Behold! The most comprehensive journalistic piece on Brotherhood of Steel ever made just a few days before its 20th anniversary! Huge thanks to Fin(for being one of the only people to have researched BOS’s cut content and inspiring me to look into it), Analog(for being one of of the few people to have researched its development) and No Bark(for help with renderdoc) from the Independent Wiki for help with this one, as well as RockWithAMedicineCup(for help with extracting text files in an easily readable format) from my discord and Kran(for help with cracking the Xbox rom) from the Van Buren Engine Research Project!
This video ended up being a massive undertaking due to how little of its prerelease information was preserved and that very little of the game had been datamined before. Some of the information and images in this video haven't been seen in decades or ever outside of the dev team. There are a few elements that I didn't get to include, particularly cut NPC conversations, but overall I'm happy with how much I could cover given the very limited resources available to me. Unfortunately BOS uses a different, unknown file structure than other Snowblind Engine games and the likelihood of it being reverse engineered is low considering the game’s reputation. It still has so many mysteries because we can't play the in-engine cutscenes, look at textures that don't get loaded into memory, check out of bounds areas, discover the scripting purpose for invisible NPCs, load unused levels or creatures, check animations, etc. Perhaps I'll make another video on it if it ever gets cracked. Also there is an oversight where I mention there's only 6 unique Pipboy images in game! There's actually a 7th Grim Reaper variant shown in this video at 6:18 as well :)
hey that's me you mentioned :)
look forward to watching!
this was absolutely worth the wait
I miss Tony Jay. His voice and talent in using it was unparalleled. If they ever resurrect the Legacy of Kain series it will be much poorer for his loss.
His voice and delivery was perfection
I remember hearing Tony Jay for the first time as the voice of Megabyte in Reboot (the original, not the godawful new series). He brought such an intimidating air to the main villain of the series, and then hearing him in other roles just cemented him as one of my personal favorite actors ever. The world lost a legend with him.
This is what the Internet is all about! A one man journalist diving super deep into something no one is paying attention to and showing how interesting it really is.
I actually like the mutant designs in this game, the ghouls with their melted twiced bodies. Or the giant freaky tall one. The super mutants with their lips chained to their chests to keep their lips open (like a cruder version of the headgear they used to have in FO1)
Yeah it has better design that it gets credit for :)
One of the only aspects of this game I remember is the uniqueness of ghouls and how they haven't before or since been so...melty lol
Particularly I remember two ghouls talking about how one of them had lost a "nut"
@@sinjin8576 i always loved how all the ghouls in this game have unique appearances and the radiation has affected them all in their own ways, it was such a cool look and it's a shame it'll never be replicated
For me, Im not even upset that BOS wasn't an RPG. I'm more upset that they removed every bit of world building from the games just to add in lower tier versions of it. And it's quite sad because Interplay has experience making the kind of game BOS is because they made Loaded and Re-loaded which are amazingly fun games. It's just weird how horribly tye development if BOS went.
It's the most basic game ever, the least it could use it some basic RPG elements
@@BioshockDrill I mean, or better beat-em-up mechanics.
Interplay only published the games in North America, Gremiln interactive was the Developer and Publisher in Europe. By the time Brotherhood of Steel began development Gremlin had been acquired by Inforgrames.
"Fallout:Brotherhood of Steel" wasn't really THAT horrible. My best friend and sat down and played all the way through it in co op mode. He's since passed away so I cherish the memory of playing through this game with him.
bro if it takes a dead best friend to make this game not shit in your eyes you may want to reexamine your standards
@@ExValeFor Nah, the game was as good as any other co op action RPG of its era. Played through it with my brother and we are going to do it again one day.
