Don't be too hard on Iceman. There's a saying, "there are old pilots, there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots." Maverick kept losing because he was too bold and foolish. If his practices were real he died again and again. It was only when he learned to take his time and not go by pure instinct that he started to become successful... in both love and war.

    Blue,
In the training flight with Viper you asked why the "other guy" didn't communicate to Maverick about Jester. Here is why: during these training flights the two pilots are together as lead and wingman (support). In this case Maverick left his lead, Hollywood, to go after Viper which left Hollywood alone against a superior pilot, Jester - his instructor. Since Jester was a better pilot he was able to get the "kill shot" on Hollywood and go help Viper and thus he came up behind Maverick and got the kill shot on him too. Since Hollywood was declared "killed" in this training flight he is then incapable of communicating to Maverick because the dead just don't talk.

It was a box office success, making $360 million dollars ($800 million dollars) against a $15 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Original Song, Take My Breath Away.

HEy Blue, a music band breaking the rules in a concert is what we love to see. An artist redefining the medium of art is what we search for in this world, but a fighter pilot breaking the rules and being reckless in a military exercise or engagment is not what the doctor ordered. You can't go rogue when the lives of hundreads of your fellow soliders are on the line. That includes your fellow pilots and all the ground and support staff back on the aircraft carrier.

    • @StevesFunhouse

That's actually NOT correct. Discipline is required but, being safe and flying like everyone else WILL get you killed in an instant. Maverick's only problem was, he had to learn when and how to control his unpredictability. If all pilots went by the book ALL the time, then they would be easy to defeat, especially in a dogfight. Only when flying in formation do they (pilots) have to conform to a certain set of rules and actions, because doing so at such times prevents accidents and adds strength of numbers. However, in a real dogfight, being predictable is usually NOT what you want to be, unless you have or ARE a wingman.
In this movie, Maverick was still learning, just as Iceman was. That's why they were BOTH sent to Top Gun ... to learn. Maverick needed to learn control, and Iceman needed to learn to loosen up a bit. He (Iceman) got caught twice being unprepared in the movie, once in training (Goose's accident) and once in the final battle scene, and neither time was he able to adequately defend himself or show the skills that Maverick had. In both cases, it was Maverick who had shown he was the better, more capable pilot, and even showed that he learned how to recover from the situation that caused the accident ... something Iceman still is incapable of. Now, after he returns to become an instructor well, how to get out of that "jetwash problem" might be something he can teach others.
So, yes, in training and in regular patrols, you want pilots to adhere to standard flying techniques and formations, but in a real battle, that shit goes right out the window the moment it becomes necessary, especially when it's 6 to 2 like in the final dogfight, because 2 planes flying together makes an awful easy target for 6 planes to hit.

Maverick didn't blame Iceman for Goose dying. His line of "I don't know what the he'll went wrong" indicates that he was still unsure why the F-14 couldn't recover from the flame outs.
In response to Jester being upset over the "kill" during their fist HOP, he clearly stated beforehand hand that there was to be no engagement below 10,000ft. In the military, orders need to be followed precisely to ensure everyone's safety. That is especially important at Top Gun since they are a Military School designed to teach high level aireal combat.

    • @danielberger1378
      @danielberger1378 Год назад

I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about following direct orders and complying with the rules of engagement. However, I never really understood why Jester went into that deep dive after all.... the rule was the hard deck being at 10'000ft, simulating the ground, and Jester went there first. Even IF he had an actual problem, those should be communicated while the exercise was still running, and not at the superiors office.

    • @leffew2000

@@danielberger1378 being retired Air Force himself, my father once told me it's most likely that Jester was trying to see if he could Maverick into breaking the rule of the hard deck. He was aware of the disciplinary issues Maverick had aboardt the aircraft carrier.

    • @corymccarty8603
      @corymccarty8603 Месяц назад +1

Agreed. But it was a Hoe move for Jester to try and run out of bounds to keep from being killed. He just didn't wanna get his butt handed to him by Maverick on their very first engagement. He was also ticked cause he knew he got got and if it had been a REAL dogfight he would probably have just been REALLY killed by Maverick.

