I met a man that moved to Alaska to die. Doctors told him he had 8 months to live due to 2 types of cancer. (Bone being one & I can not remember the other) He moved to the famous Kenai River to live his dream. He ate only organice fruits, veggies & salmon from the river. 15 months later he decided he needed a job. 2 years in he was cancer free. Just one nice story.

I've been on a keto diet for two years after being diagnosed with diabetes. I had bee eating what everyone would have considered a healthy diet before that --- lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, a little bit of low fat dairy products, and positively no processed foods. Unlike almost every other diet I saw I decided to give keto a try because no one was selling a thing --- except getting healthy. And healthy I am now. I have my diabetes completely under control, my cholesterol is incredibly low, I went from needing meds for high blood pressure to no meds and blood pressure that is excellent. I have not had an asthma attack since starting this way of eating and have not had a single cold or flu. I feel better than I have in decades.

Hi., great this works for you! Did you had a hard transition time to keto?
For me, my digestion does not work good on keto or paleo. And on 75% fat-20 protein and 5% KH I did keto but got soo sick. Hair Loss. I took lot of electrolytes and vegetables... But strange digestion and I really became to smell very bad.
So annoying. Because my pains vanish... Hope to hear if you had symptoms in the beginning.. Thanks

Same here , Keto reversed my diabetes in six months. What people need to understand about Keto there is different levels of it. You can be completely strict to less than 20 grams of carbs per day. Or you can go somewhere in between like 50 grams or 100 grams per day. You can also do a bit less fat and sub more portein in it's place. I find what worked for me was strict initially and once I got my weight and A1C down to ideal I started slowly introducing good carbs back in. Once I feel like I'm starting to gain weight again I will cut back on the carbs. But your mileage may vary. Everyone is different and may have a different goal. Mine goal was getting my Hemoglobin A1C down below 6.0 which I did on Keto .

Diabetes -- Solved by not having processed sugar. Blood pressure -- Solved by not having sodium from processed foods. So, it makes sense those would happen on Keto. But "cholesterol incredibly low"? I'm betting you mean good cholesterol there.

in six months on Keto, I lost 87 lbs, waist size from 46 down to 37. My A1C from 10.2 to 6. My triglycerides plummeted after the first three months and my HDL increased. Doctor did liver test and it came out that my liver is now heathy. I used to have fatty liver.

Like many I’ve wondered how much of the positive benefits of keto & paleo diets can be attributed to the elimination of processed foods.
Eliminating (or sharply reducing) sugar, salt, - and many fats (especially refined, unhealthy fats) can do apparent wonders, especially for anyone who is on a SAD diet.
But that isn’t unique to either keto, paleo or any other specific “lifestyle diet” as long as it gets rid of JUNK.
But when advocates of the paleo/keto school claim that plants are trying to kill us (!!!) I just have to laugh . . . and have regular bowel movements (unlike the constipation I had when I tried keto for 2.5 months as an experiment).

I went on a Keto diet when my Doctor told me I was pre diabetic and had high blood sugar and blood pressure. It was a struggle and I craved sugar 3 days in like a drug addict. 2 months on and my blood sugar is in normal range, I have lost about 10 lbs of fat, I feel a lot better and my blood pressure is in normal range. I now avoid sugars and processed foods where I can and it has worked for me big time!

This is an anecdote and anecdotes are often misleading. You can lose fat on any diet provided you don't eat too many calories, and fat loss does lead to improvements in other markers, cutting refined sugar and processed foods will also help with that. The problem is that short term improvements like that don't tell you much about diseases with high latency periods, diseases like heart disease which are caused in part with high dietary intake of saturated fat and cholesterol which is why every major health organisation in the world recommends limiting it as much as possible.

@Christopher Har V Yup, i can eat a banana, apple, orange, pineapple etc when i want it. I just dont do it every day. That would keep me out of Ketosis. The advantage of Ketosis is that it helps your body reach a healthy state and then you can keep it there easily with workouts and eating healthy and even include these sugary foods (natural and processed) if you really want to. My desire to eat processed foods is really low now a days.
However i have noticed that if i indulge in cakes and pastries and pizzas then the cravings can start coming back. So yeah, sugar is actually very addictive in any format.
Keto helps me not have those cravings. Initially it can be tough to get rid of those cravings but once done you will be in control.
As for those who have reversed their type 2 diabetes, even they cannot eat sugar in any format (natural or processed) regularly. That is because their body is already compromised, Keto can help you fix it naturally without the side-effects of medicines. Then on an irregular basis you can eat, no problem. Its just that your desire to eat those items will not be there or at least it will be reduced.

A well planned and researched vegan diet did not work for me.. Keto has healed things I didn't even know I needed help with. One of the first things I noticed after switching my diet was for the first time in years, I stopped thinking about food continuously. When I was vegan, as soon as I was done eating, I was planning my next beautiful meal. And after that...my next beautiful meal...it gets exhausting. I cried when I realized I went a few hours with out thinking about food. It freed me!

Do keto and paleo not have alot of similarities!? Why does there always have to be these "sides" and animosity towards the other, to the point of debunking? Can't we just be happy that people are seiously questioning the dietary guidelines that we're given and are promoting more whole foods?! It's the standard dietary guidelines we should be fighting against, not each other! Otherwise all we do is create cults and scare people off from making healthier choices with all the confusion.

And I'm one of them you refer to who is alienated from ALL diets from seeing and hearing the non-stop conflicting declarations that "this" diet cures all and anyone not doing it is killing themselves. EVERY ONE of these stupid "diets" has a parade of doctors, experts and testimonials like they're the solution to all physical ailments, and EVERY ONE of these stupid "diets" has just as many doctors, experts, and testimonials on why it's bad for you. I'm sick hearing about ALL of them. I'm gonna just eat whatever I want and die whenever and however I do. None of you idiots know anything that isn't gonna be contradicted or proven false eventually. The only fact that's real, is that if you eat ANYTHING you will eventually die. I will never listen to any "diet" crap any more. I came across this video from one person screaming how great this "diet" is and someone else warning how terrible it is. SCREW YOU BOTH!!!

