The girl appeared in the "Approach Shadow" photo was his cousin and the diagonal shadow was added in the darkroom.
To understand Fan Ho's work and style, one has to be aware of that time period and more about him as a person. He was between 15 - 30 years old, an enthusiast, most famous works were for Salon competitions, master in the darkroom as many others (hence, those old chemical smell and sweats stories from film photographers), from a well off family that had a bathtub (considered Hong Kong living condition was 8 people per square inch) and able to spend the day taking photos, instead of working or going to school, believed in "...bring the mountain to Mohammed" approach, instead of today's "street sweeping" for accidental moments, etc.
Similar to other Masters such as Saul Seiter, he was an artist using a camera, instead of a photographer shooting with a camera. As anyone who is experienced in their jobs, there is no need to consult or follow the textbooks or previous teachings, but from experience and instincts. It isn't about breaking rules, but beyond.
I think an author once grouped artistic skill into three levels: Almost indistinguishable from the original (happen in the learning stage), become a masterpiece of its own (such as Houston's version of Parton's song, "I'll always love you" or Ansel Adams's Zone System vs. the general understanding) and lastly, beyond commonly possible. That means not achievable simply by working harder, but having natural talents that can create something new, better and able to become a leader instead of a follower. 🙂