@@ExValeForor he enjoyed the game with his friend before his passing and now cherishes the memories of the good time he had with the game, and with his friend. There's enough idiocy and malace in the world, you don't need to go out of your way to fulfill both because someone dared to indulge in the slightest bit of sentiment
The metal music reminds me of a fallout fic where when nate is watching Kelloggs memories when he gets to the texas memory he overhears metal music and calls ot distasteful as a jab at bos
Nice catch
I think part of the reason why sexuality in Fallout 1/2 was less controversal was the restricted graphics, so things were only as explicit as the player imagined them to be. And could be taken as humour. Yeah I'm pretty sure some horny guy cranked his hog to the game at one point, but by in large it was mostly meant for humour.
BoS wanted to shift copies based on its sexual content and it shows.
Also how they arent shoved in your face, like if a normal person played would they even run into these events?
Meanwhile the Raider Matron just says "Use me as Target Pratice"
On the other hand, I can't really say the Super Mutant fucking you if you lose an arm wrestling match is of better taste than the Raider Matron's design. Quite the opposite, in fact.
@@LonelySpaceDetective True, but things like that and Myron's behavior are things the player has to find. Fallout: BoS really shoves it up the player's nose.
@@Mirthful_Midori You're not wrong, but the line of thinking here eventually ends up at "this character being able to roofie and r-word you isn't as bad as this other game having scantily-clad women because it's optional", which is a statement I really cannot agree with.
I don't even really like BoS's designs for a Fallout game and would agree that BoS is particularly adolescent, it's just that I really cannot get behind saying BoS's treatment of sexuality is _worse_ than previous games when they have moments like that.
@@LonelySpaceDetective I should probably clarify. I think fan-service is fine, but Fallout BoS gets flack for it due to it clashing with how previous games presented things. BoS is also really in your face with it.
It's definitely not worse than stuff in previous games, but it's substantially more blatant in how it goes about it.
BOS had cool cut concepts, the psycho ghouls stuff could’ve made a neat edition. Someone should mod that into one of the modern games.
There should be a game with a boss dressed exactly like that raider girl, filled with suspense leading up to the fight, only for her to die in one shot because she's literally half naked.
Lmao
Its not exactly the same, but one of the DLCs for Borderlands 2, Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, features a final boss who is a scientist in a lab coat and little else. You literally don't fight him, though, as he falls down the stairs before the fight starts as he monologues. Every time he hits a stair, his health bar drops until he finally hits the floor at the bottom of the staircase and promptly dies.
@@vahlok1426 there's also another similar death in that one annoying game justin royland was in right before his career completely evaporated where a bosses suit malfunctions and kills him when you meet him
@cheesemanthe2nd high on life. Yeah his boss fight is just a survival arena match as he was paranoid as to who would kill him. Even mentions in the end that the only person who would survive so long to kill him was himself i think xD
The raider badlands gear for the female model always reminded me of Nadia's appearance
Shame there's no good way to dump all textures or map data, I bet there's a ton of leftovers based on everything that can be dumped being full of cut/unused content.
Wow, that Tony Jay poem reading was awesome - I’d recommend uploading it as its own video since unfortunately I assume a lot of people would skip this video due to the game. Thanks for making this!
This game is full of tons of great voice actors that had done acting for Fallout 1 and 2
I only knew about this game because my local library carried a copy of a prima strategy guide for this game back in 2012ish. It was probably sitting in there earlier. I just liked reading about all the weird weapons.
That guide sells for a stupid amount of money on ebay now.
it later came out that the guy who posted "why not Todd Howard?" was in fact, Todd Howard
Really? That seems unlikely.
it just works
He did it again lmao.
I had to run this back to hear things twice more than once, thank you for all you do for the community.
💙💙💙 thanks bro :)
The whole thing about fans getting mad over lewd women in the game is really funny when you look at the front page of the Nexus of most popular mods.
Right? 😂
Gamers I'd like to introduce you to self-awareness
Loved seeing the updates and other community posts around this video, so excited to see the results of all your research and digging!
So excited to see it at last! Played BOS nearly 2 years ago all the way through, so I’m looking forward to seeing everything that could have been!
I forgot about BAWLS! Thanks for reminding me. I actually miss that drink.