Cool reaction; glad you liked it so much!
The push to get Mav back in the air was for the same reason that, when a rider is thrown from a horse, they're told to get up and get back in the saddle - right away! 'Cause the longer you dwell on it, the harder it is to do, and the more likely they are to 'hang it up' and just quit and walk away ... which he came *very* close to doing.
Also there's a _very_ *very* fine line between 'pushing it' just because you like living on the edge and seeing how close to edge you can get without falling off, 'just because it's a rush' ... as compared to 'pushing it', where you're recognizing everything that's happening, and knowing where the edge is and *not* stepping over it. That's one of the things that Fighter Weapons School ('Top Gun') students (& *especially* ones like Mav) need to learn. For others ... they may need to learn *how to* 'push it', to get that sharper edge.

As much as losing his best friend, his only family, sucked, there's a reason they had to push Mav back into the air. The longer someone has to be away from a plane, car, bicycle, horse, whatever, after an accident with it, the more likely it is that they'll never return to it. Getting back up there is showing him that he can still do it, that accidents are horrible, losing people is horrible, but the job still needs to be done. A friend of mine's oldest uncle was a Marine pilot in WW2. He once said that of the dozen pilots he started with in his squadron, by the time the war was over he was one of three of the originals remaining, and he had lost count of replacements lost in the three years he was at war. Especially in the military, you've just got to get back into it and work your way through it. Especially in the air corps.
And Iceman has very good points. Iceman is reliable and follows tactical planning, so his wingman knows that Iceman is trustworthy and can be relied upon, so there's no worry about anything but opposition. When Mav breaks off from being Holly's wingman, he leaves Holly on his own. A plane alone is basically dead in a combat situation. While Mav's inventiveness has its place, his disregard for being someone that his fellow pilots can trust could easily get multiple people killed. That's the lesson Mav has to learn. Sometimes being the best is being someone good and reliable, because no one can trust someone who is brilliant but unreliable. That's why Ice won the trophy. That's why Ice DESERVED that trophy. Ice is one of the best and he can be relied upon.
And the accident wasn't Ice's fault. Sh!t just happens sometimes. And if Mav had been on point instead of flying wingman we all know he would have stayed there until he got his shot instead of finally properly veering off like Ice did. Mav was just a little too aggressive following up, and sh!t went wrong because of it. And the spin meant the canopy wasn't blown completely clear as it would have been in a straight fly eject. Accidents happen. People die. Even in training. I lost a couple of friends that way.

In the 1980s, VHS tapes ran around $85 to purchase. In 1989, Paramount teamed up with Pepsi to put in a commercial on the VHS copy of Top Gun, just before the movie began. Pepsi paid Paramount a significant amount for the commercial, allowing Paramount to cut the cost of the VHS tape of Top Gun by nearly 75%, from $85 to $26.95.
Unsurprisingly, Top Gun became the #1 movie to own on home video in 1989.

One of the things that made this film, so revolutionary for its time - And, in fact, was never again replicated until Top Gun: Maverick - was the fact that they used actual footage of actual Navy jets. I remember seeing it when it came out; the closest thing we’d ever seen was Star Wars, and that was made with miniature models. This inspired an entire generation of young men-and women-to become pilots. All told, the expense that was put into this film was a good investment by the U.S. Defence Department.

Reacting to the new one right after doing this one is a great idea: I'd say go for it.
Various bit of info in response to your questions:
(yes, I'm probably the British version of your friend who took you to the museum...😉 )
Not seeing how many planes there are on radar. That can happen, especially with the 1970s tech you see here. If two target planes are too close together, the radar can see them as one big target. Likewise, if one target plane flies right behins another one, the radar may not see it at all. Soviet-trained pilots were well aware of this, and would try to exploit it. The tactic the MiGs use in the final battle, of flying a 'normal' 4-plane formation with a fifth one hiding them, was absolutely something that real MiG pilots tried.
Special Effects. Nearly all the flying scenes were done with real planes: the 'MiG-28s' (no such thing in real life) were actually repainted F-5E Tigers that are used by Top Gun to simulate MiGs. The film had MASSIVE co-operation from the US Navy, since they (correctly) saw it as a great recruitment tool for them. Even some of the missile launches were real. Planes blowing up, being damaged or in a flat spin were done by the very high-tech method of throwing models off a ladder or suspending them on wires and fiming them against the blue sky.
The Accident. It wasn't anybody's fault, except maybe the Pratt & Whitney engine company's. The F-14's TF-30 engines were notoriously twitchy about disturbed airflow into the intakes and absolutely could flame-out (stop working) if you flew through the turbulent jetwash (exhaust) of another plane. The design of the F-14 had the engines wide apart, so if one engine quit before the other, the asymetric thrust could definitely send it into a flat spin. When pilots eject, the clear canopy is jettisoned a second or so before the seat fires and is normally pulled well clear of the plane by the airflow. However in a flat spin the airflow above the plane is messy and complicated. What happened here is that the canopy stayed above the cockpit in that messy air and Goose hit it when he ejected a second later. Weird accidents like this do happen in real life. Ejection seats aren't perfect 'get out of jail free' cards: physics, gravity, aerodynamics and Sod's Law all still get a vote in the outcome...