I think the main issue that informed doctors are nervous about keto, is the lack of long term studies showing improved outcomes. It’s wonderful to use a diet and get some short term benefits-so yes, let’s champion healing for sure! But we also have to be aware of the unintended long-term effects of certain diets, and when that’s the focus, keto is indeed very scary.

sarah littrell I’m so sorry to hear of your loss and wish you blessings in the future my friend.
Nothing beats a whole food focused, plant based and vegan lifestyle. 👌
I haven’t eaten meat in 13 years and I’ve been vegan for 7 years. I regularly get my blood work checked and it is consistently perfect. I get sick extremely rarely and I easily stay lean and have plenty of energy for the gym.
I always cook at home, we have a wide variety of yummy meals, that even non vegan friends come over and always love the food and are surprised that they didn’t miss the animal products. I am certainly not afraid of carbs, I love fruit but I also love stuff like lasagna, pastas, Indian, Thai, casseroles, sushi, burgers, pizza..you get the idea.
I’m also in my 30’s and I have difficulty at work getting some clients to take me seriously, because they assume in 23. I had a woman the other day call me “sweetie” and say things like “oh you’ve got your whole 20’s ahead of you”.

A proper keto diet is mostly low carb veggies, moderate/low protein and healthy fats. A lot of people do “dirty” keto, eating tons of bacon, cheese, processed meat and wonder why they feel like crap. The same can happen with a “dirty” vegan diet. People need to do more research before drastically changing their eating habits.

Jethro Tool so true...I eat keto and I do it without dairy. I am actually able to afford grass fed organic meats now because I eat more fat, and thus I eat less meat. I eat more veggies as well 7-10 cups a day. I eat seed bread, and nuts and stay in ketosis just fine. Oh, and eggs from a local farm! I cringe seeing ppl eating keto going to fast food places....the vegetable oils are highly processed and do cause heart disease and other health problems. Whole food in any diet is a must for health.

I am a type 2 diabetic who has tried many diets to try to get my blood sugars under control. I ate a vegan diet for 6 months, I lost 17 pounds, but my blood sugars were all over the place. I was really into it and very strict. Eating whole foods and limiting sugar... but I wasn't getting better. My A1C was worse than before. It went from a 7.2 to 8.4 when tested after the 6 months. My cholesterol also went from 187 to 221 in the same time frame. I loved being on a vegan diet and felt that it should be the best for my health, for the animals, and for the environment... and I was SO discouraged that my health wasn't getting better.
I have now been eating a keto diet for 4 weeks. I have lost 36 pounds. My doctor, who was concerned about this way of eating, as was I, wanted to closely monitor me for the first few months. I haven't had my A1C rechecked yet, nor my cholesterol, but I have been taken off of all insulin (was on 45 units a day of Toujeo) and down from 1500mg of Metformin to 500mg daily. I don't know why it's working, but so far it seems to be going well. The only down fall is that I don't like eating this way. I prefer the vegan diet, but it didn't work for me.

    • @karlwheatley1244
      @karlwheatley1244 4 года назад

That was weird. Saturated fat increase serum cholesterol and for people eating the diets that we have clear data on, high LDL is THE main CAUSAL factor in heart disease. But it's easy for people to get confused about serum cholesterol because of the flaws in so many studies. For example, what you are saying DOES appear to be true in studies that are contaminated by restriction of range issues (no large group with truly healthy LDL levels) or in studies contaminated by reverse causality (lower LDL IS sometimes found to be associated with higher mortality in the ELDERLY because several diseases and conditions that lower LDL also increase mortality). However, when you overcome those problems and study a population with a wide range of LDL levels, you see a clear trend, with higher LDL going hand in hand with more arterial plaque:
See: www.onlinejacc.org/content/70/24/2979 and particularly the very clear trend graph
That's cross-sectional, but what about experimental studies? The pattern across statin studies that lowered LDL a LOT is that both degree of plaque and major CVD events declined as LDL levels went down, and got towards the truly healthy range (apparently under 67, but a little higher may be fine too when people aren't eating an artery-damaging diet). See the trend line regarding the statin trials:
      www.onlinejacc.org/content/43/11/2142
That study also points out that an LDL of around 35-70 appears to be normal for mammals without heart disease, as indicated by the LDL levels of free-ranging mammals, newborn humans, and hunter-gatherer tribes, many of whom have TOTAL cholesterol levels under 130.
Other types of studies confirm a causal role for elevated LDL in the development of heart disease. First, a study of miscarried fetuses showed that those whose mothers had higher LDL had more plaque in their arteries. Finally, genetic variations that give most individuals (but not all) an LDL level in the healthy range wiped out 88% of expected heart disease, despite unhealthy diets, obesity, diabetes, and smoking:
Ference BA, Yoo W, Alesh I, Mahajan N, Mirowska KK, Mewada A, Kahn J, Afonso L, Williams KA Sr, Flack JM. Effect of long-term exposure to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol beginning early in life on the risk of coronary heart disease: a Mendelian randomization analysis. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2012 Dec 25;60(25):2631-9.
Cohen JC, Boerwinkle E, Mosley TH Jr, Hobbs HH. Sequence variations in PCSK9, low LDL, and protection against coronary heart disease. N Engl J Med. 2006 Mar 23;354(12):1264-72.
Critically, that research establishes that even when people have diets and lifestyles that SHOULD HAVE caused more heart disease, elevated LDL is the critical key without which heart disease doesn't develop. Other research shows that both large fluffy and small dense particles are atherogenic (large fluffy are only about 1/3rd less atherogenic for men and women alike). Finally, oxidized cholesterol is terribly harmful/atherogenic, and unfortunately, exposure to air or light as well as cooking and reheating meat leftovers all produce oxidized cholesterol. So the odds of eating high cholesterol foods and not consuming oxidized cholesterol are lousy.
Then there are the clinical trials in which serious heart disease was stopped and reversed in people with a history of serious heart disease and rates of CVD events were dropped to zero or close to zero using diets that are VERY low in fat (~10% of calories) and have ZERO cholesterol. No diets with higher fat content or dietary cholesterol have achieved similar outcomes. For example, see:
      dresselstyn.com/JFP_06307_Article1.pdf
      www.dresselstyn.com/Esselstyn_Three-case-reports_Exp-Clin-Cardiol-July-2014.pdf
Significantly, in an earlier 12-year study, Esselstyn succeeded in stopping heart disease in its tracks for a population of older people who had serious heart disease by using a very low fat whole food vegan diet (and statins for some to get LDL low enough), but that diet did NOT limit sugar. This indicates that sugar is not such a problem for heart disease IF people are eating very little fat, getting LDL very low, and are eating lots of anti-inflammatory whole plant foods.
      www.dresselstyn.com/site/study02/
One very long-term study followed people for an average duration of 26.8 years with an starting age of 42, and clearly found stepwise increases in CVD and CHD deaths with higher LDL levels, and also found higher all-cause mortality for groups with above 100 LDL than for those with under 100 LDL. Those relationships would have likely been even stronger had they controlled for reverse causality (some diseases/conditions that kill us lower LDL first), and had they focused on people who got LDL levels under 70 with healthy living/diet.
      www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.118.034273
It's super-easy to get confused about cholesterol because there are more weak "no-relationship, no harm" correlational studies out there than there are higher-quality studies that pin down the real nature of the relationship. Also, most studies have terrible restriction of range issues and don’t have a large population with truly healthy LDL levels-around 35-70. But people WANT to believe it’s not a problem, so they pay attention to the weaker “no harm” studies and ignore the stronger studies showing that elevated LDL IS a problem.
I’ve seen one informal on-line analysis concluding that for people eating more than 2.3 eggs a week, arterial plaque went down as LDL went up, but until we have evidence you can eliminate heart disease with higher LDL and a bunch of weekly eggs (as you can with a very low fat whole food plant-based diet), the safer route is to get LDL down to around 35-70 eating lots of whole plant foods and little dietary fat.
To be sure, improving endothelial functioning is still beneficial for reducing CVD, but if you get LDL low enough, plaques stop forming even with a crappy diet and lifestyle.
      Take care.

