My dad planted a culinary bay laurel in a protected corner facing SE in 7b. It grew HUGE and i never bought bay leaves for years. Then my parents retired and moved. I may or may not have banged on the new resident’s door and asked to cut some bay leaves.
Putting them in flour gives a not entirely pleasant flavor the next time you make a dessert, but I put them in rice, quinoa, etc that I use in savory dishes. Also, every pot of plain rice gets 2 peeled cloves of garlic and 2 bay leaves per cup of rice with the water and a bit of salt. That alone makes plain white rice delicious all by itself.

Hey Jess! :) I think that is a dwarf canvendish banana, which will fruit at like 5 feet! If you didn’t know already, you basically can’t over water or over feed bananas.. so if you want it to fruit there despite the freeze just give it everything you got! Some people even build compost piles in the middle of their banana circles. Hugs from central Florida. Thanks for all the inspiration 🥰

Oh my goodness! Jess, I just have to comment. This video brought me so much joy and made me not feel so crazy. Haha. Im the only one in my family who finds so much joy in living things - excluding my freshly 4 year old daughter who now plants every seed she finds in her fruit in my indoor plant pots - and the vast majority of my friend group. I often feel like I have to hold back my passion for gardens, plants, nature, and just natural life in general, around most people. I found your information about soil fascinating and will apply those concepts in my own garden. I also just love going to nurseries and walking through the aisles of plants and soaking in the joy they are giving off. I laughed with joy when I saw you got a pitcher plant. I convinced my husband we needed the same plant at a grocery store of all places about a year ago. Might I suggest hanging it above your kitchen sink? Or in a bathroom that has lots of light. I learned through trial and error that this particular plant loves light and also humidity. Once I hung it above my sink in the window it has thrived. It has caught many bugs on its own but I will always laugh at the times my husband and I have killed flies in the house and then made sure to feed them to the pitcher plant instead of trashing them. 😂 Anyways, I wish you so many blessings and I want to thank you for putting in the work of creating your videos for viewers like me. Who once felt alone but now feel celebrated because of your videos and the community you have created. Whenever I feel stressed with 3 kids under 4, a job, a household, and a mini farm, and honestly just everything going on with the world, I hope you have posted a new video and I sit and watch it as it brings me peace. Thank you and best of luck with your pitcher plant! 💕

And yes, banana plants are the world’s largest herb(which is the main reason I want to grow it. I’m a dork, I know). I hate to rain on your parade, but I believe bananas are berries. Each banana is a fruitlett, the whole bunch is a berry.
This does not mean it is excluded from the herb group, I aint no herbologist, you're probably right. Either way, they taste awesome!

@@mattpeacock5208 🍃Bananas are both technically a fruit and an herb. While the banana plant is colloquially called a banana tree, it's actually an herb distantly related to ginger, since the plant has a succulent tree stem, instead of a wood one. Rather, it forms a succulent stalk, or pseudostem. The pseudostem begins as a small shoot from an underground rhizome called a corm. The yellow thing you peel and eat is, in fact, a fruit because it contains the seeds of the plant.
Because the fruit is produced from a single ovary on the flower, a banana is actually classified as a berry, scientific botanically speaking.
Botanical berries not commonly known as berries include bananas, tomatoes, grapes, eggplants (aubergines), persimmons, watermelons, and pumpkins.
So, bananas are berries and raspberries aren't. Who knew?🍃

You can take cuttings from your bay tree and they will grow easily. I have three bay trees that I grew from cuttings and they have been in pots for over thirty years. I have shaped them like lollipops and they are about five feet high. Every spring I cut 80% of the leaves of which I dry and give to friends, within six to seven weeks they have grown back the leaves completely. Approx every four to five years I root prune them too.

My dad was an avid fruit gardener, so I grew up with a huge orchard of a big variety of fruit trees, we also had a hedge of Pomegranate and Quinces on our back fence. SO my mom made jams and canned fruit every year and we even made fruit leathers. Then also a small vineyard with about 6-8 varieties of grapes.