Actually, for a moment, dear Trix, if you pay close attention, Slider says there are SIX MiGs against Iceman alone slightly after Maverick is launched. Maverick shoots down 3 and Iceman shoots down 1 (hence why Maverick says, albeit slightly mistakenly, “Whoo! Scratch 4!”). Two MiGs decided to retreat instead of remaining in the fight because they could not match Iceman and Maverick.
Also, just wanted to explain a couple things: during the training accident: Iceman positions himself to shoot down one of the instructors with Maverick behind as Iceman was leading the score list for the trophy. He wanted to secure a victory. It was not so much for following the rules. His sudden move accidentally creates a jetwash, a disrupt in the airflow of one of the engines. This destabilized Maverick’s plane and caused both engines to flameout and shut down, losing all thrust. This caused their fall called flat spin (Iceman says it while calling for assistance). The plane is falling vertically while rotating violently. During ejection, Goose hit his head with the canopy (surprised you missed it). It was partially based on a very similar accident in real life to a fighter pilot that was killed in the same way.
Nice reaction! Will look you reacting to Top Gun Maverick, AKA Top Gun 2.

During the filming of the movie, the actors were sitting in the front seats of air craft that had a modified cockpit that resembled the F-14. This way they could achieve the look of actually flying in a time before CGI was good enough. All of the flying was done with real Navy Fighters and pilots. Models were only used when the aircraft where blown up. After Top Gun, Tom Cruise got the flying bug and got his pilots license in 1994(?) He has since upgraded it to include twin engine, jets, and helicopters. He has always preferred to do his own stunts and has injured himself on more than one occasion. In 'OBLIVION' (an stunningly filmed, awesome) Sci-Fi movie that was filmed in Iceland, he crashed a motorcycle while jumping a sand dune. In a recent 'MISSION IMPOSSIBLE' he broke his ankle jumping from building to building. By the way, did you recognize Tom Skerritt (Viper) as Capt. Dallas from the original 'ALIEN'?

That was Hollywood and Wolfman. They got killed by Jester first, because Maverick was supposed to be their wingman but left. So once they're shot down, they're not able to communicate anything, 'cause they'd be too dead.

When Mav abandons Hollywood to go after Viper, he left Hollywood vulnerable to being killed by Jester, which is what happened. Jester then went on to take advantage of Maverick’s single-minded focus on Viper to pull up onto his 6 o’clock and take him out.
‘Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.’ In close-range aerial combat, ‘losing’ can very easily mean losing your aircraft, your life, and the life of your crew-not to mention anyone on the ground counting on you to complete your mission.

I hope you take the time and ready to Top Gun's sequel: Top Gun: Maverick. TG was a great film that I had the pleasure to have seen, as a teenager, in the theaters in 1986. The 2022 follow-up, TGM, is possibly one of the greatest sequels to have been made.
After your reaction, if TGM is still playing in a movie theater relatively close to you, then I strongly advise that you watch it there (and in the largest, most advanced, format available to you). TV, Computer Monitor, Home Sound System, Headphones, etc., will not do you, nor the film, justice.

In this movie, the flight scenes are real by actual pilots. The actors were filmed green screen. In the new movie, the actors went thru flight training for the G’s etc and were in the actual planes for the shots! It’s as good as the original, an actual plot with some call backs as well. PS: The early F14s were known for flameouts in flat spins and the canopy not clearing in that situation. Corrected on later models.

These are real shots with real planes. And they were really dangerous too. The movie is dedicated to Art Scholl, an aerial photographer who died filming the movie. They wanted real life pictures of what it would look like inside a plane in a flat spin. Unfortunately, he was unable to recover from the flat spin.
Do you really want the answer about not seeing the number of enemy planes on radar? The radar used on the early versions of the F-14 were designed in the mid-1960s and had two modes. One of these is a long-range scan and the other is a shorter range scan. The long range scan had a sweep that took a longer time and was not as accurate for smaller aircraft, especially those traveling at the same speed very close to each other. The radar system and analog computer from the 1960s was designed to track and attack large Soviet bombers, not fighters.