      @@Photologistic Thanks for your reply.
Yes, fats ARE required by the body, and we should eat quality fats when we eat them--meaning both the fats that meet nutritional needs and that don't cause harm. However, the body doesn't require that we eat MUCH fat: The post WWII Okinawans, the world's second longest lived formally-studied population, ate only 6% of calories from fat. The diets that have achieved the best and most lasting results for stopping and reversing heart disease have had around 10% calories from fat.
"Putting fat in...doesn’t cause lipids to rise." I apologize for pointing this out, but experimental research clearly shows that is false. Take someone eating a very low fat whole food diet, let's say 10% of calories from fat and 3% from saturated fat, and increase their fat consumption to 30% calories from fat and 10% from saturated fat, and their LDL levels rise substantially.
This was established empirically decades ago. To be sure, if someone has super-high LDL levels, then, like adding water to an overflowing bucket, a little more fat won't make much difference.
However, that that person who eats lots of saturated fat and has unnaturally-high LDL levels and replace some of the saturated fat in their diet and their LDL levels drop. In fact, you can make LDL levels drop like a rock if you take someone with LDL levels at 100 or higher and put them on a very low fat WFPB diet. For example, in one study, diabetics went on a totally plant-based diet with 73% calories from WHOLE FOOD carbs, and not only di they get their blood glucose levels under control, they dropped their LDL from 102 to 62 in just 3 weeks.
" It does not, unless you are also consuming a massive load of processed carbohydrates.? No, simply eating fat, of even injecting fat into the bloodstream not only makes LDL levels rise (or stay unnaturally high), it also creates insulin resistance and carbohydrate intolerance. We've known the latter point for almost a century.
I'm sorry the sites you are on are not telling you the whole story.
      Take care.

Yes, the body can and will make all the cholesterol you need, and it will even reduce its production of cholesterol SOMEWHAT if you add dietary cholesterol to a diet that previously had none. However, despite misleading Egg Board studies, we've know for more than a quarter century that adding dietary cholesterol markedly increases serum cholesterol levels if you start out with people who eat no or very little dietary cholesterol to begin with. Better EXPERIMENTAL studies clearly show this cholesterol-raising effect, though the effect become less dramatic the more cholesterol one was already consuming, so someone who was consuming zero cholesterol will see a big spike in cholesterol if they add 500 mg a day (~23 points increase), whereas someone who was already eating 300 mg a day will see a much smaller spike (~11 points). If you have faulty neurons that keep self-exciting and cause chaos (electric storm, epilepsy), then you actually want that particular neuron not be so easily excited. The way to do that? Either drugs or food that slow the brain down.
So for healthy people, ketone bodies are not good for the brain. Combined with the higher saturated fat and often cholesterol intake, it leads to higher risk of both vascular and alzheimer dementia, worse cognition, lower focus and mental performance etc. etc.

Sidilicious Exactly! We actually went vegan because my husband’s doctor recommended the Engine 2 diet for him. He’s overweight and type II diabetic. His blood results came back pretty bad and his doctor wanted to see if it’s genetic (diabetes runs strongly in his family) or if he’s just doing a crap job taking care of himself. Turned out to be the latter. All of his numbers improved and his in the pre-diabetic category rather than diabetic. It’s pretty amazing.

@@BrodyYYC "you know what you forgot to do? Explain why you think what you said is true." OK, I'll explain. I'm a university professor and researcher and part of what I research and teach about is healthy nutrition and how people get confused about it. So, what does the best big-picture research show? Most people will feel great on a wide variety of diets in the short run because they cut out.cut down on processed foods that are hard on your body and lost weight, and losing weight improves your BP, A1c, and usually your LDL.
However, in complex systems. many things that feel effective in the short run backfire badly in the long run. Thus, the farming methods and teaching methods that seem most effective in the short run for raising crop yield and test scores backfire badly in the long run. Ditto for economic policies and many diets.
In the case of keto, people who struggled to get their glucose levels under control finally get them under control because they stop eating virtually all carbs. However, they still have insulin resistance and carb intolerance, and are masking that fact by eating a super low carb diet. Please notice that a very low fat WFPB diet with lots of fiber can get glucose levels under control AND reverse insulin resistance and get rid of carb intolerance. So the first big difference is the VLF WFPB route resolves all the problems of diabetes while keto only solve one. The second big difference is that while VLF WFPB diets have been shown to be super healthy in the long run, keto diets have no record of long-term safety or efficacy (meaning across decades).
The human body did not evolve to be in ketosis constantly, and was not in ketosis constantly. Generic high-fat diets have been found to create high levels of methyl glyoxal, a potent AGE. which is very unhealthy. Keto folks will continue to be excited about the short-term benefits of the diet, but there's no evidence it is safe or effective in the long run.

