"When you mix real engineering with your heart I think then you have the right recipe" - This is why Inès is the ultimate representation of top-notch engineering: It is not about the measurements alone, or the heart alone, it's the "guided heart" that makes a true engineer - it is about achieving the final result.
It's about understanding the structure of reality which clearly this man has not achieved, at least not yet.

A lot of times when I listen to engineers talk, my eyes glaze over and what they're saying doesn't really sink in. Ines does a nice job of explaining things in an understandable fashion. She would have probably been a great teacher if she weren't a great engineer!

I think you've done it!! That was a great interview, from Steve the Audiophiliac!! I feel like with all the audio luminaries that you interview you could sponsor a a speaker building challenge. Take Andrew Jones and Nelson Pass vs. Sandy Gross and Paul McGowan, give them a budget, and have them build the best product they can. Have a panel of judges consisting of Steve Guttenberg or a Musician he knows;Zero Fidelity; and Gene from Audioholics. I think it would be pretty interesting
I have met Ines on more than one occasion (I am the designer for Pietra Audio) and I must say I hold her in the highest possible regard. Indeed, understanding why Voxativ speakers (specifically the Ampeggio Due) sound so wonderful has been an interesting technical challenge for me!

If you continue to research you will find more than just Voxative and Lowther using field coil drivers. Voxative is the only I’ve found to build “new”

Voxativ is a special company and I plan one day to pair my Firstwatt SIT-3 with Voxativ drivers or speakers, let’s see what the future brings:)
Has anybody used pumice as driver materials it's two-thirds the weight of paper should be a good material.

There is no easy way to bond pumice stone into a thin membrane that maintains its rigidity without deforming, as well as having good damping properties.
The latest high-tech speaker cone material that is thin, lightweight, rigid, and also has excellent damping properties is Graphene.
It currently also needs a specialized binding agent to form it into usable sheets, but it still has better properties than Beryllium, and is not toxic like Beryllium dust.
Look into the soon-to-be-released *ORA Sound Graphene-Q* headphones. Ora Sound's ultimate goals are to be an OEM speaker and/or speaker cone & diaphragm supplier using their unique and patented Graphene-Q technology.
The Graphene-Q headphones were chosen as ORA Sound's first project because headphones are an extremely popular seqment of the high-end audio marketplace right now, and this helped to quickly gain crowd-funding for the continued R&D of the proprietary manufacturing processes needed to produce the cones relatively quickly in large quantities.
They knew that once they perfected the manufacturing process for the headphone drivers, that they could scale it up or down in order to make just about any size diaphragm or cone size that is currently used..
So the Graphene-Q headphones are a stepping stone so-to-speak that will allow them to manufacture and supply other speaker cones and/or complete drivers to a vast array of OEMs...where the big money lies.
Who knows, ORA Sound may also produce their own audiophile speaker line as well. Their cone technology is truly superior to current materials used for loudspeaker cones, and much cheaper once produced in mass quantities compared to other exotic and/or rare materials.

She makes a super important point that the snake oil screamers and measurement only placebo crowd don't understand. 'Listening' as part of development is not a process of thinking about what your hearing as it is a process of your body feeling and reacting and then understanding what you're feeling and why. The owner/designer of Genesis told me the same thing, as have others.

Most European children learn 2 languages in their school studies-I am American but lived in Germany twice as a child. I think a lot of their words sound similar to English. Many Americans have a bad attitude to learning another language unfortunately.

Two awesome interviews in a row! You’re on fire Steve. I see a pair of Voxativ speakers in my future for sure!
While I agree with Inès that nowadays neodymium makes more sense than alnico for driver applications, my 10+ years of study with the late musical instrument design legend Bill Lawrence taught me that the supposed energy product degradation of alnico magnets over time is utterly trivial -- a low single-digit percentage over multiple decades -- and not a significant engineering concern. This is borne out by the fact that the big JBL drivers of the 1950s and 1960s still perform like new as long as their voice coils and cones are factory-equivalent and in good condition -- I've never encountered a single "D" series woofer or MI speaker that required having its magnet assembly recharged.
I don't own any JBL, but I have other decades old Alnico drivers that not only still sound great. But IMO better then most new speakers. Alnico really does sound great to my ears. But I would love to hear the same drivers made with different magnets to really see what the difference is like.
Yes these vintage drivers sound different, and maybe not as precise. But emotionally they win out, and that's what it's all about for me. Besides, they can be redone, and brought back to factory specs fairly cheaply. At least as far as the magnet goes anyway.
There's a company in Canada that's run by a regular on The DIYAudio.com forums. They'll take any of these nice vintage drivers, of any type, and make sure they're up to snuff. Including remagnetizing, and improving them with a modern coating they use. Colors and designs can be added too, if you like. They also have many vintage and new drivers in stock already, and can help with cabinets and such. They'll get you going with something very nice.
Just be aware the owner has had health problems fairly recently, and that may effect things a bit. Also redoing old drivers isn't their main thing anymore, but I'm pretty sure they'll still do it for you. Or help you somehow, like directing you to someone who will do it for you. Either way, he's a great guy who will do his best to make you happy if you're thinking of going this route. He is a Canadian after all. Lol

@@amb3cog -- I don't subscribe to the audio folklore that there's something magic about alnico in loudspeakers. What's important is that the driver designer thoroughly understand the characteristics of the magnetic material s/he's using and the impact of those characteristics on the design of the driver's motor assembly -- modern "rare earth" magnets like neodymium and samarium cobalt provide an extraordinary amount of magnetic attraction in ratio to their dimensions and mass, making them the preferred choice for modern woofer design compared to alnico and ferrite ("ceramic") magnets, but if applied correctly virtually any sort of magnet can be used to excellent effect if the designer knows what s/he's doing.