It's still around, but I'm not sure who all still carries it.
@@Mirthful_Midori Every Micro Center sells it, so if you're looking for PC parts, just head on down there and you'll find it. Also, some Rocket Fizz stores have it.
Finally! I've been seeing your community updates about this video for so long and I keep checking for your new videos, I found your channel a month or two ago when I played my first Fallout NV playthrough & my first ever Fallout game, you're genuinely like the Vadim M of the Fallout series digging through all the cut content and development processes. Thank you for all the great content!
Thank you so much dude! 💙💙💙
The game may have not had that many pop culture references, but it is very much dated by the era it was published, as you demonstrated aptly in the video. Rushing to the console market, crass sexually charged 2000s language, gangsta speech, heck even nu metal, everything's there. Games industry and audience has improved but not much when you compare the releasing of this game to current titles.
I hope you'll make a video on the release of Fallout 3, promotional stuff, marketing, cut content shown etc, that part was very intriguing in this video
The game's audience has degraded, if anything. BOS was rightly rejected for being a cash grab, but there are people who will go as far as to defend Fallout 76.
People can complain all they want about what Bethesda has done for the series but without them this entry would have been the series legacy.
Tbf InXile tried to buy fallout but were outbid
They do good stuff, at least they kept the Wasteland and Bards Tale series alive
Fallout 3 and 4 the type of game you dump 60-100 hours and realize its a story they bought and use as a fleshsuit for looter shooter vs a actual RPg with choices.
Looking at starfield confirms they suck at making actual lore, its why their older properties just hold up better (existing lore to build on)
Or a competent developer could have bought them
Interplay was making a Fallout mmorpg until Bethesdas lawyers did what Bethesda lawyers do
The interplay MMO was dead from the start.
I could never hate Brotherhood of Steel. I knew what it was from the start. It was an emergency, very limited budget, fundraiser game. It was a 'oh crap, we need to keep the lights on' move. Honestly, it's dumb, but it's fun. The voice acting was surprisingly good for the time, and they got TONY JAY to be in it.
That prophetic comment about Todd Howard from 2004 is crazy!
Very good video!
I like to imagine this game exists in the fallout universe and was made by the BOS in an attempt to seem cool
Technically speaking Vault-Tec tying their indicia to a fast food chain seems weird. On the other hand, I could totally see them maintaining a line of overpriced nonperishable food they'd price gouge vault contractors on. Potentially even just selling it through restaurants as a side gig.
That would've made it work. Good concept:)
Been waiting for this one, haha. Great work, man.
Thanks bro 🖤🖤🖤
Congrats on finishing this. Looks good so far.
Didn't expect there would be one hour and twenty min of cut content of Brotherhood of Steel
20:54 he predicted the future
I would say half but like you look at Todd Howard when he was doing Oblivion, guy kinda sounds like he was too scummy for EA.
If only the game was entirely Tony J reading T.S. Elliot's the Wasteland I'd buy it.
Waiting patiently for the development and cut content of lonesome road
The concept of this game to me was not bad. I am glad you gotten this video out my friend. Crazy Titus is involved, they also did a RoboCop game.
I played some Titus games in preparation for this video, fun in a comically janky way lol
lol nice @@TriangleCity
hi could you give me the link for bos cut content dialogue?
This is fantastic! What a delight to see the finished product.
What's the engine for this game again, some obscure Balldoors gate thing?
Uhm, actually it's BAWLSdoors gate. Sounds like a cult to me.
I was not expecting to hear a song from the movie Oldboy in the beginning of your video, but it is very welcome
You're the only person to recognize it :))
the red Ryder line is very clearly the Vault Dweller, and I don't know if they sound more similar in the game, but the following lines do NOT sound like they are meant to be the same person
Where is the image in the thumbnail from???
Ah another Fallout development video. A favorite to indulge in.
Very interesting and well done video :)
Something on my mind though,
with all the hard work you put into this.. I don’t know anything about fair use and would appreciate being educated on it;
But is it okay to use all those game soundtracks for your background music?
