Went from less than 1000 feet to 24 miles in just under 2 years, and 10 years later aircraft were in combat ! Thats amazing how quickly the technology was improved upon once that initial step had been made!

When Santos Dumont attempted to fly the 14-bis in 1906, the Wright Brothers had already built and flown three different heavier-than-air flying machines: 1) the 1903 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and flew 852 feet (260 m) in 59 seconds, 2) the 1904 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and was the first heavier-than-air craft to fly in a complete circle as well as covering a distance of 4,080 feet during the same flight. Aviation pioneer Octave Chanute Observed many of the Flyer's 2 flights, and 3) the 1905 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and flew a distance of twenty-four miles, including circular several maneuvers. The Flyer was Also the world's first aircraft capable of carrying a passenger.

On August 14, 1901, Gustave Whitehead, a German-born immigrant living in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was more than likely the first to achieve manned, self-propelled, sustained flight, somewhat under control, but did not have 3-axis control. He steered the machine by shifting his body weight from side to side. Some time after this flight the Wright Brothers visited Whitehead under the guise of financing his efforts (reported by a man who worked for Whitehead at that time).
My theory is that during this visit, Whitehead shared some ideas which led the Wrights to 3-axis control which they tested and built into their 1902 glider. Add the fact that there were no photos of Whitehead's #21 machine in flight - only photos of it on the ground. And zero original source documentation such as journals, letters, telegrams, etc.
In 1903, the Wrights added an engine and propellers to what was essentially the 1902 glider (they never considered propulsion a big challenge), and on December 17, 1903 invited a few spectators and had the high-end camera at the ready.
Kids, if you want to own the patents and make it into the Smithsonian, document your work... Thoroughly.

The Wrights didn't fly in 1903, they just glided, any image of real flight was from 1908, in Paris, never before! This is a distortion of the facts!

santos dumont didn't fly until 1909 when he built the desmoiselle 20 and added tech he stole from the Wright brothers. the desmoiselle needed a copy of a Wright Brothers propeller and wing warping before it could fly. The 14-bis was a failure. Go watch the original 1909 film of the 14-bis in Paris. no flight, just a short little hop. so santos dumont abandoned the 14-bis and built an entirely different plane, the desmpoiselle 20, which didn't fly until 1909. watch the original film and see for yourself.

I'm glad they finally figured out to put the top wing on to hold up the bottom wing after it got off the ground but the bottom wing was holding up the top wing while it was on the ground then when they figured out that some airplanes only needed one wing they saved money on not putting a top wing on or maybe they just moved the rest of the airplane to the top wing and just didn't even think about a bottom wing and mind over matter was then what was holding up every wing that can after that then somebody goes I wonder if I build a 747 will it fly and it did so that's why I don't fly because I'm scared because I only went to the 3rd grade.

Gustave Whitehead actually flew 2 years before bicycle brothers did in their brown pants flyer. And why did They have to use a catapult too get their "flyer" up in the air for their demo for the military? and why didn't they use wheels instead of skids...? for great inventors who worked on bicycles and made the motor's allegedly, they seem too be lacking in something I just can't quite put my finger on it. 🤔
