1. Don't ask for permission
She graduated with a B.A. from the University of California. She double-majored in English and African-American studies.
2. Pay attention to your intention
While in college DuVernay became interested in broadcast journalism.
3. Love what you do
She became disillusioned with journalism, and decided to switch to publicity.
4. Change your perspective
She worked at FOX, Savoy Pictures and other public relations firms for four years before forming her own agency.
5. Include others in your dream
She made her feature directorial debut with the documentary This Is the Life.
6. Appreciate others
She began with documentaries because they can be done on a smaller budget than a feature film.
7. Take action
Her first narrative feature film, I Will Follow, a drama starring Salli Richardson-Whitfield, was released theatrically.
8. Put others first
Her film, Middle of Nowhere, was acquired by AFFRM and Participant Media at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

She produced and directed Venus Vs., a documentary on Venus Williams' fight for equal prize money.

Find Your Creative Process: Earlier today I started thinking of setting up a campaign to remove the word 'procrastination' from the dictionary. I found out that successful people do have the same protest. Ava motivates me to keep working on pulling myself out of that place. I plan to create without "permission" I am inspired.
