The Pensioner Who Hid a WWII Panther Tank in his Basement

  • Collecting war memorabilia is nothing uncommon, but rare are the people that have collections as impressive as the elderly German gentleman we are going to talk about today. Under German privacy laws, his identity was kept a secret, being dubbed as Klaus-Dieter F. Klaus was a millionaire and he loved collecting Nazi Germany memorabilia. Guns, uniforms, medals, the things in his collection grew in both number and size and included things like torpedoes, 8.8cm flak cannon and, as a crown jewel of his collection, a partially functional demilitarised PzKpfw V Panther tank, which he kept in the basement of his villa. He had that tank for over 40 years, even taking it out to clean snow during winter, but in 2015 the authorities from Berlin found out about his collection and they immediately took action, seizing his tank and, under pretext that he violated "War Weapons Control Act", putting him to trial that would last for the next few years. Even though he had proof that the tank lost its weapon status, in the end Klaus was forced to either donate or sell it, along with the flak cannon.

      @@jacksont2040 suspension doesn't commonly break. I have first hand experience with many a platform of vehicles with more ground pressure than a panther. meaning more stress on the torsion bars. it takes lack of skill. finesse. and over a foot and a half of being airborne after 3+ years of hard abuse to break a torsion bar. and usually only one sometimes two breaks at a time. and i've personally never seen a support arm break. and roadwheel hubs and hubs in general only break when you do 30+ miles an hour with no oil or in some vehicles cases grease in them for a few hundred miles. then it finally gets hot enough catches fire. if you don't notice or dont do an at halt check and keep driving it will explode and you loose a roadwheel.

    A few note for those future comment readers. The tank was drug out on its road wheels not it's tracks which did damage (road wheels are only meant to contact the tracks) and Panthers are incredibly rare tanks with a number of suspension and transmission issues. • @roywall5231
      @roywall5231 Год назад

      Its problems were overstated by western historians. There are numerous war time and post war allied intelligence papers and original german documents that proved the panther was quite reliable and probably one of the best tanks of the war. Of course, making such a claim doesnt sell books or make for a snarky gotcha clip on some documentary. The French and a few others used panthers all the way into the 60s and 70s and their experiences were not of unreliable tanks

    In my opinion, he should've been able to keep it, his tank isn't a weapon until he treats it like one, such as the killdozer, a bulldozer isn't a weapon until it is treated like one. Should we ban all vehicles that use tracks? This was a machine made in the second world war, he spent a lot of money on restoring it and then waste all that time and money as a killing machine? I doubt it.

    • @zhufortheimpaler4041
      @zhufortheimpaler4041 Год назад

      well, you have to remember why the police searched his premises.
      he was under high suspicion of trading stolen state property (art stolen from the state by unknown people) on the blackmarket.
      Due to this his premises were searched and during that search they found multiple insecure stored operational firearms like MG42´s but also explosives and heavy weapons wich are illegal in private ownership.
      At the time of the search he could not provide the proper paperwork for his arms collections and thus all weapons (including the tank) were confiscated until he could prove that he is allowed to own them.
      Also keep in mind, that, when you commit a serious offense in germany, your licenses and permits for ownership of firearms and other tightly controlled dangerous goods will be void.
      And trading stolen state property on the black market is such an serious offense.

    I think the reason we haven’t heard abt the Panther since is probably because they had to restores the damn road wheels, and you know how that goes…

    Dang this made me sad to see all that equipment and the tank gone hopefully all that stuff is going to be in a museum and have proper care of the items.

    This is just NOT fair. The Tank wasnt able to shoot and Something SimpleHistory forgot. At the Snowcatastrophe the Panther wasnt Just driving. The older man was HELPING the locals. Pulling stuck Cars and Trucks. Clearing some streets of snow.

    So he didn't have any stolen artwork? They should have let his museum alone. Perhaps they owe him for all of his efforts to be a curator of history.

    If I would be the old gentleman. I would open my own museum and donate my stuff to my museum. With the entry fees he should get back the 250.000 € at some point if not more. Interesting enough as well. He could keep the V-1 Rocket but the Torpedo he also had to give away.