Carbs: A Level-Headed Look at the Research --> ruclips.net/video/MyOACAdvAsE/видео.html ... main take away: de novo lipogenesis (fat creation from carbs) is metabolically inefficient and a terrible evolutionary strategy.
Humans Are Starchivores --> ruclips.net/video/vHfbqodBXdw/видео.html ... main take away: we have salivary amylase that helps us break down starch in the mouth.
Either way, scientific hierarchy places epidemiology above mechanisms and that's because the latter are irrelevant if no clinical effects (symptoms, complications) are observed, which is the case with mostly plant-based populations such as the Okinawans and Seventh Day Adventists (particularly the vegan ones). Granted there are many other factors affecting their health and longevity such as activity levels and healthy social circles, but the fact that they sustain a whole-foods, plant-based diet and live so long and healthy should be enough to debunk most arguments against a vegan diet.

To be clear, I wish a vegan diet was the healthiest, I have tremendous respect for people who are vegan for ethical and sustainable reasons, I did it myself (albeit only for about 4 months). I suspect keto isn't for everyone depending on their ancestry and their bodies ability to deal with high levels of carbohydrates. However, you can't argue with results. I've never felt better in my life, physically AND mentally as you describe. I feel incredible, oh and my cholesterol is super high, but it turns out there's no evidence that high cholesterol actually leads to heart disease. Wild! I especially love how Mic talks about how people who went keto also got rid of processed foods and that's why they get healthy. You mean like everyone that goes vegan? How come the vegan diet is one of the only diets you have to supplement vitamins in order to be healthy? Again, I'm all for ethical and sustainable conversations and I'm even open to people suggesting we should sacrifice some of our health for the planet. But the idea that Keto = bad and vegan = good for your health is 100% ABSURD.

Each time, I was good for maybe 2 weeks and then the GI problems start again. I went on Primal Blueprint 1.5 years ago and it helped but still did not cure me... as I was eating a ton of fruits. I started Keto at end of Oct. 2018, cut out all the sugars, not for weight loss but for memory improvement (old age...) and guess what... GI issue fixed, more energy all day, feel great, no regrets, life is good!!
The vlogger is young, his body can handle a ton of crap. Looking back, it is scary the amount of junk I ate at his age. Just wait until he's in his mid 40's or like me, mid 50's and see how it goes. It just might catch up.
Now some will say this Keto will kill you... so be it, though I hardly think so. I am quite happy with higher HDL and LDL and lower Total Ratio and lower Triglycerides. But if Keto does take me out a few years earlier than expected, so be it, I am 1000% ok with it. I rather have a huge improvement in current quality of life than to worry if I will die when I'm 85 or 90.

It's possible to give up sugar w/o going keto. Why credit keto? Giving up sugar, processed foods and losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight, will make a anyone feel great. Keto, aka, fat, has nothing to do with it. Fat provides energy with no nutritional value. Sugar provides energy with no nutritional factor. Giving up sugar is great. Replacing it with fat, not so much. That fat will catch up with you. I'm extremely dedicated to my health which has led to a massive science habit. Full on addiction to microbiome studies. I read them all. Day after day is another study about meat digesting bacteria producing toxins that lead to artery deterioration and heart disease. Veganism is an ethical lifestyle that just so happens to coincide with a very healthy diet when eating whole foods. Ethics aside, I know many healthy people who are plant based and eat pasture raised, grass fed meat in small amounts. Fiber is the key to a healthy microbiome and the microbiome controls everything. I'm glad you are enjoying the benefits of giving up sugar but sincerely hope for your sake you read the science and replace some of that fat with more veg and some fruit. Heart disease will suck that quality of life up real fast.
One benefit no meat or fat heavy diet can claim is anti-aging, clearly, since they are basically the opposite of that. Let me tell you what feels great. I'll be 49 this year and look 35. My first powerlifting competition is in August. After that I'll go to the National Championships. I've got my eyes on a few records and the World Championships next year or 2. I've never eaten meat. I'm not vegan, currently I'm 95% plant based. I use cane sugar and healthy fats in moderation. I used to eat pasture raised eggs daily, but have been off them for a month, have been eating a lot more fruit and my creatinine level went from .99 to .87. I'm very lean with a lot of muscle with kidney damage from prescribed ibuprofen for endometriosis, so I'm pretty excited to see that drop. Blood sugar dropped as well even though I've added more sugar in the form of fruits and a lot of them. Not sure if eggs will reappear in moderation, for now I don't miss them. I eat fish a couple times a month, the rest is plant protein and yet I'm stronger with more muscle mass than the majority of meat eaters at any age, much less at my age. Amazing what happens when your entire diet is antioxidents.

The only damaging saturated fats are artificially created saturated fats from unsaturated fats. (hydrogenated/trans fats) The shape is a mirror image with natural saturated cis fats and do not function the same in the body for example when they are incorporated in a cell membrane the permeability is not the same.

My LDL is at 67, and HDL is at 68... this is because of the types of fats I eat. I don't just drink cheap vegetable oils, lol. I eat avocados, I use olive oils, I eat animal fats, a lot of fish oils, omega 3s, omega 6s, nuts and seeds, solid at room temp dairy fats, coconut oil, avocado oil... no transfats, no 'partially hydrogenated vegetable oils'... However, regardless of my personal numbers, the thing about cholesterol is... it's not actually a problem, so long as you have no inflammation in your arteries, which is generally caused by obesity, because obesity causes high blood pressure, high blood volume, and inflammation, caused in part due to blood sugar spiking and crashing over and over again. Blaming cholesterol for coronary disease is like blaming the band aid for the cuts. Eliminate the cause of the cuts, and you don't have to worry about the band aids... Cholesterol won't adhere to your blood vessels if there is no damage it's trying to patch and repair, after all.

