That's called a Walk in Rescue truck. Used to carry supplemental firefighting equipment. Probably a 292 ford. Great condition and very low miles. Manufacturers often used lots of bondo to make the countours on the body. They had a unique exhaust note.

I really think you should leave it as is. Get it running, driving, and stopping for sure, but for the most part, leave it as a hevy rescue truck. I think it's important to preserve history. Plus, all the lives it saved, the men that worked with that truck. I think it's important to save that history. The bottles on that truck are SCBA bottles. Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.

That's a cool idea I was thinking he should put a tow hitch on it so he can pick up other vehicles on a trailer and leave the body of the truck as is

That is a Rescue Truck, used to carry auto extrication equipment (and other equipment) and firefighters to fires. Those cylinders are for compressed air, so firefighters can breath in smoke filled areas.

Back in the day there was a government group called the Civil Defense Agency. Their role was to provide aid if the country was attacked. They had a lot of vehicles similar to this that were surplused out and most of the rigs went to fire departments. Portland Fire had an old truck about that vintage that was used as a first responder truck company rig.It hauled ladders down the center aisle stacked up and the bins all held truck company tools like chainsaws ,breaching tools and many other pieces used by the Firefighters. That truck was badged as Truck 10 and served SE Portland for many years. I wonder if your truck has that history as part of its lineage?

Leave it as is but get it running and stopping. The backs of the seats remind me of what the back of school bus seats looked like many years ago (yeah before the safety padding they have now). If not for all the doors and compartments it could have made a nice sized RV, but leave it as it is now and maybe even reproduce the lettering type and use your own logos on the cab and rear doors
With the engine since it does run and considering it was a bit snug turning over I'd fog the intake / valves with diesel/ATF mix or SeaFoam and flood the cylinders to soak for a few days, spin her over before putting the plugs back in and with the carb swap may just run even better, she'll smoke like a freight train for a minute

This would be an awesome truck to take parts to swapmeets in. Would not hurt either if you needed the space in it for parts OR to tow a new project home with.

I had a 1962 ford with 292 V8. Ran 131 K sold it and it made 200k. Normal maintained and couple starters and thermostats were fairly regular replacement. Great engine. Leave it as is and if anything just open up inside for rv or go to track type use.

I think it'd make a cool service truck. Tools, air, tires, and the like for a club race team. If it doesn't get too heavy, it'd prolly tow the car on a tilt bed too 😁

That has to be a rare truck,,I can't imagine they made more than a few hundred of them,,And most of them are now probably in junk yards or compleatly scrapped ,,There may only be a few left,,On one hand if you keep it as is,,There's not really much you can do with it in daly life,,,On the other hand if you modify it you may be destroying the only one in existence,,It's a catch 22,,If you only payed 40 bucks,,I'd sell it to a collector of fire fighting cars and trucks,,,you'd surely get a few grand for it,,

actually kinda suprised it *wasn't* diesel swapped already, but if you can find a good carb for it, leave the original gas engine in, 'cause it's perfectly fine. but whatever you do with it, make sure it gets "cars" eyes.