I copied the sound of my reference speakers with my home built speakers. But no impact. So I added my own artistic stuff to the sound and presto! They worked nicely then. Seems like she is on the same level.

This Title is not correct! HOLGER Adler was the Mercedes Benz engineer. He changed his gender to be Ines Adler in 2019.
A truly not so easy decision for a 6ft2" Tall and strong guy. And I mean, this may be the cause he/she waited so long to do this step. Ines lived for over 50 years as Holger...
And even as Holger, the body language of Holger was that of a Girl. A big Girl..lol, but authentic!
But, what counts here is Ines is the mastermind of Voxativ, and does an amazing job! The speakers are the kind of "I want it I want it... I must have it" stuff lol..

I'm a big fan of single driver speakers. Hearing the Voxativs on RUclips I do like to own one but they are out of my pocket money. I have an old very cheap single driver PC speaker that i did some improvements on it love it for the open sound no booming Bass just open vocal and enough treble to follow the music. It keeps me happy will never tempt to buy any speaker just headphone for a full listening experience , I think Ines Adler did a great job on Fostex original idea.
She makes amazing stuff.

The idea of a wood cone is intriguing. Lighter than paper. Dumb question: I wonder if there is a special, inherent sympathy in reproduction of wooden instruments such as clarinet or oboe or strings. Interesting to know more about nuances in differences between cone materials. Thanks to Ines Adler.
Somebody could talk amplifier design all day long and for the most part it wouldn't mean zip to me, but speaker design and materials I find fascinating and understandable at least to an extent that I learn something from the speaker designers that an amp designer would leave me smh.

Your speakers look and I am sure sound lovely. It's an incredible design and to vertically integrate the manufacture as well shows greatness. A good engineer would certainly be able to understand that human sex is essentialy a 1-bit design, being dependent on a single bit in the sequence of bits. It's an effective and simple information design. There may be variations in bit sequence due to loss of information. However, a single bit design is incorruptible, meaning that in reality it does not fail - no human is born without information needed to identify his or her sex. In very rare cases of uncertainty careful DNA analysis is enough to identify whether a subect is male of female. Even if there were some bizzare anomalies in the sequence of bits, leading to certain genetic conditions, the single bit value could never be lost (even if it could be shifted) in such stable large structures that proteins or specifcally amino acids are. This value is transcripted into all cells that human body consists of, for the period of entire lifetime (of living cells).
Again, what is it to you what I think? Are you the one that tells people what they should say and do? Stick to your own rules, hypocrite.

As a Magnepan owner and fan I can confidently disagree. Maggies are good values at their respective price points but when it comes to speakers of 2X the price and higher, the only aspect in which they really excel is the ability to "disappear" as sources of sound. They do that as well as any, however, a speaker at 2X the price, say $4K (vs $2K Maggie 1.7s) will tend to produce greater resolution and imaging specificity. And of course will require less fuss in setup.
I only wish Maggies were the unparalleled performers that some owners want to believe they are, would've saved me a lot of dough.
This is like saying Range Rover is better and cheaper than a Ferrari. If you're taking a family of four on vacation that's true, but if you're driving down the autobahn at 180 MPH, probably not. Just as with cars, there are no absolutes in audio.
Where are all the "whiner" fans who rely on measurements to listen to music?
I think measurements are just fine. The problem is when you use them incorrectly, like trying to assess the taste of an apple by measuring it's diameter and weight... :)
@@miguelbarrio the good news is that I don't need a single measurement to listen to music and judge how good it sounds. I didn't have to grow the apple to critique it. The real test is how good I am at apple judging. Where I used to work the flavor creators (aka "chemists lol) made 4x what I did. They decided what an apple "should" taste like, and mixed a batch of chemicals to make that happen. I had the college degree, they were artists.
@@JohnDoe-np3zk Understood. But consider Inès's point on the Lowther speaker: She explained that the high pitch issue they had could be fixed by changing the geometry of the cone. She determined this by measuring the peak, possibly doing some math to determine the cone or suspension changes required, and then listening to the result and possibly adjusting the shape by listening. It all contributes in its own way to the final result.

Having trained at Mercedes is no gold stamp. Once thought necessity I took my 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 (when they really were great cars) to a factory trained Mercedes engineer to have the aftermarket air conditioner removed. He basically ruined that beautiful car functionally until it was repaired by a bush mechanic.
I agree. Your one bad experience, decades ago, with some random mechanic who claimed to be a Mercedes Engineer has been a stain on Mercedes Benz engineers since. They'll never live that one down.
I'm still amazed to this day that people still actually buy Mercedes made vehicles (all over the world, and by the millions too) after hearing of your one God Awful experience with that supposed Mercedes engineer, that one time, Decades Ago! 🙄🤦♂️