That's super important on any reasonable diet. I eat more veggies in a day than most North Americans eat in a week, to this day. I still think that's something I have in common with the Vegan/Vegetarian community. I love my veggies. That's helped me a lot in my life.

That's wonderful about your LDL. Cholesterol and plaque are more complicated than the cholesterol deniers with their bandaid analogies claim, and lots of things cause inflammation, including animal foods. When there's LDL above 67, plaque builds up, and the higher the LDL, the more plaque build up you get. The promise of keto is that it somehow changes those dynamics. Take care.

IMO, it is the only legit way to do keto, as it is not associated in the clinical research so far with any of the health problems that traditional keto is associated with. The experiment I've done was to eat "raw fruits and veggies only" for 1 week. No grains or anything else to not mess up with the digestibility. It feels counter-intuitive I know, but after I could digest fruits properly. Rebuilding the right enzymes. My logic was "Ok if there's some kind of bacterial overgrowth in my system, and limiting sugar (carbs) helps but only for a time, I'll give them what they want (the bacterial overgrowth wants carbs) and count on my body to rebalance things out." I can only speak from my own experience, but this worked for me. The first 2 - 3 days I was really bloated, yes, but then, symptoms faded rapidly. (Before that experiment I was on vegan keto for 2 months.) Right after the experiment I kept eating lots of fresh fruits on a daily basis without or with very minimum symptoms. Now I can eat a whole watermelon if wanted or lots of dates, without bloating or discomfort. Anyway, hope this helps in a way or another! Best health to you!

I tweaked the Keto diet by using mono and polyunsaturated fat. And it worked for me.
I was pre-diabetic and had uncontrolled hypertension. Now, my HgbA1c is normal and lost weight and blood pressure under control and dropping. I retired as an ICU registered nurse and based on my knowledge on pathophysiology, I got convinced by the diet so I tried it. Now, I am slowly discontinuing some of my meds upon discussion with my doctor. Saturated fat is never a good fat source and high carb diet is not either since your body converts it to glucose.

the carrot you eat today has very little nutrition in it-especially compared to some of the other less healthy foods you likely also eat-but it is true that fruits and vegetables grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than the varieties most of us get today. The main culprit in this disturbing nutritional trend is soil depletion: Modern intensive agricultural methods have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from the soil in which the food we eat grows. Sadly, each successive generation of fast-growing, pest-resistant carrot is truly less good for you than the one before.
the solution is not only starch but mineral supplement starch

Keto is a bit like fasting, which is a good thing. But it has - unlike fasting - long time disadvantages.
Refined Carbs ARE bad. Whole food carbs aren‘t. Eat them and do intermitting fasting (which, interestingly, is already suggested by many keto „gurus“), and you‘re on the safe side.

It is disappointing when someone with a strong agenda - e.g a vegan - seeks to debunk something which is not a movement, profits no-one, and may actually have benefits for the majority of people without forcing them to forego many foods they currently enjoy.
The principal of a ketogenic diet is to reduce carbohydrate intake sufficiently that the body begins to burn fat as its main natural food source. Difficult to make money or sell people anything since this is a very simple principle to adopt. Of course the first few weeks of trying this seem difficult, but it doesn't take long for it to become second nature. Instead of agonising over whether the piece of cake contains eggs or other animal products you simply don't eat the cake because of its high carbohydrate content. Seems a big sacrifice the first few weeks, but after a short time the cravings disappear because the high fat intake keeps the body satiated and energy levels can stay level for hours without eating. Starts to make sense when considering how our ancestors could spend long times between meals.
The "keto" diet does not advocate eating large quantities of meat. In fact it acknowledges how a vegetarian keto diet is possible - e.g. olives, nuts and avocados can provide the oils and fats the body needs without eating meat.
Undoubtedly it should be recognised that the human race would be a fraction of its current size if we hadn't adopted a carbohydrate based diet. The cheap source of energy provided by agriculture - wheat and rice in particular - has allowed us to double our population every 50 years. However that does not validate a carbohydrate based diet. Leave scraps of food around and we are quickly overrun by mice, rats, pigeons and seagulls. All that shows is that life will do what it can to survive and expand. It is not evidence that our bodies are meant to eat meals that cause the pancreas to work overtime creating insulin to dampen the blood sugar rush which occurs after eating carbohydrates, followed by the liver having to mop up all the excess energy and turn it into fat which the body stores.
The documentary "magic pill" may have messed up on maths: agriculture has been around for 10,000 years while humans in their homo sapiens variant perhaps 200,000 does show that we have only been eating bread and potatoes for 5% of human history. But to ridicule the maths error overlooks the main point that our ancestors would typically have eaten foods they found above ground, including animals. Wild animals are not overweight and do not get illnesses like us: colds, flu etc. Only animals held captive and fed by humans become fat.
A keto diet may not suit the agenda of an insecure vegan - although the two can be the same if you eat enough nuts, seeds, avocados and olives etc. But to simply rule it out because it threatens the "holier than thou" ethos of veganism is pitiful. Most of the good results from a keto diet may appear to be anecdotal, but that is simply due to the lack of objective long-term clinical trials. To re-iterate no-one is selling ready-meals or special snacks under the keto bran which is very different to any other food movement. Simply remove potatoes, pasta, bread and rice and add some olive oil and you are pretty much there.

Was curious to look at these studies on dying: study 1 was a case study of a female with a seizure disorder, study 2 was not negative at all, in fact concluded that most complications that may occur during the diet are transient, and does not mention death as a risk of a ketogenic diet at all. Study 3 (like previous two studying children with seizures, so not your average human by the way) concluded: "The KD is a safe and effective alternative therapy for intractable childhood epilepsy in Korea" so not all that negative I don't think! Study 4 is actually about death woo!! Once again children with refractory epilepsy, this time as many as two, and suggested children should be monitored closely to follow up their treatment. Finally study 5 (also on children with epilepsy, that's 5/5!) concluded: The KD is a safe and efficacious therapy for intractable childhood epilepsy in Chinese children. The influence of age on efficacy is worth further investigation.
I'm not here to say ketogenic diets are the best, the worst or anything in between, but scaremongering people by associating the diet with death is just totally false. There is a huge amount of research showing people (adults, sometimes even without epilepsy!!!) improving heath hugely on a ketogenic diet, and unfortunately for you it just about always outperforms high carb diets (the effect is negligible when both groups eliminate sugars and refined grains).
Absolutely the efficacy of ketogenic diets can and should be discussed, but referring to the research that you did is totally misleading and prevents any rational debate. I take great problem with the misleading nature of the Magic Pill documentary in suggesting keto diets fix everything, but argue that instead of citing contextually irrelevant research.

