North Korea Just Failed Really Hard...

- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at a program known as "3CX" which was recently breached by North Korean hackers (or so it's believed) in a supply chain attack. This managed to damage just shy of 10 computers and while it could have been catastrophic it ended up doing nothing in the grand scheme thankfully. Why did they do this? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!

The existence of a hacker collective in North Korea indicates that those involved possess elevated privileges and access to money. It's well known how oppressive and heavy-handed the government there is. In the United States, most hackers are downtrodden and flat broke. I just see that as an odd dynamic.
"In the United States, most hackers are downtrodden and flat broke." Uh what? Most "hackers" are either government employed, or criminals, or use their IT prowess to get good jobs
Well its one of a few ways that North korea makes its money from doing highly illegal stuff such as using hackers to steal large amounts of cash
"most" are downtrodden. Thing is, the states has both. The downtrodden and then the privelaged, powerful ones.
@Junk Bond Trader Absolutely true. The US loves to "flip" people. Catch one of the galaxy brains that have managed to get us, and hand them a blank check.
@The wanderer Fact. I'm starting to think I didn't think my statement through very well 🤪
I’d like to imagine that the hackers has also stole scam/meme coins too thinking that it would be easy money but end up getting shafted after stealing coins like save the kids, TITs, etc.

Honestly glad at this point that Bethesda game modding is so torturous cuz it's taught me how to understand tech speak a little more, then adding running local servers to play multiplayer games solo and watching muta just makes that knowledge even greater cuz now I can actually understand what he's saying without needing to Google definitions
@@codingsafari no you don't, learning how to mod Bethesda games alone was painful and took years to figure out how to press a few buttons while staring at a white screen cuz it doesn't have dark mode and having to boot the game and wait till it crashes and hope that whilst turning on and off mods that the crashing "might" stop (fallout 4 never not crashes and yet remains playable still, I just have to wait till it stops crashing so I can hit load game and then hope it doesn't crash while loading)
And then those local servers, literally all of them are built differently so you have to learn different ways to set them up just to not have to play with other people only to get bored of the game around the time you'd restart your progress or lose a lot of progress in order to start over and effectively abandon what you made
Just typing that gave me a stress induced headache which is also sleep deprivation induced
Mutahar's sinister chuckle in the beginning makes me think he's the one wjo thwarted Kim Jong Un's hacking escapades.

That’s how they get their money now given how isolated and sanctioned they are.

A couple schools and even a hospital got hit with some Ransomware last week here in West Virginia. I was thinking that would likely be that an Internet provider got hit, and all the server stacks at the particular location would then get infected. Mutah, if you're reading this, does that make sense, or am I off base?
The schools and hospital were probably infected separated, not through their ISP.
It's always astounding to me how much power hackers and programmers really have.
Now this is a certified hashbrown moment
My humor is so random that Muta dropping a controller was enough to get a laugh out of me, not the fail from the hackers, but the fucking controller 🤣

Honestly I can see why these videos get repetitive, but I'm ngl I still like hearing about news like this.
How does North Korea even have access to the internet? That's probably something I'd look into stopping or blocking long ago. As soon as that's done, I'd look into building some kind of giant dome that can be flown over and dropped over the country and slowly pump sleeping gas inside.

exactly what they want. They dont care about the outside world. Everything they do is designed to oppress their people and empower their regime. They want the world to leave them alone, and forget about them/
To fail, you have to be able to succeed at something in the first place...
what do you think North Korea's goal is? They aren't trying to achieve what other countries are. They are this way on purpose. They are all about having their population under their thumb, and retaining complete power over their people as a regime. They are remarkably successful in that regard. They aren't trying to take over the world, they don't really care about the outside world as much as it would seem. Everything they do is meant to fool and deceive their population, and retain power in their regime. They don't want to nuke anyone, or invade countries, or have a happy, thriving population, or whatever you think their goals are. They want to be left alone.

Really shocked at your characterization of Tornado cash, especially as you've usually come off to me as a privacy advocate. As opposed to other mixers, its innovation was providing a way to prove the source of the funds if you choose, i.e. specifically designed for people who have legitimate reasons to want anonymity, but still have the capability to prove origins of income to the tax man (or whoever else). Criminals use the dark web, but so do journalists living under oppressive regimes.
Although there is admittedly plenty money laundering in the crypto space, the last reports I saw from Chainalysis put it as proportionally lower to the traditional finance space, even with the KYC and AML processes used in tradfi (traditional finance). Similarly their analysis of Tornado cash put the proportion of illicit funds using the service before the OFAC ban at 30%. You might think that sounds high, but think of the fact that it's only 30% of all the money going through tornado cash seems to be malicious, i.e. 70% are people with just plain old legitimate reasons for wanting privacy from the general public. If those people exit that cash via any fiat off-ramp, they're still gonna have to explain the source of those funds to the tax man. That's not bad when you think of Tornado Cash as a concentration of all the people who care a lot about privacy, which necessarily includes in the set all sophisticated bad actors. So, of the set of all crypto people who care deeply about personal financial privacy, a minority are bad actors.
Regarding the OFAC ban of Tornado cash, a new replacement protocol is currently in testing. One of the original devs, Ameen Solemani, has an updated version called Privacy Pools which allows you to create a proof at withdrawal time which provably excludes certains deposit wallets from the set who could be your source of funds. Using that somebody could maintain their privacy, and still generate a proof for OFAC (while remaining anonymous) that their wallet wasn't funded by one of the wallets which did xyz hack associated with North Korea or some such. i.e. there are ways we can have our financial privacy and be against criminals at the same time. Oh, and the reason the website is still up, it's hosted on IPFS, so to remain available all that is needed is for at least 1 IPFS gateway to keep its content ID pinned, and obviously the real meat is the smart contracts which are on chain and immutable.
FYI, Ameen Solemani has worked on a bunch of great public goods products. He was one of the people behind spank chain, which was specifically trying to create a payment network and financial services for sex workers (cam girls and such), because even in countries where those services are legal they were having trouble being banked. Largely due to operation choke point 1.0 in which the Obama administration leaned on banks to stop providing services to legal businesses which the administration considered 'dodgy'. i.e. effectively making something illegal while not having to put it on the books. The administration was actually being sued for that before the administration changed and so the operation (and court case) fizzled out.
I had to ctrl-f tornado, and unfortunately this is the only good comment regarding this matter.
In other words, journalists are laundering money too.
I used to be in the North Korea watching community. The Hankyoreh, a news platform made by and for North Korean refugees, doesn’t use bitcoin. LiNK (Liberty in North Korea) don’t use Bitcoin. They just use cash. These oppressive regimes don’t allow journalists access to the internet to get bitcoin. They also can’t exactly spend bitcoin or exchange it for cash to buy stuff like food, so it’s useless to them. The only country that allows that is El Salvador and they’re not having a good time of it. Bitcoin is so deflated that it’s not a practical currency to buy goods on the open market. It’s become an asset, like gold or bearer bonds. Journalists don’t need that. If you want to help journalists in repressive regimes, you can donate to Reporters Without Borders.
Thank you for covering this !