It's a complicated subject and differs depending on the country. Its use has to be transformative and can't harm the original copyrighted work. It also depends on the company that owns the music, some songs are much more likely to get a copyright strike than others. For example the Fallout 1, 2, Tactics and BOS soundtracks don't ever get copyright strikes, even if you upload them without anything that would be considered transformative. The way I understand it you can't actually know something is fair use unless you get sued by the copyright owner and prove that it's transformative, but I've never had many issues with music. Using film clips is a lot trickier tho
Thank you for your response :)
I just wanted to make sure your hard work wouldn’t be interfered with.
Thank you for diving into something that is far more interesting with its flaws and poor reputation, being much less understood; It makes it far more fascinating than covering mainstream masterpiece media.
My friend and I resented the game when it came out, but gosh we were starved for the setting at that time..
Never would have imagined Fallout would find its throne in pop culture as it is seated today.
Take care! Keep up the good work.
Man, all these videos you've been making on this game recently have been super interesting. Having never actually played this one myself it's interesting to see what all was cut and what actually made it in. Though it's understandable the game was so controversial to fallout's core audience I always feel really bad for the developers and all the abuse they went through at this point over this game. That being said, it's a strangely familiar sight looking back at what went down around this game on Interplay's forums, and it really goes to show just how quick to anger and become violent fallout's fandom is when it comes to changes or differences in new and upcoming projects even before Bethesda's take over of the series. Of course, anyone who looks at the old NMA site circa fallout 2 could probably tell that right away, though I suspect it's probably the regular suspects from then that are still up in arms now for the most part lol.
I can recognize so many of the voice actors for The Voice lines you're showcasing
BOS has a great voice actor cast
I wish there was an easy way to track the music used in this video, some of them are so good.
I highly recommend Mitten Squad's "Can You Beat Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel Without Wanting To Die?"
Considering Mitten Squad’s currently pushing up daisies, that probably isn’t the best video to be recommending, bro. 😬
@@Jolis_Parsec "This dude died so you can't enjoy what he's made" actually shut up lmao
@@LarryLycanthrope I was commenting more on the irony of BoS potentially having contributed to his untimely demise, but please do continue to make a horse’s rectum out of yourself, bud. 🥱
@@LarryLycanthrope Look at the video's title and think again
He is jim, dead.
But seriously can i defile his corpse in Fallout NV?
It’s finally released boys. The long awaited triangle city vid
Super well done man!
One way to avoid contradicting previous lore is to just not have any lore yourself. What state does the game take place in? "Ehhh." When does it take place? "Ehhh."
it was really cool to hear those tony jay voice lines.
If I was a Fallout fan back then it definitely would feel like a slap in the face not just for Fallout fans but also for Console gamers. The thought that Fallout was too mature for console gaming is just, pretentious and feels wrong. To think that the only way for Fallout to be successful on console was to dumb it down just sounds like they think that Console players were not mature enough for Fallout. I know it was 2004, and Halo 2 was the big game back then, but that doesn't mean you need Fallout to go down to an "Acceptable level" for console players.
That doesn't mean that you should try and harass the devs and give them death threats though. That is never acceptable behavior, not even for something like BOS. It also doesn't mean Halo 2 is a bad game, It's actually one of my favorite games, and even has something to say beyond kill aliens and save Earth, but I was just trying to make an example of what games were coming out in 2004 and what people got out of it back then, which was that you were saving earth as a super soldier with some Numetal in the background.
Don't blame the devs for the dumbing down of BOS, blame Interplay for thinking that console players couldn't handle Fallout's themes and writing.
Bawls energy drink was really good back in the day. Haven’t seen in it over a decade though. 😅
Hey is that Dee Bradley Baker VAing one of the Psycho Ghouls?
Yeah he voiced several characters. Had a surprisingly good team of voice actors actually.
