  • Part 9 of my journey into Rallying. Focussing on the preparation of my mk2 Escort. This car was sold to me as ‘mint’ and ‘ready to win your class’ which by all accounts is stretching it a bit !
    In this video I get the door post welded in, the a pillar as well. And a bit of work on the inner rear quarter ready for making a start on the ns floor pan.
    As always appreciate you watching and if you can like and subscribe that would be great.

    Nice steady progress what you are doing is where many fear to tread, there are not many who can do this and achieve that high level of workmanship, still a painful journey ahead but grit your teeth and you will get it sorted, it will be a stunning mk2 when it's finished 🏁

    Keep going, looking good, to weld a panel upto another one, lay the new panel over existing one and spot weld along every 3 inches then with a 1mm slit disc cut in between the spot welds at a 45° angle, then press the panel in which will now sit flush against original panel and line, the slit will be perfect for a weld seam, and just continue till all done, the overlap of the old panel.will fall out from behind. It's much like wallpapering and pulling out the join, hope this may help if you havnt done it already..

      Take it out the rubber and drop it in the hole and see if you have an even gap all around it, metal can be bent and moved the glass can't. The fit and look is more important the spot on measurements, they didn't measure up very well when new. You're doing an excellent job on it but remember what your using it for, it's probably going to end up bent again at some point

    Getting there slowly mate, with the tig what size tungsten are you using ? likewise with the filler rod ? Also if you haven't got one get a finger sander, its like a mini belt sander great for getting into the corners.

      @SmokingJoesRacing  26 дней назад

      @@MrVee66 2.4mm tungsten although I’ve been trying 1.6 on the bench. I’ve got 1mm, 1.6 and 2.4 filler rods. Just ordered a new finger sander affair got one but it’s not great so hopefully this new one be better 🤞

      @@SmokingJoesRacing With Tig and on thin car sheet metal 1.6 tungsten and 1.00 filler is best, that said dont get caught up into the fact that you have got to "Tig" everything, mig is much easier and to do and in some cases is better.

      @ i will have a little play with the thinner filler and tungsten. I just like the fact the tigs pretty clean, no splatter every where etc but id imagine ill have to start miging some bits just now

    When I have a big gap I clamp a piece of copper behind to stop me blowing through, and also you door hinges don't look to have the correct hinge pins in them, looks like someone's opened them up and put bolts in them, that's never right, mine had the same so I bout some 4 door doors just for the hinges and put the correct hinges on with new pins and allowed me to correctly align the doors,

      @SmokingJoesRacing just be mindful that with a modern day car you can swap say the doors or wings from 1 car to the other or buy new parts and they will fit perfectly with no problems, but with a classic car such as a mk1 or 2 escort this won't be the case, 1 door/panel may line up spot on then take another seemingly good door/panel and it won't fit right, just something to thing about