When they were filming this movie, the Navy agreed to let them film their training flights. They were only allowed to film very short and specific things, and the missile was an actual trainer they fired. So all the far out shots of the planes in flight are real, and the shots of missiles are the same shot being played multiple times.

Unfortunately this is not correct. The majority of in-cockpit scenes were in a mocked up cockpit in front of a green screen. Many of the aerial combat external footage was filmed with actual aircraft and pilots and was carefully choreographed, as was the standard back then for air shots. There was a lot of pioneering model work done for the planes and missile impacts/explosions, but no, Tom didn't fly in Top Gun. He DID take away an appreciation for it from a demo flight they were allowed to take, and he carried that into an interest in his later life.

Twice Maverick was Iceman's wingman and twice Mav decided to go rogue, trying to make a name for himself, and the result was getting Goose killed in an ejection accident. So in this case, textbook, would have worked and their F-14 Tomcat wouldn't have gone into that flat spin. But, it's only a movie, and it's all about the drama and romance, lol. I'll be looking forward to your next great reaction, Peace! 👍🎥🍿

Goose died not because of anything Maverick did. Iceman should have disengaged high and right which he didn't do. By Iceman choosing to disengage straight up, it put Maverick's F-14A right in the path of the jet wash. Ice killed Goose.

  • @Caseytify
    @Caseytify 2 года назад +1

You are, alas, incorrect about "by the book" pilots, especially in programs like TOPGUN. When you're pushing the limits like that you can't afford to play the cowboy and "do you own thing." Remember the beginning of the movie? He risked a $65 million warplane on a bonehead maneuver. Even back in WW2 rogue "cowboy" pilots were looked down on. There are too many ways to die in combat without playing the fool. That's what Iceman meant by calling Maverick dangerous; he could cause more damage than the enemy. Take the lesson about leaving your wingman. As Jester said, you never, ever leave your wingman, because now _they're_ not protected. The Germans had many tricks to decoy enemy fighters by splitting them up, then ambushing them.
That's why, when Viper asks if he trusted Maverick, Jester answered "I don't know." You can't trust someone who's busy "doing their own thing" in combat.
Iceman was _not_ responsible for Goose's death. Maverick was flying too close to Iceman in his eagerness to make a kill, and flew through his jet wash. As Ward Carroll points out in a RUclips video I linked below, the F-14A's engines were prone to compressor stall.
Aside from the beefcake for the ladies, the volleyball game was supposed to show the competitiveness of aviators. Successful fighter pilots are by nature Type A personalities.
That was Maverick's character arc, going from loose cannon to a trustworthy fighter pilot.

  • @TheBTG88

The plane that Maverick left didn't tell him the enemy plane was coming because he wasn't allowed to. Technically he was supposed to be dead/shot down, so he wouldn't have been able to if it was real and not training.
Everyone should subscribe to your OF after this because for all the tension the sex and flirting was causing, you are gonna have to find an outlet for that LOL.
Yes, the director used real footage of fighter jets and was on board the USS Enterprise for filming the aircraft carrier. During filming, he wanted the light to hit the ship a certain way and asked the captain how much it would cost to turn the ship around. The captain said "$25,000." Tony Scott, the director, cut him a check and told him to turn around. lol
The dogfights were filmed using in cockpit cameras and a Gulfstream private jet custom outfitted with a bunch of cameras on its frame.
Sad note, the film is dedicated to one of the stunt pilots. The director wanted film of the inside of a jet during the flat spin accident. The stuntman said he would do it, but was unable to recover. His last radio communication, as he dropped below minimum altitude for the stunt, was "i have a problem, i have a REAL problem." RIP

    "That trick always works!"
Actually, that is a fast way to an empty coffin. What looks good on camera in a movie is almost never a good idea in real life. In aerial combat Energy is life. Dumping a huge amount of velocity with a maneuver like that is betting that at the end of the maneuver you have a shot with high probability of kill. Had the missile missed, the MiG-28 (an actual F-5) would have been able to regain the initiative against him and probably splash him. The F-14A, while still a pair of powerful engines, could not recover from that type of energy dump without dumping the nose to gain speed, leaving it open to an easy kill shot when the MiG came around with its superior turn-rate at speed.
It's still a good movie, one that I grew up with as a kid and has influenced my love of aircraft and flight simulations to this day.
