I really appreciate you keeping it real and personal, with advice that not only helps the visual result but the whole experience for the guests AND the artist. You tackle the nearly unspoken stresses and struggles that come with the territory, both as a business and as a craft in which an artist toils with self-judgement. With these videos, I often feel like I'm getting an honest one-on-one pep talk with someone who knows my professional struggles without my having to say a word. Thank you for going above and beyond.

Kelly, thank you for taking the time to type out this comment- it means so much to me. I have taught many people to face paint, and by far the hardest obstacles have all been emotional- I know for me, trying to address it helps SO much! I used to tell my sister "I want to be a professional pep-talker when I grow up" Your comment makes me feel like I have arrived!

Hi, My second EVER face painting gig was a Kite Show, where I was hired to be this kind of entertainment.
I started at 10am, had no breaks (because I didnt want to disappoint any kids) and finished up at 3pm - an hour after the Show had officially finished.
I had kids and parents waiting an hour and a half to get to me!
I painted 51 excited, happy, gorgeous little (and a couple of big) faces in that time.
Now, I dont really know if I was super slow or super fast or whatever, but I had my back to the line... I think that was important... and my concentration was only on the child sitting in front of me.
I have been told that I did a terrific job. I loved almost all of the designs I painted.
I have now had my third gig, and I was worried about that too, but I think I was more confident - no.. I KNOW I was more confident - even though I was painting flowers on adult ladies arms!
Good luck to anyone starting out, this is truly a selfish industry we are in... selfish because I do it for the smile I am given! (the money is an added bonus! - On that... I charged $250 for the kite gig, and I thought they would go with someone else.... Don't undervalue yourself!)

Many of the tips you mentioned, I learned by default after struggling to find shortcuts to speed things up. But, I’m most grateful for you mentioning to stay in control and it’s ok to say No. I realized when I let the kid tell ME what and how they wanted something painted, that they were walking around with their artwork on the face, not mine, and it usually wasn’t anything I was proud of. I decided every kid that leaves my chair is walking advertisement for my business, and I can’t afford to let them ruin it.
PS… it’s almost always boys that want 3 different things painted onto their face and arm and look like they have stickers all over them instead of a DESIGN. 😂😂😂

I love this! I always thought I had to be super fast because it was just me and now I realize I can take my time and make a kids face pain truly special. I have waited to have my own kids face painted for 30 mins and it’s always worth it.

Omgaaah!! YAAS! I love painting with Denise!
It’s so hard to explain to clients that the experience is important to me.
I’ve had schools place several kids in front of me and want me to do literally a rainbow swipe down their arm just to finish the last 20-50 kids!! Lol they’re like “ HERE JUST GET THEM AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!”
As I say under my breath- “ oh you want me to compromise my artwork?”
    They don’t understand..
Just painted an event a few weeks ago with Denise.
It’s so laid back to paint with someone who is ready to present our artwork and not just fast or as many as possible.

Next: what if I haven’t figured out my pricing?
I am just getting started, never done a festival yet, booth fees, pay per face, events requiring a % of your earnings… what have you encountered, works well, didn’t work well, things to expect, money handling tips. Requiring a deposit? Invoices?
Would greatly value some advice 😁
And thank you for this video!
Super helpful to remember the Child’s experience is so important 💗

Maybe you can do: "Take a number". You can paint 6 Faces per hour and you are three hours there, than you can give out about 20 numbers? So nobody is stressed for waiting in the line.. is that an opportunity?

Laura, Do you work with a picture board? or a word board? I find a picture board, most kiddies will chose something pretty quickly. What do you do? I have worked with some amazing painters that use nothing, but I find it slows me down while kids try to work out what they want .

    • @fairyfox
      @fairyfox  2 года назад

I usually work with pictures- but any time a kid hesitates I say you can have whatever you want these are just ideas. When it is super busy I just let kids think that is all I do. Whenever I plan to change from the picture I just say “can I make it special for you?” Rarely get told no. Only time I use nothing is at a birthday party. Don’t love word boards unless painting with other artist and skill level varies- then words are great.