This is the final paragraph of study 2 " In conclusion, KD can cause various complications, but most of these can be improved with conservative management, with no need to stop the KD. However, we sometimes experienced serious complications requiring interruption of the KD, and life‐threatening infectious diseases, lipoid pneumonia due to aspiration, and cardiomyopathy produced fatal outcomes. The mortality rate was not greater than that associated with the natural progression of symptomatic childhood epilepsy (42). However, to prevent fatal outcomes with the KD, early detection of serious illness and active intervention seem to be most important, as is adequate nutritional support and extensive screening for underlying metabolic or immunologic disorders. " .... 2 patients died during that study

First hand experience. I had a prediabetic A1C in 2019 (likely binge drinking on long weekends + drunk diet although I ate well during the week + genetics). My Doc suggested low carb. I took that as keto when poked around. It quickly dropped my 5'10" weight from 195-200 lb to 170 lb. Kind of went low carbish, but not full keto and then more Mediterranean for a year or so. Then started watching youtube more as background during COVID and got pulled into the keoverse influencer world and went full strict keto. Less on the red meats and such. Nut butter was my weakness and big part of the diet. But also a lot of coconut saturated fat, butter, cheese and such. Lots of eggs.
Did this about 18 months and LDL went from 90 to 175. My primary goal was pushing A1C down from 5.6 that was too close to prediabetic for comfort. Appreciate the note on this Shawn Baker and his high fasting glucose. Mine was always 105, 110, 115ish level. That got me into longer fasting and chasing low 90s and 80s measurements. I would do 3 day fasts every few weeks and only got glucose in the 80s a few times. My liver was working overtime producing glucose.
My approx. 18 month blood work was a wreck eating a clean whole food keto diet (no processed foods... I made my own mayo). Liver enzymes showed fatty liver development. LDL was super high and my A1C did not change. I'm watching the Shawn Baker labs. Interesting to see them hand-wave the poor Kidney function and Liver enzyme levels just like I was doing.

i should have said protein because Keto doesn't Force one to eat meat at all... Beans, eggs work too. (although in my opinion not as well)
      But to the point
      2000 calorie diet
      20% = 400 calories
Protein is 4 calories per gram so,
      so 400/4 = 100 grams of protein
      The 40-60g recommendation is modest
So if you're calling 100 grams "HUGE" then you're either not thinking clearly or just using that word too flexibly.

A high fat WHOLE food vegan diet is very hard to achieve. Even nuts, seeds and advocados have enough carbs to interrupt nutritional ketosis. You can get those macros by using some oil like coconut or olive oil (not whole foods anymore) or you can rely on high fat whole foods plant based without nutritional ketosis. Not all Ketogenic diets are alike. I'm a pescatarian, low-saturated-fat eater. I get my carbs from true vegetables and healthy fats (not coconut oil, which is 93% saturated fat). I have almost zero dairy in my diet. Best of all, I feel better than I ever have in my life - mental clarity sharpened, brain fog gone, heightened energy, and slow but steady weight loss. And guess what? You can successfully be both vegan and Keto. No need to pick a fight (or pick at all)!

Some people don't eat eggs for ethical reasons (for example, all the male chicks that get slaughtered as part of the egg industry), and some don't eat them because of health reasons, such as their negative effects on LDL (assuming your LDL level was healthy to begin with ... under 70 or so) and cancer.

Compared to a whole food vegan diet, adding any animal protein (eggs included) promotes cancer because it raise IGF-1 levels about 15% higher than a vegan diet, and IGF-1 promotes EVERY aspect of cancer, from initiation to proliferation, to metastasis:
      ruclips.net/video/ayuVb9-nFVo/видео.html
Thus, animal protein, but not plant protein, is strongly linked to higher cancer rates:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/animal-protein-compared-cigarette-smoking/
The title below says it all...
      nutritionfacts.org/video/how-our-gut-bacteria-can-use-eggs-to-accelerate-cancer/
More on how TMAO functions and how the egg industry funded a rigged study to try to cover up the fact that eggs raise TMAO levels:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/egg-industry-response-to-choline-and-tmao/
      And this...
"Harvard University researchers followed more than a thousand men with early-stage prostate cancer for several years. Compared with men who rarely ate eggs, men who ate even less than a single egg a day appeared to have twice the risk of prostate cancer progression, such as metastasizing into the bones. The only thing potentially worse for prostate cancer than eggs was poultry: Men with more aggressive cancer who regularly ate chicken and turkey had up to four times the prostate cancer progression risk. On the other hand, less than a single daily serving of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, or kale may cut the risk of cancer progression by more than half." from...
      nutritionfacts.org/topics/prostate-cancer/
With advanced prostate cancer, replacing animal foods with plant foods dramatically improved outcomes. Summaries of studies on this:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/treating-advanced-prostate-cancer-with-diet-part-2/
Research on plant foods improving prostate cancer outcomes and animal foods, including eggs, making things worse. Studies on this:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/prostate-versus-plants/
Higher egg consumption has been strongly linked to higher rates of lethal prostate cancer, with the choline in eggs fingered as one likely mechanism. Related studies summarized at:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/eggs-choline-and-cancer/
Oh, and here are studies finding eggs linked to higher rates of heart disease and diabetes:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/debunking-egg-industry-myths/
And we also know from other lines of experimental research that if you replace eggs in your diet with oatmeal, you get a healthy drop in your LDL cholesterol, but if you add daily eggs to the diet of someone who eats little cholesterol or no and has a healthy LDL level (under 67), then you get a big jump in LDL levels, and at higher LDL levels, plaque builds up faster in our arteries. But the Egg Board conducts rigged studies with people with super high LDL and super unhealthy diets, and then says "See, swapping sausage for eggs didn't raise people's LDL levels." But they don't tell you to get your LDL to a healthy level, you have to drop both the sausage and the eggs.
      Take care.

