As anyone who is experienced in their jobs, there is no need to consult or follow the textbooks or previous teachings, but from experience and instincts. It isn't about breaking rules, but beyond. I think an author once grouped artistic skill into three levels: Almost indistinguishable from the original (happen in the learning stage), become a masterpiece of its own (such as Houston's version of Parton's song, "I'll always love you" or Ansel Adams's Zone System vs. the general understanding) and lastly, beyond commonly possible. That means not achievable simply by working harder, but having natural talents that can create something new, better and able to become a leader instead of a follower. 🙂
