thought of that. However, I would disagree on two points: Luke didn't just happen to land near where Yoda lives. Yoda took over control of the X-wing and guided it where it safely crash landed. This is insinuated when Luke says, "all the scopes are dead; I can't see a thing'. I think Luke is being evasive when he answers Yoda's question about becoming a Jedi. At this point Luke is still dismissive about Yoda and doesn't value him yet, so he gives a sort of flippant, uncaring answer. You are bang on about Han & Vader: they were both never better than they were in Empire. We like Leia in this movie because she's more personal. We already know from ANH she is a powerful leader. Her character grows in Empire because it shows she is a woman struggling with her personal feelings while dealing with a strong antagonist. We can see her frustration and how she is trying to work her way through it. Great vids!

    I'm glad this movie was altered the least. I was genuinely excited when I saw ESB in the theater in 1997. Some of the changes were real head scratchers though. The line "you were lucky to get out of there" that was added to R2 in Dagonah is as baffling to me today as it was in 97. I didn't really need to see Vader travel to the Executor either. The Emperor hologram scene wasn't changed until the DVD release. For continuity, i get why the Emperor was changed, but the added daligue of "How is that possible?" made zero sense to me since the opening crawl literally tells us he's looking for him. He also tells Admeral Ozzel "I'm sure Skywalker with them. Idk, I really wish I could sit down with Georgie-boy and go through all of the changes to the trilogy lol. These days, if I'm in a Star Wars-ey mood, I will watch the Project 4k movies. I have no desire to see the special editions again. I just wish Disney would allow everyone to see the original movies.

    If Lucas wasn't involved w the OT I don't know if we are even talking about SW 50yrs later.
    Can u imagine Disney in charge of Return of the Jed????

    Agreed with you on the added lines from Palpatine. Love the change to Ian but the additional stuff is lame lol
    Disagree with your take on Luke’s role/character arc in the Hoth battle. The Hoth battle is the climatic end of the 1st act of the film. In this act, we see so much of Luke’s progress. He nearly dies from the Wampa. But we see how he is grown with the force and lightsaber. But even with his new power he still needs much help from his friends. Setting the stage for some of the best scenes in all of Star Wars. He does lose Dak during the battle scene. Which shows not everyone around him is safe. But even with that we see again, while flawed, he is still a force to be reckoned with by taking out the AT AT single handedly. It makes for his duel with Vader more climatic because he’s not completely incapable of holding his own. He shows a vast amount of tricks up his sleeves that definitely show up during the fight. I literally think this film is perfect, And that 1st act, imo does all the leg work to make it so.
    But anyway, great video as always Goldman!

    I disagree with your view that the Battle of Hoth doesn’t also relate to Luke’s character arch. The last scene we see of Luke in a starship in battle was when he officially became a hero of the Galaxy by blowing up the Death Star. During this battle, going along with the theme of failure, he is shot down (first his rear gunner, then his ship). Sure, he blows up 1 AT-AT with a bomb, but there are still at least 3 AT-AT’s left to wipe out and drive the rest of the rebellion land forces to retreat as well as everyone on in Echo Base.

    Lucas did make the movie for profits. He showed Kershner plans for Skywalker Ranch and said that was the reason why he was making the film and why it had to be a success. There was also never a "vision". Plot changed extensively during scripting. At one point Luke even talked to the ghost of Anakin! All this vision stuff is crap cooked up over the years by Lucas in order to make himself seem like this all seeing all knowing prophet and genius. He's not. All he wanted to do was to make a Flash Gordon movie and to become a millionaire before he was 30 years old. Lucas said so to his father when he tried to prevent him from going into the movie business, because he didn't see any future prospects in it. If Lucas has any gift it's in running a business, not in actually making movies themselves.

    19:55 the force doesnt allow you to lift AT AT walkers, at least not in the movies where its a subtle energy force instead of a video game power like the prequels/d+ shows. As a whole this movie blows anything else away from this franchise in almost any metric possible. Even watching the ugly lucas cgi versions, its still a near perfect movie for its time.