That was a fun outing. Thanks for taking us along! I have a Bay Laurel planted in the ground in north Houston, zone 9a. Except for the February 2021 freeze, it has been evergreen here. Since it grows as a dense large shrub, I use it as a screen on my back fence line.
I cook with fresh leaves, but I do dry a few for Indian recipes. Besides Cajun recipes, I add them to beef stew and pot roasts, when cooking chicken to debone for casseroles, in America’s Test Kitchen recipe for Smashed Potatoes, and numerous other recipes. I put leaves in my flour and cornmeal containers. It has been one of the wisest plant purchases I made 20 years ago!

If you have a potted plant saucer to fit your passion flower pot, turn the saucer upside down, cut it toward the middle to match where the stem is to your plant. Cut the hole to match the size of stem, then enlarge it so it is big enough to accommodate the stem and to be able to water the plant, also. Slide the cut part over the pot (upside down) to make a lid over the pot and presto, it is cat safe. I hope explained this so you can see my vision. Or, use a thick paper plate, do the same thing but just leave it inside the pot resting on the soil. Love the baby goats, so cute!

I have been grieving a VERY sudden loss if a vibrant woman of God who went to the doctor and was dead a week later.
In want to to know I'm so thankful for you. I just realized I haven't breathed since this happened a week ago. You provide that safety for me and I am thankful. God bless...

Hi Jess! You've really inspired me this year. I've gardened for years, very small scale, but never started seeds indoors. I have THREE cats (two young kittens) and was wondering HOW I was going to do that this year. My son works at Rural King, and got me a $40.00 small green house from there. I have that set up in my family room (left the bottom shelf off) with heat mats and lights. The door zips down completely to the floor and KEEPS the cats out... so far. They're not showing much interest so far. I have lots of tomatoes sprouting and my peppers have started too! I'm pretty excited!!! I'm going to be up potting very soon.

Good luck! I have my greenhouse in our Living room, right where Living things should go, right?

With some mild & even warm days - mid & upper 50s & one that hit 60, Spring is in the air. Still, we have snow on the way, here in Zone 5B New England. Still appreciate the reminder that it's time to start some seeds. 🌱

Jess, you should get lupine and plant them by your pond. They will multiply 💞

I always keep bay leaves in my pantry ever since I had a flour weevil problem one year. Once I cleaned everything out I put bay leaves and have never had another issue since

I start seeds indoors with three cats and I use a dog crate! I put the trays inside and hang grow lights from the top of the crate. Once the seedlings get big you just have to watch that they're not too close to the sides because they will stick their paws in there and try to chomp on leaves. But for the most part it works great!

Hey Jess! I meant to write this yesterday on International Women's day but thanks for being a inspirational woman! You are strong but real and that gave me courage to go back to school for Horticulture. We are doing soil samples in my soil class like you did in a video. It is fun to hear you are learning very similar practices as I am. In my small scale farming class we are reading a book called Market Garden by Fortier (I have your book as well of course!). I thought you may want to read it. He uses a bunch of tools like the broad fork that protect the soil and he manages his land that aligns with your own ideas. Easy book to read. Anyways, thanks for being you and for teaching us!
    Ashley

I now have three Seven tray units and have been harvesting salad most of the year here in Florida as we started end of November with the Green stalks. Love love them, bought a few for my kids homes for the holidays. Oh and bananas, put them down at the pond - they love water and they are trashy beautiful. Each time they throw a hand, that whole stalk will die and become fertilizer for the stand of bananas. And red bananas do yield fruit, we have one and we’re told the same, that it would not produce fruit - we are near Orlando and it does briefly freeze here.

Right on about the bay leaf. I’ve used it in my flour storage for many years and never seen a weevil. It works.

I have a similar temporary green house, but I got the hexagon shaped one on Amazon and there is a ton more space and it seems to not blow away as easy as the rectangular ones do. Great video as usual and I can't wait to visit a nursery. Being with all the plants is such a great feeling. ☺️

Most of my seeds that I planted in the house are up now! Still waiting on habanaba peppers and a few others. So excited and yes, I check them two or three times a day!

I love seeing how excited you are to go to a nursery! Warning... That passion vine will go absolutely crazy, and vine all over the place! Plan accordingly. I'm in south Florida and definitely didn't give mine enough room to spread out.
I can't wait to see how yours looks once it gets going!

I'm from Massachusetts and the snow is barely off the groung, but my daughter and I are itching to go to our local garden centers. We just barely avoided making a BIG mistake this weekend by resisting the urge this past weekend. It's so hard to wait.