I am not a fan of keto but this video is doing the same type of thing, just from "the other side". Pick and choose the studies that suit the agenda, then make a sensational video. I only care about results. I became a Vegan for a year in an attempt to lower hereditary high cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides and my numbers did not budge. I was a triathlete and my cardiologist told me I was doing everything perfectly (Athlete's diet, low-fat/high-carb, "clean") and only heredity was working against me. I was told to immediately begin statins and blood pressure meds. I refused and while complaining about my dilemma a coworker suggested I try Paleo; 6 months later all my numbers were normal. During that 6 months I ate bacon and fried eggs each morning for breakfast. That was 8 years ago. Still Paleo, still normal bloodwork numbers. This is a REAL story with REAL results, no spin, no agenda. EVERYONE IS NOT THE SAME.

      Thanks for sharing. Two questions:
      1) When you were a vegan, were you eating a whole food diet that was very low in fat (~10% calories from fat)?
      2) When you say your bloodwork is normal (I assume you mean healthy, not what's statistiscally normal for a very unhealthy population), do you mean you got your LDL under 70--the level at which plaque doesn't progressively build up in our arteries?
      Thanks.

    • @lskdvn
      @lskdvn 6 лет назад

      1) Yes I was. I had eaten a very low-fat diet for most of my life. I was considered a "health nut" by my friends. 2) I mean it went from dangerously-high to the normal accepted range.

    • @karlwheatley1244
      @karlwheatley1244 6 лет назад +5

I asked whether it was under 70 because the "normal accepted range is under 130 or under 100, depending on who you got to. However, we know that plaque steadily builds up at those LDL levels, so the healthy LDL level is under ~67.

    • @Demostravius
      @Demostravius 6 лет назад +1

That isn't how LDL works at all. LDL is firstly an INDICATOR not a cause of plaque, and secondly it's not even a good one. HDL is better hence why everyone is trying to improve it, and remnant cholesterol and VLDL are better still.

    • @karlwheatley1244
      @karlwheatley1244 6 лет назад +5

Excessive LDL levels in the arteries leads to plaque buildup in response to inflammation---lots of layers of "bandaids" going to fix the wound, but then ll those layers of bandaids clog up the arteries. Thus, cholesterol is a dominant feature of arterial plaques (and there's evidence that crystallized cholesterol--which would only occur with very high levels after a meal--plas a role in triggering heart attacks. When expectant mothers' LDL is higher, the fetus gets more plaque building up in the aorta, but when LDL levels are normal in humans (which appears to be more like 35-60), plaque does not build up in the arteries, even in the presence of inflammation. After eating animal foods, both inflammation and LDL rise and oxidized cholesterol rise, so it's like you're painting thin layers of plaque onto your artery walls with every meal, and doing so faster than the body can heal the damage. But the truly normal human LDL is clearly well under 70, which explains why it gives us trouble when it's at the elevated levels most people are at. The higher the level above 67, the faster plaque seems to build up. See this study:
      www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0735109704007168
Actually, HDL appears to be more of a marker, for in Mendelian randomized experiments, having genetically lower LDL reduces heart disease risk but genetically higher HDL doesn't:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/how-do-we-know-that-cholesterol-causes-heart-disease/
The people who spend (waste) their time debating the finer points of cholesterol profiles are mainly debating which is a slightly better predictor or which is a slightly higher risk factor for a heart attack or stroke--assuming you are still OK with having a grossly elevated LDL level that produces progressively worsening atherosclerosis (which virtually all Americans have) and assuming your are still OK with quite high risks of heart attack, stroke, dementia, erectile dysfunction. If you don't mind being in that group, talk all day about VLDL or the large fluffy particles which are slightly less atherogenic but still about 70% as atherogenic as small dense particles. Talk all you want to about TG/HDL ratio if you're planning to eat a diet that still leaves you with progressively worsening plaque and a quite high risk of eventual erectile dysfunction (50% of men over 50), angina, heart attacks, strokes, and dementia.
However, what I'm talking about when I talk about cholesterol is how you ELIMINATE the risk of heart attack and stroke and get plaque buildup to reverse, which multiple trials have shown can be done when you get LDL very low (40-60 ideally) and eat a whole food vegan diet that is ~10 calories from fat. These studies may help:
      dresselstyn.com/JFP_06307_Article1.pdf
      www.dresselstyn.com/Esselstyn_Three-case-reports_Exp-Clin-Cardiol-July-2014.pdf
To put it differently, it may not make much difference for your headaches whether you hit yourself on the head nine times daily or seven times daily, but if you stop hitting yourself on the head every day with the hammer (saturated fat & cholesterol), you can get the headaches (heart disease) to stop.
      Take care.

If you monitor your blood on the keto diet to stay within 3-7 mmdL you will not have keto acidosis, and yes keto acidosis is a diabetic issue..there are also plenty of studies which show it to be healthy for many conditions... since ancient times people have fasted in order to improve mental health conditions, more recently we discovered that ketones are a more steady fuel source for the brain (sugar highs and lows can effect the blood brain barrier causing an unstable environment in the brain of someone with a weakened blood brain barrier) the ketogenic diet mimic the positive effects of fasting.. you say the body prefers to consume sugar with the logic that it burns sugar first, but your body will burn alcohol before sugar.. does that mean it prefers alcohol?? Also ketosis doesn’t necessarily mean animal products you can be vegan a in ketosis.. there are plenty of studies showing that vegans are often deficient in minerals/vitamins such as iron and vitamin K2, there are plenty of people who enzymes needed to digest large amount of green, cows have multiple stomachs in order to digest a lot of grass.
I think both diets are better than the SAD but the keto diet helped me a lot with my health problems

I had a heart attack five days ago and I'm only 36. a friend of mine had suggested I watch the magic pill (an RN, at that) in an effort it get control of my newfound heart disease.
20 minutes in I was shocked, but I kept going. halfay through I was amazed. By the end, I was excited.
But something in the back of my mind was jumping up and down, screaming at me:
    "IT'S ALL HORSESHIT!"
I had been vegan for a short stint while I was in the Army, so everything they were saying flew in the face of all the research I had pored over years ago (i.e. the China Study).
But I was still convinced. For the same reason everyone else was. You can make gobs of money telling people good news about their bad habits (you said that). When people see stuff like The Magic Pill, they're almost willing to forego common sense and experience to justify filling the coffers of American Beef.
In my case, it would be a huge gamble with my life right now.
So I went to /r/ketoscience for some clarification. These assholes were perfectly content telling me that a keto diet would cure me and lower my cholesterol and I would be a new man.
The more they talked, the less I believed. They couldn't quote any actual medial data, they would just tell me to read someone's book.
one of them made a post linking to your video, saying what an idiot you were. but... you used actual data I could corroborate. The movie did not. They conveniently left out the lifespan of the aborigine prior to 1970, by the way.
The fact is, I'm scared, Mic. I almost saw death. I'm angry there are people who would happily kill me to prove their false narrative. I've watched many of your videos and I'm glad I found your channel.