Thank You, I really enjoyed your video. A lot of videos like "Full Fallout History" say nothing about Brotherhood of Steel (literally. I once saw video where narrator said something like this "Well, let's skip this game"), so I even bought PS2 in 2020 specially for this game.
A Fallout game inspired by the games ‘Run Like Hell’ and ‘Mindgate: The Conspiracy’. Truly a mental hell
WE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS HELL YEAH
just as I finished school too...amazing
A the very least BOS's lore isn't forgotten. I believe it's used, albeit slightly altered, in Old World Blues, the Fallout mod for Hearts of Iron IV.
would be cool if fallout brotherhood of steel had some mods which puts the cut contents or new contents into the game
Ghoul having munchies on speed is actually crazy bruh smoking meth like it’s weed
I didn't even consider that lol
The cut perk "chemical brother" would have allowed you pummel enemies with "block rockin' beats".
lmao you win the internet today dude
Imagine putting yourself into such a dire predicament to where even freaking Titus Interactive is looking like your best bet for your studio’s survival. Interplay deserved to go under, just sayin’. 🤣
The video no one asked for, but the video we needed
That was definitely interesting. Too bad the game turned out the way it did. I’m sure if we got that cut content and a bunch of rpg elects it could’ve gotten a decent game. Maybe, not a good Fallout game, but it would’ve at least been better than the final product. Part of me would like to see a reimagining that takes a lot of this game’s elements and makes it more inline what makes a good Fallout game.
Right on for covering this your a hardcore fallout fan
I would take FO: BOS over 4 and 76 anytime. I always felt like this game didn't get the credit it deserved. It was a fun bashem up with a great plotline which was very inline with the fallout methodology. Remnants of the Mutant Army made by the master looking for their ultimate weapon: fertility. If they could reproduce that would be devastating in lore and we had an articulate, intelligent, and interesting super mutant villain. Now fev and supermutants are a meme and used as cannon fodder. It's a shame what Bethesda has done with them and other segments of the franchise.
Now you have to make an video called The content of fallout BOS, because we have absolutely no idea about what anything in the game is about :v kinda funny learning about the cut content of an game that you don't know anything besides the fact that it is bad XD
You can play it on PCSX2 emulator pretty easily or watch a playthrough :) I'd recommend playing it sometime
@@TriangleCity i prefer your voice :)
Didn't really need to take a death march down memory lane with NMA today. Great documentary. Wish didn't live through some of it. lol
This is actually how I stumbled upon the fallout series. I'm a fallout junkie now, so despite its peculiarities it holds a special place for me
49:50 Why do I feel calm all off the saddens?
Management that doesn't understand the fanbase and what sells and doing what sells and is sexy has been so prevalent in the industry for decades. We saw it with interplay and Titus, ea, embracer, Activision and so so so many others. It genuinely feels like the lessons are never learned and it's a cruel cycle that causes so much unwanted shit to happen. I continuously mix up tactics and b.o.s but I'll say this out of the two I prefer tactics by a landslide. Thanks for joining my Ted talk
LETS GOOO been waiting for this one 😤😤😤
Vaultboy's name was originally Pip-Boy, it's the modern games that started the Vault Boy name... Which I actually like more.
Nope. The Pip-Boy character actually shows up on the Pip-Boy itself. A red-haired character done in a similar style to Vault Boy, but with pointed ears and a yellow outfit.
You are easily the best Fallout RUclipsr.
Also the Cockney Ghouls sound hilarious, I hope FOLON will have some of that
Finally, the dramatic end to the BOS video arc.
11:30 pirates you say? holy shit imagine some of them come in on cars disguised as age of sail ships made of scrap metal
Everyone be quiet! The vhs started playing, this is important. 💚
The Diablo 1 music works shockingly well with Fallout
You can play Tristram music over almost anything and it fits.
13:49 Unfortunately ;p
1:15:36 that VA and even some of the lines are uncannily similar to Nikolai Belinski's VA from COD zombies
It’s more like viktor reznov
Should do a lore video on run like hell 15:53 . I take it as a prequel to dead space. Mostly for lols.