I have gone through his sources as I said already. they are verifiable information. magic pill quoted the author of the vegetarian myth who is clearly an idiot if you actually read her book or listen to some of her commentary on it.
I mean, just to hear her say that soil can only be made with dead animals and plants can only be fed with dead animals... I mean, Jesus Chris, really? so, it stands to reason of the magic pill is deferring to this idiot to strengthen their narrative, then everyone else is probably also a complete idiot.
and, after further investigation, have found this to be true.
most people won't go to the lengths I did because their life isn't in immediate danger of being lost to another myochardial infarction. people love to hear good news about their bad habits and often will NEVER verify facts given from a bullshit source if it tickles their fancy. as mic put it, carnivorous sheep.
do some homework. quit looking for data that makes you feel good. the truth may hurt, but not as much as a heart attack.

I was on the SAD (Standard American Diet) with extra sugar my whole life. The last five years have been abysmal as I was slowly deteriorating I was looking more and more towards answers from nutrition. Everything I came across pointed to vegetables and fruits as potential solution and I focused on this for two to three years, but so many things got worse. Finally I was getting severe brain fog, arthritis everywhere, my eyesight got so bad I couldn't read my books with my prescription glasses, I thought I would go blind, had no motivation and was losing all hope. About five months ago (Aug 2022) I came across the keto + intermittent fasting plan (Dr Berg and other resources) and seemed to make sense, note this change I was hoping to lose some weight so my recovering knee would be less stressed long term. Within three days of going all in on the keto. the brain fog and eyesight got better. probably a week or two later I noticed a distinct decline in arthritis. I did switch to carnivore about 15 days in because I did feel bloated every time I ate all the veggies and yet felt "unfulfilled" with my meals at the same time. Carnivore (mostly red meat, pork, chicken, butter, bacon and eggs) streamlined everything for me. I do not starve, when I am hungry I eat, when I am full I stop. I did have some constipation issues in the beginning but have since figured that out with ramping up or down my butter intake as needed. 5 months in I am worlds better than I was. Not saying I am cured of all things, just significantly improved than I was. My eyesight is back enough so that I can read again with my prescription glasses and I no longer have to use ibuprofen and ice after my very short jogs (my knee continues to improve but taking it easy so as not to backslide) which hasn't happened in about 15 years. I still feel like I am improving as I learn more and more about this "diet" or rather a lifestyle, sometimes I have to tweak things but I have to listen and stay disciplined.

The adverse affects shown only occur when the diet is poorly followed. Thinning hair and hair loss is because people don’t properly replace the calories they were previously getting from carbs with fats and proteins and lost weight to fast.

I have two dear friends who are both doing the keto diet, and are so excited to have lost the weight that they wanted to lose. Meanwhile, I've been eating as WFPB as possible and have gradually lost about 1/4 of the weight I want to lose... oh yeah, and I've never had to complain about feeling hungry, or tired; and my skin has improved, and my hair and nails have been growing longer, stronger, and faster; and my blood pressure and cholesterol have improved, and my iron levels are higher....

been vegan for seven years and will be vegan my whole life. in my opinion, keto is not natural at all. you have to take supplements all the time to prevent muscle cramps, because you don't get enough nutrients from your food, even being on vegan keto.

Was a 'normal eater' AKA fat American till 27, swapped to a healthy balanced nutrional lifestyle of everything. Anecdotal, but my yearly blood tests with the VA have been so good, my doc lets me skip em every other year. Like I mentioned in another comment though. There is no one size fits all. If it works for you, great. Meat, fruits, veggies, all work great for me. I dabble in keto (rarely but occasionally) and intermittent Fasting (every day for the past 6 years). Nothing is black and white.

This video is very insulting to my intelligence. I would never try and "cure" my daughter of her autism. The documentary makes no such claim. While filming this, converting to a keto lifestyle was a process. We cut processed garbage first, and eventually added the fats and cut the carbs. My daughter's cognition improved when we cut the processed foods. It improved even more when we added fat and cut natural carbs.

    • @tomjones2157
      @tomjones2157 6 лет назад +13

      bdizzle7771
Yes I echo this. Keto has helped my autism immensely and I wish my parents had known about it. Living without Keto was like being trapped in a prison as I couldn't think or communicate well until I raised my fats and lowered my carbs. I do not feel the need to be "cured" of autism at all, but to trap a child into the worst they can be due to not bothering to try a simple diet is very distressing to me. It seems lazy, selfish and vain not to learn more how to help your own child. Many a time I've heard mother claim she would "do anything", any programme, any expensive camp or therapy, but angrily refused to try the diet. I know alot of parents are actually are exhausted and shy away from trying one more thing. Especially when it requires them to give up convenience foods they rely on after a busy day at work and actually shop and cook day after day. But in the end it wasn't hard to change our diet and my partner's health issues also reversed eating along side me. I am so happy to hear you have gone the extra mile to help your child get the most out of life :)

I often look closely at the ratio of likes to dislikes. This video has a very low like to dislike ratio. Only about 6 to 1, while vids that are mostly agreed with are more like 30:1. When you consider that many (most ?) People search for videos which they like, or are into, 6:1 tells me that their are a lot of people do not agree with this.

All kinds of diet- keto, vegan, paleo are not healthy as our body needs nutrients from different kinds of natural whole foods. The important thing is 1) NOT eating refined, processed junk foods 2) eating small portions 3) intermittent fasting