Id liked to have seen a spinoff like brotherhood of steel 2 maybe like gauntlet . Bos i enjoy the game . But the over use of enemy mobs made it incredably grateing to get through on og xbox.
The sad story is the cut content doesn't include the whole game.
BTW funfact. They used this engine without permission and was sued for copyright infringement.
The game is pretty bad and retcons a lot of Fallout lore. Like in this canon Nuka Cola doesn't exist and the bombs dropped in the 50s.
Where does it say the bombs fell in the 50's? It retcons the lore less than pretty much every modern Fallout game ironically lol
I think feminine and skimpy armor has a place in fallout but it has to fit with the retro futuristic style
Crazy to think that with a remake including the cut content and a bit of creactive changes m, fallout brotherhood of steel coul of perhpas been closer to fallout 3/4 in terms of quality and nay have been included in talks of the best fallout games, sad to see its butchered corpse be killed and sold as it is
Video is great so far! 2:05 consider a lower volume on the music though :)
Honestly, I love it a lot. It was a great effort to bring fallout to the console market. Then fo3 came out and actually did the things BoS wanted to do. I actually really like how much of the DNA of BoS came to fo3, like good boy brotherhood, working with slavers to take out mutants, things like that. I wish tod Howard had already bought fallout, since a lot of the better ideas and people working on a true fallout 3 for the ps2 and xbox would have been amazing. Then again, I just don't really jive with the crappy first 2 games. They always felt like they were unfinished
Bawls is delicious. If I could, I'd have Bawls in my mouth everyday. (innuendo aside, it's actually pretty solid)
It's here😮
I can't wait to crack open some bawls with the boys while cranking some slipknot
I guess this one got a Bawls/Slipknot brand sponsorship, right on bro 👍
They had to pay for the music rights, pretty expensive I imagine, especially since they somehow got the instrumental tracks lol
@@TriangleCity not necessarily. Usually label go to promotional deals. Infact they pushed Skinlab that in that period of time released Revolting Room. The license agreement can be different game to game. For example Dragonforce got paid only 100 bucks to use the song. I think the deal with century media was using the music not for tee but almost.
there's just something unavoidably funny to me about talking about Fallout: BOS with minecraft music in the background
"How about, open the fucking door"
My respect for Todd Howard would shoot through the roof if he hyped up fallout 5 for years and when they reveal the gameplay and come out with an actual trailer it's just a first person remake of Brotherhood Of Steel and as the crowd boos him he flips everyone off
would be cool if fallout brotherhood of steel had some mods
I don't think the development team was made up of plucky, honest Fallout fans who were treated harshly by unnamed corporate executives and vile fans. I think they just showed up to work and didn't put that much effort in. Granted, the vile fans part is true. People were fairly unhinged in the late '90s-early 2000s. But this game did not have heart. It was just a middle-of-the-road, phoned-in project.
Brian Freyermuth did a ton of work on Fallout 1, Charles Cuevas got referenced in the 2nd game and a whole bunch of the other developers started their industry career as QA testers for Fallout 1, 2 or Tactics, some of which worked on all three.
Another Interplay game I played back in the day called "Run Like Hell" had Bawls vending machines and pip-boy bars, if I'm not mistaken.
Does anyone else think Rhombus sounds like the Halo 2 elites?
I love metal! The music is so wrong in this game, though!
And, I don't think it's a bad as most people say. I have it on PS2 and Xbox.
the concept apocalyptic with sexual theme was interesting for edgy game. but the title was wrong. it shouldn't be merge with fallout. put some new original title like "Armageddon" for example
I actually love everything about the aesthetic in this game. I don't find it lore-unfriendly that Texas is such a depraved place in Fallout universe, in general the west is depicted as more scummy than the east.
6:39
So the reputation of X-Com: Enforcer was that widespread back then?
Fallout: Enforcer, yikes.
